By Norman Solomon his is a grim story about the care and feeding of a Blue Dog. Right now, Southern California congresswoman Jane Harman is facing a serious primary challenge from a genuine progressive. Harman is a member of the center-right caucus of House Democrats known as the Blue Dog Coalition. She has chosen not to join the Progressive Caucus. In sharp contrast, her opponent, Marcy Winograd, is calling for the government "to invest in housing, education, healthcare, transportation--not to perpetuate a war economy that is draining us, robbing us of money that we desperately need." And Winograd adds: "I challenge my opponent to stop voting for this war machine." While belonging to the largest caucus on Capitol Hill (with a membership now above 80), some members of the Progressive Caucus often say that they need more colleagues who'll be willing to vote against war and in favor of a truly progressive legislative agenda. But if Progressive Caucus members want to move the House of Representatives in a progressive direction, you'd never know it when there's a real chance to replace a Blue Dog with a progressive. Harman--who once proclaimed, "I am proud to be introduced as the best Republican in the Democratic Party"--has been straining lately to present herself as progressive while she tries to fend off the Winograd challenge. With that goal, Harman has trumpeted endorsements for re-election from several well-known members of the Progressive Caucus. In particular, she has synced up her campaign spin with two of them: Henry Waxman from Los Angeles and Lynn Woolsey from the North Bay. Rep. Waxman came through with a January fundraising letter that claimed, "In Marcy Winograd's foreign policy, Israel would cease to exist." The powerful congressman went on to trash the co-founder of LA Jews for Peace as an enemy of Israel. In the same month, Rep. Woolsey, the cochair of the Progressive Caucus, startled longtime progressive admirers when she headlined the invitation to a fundraiser for Harman's campaign in her Los Angeles area district. Within days, an open letter to Woolsey-- initially signed by Progressive Democrats of America leaders Tim Carpenter, Mimi Kennedy, Donna Smith and me--gained more than 3,000 signatures from PDA activists across the country. We asked Woolsey to cancel her scheduled highprofile appearance at the Harman fundraiser. "Given your longstanding and exemplary leadership on a wide range of peace and justice issues, it would be counterproductive to aid Rep. Harman's re-election efforts," we wrote. "Her pro-war record is well known." And the letter noted: "Harman has an equally appalling record on civil liberties, having lobbied the New York Times to suppress the story about Bush's wiretaps on the eve of the 2004 election, then going on television to defend the illegal wiretaps." Our letter continued: "In addition, she voted for the bankruptcy bill, then more recently voted against mortgage relief in bankruptcy court, despite the fact that several thousand of her constituents are facing foreclosure. On the healthcare front, she recently voted against fast-tracking affordable generic medications for patients with breast cancer, brain tumors, Parkinson's and rare diseases." When Woolsey went ahead with the Harman fundraiser, what her appearance gave to Harman's campaign most of all was the imprimatur of a political embrace from a longtime peace advocate who co-chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Unfortunately, the care and feeding of a Blue Dog tends to be habitual. In mid-April--just before the opening of the state Democratic Party convention that would decide whether to endorse Congresswoman Harman for re-election--the delegates received robo-calls from a heavyweight member of Congress, who declared: "I'm Henry Waxman, and my congressional district is right next to that of Jane Harman, who I'm proud to support for re-election." A couple of days later, I was one of more than a thousand delegates to enter the convention hall and find a four-page glossy flyer that had been placed on every chair. Most of the first page was a picture of Harman and Woolsey, standing together in front of the Capitol. The photo caption was a quote from Woolsey praising and endorsing Harman. The second page was devoted to a letter from Woolsey further extolling her. When delegates voted later that morning, Harman won endorsement, 599�417. It's one thing to support a Blue Dog Democrat in a general election against a Republican. It's quite another thing for members of the Progressive Caucus to defend a Blue Dog Democrat against a primary challenge from a genuine progressive Democrat. I was honestly rather shocked that you ran such an unintelligent expos� in your otherwise respectable publication. I have watched mainstream media jump on the bandwagon of bashing medical cannabis with uninformed accusations, but I tend to expect more out of the Bohemian and North Bay culture in general. Your reporter lavished more words on the color of her doctor's hair and turtleneck than any insightful encounter with medical cannabis, and seems to believe that she can assert a person's health status based on whether or not they appear unwell. Although I appear to be a strappingly healthy twenty-something, I have been battling HIV for almost a decade. I have run my course through three regimens of highly toxic anti-retroviral treatments, each with its own unique blend of debilitating side effects. Aside from the physical battle, I have also struggled with the depression and anxiety that comes from being diagnosed with a terminal illness. The only way I have been able to keep myself alive and sane through this experience is by using medical cannabis and visiting the gym five times a week. I have been prescribed Marinol, a drug that turned out to be as nauseating as the symptoms it promised to alleviate. Nothing has come close to offering the benefits with so little side effects as the medicinal edibles made from the whole cannabis plant with its full spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenoids and phenols. This article served to do nothing more than threaten the safety of thousands of perfectly legitimate patients like myself. By releasing this rash of ignorance into the community, I now have to fight HIV alongside the darkening judgment of public opinion. Next time you intend to publish content on a medical topic under the guise of informing your readers, I suggest you prompt your writer to actually gather information. I could have gleaned as much real knowledge about medical cannabis from an MTV spring break dance-a-thon. My experience of visiting dispensaries has, for the most part, been highly informative, and I would not have been able to use this medicine as effectively for my needs were it not for the invaluable guidance I received from the staff at my local dispensary. When I first sat down to read this article, I was interested to learn what kind of "Green Education" you were offering, but in the end was only disappointed to find another mis-education to toss in the unending pile of journalistic crap the writer must have been taking her cues from. We recently had the fortune to witness a true act of compassion at the grassroots level. Jesse Lustig, a young woman wanting to give back to her community, put together an incredible event to raise funds for HIV and hepatitis prevention ("Safe & Clean," March 24). Oil isn't the only precious resource we're about to run out of By Ronald Bailey eak oil has been a global preoccupation since the 1970s, and the warnings get louder with each passing year. But maybe we're looking for solutions in the wrong places. Economists Lucas Bretschger and Sjak Smulders argue that the decisive question isn't to focus directly on preserving the resources we already have. Instead, they ask, "Is it realistic to predict that knowledge accumulation is so powerful as to outweigh the physical limits of physical capital services and the limited substitution possibilities for natural resources?" In other words, can increasing scientific knowledge and technological innovation overcome any limitations to economic growth posed by the depletion of nonrenewable resources? Let's test the idea of imminent resource peaks and their consequences for economic growth on three other nonrenewable resources: lithium, neodymium and phosphorus. Lithium is the element at the heart of the electric-car revolution that many green energy enthusiasts are trying to foment. For example, the Chevy Volt, scheduled to be at dealers this fall, will be energized by 400 pounds of lithium ion batteries, plus a gasoline engine to produce electricity to extend the car's range of travel once the batteries are drained. In 2007, William Tahil, an analyst with the France-based consultancy Meridian International Research, issued a report which alarmingly concluded that there is "insufficient economically recoverable lithium available in the earth's crust to sustain electric vehicle manufacture in the volumes required." Tahil added, "Depletion rates would exceed current oil depletion rates and switch dependency from one diminishing resource to another." Not everyone agrees with Tahil's peak lithium prognostications. Geologist R. Keith Evans, who has long been involved in the lithium industry, issued a rebuttal arguing that lithium resources are much higher than estimated by Tahil. Evans also asserts that as prices rise, other sources of lithium will become economical. And lithium prices have indeed been increasing. But for the sake of argument, let's assume we are "running out" of lithium? Then what? Even Tahil's original report argued that there were alternative battery technologies in the works using far more common substances that could substitute for lithium. Among them was Marinraised Jake Donham's incarnation, which received a "cease and desist" notice from Tyco Toys Inc., then makers of the octo-oracle. "The purpose of this letter is to advise you that the use of the trademark Magic 8 Ball and of the game marketed by Tyco under `Magic 8 Ball,' whether online or by any other means constitutes willful infringement of our trademark, copyright, tradedress and other intellectual property rights," read the letter. Donham, a computer science grad from Yale who created the application as a lark to demonstrate common gateway interface scripts, was not impressed. Instead of kowtowing to a company that printed vagaries on icosahedrons suspended in purple water, the programmer, in an act of sublime simplicity, rotated the ball 90 degrees and rechristened it the "Magic Infinity Ball." For kicks, he added a link to Tyco's legalese. Soon, thousands of Magic Infinity Balls littered the Internet. A decade later, those who want to prognosticate about the future can now use their iPhones--yes, there's an app for that-- though none are officially licensed Magic 8 Ball apps. There's the Fortune Ball, the Magic Banana and even a Magic Toilet, which one flushes for one's fortune. (Apparently, there's a crap for that.) None of these knock-offs, however, could predict that Hollywood would start raiding the toy chest to slake its voracious thirst for the "high concept." Thus, coming soon to a theater near you, Magic 8 Ball--the movie. Remember when the toys would follow the release of a successful film? At worst, marketing dollars were leveraged across channels with toys and sundry other choking hazards licensed to the purveyors of Happy Meals? These days, toys are more apt to precede their movies, arriving onscreen as vetted properties with existing market awareness, ready-made for adaptation. Hasbro, the multinational toy and board game company, raised eyebrows, and its stock price, with the roll out of several toy-themed film franchises in recent years. Among them were the profitable Transformers flicks and the recent G.I. Joe origin myth. It stands to reason then that Mattel, which acquired Tyco in the late '90s (after dropping a bid to acquire its "perennial rival" Hasbro, according to the New York Times), would also stake its claim in the sandbox. As the producer of the beloved Barbie and Matchbox lines, Mattel's gambit would seem a no-brainer. But the Magic 8 Ball? No one saw it coming. Thank Hasbro for setting the bar so low. After having shot its wad with its A-list properties, it reached deep into the collective closet of American youth to bring Candy Land, Battle Ship and (gulp) a Ridley Scott� directed Monopoly to the silver screen. "Well, Stretch Armstrong will probably be our first movie out," Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner told media and tech blog Collider.com last year. Since then, principal cast has been announced with teenwolf Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame playing the fantastic elastic dude for a Universal Pictures release in 2012. Meanwhile, Paramount, who partnered on Hasbro's aforementioned G.I. Joe and Transformers and perhaps felt a tad jilted, doubled back and joined Mattel on the Magic 8 Ball movie. Meanwhile, Shady Acres, the company that brought you middle school marvels Ace Ventura and Bruce Almighty (and their respective sequels and spin-offs), has had its own "Magic 8 Ball" film listed in development since September of last year. Is this the same film? Or will they have to turn it on its side and produce the Magic Infinity Ball film instead? In which case, has anyone called Jake Donham? Donham says no, so it seems the ball is in Mattel's court. Fortunately, a film about an oversized fortune-telling billiard ball couldn't be any worse than Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space, in which a foreseer opined, "We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives." Neodymium is a rare earth metal used extensively to produce permanent magnets found in everything from computer magnetic disks and cell phones to wind turbines and cars. Neodymium magnets were invented in the 1980s to overcome the global cobalt supply shock that occurred as the result of internal warfare in Zaire. Because China can more cheaply produce neodymium than any other country in the world, that country is now the source of 95 percent of the world's neodymium. Recently, however, China's government warned that it would begin restricting exports of neodymium (and other rare earth metals) in order to ensure supplies for its own manufacturers. In March, Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo, introduced his Rare Earths Supply-Chain Technology and Resource Transformation (RESTART) Act of 2010. The RESTART Act would offer federal loan guarantees to mining and refining companies to recreate in five years a rare earth minerals independence, if you will. On the other hand, if neodymium supplies really are a problem, perhaps there is a technical fix. The privately held Chorus Motors has invented and developed an improved AC induction motor that completely eliminates the permanent neodymium magnets to supply the energy needed to accelerate hybrid or electric vehicles. If this technology is widely adopted, it would free up neodymium supplies for other uses and also tend to lower the metal's price In the 1840s, scientists discovered that plants need the element phosphorus to grow. The phosphorus fertilizer industry grew rapidly, initially by exploiting vast deposits of seabird guano left on oceanic islands. Today, phosphate rocks are mined to produce the fertilizer. The Global Phosphorus Research Initiative (GPRI) notes that modern agriculture is dependent on continual inputs of phosphorus fertilizer and that known reserves could be depleted within the next 50 to 100 years. However, unlike petroleum or natural gas, phosphorus, as an element, is not destroyed when it's used and so could be recovered and recycled. The folks at the GPRI point out that the phosphorus in just one person's urine would be close to the amount needed to fertilize the food supply for one person. So why not recycle urine? In fact, NoMix toilets have been invented which allow for the collection of urine separate from solid wastes, allowing phosphorus and nitrogen to be recovered and used as fertilizer. In addition, crop biotechnologists are exploring ways to produce plants that dramatically increase the efficiency with which they use phosphorus, which would reduce the amount fertilizer needed to grow a given amount of food. Stanford University economist Paul Romer has observed that "every generation has perceived the limits to growth that finite resources and undesirable side effects would pose if no new recipes or ideas were discovered. And every generation has underestimated the potential for finding new recipes and ideas." The meeting rooms were packed, spirits were high, and cheerful volunteers streamed out of the kitchen with arms full of food that they placed on rows of tables, an elaborate luncheon of local, organic food--for hundreds. But fabulous feasts here are de rigueur. Napa loves good food. Outsiders visiting the valley to indulge hedonistic whims look into this wine-saturated economy and see that Napa is all about serving this bottle with that meal at such levels of artistry and expertise that it's rare to have a poor dining experience. For one class of eater that's true-- Napa's got the food thing covered. But it's not true for the 38 percent of lowincome locals who can't always get a meal on the table. According to a study by Joanna Winter, "Comprehensive Planning for the Napa County Food System: A Preliminary Study of Problems and Possibilities," Napa ranks second to last of all California counties in the area of food security--the ability to "put food on the table at every meal." And sadly, food in Napa can be an ambivalent friend to the 8.3 percent of locals afflicted with diet-related chronic disease; for them, the Michelin Guide is irrelevant and the food-delivery systems in the county are substandard. But change is coming to Napa. And the local leaders and food-industry stakeholders pushing for such change have been about their work since well before the all-day Food Forum on April 28. The trouble was that they were, for the most part, working in slightly disconnected fashion. "I looked around for a long time for someone to organize all these good efforts around the county," said Dave Whitmer, Napa County agricultural commissioner. "And I finally thought to ask myself, `Why shouldn't it be the agricultural commissioner's office?' So I provided leadership and we got a core group of committed people to do a visioning exercise." The outcome was the Food Forum, an opportunity for a community discussion of the problems and possible solutions to inequities linked to income and race. Participation was beyond expectation. When I asked one of the organizers for a head count, I only got an estimate. "We don't have the numbers yet," Karen Schuppert explained. "But it's roughly 250 people, and we were expecting about 175 at the very most." Schuppert, a nutritionist and natural chef, was formerly the organizer of the St. Helena farmers market. "There's been discussion here today," Schuppert said, "about bringing healthy food into the classrooms and hospitals, where there are the most vulnerable populations." According to Schuppert, whose husband is in the winegrowing business, there is some wineindustry support for diversifying agriculture in the Valley. Parts of wine properties not planted in grapes might go to food crops without any adverse impacts on Napa's major industry. In an executive summary of her report, Winter claims that "less than 2 percent of [Napa] agriculture is used for food production." One industry insider told the Bohemian that it might work to go back to the cooperative "model of the 1970s" and conduct a survey of agricultural lands to see which landowners would be willing to allow sharecropping. Much of the land near riparian areas in Napa is rich with alluvial soil deposits but also infected with Pierce's disease, so vines don't flourish there. To remove vineyards from riparian acreage, replacing vines with vegetables, might be a better use of the best soil, since vines produce better fruit under harsher conditions anyway. These and other ideas tossed around at the forum represent a challenge to present thinking and a movement toward change, including a key to food-systems improvement: community building. To approach greater equity and food security, Napa needs more people networking to share information and get the food where it's needed and when. "This is about giving people hope," Whitmer said. "If we all get together, there is nothing we can't do." Napa ranks second to last of all California counties in the area of food security. The rejected meat was returned to the States where it was sold and consumed, because the United States has no regulatory threshold for copper in meat. Incidents like this are why the food safety arm of USDA, known as the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), is under scrutiny. While the public has gotten used to microbes like E. coli and salmonella threatening the nation's meat supply, and while safety agencies make food-borne illness a high-profile priority, contamination of meat by heavy metals, veterinary drugs and pesticides has been slipping through the bureaucratic cracks. Microbial contaminants can be killed by cooking, but chemical residues aren't destroyed by heat. In fact, some of these residues break down into more dangerous substances when heated, according to the "FSIS National Residue Program for Cattle," a recent report by the USDA's Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The routes by which veterinary drugs enter the human food chain trace a disturbing portrait of how large dairy farms operate. Sick dairy cows are given medications to help them recover, but if it appears an animal will die, it's often sold to a slaughterhouse as quickly as possible, in time to kill it before it dies. That way "[the dairy farmer] can recoup some of his investment in the animal," according to the report. In such cases, medications may be consumed along with the meat. Such drugs include ivermectin (which can act as a neurotoxin in humans), flunixin (which can damage kidneys) and penicillin (which can cause life-threatening allergic reactions in some people). The meat from sick dairy cattle is low-grade, and is usually turned into burger and sold to the sorts of buyers who stretch their dollars furthest, like fast food chains and school lunch programs. But veterinary drugs are also finding their way into an upper echelon of meat: veal. The milk produced by medicated dairy cows is barred from sale to human consumers. Unfortunately, no law prevents this "waste milk" from being fed to veal calves, the meat of which sometimes tests positive for these drugs. As with meat from sick dairy cows that tests positive for antibiotics, no measures are taken to recall such veal or penalize the slaughterhouses that produce it. One slaughterhouse, according to the report, amassed 211 violations in 2008 and was still considered by the FSIS as a place where contamination "is not reasonably likely to occur." Such failings can be traced to a 1984 memorandum of understanding among the FDA, FSIS and the Environmental Protection Agency. These three agencies agreed to appoint senior executives to oversee a group called the Surveillance Advisory Team (SAT). The SAT was supposed to manage interagency THE BOHEMIAN 05.05.10-05.11.10 17 collaboration aimed at preventing the entry of chemical residues into the food supply. But according to the recent report, "highlevel officials from the agencies involved do not attend [the annual SAT] meetings." Contamination of meat by heavy metals, veterinary drugs and pesticides has been slipping through the bureaucratic cracks. In addition to veterinary drugs and heavy metals, agricultural pesticides also find their way into the meat supply, often through contaminated food and water. While the SAT agencies jointly determine which pesticides should be tested for, it's the FSIS that actually conducts the tests. In recent years, the FSIS has tested for only one of the 23 pesticide classes it is charged with testing for: chlorinated hydrocarbons / chlorinated organophosphates. The FSIS places blame on its limited budget and a lack of guidance regarding the minimum levels the agency is supposed to enforce. The OIG report calls the oversight unacceptable, saying "the SAT needs to seek executive-level involvement from all three agencies to resolve differences and, if necessary, to determine the best method for obtaining the needed testing resources to ensure that the highest priority substances are tested." After raking the muck, the report makes recommendations on how the interagency collaborations behind the SAT could be improved. The report also mentions that the FSIS has agreed to many of its recommendations, such as increasing testing at plants that slaughter veal and dairy cows-- where 90 percent of the residue violations have been detected. While the OIG appears to be making a sincere effort to improve the framework that's supposed to protect our food, it could also be argued that these efforts amount to enabling an industry that remains rotten at its core. Rushing sick cattle to slaughter before they die or feeding tainted "waste milk" to veal calves are practices that would be better eliminated than improved, but in fairness, that isn't within the mandate of the OIG to decide. So while improvements appear to be in the works for the production practices behind mystery meat and mystery milk, the system shows little sign of becoming inherently less disgusting. In an era when wine marketers are in a frenzy for face time on the social network, Marietta skips it. When an enthusiastic fan begged sales manager Sam Bilbro to give him the link to their Facebook page, Bilbro replied that there is none. Just tell your friends. During big weekend events, in fact, they block the driveway with a flatbed truck to deter the tipsy throngs. And there is no tasting room. Indeed, on the Marietta estate, a collection of modest buildings and 40 acres of vineyard winding back into an Alexander Valley canyon, there's no twittering--only the oinking of a few charismatic little orphaned piglets adopted by winery staff. Marietta's flagship blend, Zinfandel-Old Vine Red, is styled like an old-fashioned "field blend." With dark, woodsy notes leading to warm, brambleberry fruit, it's juicy yet dry, rustic in character but smooth on the palate. Non�vintage dated, the current release is Lot Number 51, and as always, it's remarkably consistent with previous lots. Chris Bilbro learned to cook by taste, the only way that his great aunt Marietta would have it. Now, with no formal training, that's how he builds his wine blends. Bilbro was eventually joined in the business by three sons--some with formal training. The 2007 Zinfandel starts shy, with hints of cedar and menthol amid warm berries, then gushes boysenberry and blueberry juice, before the soft, warm and finely astringent finish brings it in, refreshing to the last drop. With black cherry and cassis liqueur aromas, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is easy drinking yet refined, with a finish neither chalky nor grippy. The 2006 Petite Sirah is deep purple, natch, with briars and blueberry, a creamy palate and the most aggressive tannins of the bunch. Napa's breathtaking Uptown Theatre reopens for live music By Gabe Meline rom the back of the Uptown Theatre, the scene is a sight to behold. Eight men work rapidly, bolting in floor seats. Two more unload large boxes from a pallet. Even more workers run power tools beneath the stage, prime the sound booth, vacuum the orchestra floor, look over blueprints and hand-paint the old wood decorations on the walls. George Altamura stands in the middle of it all, a lone figure among the bustle of his dream coming true. "I used to come to the movies and sit right here," he reminisces, pointing out a nearby space. "'Course, I never noticed the theater or how magnificent it was, 'cause I was with a broad, you know." He f lashes a sly grin. Today, the 69-year-old Altamura does more than simply notice the Uptown Theatre's beauty. With partners Bob Vogt and Tim Herman, he's putting the final touches on bringing the theater back to its original glory through a complete restoration, a project he calls his greatest achievement. Rather than screen movies, the Uptown Theatre will reopen May 14 as a live music venue, showcasing top acts from around the world and returning to Napa its crown jewel. What's more, Altamura's hired Sheila GrovesTracey, formerly of Petaluma's Mystic Theatre, as executive director. It's been an expensive job--Altamura won't say how much--but everyone agrees it's a miracle on Third Street. It might have been a sad fate for a building with such rich history. Opened in August 1937 with the film Ever Since Eve starring Marion Davies, the 1,400-seat theater was the place to be in Napa for decades. Altamura remembers it as "the magnet of the city." But the Uptown had its lean years. First it was split into two separate auditoriums. When Altamura bought the theater from Santa Rosa theater magnate Dan Tocchini in 1998, it had been further chopped into four rooms, separated by plain sheetrock walls. The ceiling mural had been painted over. The heater didn't work anymore. The projector was unreliable. Attendance was down. It closed in 2000. Altamura announced that he'd restore the Uptown and reopen it, and was cheered as a hero. Francis Ford Coppola's name was thrown around. "Then all at once, Napa died," Altamura says. "When I saw that it wouldn't be economical, and that I wouldn't have a chance, I just quit working. People all called me names. They'd say, `He's never gonna open up, he don't care about us, he's leaving that place to look like a dive.' But they don't understand. I'm a businessman, and things have to work their own way. Timing is what it's all about in life." Timing was a lesson Altamura learned at age 16, when he drove to California with two friends from his hometown of Buffalo, N.Y. He was still in high school, fell in love with Napa and planned on staying. "But my mother said, `If you don't come home, I'll have the law bring you home. You gotta finish high school, George.'" He reluctantly returned, but directly after graduating high school, he stuck out THE BOHEMIAN 05.05.10-05.11.10 23 his thumb and hitchhiked across the entire country, alone, back to Napa. The year was 1949. "Napa was wild when I was young," Altamura says with a gleam in his eye. "There were 50 bars. Whores all over town. There were restaurants open 24 hours a day. Never closed! Harry James, Stan Kenton, Lionel Hampton all came. It was just like you'd died and gone to heaven! Oh, it was the greatest." heila Groves-Tracey handled the booking for the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma for 15 years; before that, she held sway at New George's in San Rafael. She once had both Jerry Garcia and Carlos Santana playing on stage with Los Lobos. She sued Screamin' Jay Hawkins for f laking out on a tour. She's booked everyone from Melissa Etheridge to Ben Harper to Gwar. And still, for a veteran of concert promotion, she's not lost her original impetus for getting involved. "I look at the performer onstage, taking in the energy that's coming at him or her," she says, "watching the enjoyment on that person's face. Then looking out at the audience and seeing the faces of all these people and thinking, `Wow, I was a part of creating this exchange. I got to bring these people together.' I get all choked up." Booking at the Uptown is handled by Elizabeth Rush, who has experience at William Morris and other agencies, and Groves-Tracey is more than impressed with the lineup so far. B. B. King, Merle Haggard, Boz Scaggs, Rickie Lee Jones, They Might Be Giants, Ani DiFranco, Lyle Lovett, Foreigner and Cyndi Lauper are among over two dozen acts already booked, and Groves-Tracey says, "I'm hoping that we're going to be able to pursue acts like Ween and Built to Spill, so we can start working on the younger demographic." The theater won't immediately show movies, a situation Altamura chalks up to equipment and competition. If the screen rises again, it'll show classic films like Gone with the Wind or Casablanca. For the time being, all shows are 21-and-over, but as soon as the theater puts in a kitchen, Groves-Tracey says, shows will be all-ages. The seats aren't removable, but patrons will be encouraged to stand up and dance. Some have raised concerns that the Uptown will affect attendance at the Napa Valley Opera House, another restoration success story, and Groves-Tracey is mindful of sharing the audience for live music in town. "They are half the size," she notes, "so the acts that they're going to get for the most part will be ones that might not draw enough here for it to make sense. I think there's room for everybody. I completely have respect and compassion for them." hree years ago, someone came forward with a photo of the old interior of the Uptown Theatre. The ceiling had long been painted over with coats of blue latex, the lighting fixtures were gone, and Altamura had gone so far as to advertise for old snapshots. As soon as the photo arrived, he ordered custommade lighting fixtures. "We had a company make them exactly like they were," he says. "Everything here's original." `I'm a businessman, and things have to work their own way. Timing is what it's all about in life.' --George Altamura The ceiling was a more tedious matter. Altamura figured on painting it gold, but he took down a wall and noticed what looked like part of a woman's figure--"and I said, what the hell we got here?" Upon closer inspection, the ceiling showed a slightly raised outline of a Greco-Roman mural. He called a company who'd worked on the Bellagio's ceiling in Las Vegas. "They came here, looked at it, and fell in love with it," Altamura says. "So I scaffolded this whole building, seven feet from the ceiling. A big deal, really! And they cleaned all of it and made everything exactly like it was." The theater's new capacity is now 860, mostly due to wider seats being installed. Spotlights and speakers are in place. Curtains are on their way, the stage is taking shape, and George's granddaughter Jackie, who's been instrumental in the details of the d�cor, is painting in the lobby just weeks before opening night. "It's a big risk," Altamura admits. "I know that. But you can't think that way. When I first came to Napa, I had a feeling for the town. Other people have that same feeling for this theater. Every place I go, people stop me and say, `George, what you're doing with the Uptown, I'm just so happy.' All the people that badmouthed me, now they're saying better things." One thing is sure. It will be monumental when the Uptown opens its doors for business after 10 years of speculation, cynicism, hard work and, ultimately, resurrection. "It's gorgeous," says Groves-Tracey, "and come May 14, when the band hits the stage, I tell you what. I'm going to crumple up, fall to my knees and just go, `Yeah. It finally happened.'" In Doug Wright's I Am My Own Wife, which premiered in 2003 and won the Pulitzer Prize the next year, Wright tells of meeting an eccentric German antique collector named Charlotte von Mahlsdorf--murderer, transvestite, survivor of two oppressive regimes. The story she told Wright, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, was so riveting, inspiring and illuminating, he knew it could and should be told onstage. With a feverish commitment and open-eyed wonder, Wright launched a series of interviews with von Mahlsdorf at her antique-filled house cum museum. Then things began to change as uncomfortable new information began to emerge about von Mahlsdorf 's past, some of it strongly disputing her version of the story. In the award-winning play that resulted from these interviews, one actor portrays more than 40 characters, including Wright and von Mahlsdorf. The first actor to tackle the challenge was Jefferson Mays, whose performance earned him a Tony award for best actor. Four years ago, at the Sonoma County Repertory Theater, Steven Abbott appeared in a production of Wife directed by Jennifer King. Abbott's performance is still talked about as one the great moments in North Bay theater. Last week, in a sparkling new production at Spreckels Performing Arts Center, Abbott returns with King once again directing. Clearly, some things do get better with age. Abbott, who's not performed onstage since the Rep run of Wife, has deepened as an actor, and it shows from the first moment he appears, in black dress and pearls, as von Mahlsdorf. The miracle of Abbott's performance is how quickly and completely he makes us believe he is an elderly German transvestite one minute, a gay Southern playwright the next and a cruel German bully the next. Snapping from one character to another, Abbott's ability to create a believable human being in just seconds, sometimes with only a line or two of dialogue to establish that character's attitude, is nothing short of astonishing. Director King's pacing of the show, crucial in a production of this kind, has been significantly tightened compared to the Rep production. With casual deliberateness, each scene grows progressively more tense, the pace matching the mood as the mysteries stack up and von Mahlsdorf 's stories become increasingly more detailed. As written, there are surreal touches that I still find distracting, such as the playwright's idea of using tiny miniatures to represent the furniture that von Mahlsdorf lovingly shows off to visitors. Though a little confusing (wait, is her house really full of teeny-tiny armoires or . . . oh, I get it, they're representations!), the conceit does offer some rich possibilities. The gentle way Abbott cradles each miniature shows in a flash how much love von Mahlsdorf has for each antique in her home. Though filled with big, flashy acting opportunities, Abbott is most effective in such tiny moments, tossing out little gestures or expressions that frequently seem to transcend acting, so authentic and grounded is Abbott's feat. As rich and complex as the play's central character, Abbott's performance is well worth catching. Like von Mahlsdorf herself, this is an act that surely won't be easy to forget. `I Am My Own Wife' runs Thursday�Sunday through May 16. Michael Caine remains in full burn as `Harry Brown' By Richard von Busack here's probably no such thing as a liberal, enlightened vigilante movie, but Harry Brown's harrowing surfaces and a sunset performance of dignity and smothered wrath by Michael Caine give this minor movie a deeper mood than you would expect. The film is easily synopsized as a raging-geezer drama, and it's not the first of its kind. Charles Bronson was making Death Wish sequels up into an age when he closely resembled children's TV host Captain Kangaroo. Gran Torino proved that fans still wanted to see Eastwood preserving the integrity of his lawn at an age when he ought to be paying other people to mow it. So we've seen this movie before, but rarely done this crazy. Where Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank showed the red flow of life in a dump of a British housing estate, Harry Brown's location is pure mahogany-tinged death. The weirdoes he encounters seem like actors in a prequel to A Clockwork Orange, and the visual cues resemble Gaspar Noe's Irreversible. One stage for the action is a pedestrian underpass below the road that no one seems to be able to avoid. These horror-story peoplecoops in England are called "sink estates"-- the tunnel leading out is the open plughole. Caine's Harry Brown is a cautious, ill, old Londoner with little left to lose. He has a mate, Leonard (David Bradley, your go-to actor when you need an undertaker), whom he meets at the grim local pub. Both are harassed by the thugs on the estate. Leonard is aware of Harry's past as a Royal Marine, and when things get worse, Len asks Harry if he ever killed a man during his service. The quiet way Caine phrases the reply, "You can't ask me that, Len," gives us everything Caine ever had in his prime: the decency and the steel beneath it. Maddened by the way the idle kids go at him, Len hides a bayonet under his sweater before he takes a walk. And that's the last of him. A female constable (Emily Mortimer) brings Harry the news of Len's murder. That's when Harry goes out to buy a pistol. The underground gun merchant's shack looks as if the Bobby Sands of Hunger had redecorated the walls with his own homemade pigments. The host, Stretch (Sean Harris), is a freakish stripling with wavy scars all over his torso. He tends a parksize marijuana plantation concealed behind black trash bags, and when not freebasing from the barrel of his pistol, he's taping some amateur porn. Watching Caine slowly decide what needs to be done, and conquering the fear and the disgust before he does it, makes one happy--as happy as watching Noomi Repace's Lisbeth watch the Land Rover burn in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. At such moments, a movie does the thinking for you, which is why vigilante tales always succeed. Director Daniel Barber disguises the manipulation in the film as best he can. He finds pity in the story, with Mortimer, as always, a well of sympathy. Varela came up in Cuban music around the time of the nueva trova movement in the wake of the Cuban revolution, when traditional folk forms became infused with deeper and more critical social content. Varela's songs criticize both the U.S. government and that of his home country--not the safest route to take as a resident of Cuba--though he is not immune to the lure of the love song. That's where the di Rosa Preserve comes in, offering guided, two-and-a-half hour Art and Vista Hikes through its outdoor sculpture gallery and up to the top of Milliken Peak, the highest summit in the Carneros region. Those of us a bit older don't have this luxury; we fall back on a foundation of straight drum beats and guitars and not, as the younger generation does, incessant polyrhythms, MIDI synthesizers and laptop software. So if Wolch's music, released under the name Goodriddler, seems too intricate to come naturally, think again. Or at least see him live, where he plays drums, keyboards and ukulele, and occasionally sings to backing tracks, with effortless grace. He's been doing this for several years now without a proper album, while aborting various recording projects--I once ran into him after he'd recorded vocal tracks in the creek tunnels beneath downtown Santa Rosa. This weekend, he finally releases Tickling the Tail of a Tiger, his first proper CD and one of the local music scene's most engaging releases. If more of Goodriddler's songs were major keys, Tickling the Tail would be perfect music to play in restaurants or hair salons. As it is, most of Wolch's compositions are more suited to film scores or late-night drives; in other words, during those moments good for paying close attention instead of allowing sound to fade into the background. Mix the natural chamber-pop of Sufjan Stevens and Yann Tiersen with unnatural electronic manipulators like Aphex Twin and Burial, and you've got a typical impulse in Wolch's incredible musical brain. The Threepenny Opera played annually at local theaters, and the writings of Weill's partner, Bertolt Brecht, were part of the school curriculum. But it wasn't until high school, Lemper says, that she truly understood Weill's story, and she's quick to list the qualities that she was drawn toward. "His incredibly revolutionary art with Brecht throughout the Weimar Republic," she says, on the phone from her home in the Upper West Side of Manhattan. "This new form of music, of theater. Educational theater. Very free, full of spirit and anarchic somehow. I had connection to it as a young person. It expressed a lot of my feelings and my wish to free myself from rules--and a little bit of anger about the past." The 46-year-old Lemper, who sings Weill's Seven Deadly Sins with the Santa Rosa Symphony this weekend, has become the world's foremost interpreter of Weill's music and the natural heir to Lotte Lenya, the composer's wife. Coincidentally, Lemper's first all-Weill recital came at the age of 21, in 1984, just three years after Lenya's death in New York City. Before splitting up for good, Weill and Brecht worked one final time together on the Seven Deadly Sins, which Lemper cites as one of her favorite musical works. "This piece is a beautiful impressionistic, expressionistic orchestra piece," she says. "I just love to stand there in the middle of the orchestra, next to the conductor, and fall into the music and tell the story of Anna." In the work, originally written as a ballet, the narrator tells the story of Anna I and Anna II, who can be interpreted as either two separate sisters or split personalities of the same person. The Annas set out from their home in Louisiana to find fortune in the big cities of America to send back home so that their family, represented by a four-member male chorus, can build a house on the shores of the Mississippi River. Along the way, they grapple with each of the seven deadly sins. "The singer is just the commentator," says Lemper. "It's more like a psychological consciousness that I'm basically speaking to myself. I'm giving myself advice to behave and not to listen to what the others tell me, and not to be tempted by the sharks--of course, the capitalistic sharks, in the Brecht way of looking at society. Anna I is the business woman, the cold one, the one that wants to function and exploit capitalism to its brim. Anna II is the one who always doubts everything, and wonders, `Why should I do this? I can't be with the man who has a lot of money; I need to be with the man I love.'" Lemper, who has followed her passions into roles on Broadway (Chicago), movies (Pr�t-�-Porter) and rock and roll (Roger Waters' The Wall), "definitely" associates more with the emotional, instinctive Anna II. More than a lesson on following one's heart, however, Lemper sees The Seven Deadly Sins through Weill and Brecht's eyes as a satire of fascism. Of course, it's Michael Moore and it sounded like a satire, and he commented with a lot of funny elements. And so did Brecht, in his story of the Seven Deadly Sins! There are a lot of funny, satirical elements." With this in mind, the unveiling of Thomas Balm�s' new documentary Babies, a 79-minute ode to tots around the world, comes as a bit of a cinematic surprise. Directed by the award-winning Balm�s and the brainchild of Alain Chabat, Babies follows four infants and their families from their intense arrival on this earth to their stumbling first steps. Admittedly, such a basic premise can seem as shaky as that first teetering shuffle, and even the most tender-hearted individuals may find themselves standing in the ticket line thinking: "Really? I'm paying to watch someone else's home video material?" But such skepticism is unwarranted. Babies follows the Namibian Ponijao, Bayarjargal of Mongolia, Japanese Mari and the Bay Area's very own Hattie in a delightfully philosophical fashion. The documentary is short and sweet, accompanied by a pleasing soundtrack but left without any established dialogue, Balm�s and Chabat don't force messages down the audience's throat, but rather leave one with the happy option of cooing through the feature or experiencing just a twinge of unease at the extreme differences in child-rearing practices across oceans. While some may be horrified by Ponijao's newborn playthings (consisting primarily of sharp rocks) or Bayarjargal's playpen among the farm animals, it's equally possible to grimace at the infant yoga classes in North America. Perhaps not the best date movie, Babies is oddly enjoyable, and with a Mother's Day weekend premiere, it's the perfect post-brunch celebration of our unique upbringing.
