Democracy is a participation sport n case you haven’t heard, Ohio has a second primary on Aug. 2. We’re in the middle of summer, so it’s easy to overlook. But as writer Sean Posey notes in this issue, the August primary has some key races – Ohio Statehouse, Ohio Senate and State Central Committee. Election officials in Trumbull and Mahoning counties estimate voter turnout to be around 10 to 15 percent. That means a sliver of the Mahoning Valley’s active voters will be speaking for 100 percent of its residents. Elections elevate or bury candidates aligned with your politics and values. Elections determine the quality of your life. When you stay home, you cancel, block and mute your voice. You unintentionally amplify the votes of people with whom you disagree. You also deny yourself the pleasure of canceling out their vote. That’s worthy of multiple burned up faces on social media. But Facebook isn’t voting. And Twitter doesn’t count. The polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Aug. 2. See pages 6-7 for important information, requirements and deadlines.

The campaign, done in tandem with the Healthy Community Partnership, works to build awareness of the city’s parks and greenspaces and encourages residents to be active outdoors. n YWCA Mahoning Valley – $10,000 for Y Girls STEAM Summer Camps. The annual summer program hosts two camps – one each in Youngstown and Warren – that provide middle school girls with activities focused on science, technology, engineering, art and math, to help them explore potential career fields.

he Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and its supporting organizations awarded $557,800 in grants as part of the second-quarter grant cycle. In total, the Community Foundation’s general grant program awarded $164,000 to 22 organizations in the second quarter, while the Young Philanthropist Fund – led by Mahoning Valley Young Professionals – awarded $5,000 to Potential Development School for Students with Autism. The Community Foundation’s three supporting organizations combined to award $388,800 in grants. The Western Reserve Health Foundation awarded seven grants for $253,400 to projects aimed at improving health in Mahoning County, while the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation awarded four grants for $63,400 to health-focused projects in Trumbull County. The William Swanston Charitable Fund, which focuses on community projects supporting the Valley’s kids, awarded four grants for $72,000. “We’re excited to be able to support so many impactful projects and organizations in the Valley,” says Shari Harrell, president of the Community Foundation. The Community Foundation and its supporting organizations have quarterly deadlines for grant applications. The final grant application deadline for the Community Foundation general grants, the Swanston Charitable Fund, Western Reserve Health Foundation and Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation is Oct. 1. n ACTION – $10,000 for annual operating support. ACTION is a coalition of faith leaders from across the Valley working to improve communities and eliminate poverty, racism and injustice. n Alta Care Group – $17,500 for an expansion of the organization’s Belmont Avenue offices. Alta will add 2,500 square feet to its space along Belmont, allowing for the addition of two group rooms and a large activity room. n Building Neighborhoods of Youngstown – $10,000 for annual operating support. The organization provides home repairs to low- and moderate-income residents of Youngstown. n Fairhaven Foundation – $7,500 for annual operating support. The Fairhaven Foundation works closely with the Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities to ensure the roughly

The Akron-based radio station is an FCC-recognized noncommercial education station, providing educational programming in addition to its commercial-free rock programming. n Grace AME Church Nursing Guild - $6,000 for the organization’s annual Health Fair on the Square event. A part of Grace African Methodist Episcopal Church in Warren, the Nursing Guild provides health prevention programs to the communities that are historically underserved by other health-care systems. n Habitat for Humanity Mahoning Valley – $10,000 for home rehabilitation in Youngstown’s Landsdowne neighborhood on the East Side. n Home for Good Re-Entry Resource Referral Center – $10,000 for annual operating support. Based in Youngstown, Home for Good works to ensure that people who’ve been incarcerated have the support and tools they need to re-establish their lives outside of jail and prison. n Oak Hill Collaborative – $5,000 for annual operating support. Oak Hill Collaborative provides several community resources, including a small business incubator, a public makerspace, low-cost internet and technology, and office space for several community organizations. n Ohio Living Home Health and Hospice – $3,000 for the Vivo Center, a joint project between Ohio Living and the gerontology program at Youngstown State. The partnership offers Ohio Living residents activities, while providing students with mentorship and professional development. n Opera Western Reserve – $7,000 to support the production of “La Boheme,” to be performed Nov. 11 at Stambaugh Auditorium. The performance will include participants in Opera Western Reserve’s Emerging Artists program. n Potential Development – $7,500 for the construction of an outdoor fitness space for high school students. It will include workout equip-

ment such as angled balance beams, a squat press and machines for chest and back presses. n Stambaugh Auditorium – $10,000 for the Children’s Summer Arts Camp. The weeklong program will teach students about many aspects of acting as they put together their own performance of “Little Red Riding Hood.” n BRITE Energy Innovators – $5,000 for expanding operations capacity. Funding will primarily support entrepreneurial services as over the past year, the downtown Warren incubator has seen demand for one-on-one mentorship increase more than 400 percent. n The English Center of Youngstown – $5,000 for annual operating support. From its office near Wick Park, The English Center provides free language classes to people moving to the Valley from other countries, with a focus on skills that will help them live and thrive in their communities. n The Ryan Giambattista Helms Foundation – $7,500 for art therapy programming. With this funding, the Helms Foundation will be able to hire a full-time art therapist supervisor/program coordinator, as well as three part-time certified therapists. n The Salvation Army – $5,000 for emergency social services. Such services include The Salvation Army’s food pantry, hot meals program, help paying utility bills and free clothes, diapers and household necessities. n The Youngstown Playhouse – $5,000 for its youth theater program. Started in 1959, the program has allowed kids ages 5 to 18 to put on fully staged productions free of charge. n YMCA of Youngstown – $5,000 for a partnership with Potential Development. The funding will allow students from the school to take part in the Y’s Gym and Swim Program at the Central YMCA in downtown Youngstown. n Youngstown Cityscape – $5,000 for annual operating support. Best known for its annual Streetscape project in downtown Youngstown, Cityscape also supports beautification efforts at local businesses and institutions across the city. n YSU Campus Recreation – $10,000 for the

n Boulevard Park Block Watch – $35,000 for the Clarencedale Pocket Park. This park will convert two vacant properties to a usable community space that includes a playground and a blueberry patch. n Friends of 91.3 – $5,000 for the Rock+Recovery program. A joint effort between the county health department, Youngstown City Health District and Akron Children’s Hospital, the program aims to work with families to bridge the gap between doctors’ office and the home in order to reduce emergency room visits because of asthma. n The Carter House – $25,000 for transitional and supportive housing. The nonprofit works with 40 clients, providing them with not only a place to live during recovery, but also resources and training to help them toward independent living. n The Ryan Giambattista Helms Foundation – $25,000 for art therapy programming. n Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. – $100,000 for the Glenwood Fresh Market. YNDC’s market provides year-round access to fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods, as well as cooking demonstrations, health screenings and nutrition education. n YSU Campus Recreation – $23,400 for the Mahoning Valley Outside 365 program.

hio voters just finished casting their ballots in May for the 2022 primaries. However, in an unprecedented event for the Buckeye State, voters will be asked to return to the polls for a second primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Unlike in May, where voters primarily nominated candidates for federal and statewide offices, the August primary will feature elections for the Statehouse, Ohio Senate and State Central Committee. Military and overseas absentee voting for the August primary began on June 17. Voter registration deadline is July 5. In-person early voting begins the next day and will include the Saturday, Sunday and Monday before primary Election Day. Absentee voting by mail begins July 6. Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on primary Election Day. “I think it probably is confusing,” said Kathie Gaige, chairwoman of voter services at the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown. “I don’t remember a time in my life where there have been two primary elections. There’s probably lower than average voter awareness.” The confusion over this year’s elections has been a long time in the making. In accordance with the decennial census, the Ohio Legislature and the Ohio Redistricting Committee drew several different maps as part of the legislative redistricting process. “Each of these maps was challenged before the Ohio Supreme Court, and each time the court found that the maps overly favored the Republican Party,” said Paul Sracic, chairman of Youngstown State University’s department of politics and international relations. In May, a federal court ordered the state to use the third of five previously rejected maps. The prolonged process caused the state to split up the primary season, which has advantaged incumbents and resulted in many races where candidates are running unopposed, said Thomas Sutton, professor of political science at Baldwin Wallace University. “The opponents had to keep waiting to be able to start a campaign to raise money and raise their profiles. It got to the point that for a lot of them it was too late, or

the way the lines were drawn, they weren’t eligible to run,” Sutton said. The new maps shouldn’t result in many changes for Valley voters, according to representatives from the boards of election in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. “The changes here weren’t as dramatic,” said Melissa Wasko, Mahoning County Board of Elections deputy director. Stephanie Penrose, director of the Trumbull County Board of Elections, echoed those sentiments. “What used to be the 63rd District is now the 64th, and what used to be the 64th is now the 65th. That’s probably going to be the most confusing thing.” Voters unsure of which district they reside in can visit https://findmydistrict. ohiosos.gov. Mahoning County plans on running commercials about the second primary during the last two weeks of July. The county saw an increase in turnout after running advertisements a week prior to the May primary, Wasko said. About 23 percent of eligible voters in Mahoning County cast their ballots in the May primary. Due to the number of uncontested races, Wasko estimates that turnout in August might be closer to 10 percent. Penrose said she expects turnout of around 15 percent in Trumbull County. Despite the lower expectations for turnout, Sutton emphasized the importance of the races. “The General Assembly passes the laws of the state of Ohio that get signed or not by the governor. And one of those laws was the ‘heartbeat’ bill, which bans abortions after six weeks.” He added that the new district maps, which are still deemed unconstitutional, will be used until at least next year. “At this point, these maps are only good for two years, according to the federal decision.” The election is projected cost the state at least $22 million, Sutton said. Penrose added that just the cost of hiring and training poll workers in Trumbull County amounts to approximately $100,000. On June 28, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed House Bill 377, which provides grants to counties to offset the costs of holding another primary election. This should cover Mahoning County’s expenses, according to Wasko. “We’re thankful here in Mahoning County that we’ll probably going to be able to pay for our entire election with our grant money.”

Urges expansion of Supreme Court

Bike shop finds mission in former North Side church

To the Editor: This is a scary moment. The Supreme Court just dismantled abortion rights across America. As a result, 26 states could outlaw abortion, including 13 that have passed “trigger” laws to take effect immediately after the Court overturns Roe v. Wade. This news should set off alarm bells for all Americans. Our fundamental freedoms are coming under attack by a hyper-partisan supermajority on the Court. And this could just be the beginning. But there’s a way to fight back, which is why I’m urging Congress to pass the Judiciary Act of 2021. The Judiciary Act would rebalance the Supreme Court by adding four new seats, giving us 13 justices in total. It’s just what we need to move away from extremely partisan rulings and restore the legitimacy of the Court—and it’s been done before. In fact, Congress has changed the size of the Supreme Court seven times already in our nation’s history. A recent poll showed that the majority of Americans support expanding the court again now. ycWard, a new full-service bike repair and sales shop, has taken up residence in a repurposed Youngstown church across from Wick Park. The shop is the joint effort of three friends, all successful local businessmen who are also lifelong biking enthusiasts. The Wick Park Historic District is slowly revitalizing, and CycWard is a deliberate part of this effort. Joe Parent, owner of A Parent Trucking Co., joined a group bicycle ride organized by Kelan Bilal, owner and proprietor of Excalibur Barber. Both men were looking for enjoyable exercise options and interaction with other people. “Cycling just happened to be that thing,” Bilal says. A community focused on biking and business grew from this juncture. “Kelan had a great vision for a community and things we can do to improve on Youngstown,” Parent says. “And one of the common things we really wanted was to own a bike shop.” CycWard is a full-service bike shop. Services include repairs, refurbishments, and sales of biking apparel and bicycles, both new and used. Customers can bring in old bikes for trade-ins, and financing is available for the more expensive items. It is not a brand-specific shop and carries items from across the industry. In addition to the shop, the owners are constructing a coffee bar in the church where bikers can relax after a ride or people can come in to chat. Parent bought the former Richard Brown Memorial Methodist Church in 2021 to keep the Youngstown property in local hands. “I bought the church because it was for sale,” he said. The landmark church, located at 1205 Elm St., was built between 1903 and 1905 in memory of Youngstown industrialist Richard Brown. When the idea for a bike shop surfaced, he already had the keys to the building. For professional advice, Parent and Bilal teamed up with Tim Knight, co-owner of Trail Side Bicycle Co., who has been operating bike shops in the Youngstown area for years. “Believe it or not, but Tim has been in my life for a very long time. He has sold me every piece of biking equipment that I own to this day,” Bilal says. Parent is also a fan of Knight’s business and biking acumen. He has spent considerable time across the years swinging into one of Knight’s bike shops to ask advice

he Mahoning Valley Historical Society will mark National Ice Cream Day with an open house on Sunday, July 17 at Tyler History Center in Youngstown. The event occurs from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. To celebrate the national observance, Good Humor is headed back to its Youngstown roots and will bring classic frozen treats to the party. Good Humor invented ice cream on a stick and the first ice cream truck over 100 years ago in Youngstown. “Good Humor frozen treats are the perfect way to celebrate National Ice Cream Day this year at Mahoning Valley Historical Society,” note organizers. In addition, MHVS will mark the centennial of Klondike-brand products, which originated from the Youngstownbased Isaly’s. Klondikes will also be available during the event. The day will feature hands-on fun with arts and crafts activities, ice-cream making and the chance to step into historic images through museum technology. MVHS’s next History-To-Go event, “Harry Burt’s Youngstown, A Walking Tour,” will complement the open house. The program will highlight what Youngstown was like in 1922 as Burt’s opened to the public. Visitors interested in joining the tour can sign up for tour times that start every half hour from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. during the open house. Visitors also can see the permanent exhibit in the Fok Gallery, and the new “Cultural Connections: German-Americans in the Mahoning Valley” exhibit in the Youngstown Foundation Community History Gallery. This 262- acre preserve spans diverse habitats, such as meadowlands, woodlands, wetlands, and ponds.

eginning July 1, Ohioans can legally discharge 1.4G consumer fireworks on certain days, unless the relevant political subdivision has chosen to ban their use. Ohioans are not permitted to purchase or discharge 1.3G display fireworks in Ohio. Unless limited by local laws, Ohioans can discharge consumer fireworks on the following dates and times: n July 3, 4 and 5 and the Friday, Saturday and Sunday immediately before and after July 4 (4-11 p.m.). n Labor Day weekend (4-11 p.m.) (first Monday of September and the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding that Monday). n Diwali (4-11 p.m.). n New Year’s Eve (4-11:59 p.m.).

n New Year’s Day (midnight-1 a.m.; 4-11 p.m.). n Chinese New Year (4-11 p.m.). n Cinco de Mayo (4-11 p.m.). n Memorial Day weekend (4-11 p.m.) (last Monday in May and the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding that day). n Juneteenth (4-11 p.m.) (June 19). YMCA benefit golf outing set for Aug. 5

he YMCA’s 10th Annual Golf Outing will take place on Friday, Aug. 5 at Knoll Run Golf Course, 1421 Struthers Coitsville Road, Lowellville 44436. On-site check-in begins at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The fees are $100 for individuals and $400 for a foursome. Registration includes 18 holes, cart rental, breakfast, lunch on the cart, a gift, individual and team prizes and dinner. Registration is available online, by mail and in person. 4 small fresh green or red chilies or jalapenos 4 green onions, trimmed 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 tablespoon allspice 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg 8 boneless chicken thighs

INGREDIENTS

1 can apple pie filling ¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 cup old-fashioned oats 1/3 cup brown sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 1/3 cup butter, melted

PREPARATION

In a food processor chop the chilies/ jalapenos and onions. Use gloves when handling the peppers. Remove some of the seeds to make it milder, if desired. Add all of the remaining ingredients except for the chicken. Process until mixture forms a paste. Place chicken thighs in a sealable plastic bag and add the paste.

PREPARATION

Massage the paste into the chicken and let sit refrigerated 2 hours or overnight. Bring to room temperature. Discard the paste. Grill or bake (covered in a 350 degree oven) until juices run clear.

INGREDIENTS

1 head of broccoli (washed, use head in pieces) 1 pound bacon (cooked, drained and crushed) 1 small onion (chopped and finely diced) 1 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

PREPARATION

In a large bowl place the broccoli pieces, crumbled bacon and onion and mix together.

Combine the vinegar and sugar and then mix with the mayonnaise. Add to the broccoli mixture. Chill and serve. Variations include adding raisins and/or chopped walnuts/pecans.

PREPARATION

Place apple pie filling in a shallow 1quart baking dish. In a bowl, combine flour, oats, sugar, salt and spices. Add butter; mix well. Spread topping evenly over pie filling. Bake at 375 for about 30 minutes. Serve warm or cold. Makes 6 servings.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a bundt pan. Using an electric mixer, in large bowl, cream butter. Mix after each addition:. add sugar, add flour; add eggs (one at a time); add flavor; add 7Up. Beat until smooth.

7UP Cake in a pound cake variety Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once done, take out and invert cake onto a serving platter.
