Publisher’s Notes Things are heating up at METRO. We want to thank all our loyal readers and advertisers for all the support during the last 13 years. As market and media dynamics change, we continually strive to deliver quality content in both print and digital formats. Photographer, Ryan Gautier, and our team of models, stylists, hair and makeup artists created The Summer with Style fashion feature on page 48. We had the pleasure of shooting at The Birchwood, a boutique hotel with stunning views from the roof top Canopy Bar. A special thanks to owner, Chuck Prather for the hospitality. A special shout out to Neiman Marcus, Deborah Kent’s, {a} haley Boutique, Georgette’s, The Pink Palm, Liz Murtagh Boutique, Tresca Italia, Love That!, Cerulean Blu and Haden Reid for the fashions. There are many great, local restaurants and we asked a few Bay area notables where they like to have a great starter, in Favorite Apps. See their choices and it might just give you a new idea on where to begin your next meal. It was a labor of love and three years in the making, but now Rob Bowen and Bob Glaser’s Glass House 2 is complete. Take a look at METROHome Tours’ inside view of the stunning St. Petersburg Penthouse. In METROFamily, we’ve discovered there is no better way to re-connect as a family than a cruise aboard Disney’s Dream. The school year is almost over and it’s time to find a place for the kids to be safe and entertained. Check out METRO’s Summer Camps Guide for the latest offerings. Once again we’ve teamed with the Children’s Dream Fund for METRO’s 9th Annual Summer with Style, on Thursday, May1 at Neiman Marcus, where proceeds will help make a dream come true for a child with a serious, life-threatening illness. Hope to see you there!

The Art of Gold Meet Jewelry Designer Stephanie Kantis Stephanie Kantis believes in following your dreams and says it is never too late to change your life. Kantis adds that life is not a dress rehearsal and to live life now. After graduating college from Florida International University in Miami, Kantis moved to Texas and became a successful interior designer for nearly 20 years. In need of a change, Kantis, along with her husband and two dogs, planned to spend time in Mexico. During a sculpture class, her professor suggested that she take a jewelry class and Stephanie Kantis, jewelry designer, was born about four years ago. Located in Palm Beach, the highlight of her collection is the Versital™ collection, that claims each piece can be worn 15 ways with her special S clasp, (S for Stephanie). All of Kantis’ designs are made with semi-precious stones and 24k gold overlay on bronze. Kantis says, “Bold gold is in for spring.” All her chains are made to frame the face and pendants can be added or changed, to go from a day to night look. Bracelets can be linked to necklaces to extend the length, or add color and flair. All the pieces can be mixed and matched. Kantis said, “Artistic and fashionable, arm party bangles and one ‘pop’ cocktail ring on a woman’s hand are a must.” Stephanie Kantis will be in town at Neiman Marcus on Thurs., May 1 and Fri., May 2 for a personal appearance and trunkshow. Kantis will also be a special guest at METRO’s Summer with Style Party on Thurs., May 1, 6 - 8:30 p.m. Tickets for Summer with Style are $50 each and benefit the Children’s Dream Fund. Tickets may be purchased at www.tampabaymetro.com.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MAGAZINES: JLT Trains Young Women in Foster Care to Build on Survival Skills to Develop Success Skills

“Readers enjoy reading the magazine ads. They don’t pay to avoid them as they do with other media.” Source: Nielsen 2012

After years of often abusive home lives and constant transitions in foster care, the girls who arrive at Tampa Bay’s Joshua House, often come in without basic necessities such as a change of clothes, much less the tools needed to achieve in school, or develop emotionally in a healthy way. Joshua House serves the girls’ immediate needs and safety concerns. But, after settling in, these young residents – a resilient group of survivors – are often ready to learn more. The Junior League of Tampa began a new partnership with Joshua House this year, to step in and teach these young women skills they never learned in their lives of neglect or abuse, prior to reaching the safe haven of Joshua House. “The League’s monthly events there are bringing a whole new level of information to the girls about their strengths and their talents that they had never realized,” says League president Lee Lowry. “By building on their survival skills, we are helping them learn the success skills they need to make good choices about nutrition, scholarship, and more. One of the key aspects of our JLT mission is ‘developing the potential of women,’ and we absolutely believe in carrying this out, not only through our membership but to the many girls and young women we serve in the community.”

Things Are Heating Up. Scenesters! The heat is on in Tampa Bay with the International Indian Film Academy’s Awards and Bern’s Winefest on the horizon, once again Tampa will be in the spotlight! These past few weeks have been fun ones with exciting happenings around town. We are so excited to share with you the newest Orangetheory Fitness opening, as well as Irish 31’s Paddyfest to benefit the Mike Alstott Foundation, and lastly, Lanes for Leukemia, at Splitsville, hosted by yours truly, and Bill Gieseking of Pepin Distributing, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Man/Woman of The Year campaign. Let’s check out all the good happening in Tampa Bay! When Chris Elmore and Deann Venuti were looking for a business venture, they knew that Orangetheory Fitness was a winner. With locations all over the Tampa Bay area, opening in Clearwater was the perfect spot. OTF recently opened its newest location with a blockbuster opening weekend, having over 500 members already joined, a feat only 10 other stores in the company have achieved! Many turned out for the family filled event including OTF Regional Director Troy Taylor, Sheri Carr, Jessica Jurewicz and Joe Venuti. Palm Harbor just opened a location as well, and a Brandon studio is scheduled to open in May. Paddyfest, now in its third year, saw over 7,000 guests enjoy the luck of the Irish during the 3-day event hosted at Irish 31. Despite the rainy weather on St. Patrick’s Day, crowds turned out to enjoy the great music, fun atmosphere, and delicious food to benefit the Mike Alstott Foundation. Audi Tampa featured the newest A3 at the event as well. Celebrating were Jane McKee, Jay and Bianca Mize, Allison Stokes, Melissa Maloney, and Rich Clements. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has been helping cancer patients and survivors in the Suncoast region through their Man and Woman of the Year campaign for several years. Former Man and Woman of the Year winners and LLS Board members, Bill Gieseking, and yours truly, yes me, held an event at Splitsville to benefit current candidate, Mike Barbaro. While the bowling scores might have been low, the total funds raised neared $9,000! Bowling their best included JC York, Doug Mitchell, Lori Gieseking, Sherri Yagovane, and Jeremy Yoder. The Man and Woman of the Year event is May 3rd at The Downtown Hilton. Be sure to check out our coverage of Bern’s Winefest and the International Indian Film Academy’s Awards in the next issue! Now get out there and “B” Scene!

he penthouse perched atop a towering 38-story high-rise, the tallest residential building in downtown St. Petersburg, boasts nothing less than spectacular views stretching from the nearby waterfront to the

skyline of neighboring downtown Tampa. But the view from inside was not nearly so impressive. It wasn’t a matter of wear and tear or disingenuous dÊcor that left the interior lacking, a flawed floor plan

made the three-story, 4,500-square-foot space seem cramped, closed off and chopped up. Dropped ceilings, perimeter windows partially covered, or permanently discolored, and too many walls and halls were among the

main design drawbacks. Built in 2009, the original owner of the condo occupying the Signature Condominium’s 34th, 35th and 36th floors never resided there, rented it to a couple for one year and later

decided to list it. When Rob Bowen and Bob Glaser learned the property was back on the market, they quickly purchased the nearly four-year-old three-bedroom, three-bathroom and two half-bathroom

penthouse in late 2012. Sold on the location, vantage point, view and overall square footage, they also knew what they had to do to make it a more suitable living space. In other words, everything had to go.

TBM_AM14(34-43)3_HOME_Home 4/11/14 12:09 PM Page 36

“We wanted to maximize the view, minimize the walls and make it function more as a home,” Bowen recalled. “The ceilings, in some areas, were seven feet high. Now they are as high as 12 feet and no lower than 10 feet. It feels like you float through the floors.” The total transformation began with gutting the entire space back to bare, concrete floors and exposed ceilings. Electrical wiring and plumbing had to be re-routed and reconfigured. A few of the huge, heavy floor-to-ceiling windows made to withstand hurricane winds, had been marred and had to be replaced. Eighteen months and three moves to temporary housing later, Bowen and Glaser were finally able to enjoy living in a sleekly remodeled space filled with

36

high ceilings, natural light, sound-insulated walls, unobstructed windows and unobtrusive fixtures. Bowen, owner of Rob Bowen Design Group, and Glaser, CEO of Smith & Associates Real Estate, also collaborated on updating the space to create a tecnosavvy living environment that lets them adjust music levels emitting from any – or all – of its 65 speakers, automatically raise or lower soundless, glare-inhibiting window shades and brighten, or subdue, a room’s mood by lifting or lowering the LED lighting. Don’t look for any light switches to flick. Simply tap a wall mounted touch pad or send a signal through an electronic tablet and everything is at your command. Levels and layers, contrasts and

TBM_AM14(34-43)3_HOME_Home 4/11/14 12:10 PM Page 37

contours, intricacies and innovations define the new design. Bowen orchestrated a masterful mix of shades of grey, pristine whites and bold blacks coupled with selective contrasting bursts of blue, orange and red hues. It’s sophisticated but not stuffy and contemporary but not too stark or too dark. The final configuration is comparable to putting together creatively designed puzzle pieces. Each piece is individual, but fits together perfectly and works really well when fully integrated into the big picture. Forget standard, typical, traditional fixtures and furnishings. A bathroom sink designed by a Danish artist looks more like a sculpture than a simple washstand. Don’t spot a TV in the main room? You won’t until a customized cabinet opens and the 60-inch screen silently rises into view.

Does the kitchen appear to lack a refrigerator? Look closer at the custom stainless-steel wall unit and you can discern the discreetly placed handle to the otherwise hidden appliance. Still, what truly makes this home distinctive is how it makes people feel. Literally feel, as in how visitors seem compelled to cautiously touch the sparkling stone walls, cowhide rugs, bed side tables fashioned from the skin of stingrays, hard-carved concrete floors and wall-mounted fabric that matches the material used to upholster seats in Bentley automobiles, world class luxury cars. And the ultimate, must-touch treatment in this highly tactile home? The crocodile skin used to line the walls of a second floor bathroom. “When it is your own home, you can take every single risk, Bowen noted. M

One of the pleasures of dining at Mise en Place is the regular appearance of a first course that features soft shell crabs. I grew up in Virginia and come from many generations of people who made their livelihood in the seafood industry along the Chesapeake Bay. Crabs and oysters were always part of our meals growing up. Every time I bite into a soft shell crab with friends at Mise, great childhood memories come to mind.

Living A Dream On A Disney Cruise By Ronda M. Parag

D

esigned to celebrate the golden age of ocean liners, The Disney Dream combines classic design with modern technology. From the ship’s design to abundant activities and impeccable service, a Disney cruise is one that everyone in the family, regardless of age, will enjoy. The Disney Dream sails three and four night cruises from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas, with a stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. As each family boards the ship, their name is announced. It is just one of the many

touches aboard a Disney cruise that will make any family feel special. The ship’s exterior color scheme matches the iconic Mickey Mouse with a black hull, bold red funnels and vivid yellow striping and lifeboats. Small touches, such as silhouettes of Disney characters, scrolled into the cruise line’s signature yellow filigree ornamentation that stretches from bow to stern, are subtle reminders that this is one of the most magical ships at sea. A Disney cruise is ideal for multi-generational vacations. Tampa realtor, Mary

Kelly and her husband, John, decided to take her children and grandchildren aboard the Dream for a family vacation. “The Disney cruise exceeded all expectations,” said Mary Kelly. “As a grandmother, nothing beats having your grandchildren so happy in such a beautiful, safe, exciting and educational setting. There was an unbelievable choice of great things to do. It’s the perfect place for all generations to be happy.” There are so many activities on board, that not much time is spent in the room. However, the staterooms are nicely

appointed with a queen-size bed, convertible sofa and pull-down bed, to easily accommodate a family of 4-5. Each stateroom is designed with a family-friendly bath-and-a-half, providing a sink and tub/shower in one room and sink and toilet in a separate room. Ninety percent of the rooms have a private verandah. For families or larger groups traveling together, 500 of the 1,250 rooms can be joined by connecting doors. A schedule of each day’s activities is provided in the Personal Navigator that is placed in each room, nightly. There are plenty of fun and games to keep the entire family entertained. Whether it is interactive games hosted in D Lounge, or a first-run movie in the Buena Vista Theatre, or a splash in the pool, the fun is endless. Guests of all ages can enjoy Goofy’s Sports Deck with a miniature golf course, virtual sports simulators and a basketball/volleyball court. There is even

ping pong and foosball tables that are encircled by a walking or jogging track. Disney character greetings are held throughout the day for meet and greets. “The best memories for me were meeting all the princesses one by one — Rapunzel, Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel and Tiana,” said Kelly. “I was as excited as my granddaughters, Rian (4) and Shea (11).” Nightly entertainment in the Walt Disney Theatre with original productions

with all the favorite Disney characters.” Be sure to experience AquaDuck. The AquaDuck is a water flume ride and the first water coaster onboard a cruise ship. About the length of two and a half football fields, guests get into a two-person raft and are propelled through the tunnel by gushing water and jets. It is fun for kids of all ages. Trying it at night with the strobe lights, makes for a completely different experience. Dining options aboard the ship are available 24-7, including room service.

There are two all-adult dining areas for those wishing to experience an additional culinary experience. The French-inspired Remy and the Italian-themed restaurant, Palo, offer impeccable service, delightful ambiance and delicious food for an additional fee. Each restaurant offers an impressive wine selection too. Be sure to make advanced reservations as the dining rooms do fill up fast. bring the Disney stories to life in Disney’s Believe, including Cinderella, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Belle, Rafiki and Princess Tiana. On another night, a pirate extravaganza and dance party is topped off by a brilliant display of fireworks. Tampa residents, Dr. Jay and Susan Pancholy took their twins, Aiden and Riley, on a Disney cruise last year. “The Disney cruise is a wonderful family experience with activities galore and hardly any waiting in lines,” said Susan Pancholy. “The highlight for our family was their private island, Castaway Cay, and the beach dance party

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the three main dining areas. For casual dining, Cabanas offers a delicious buffet with 16 food stations. Dinner is rotated among the three dining rooms with the servers following the family. There are two seatings around 6 and 8 pm and each family is offered their own dining table. The friendly servers provide excellent service and get to know the family. “The Disney team takes service very seriously, and it shows,” said Kelly. Snacks are available throughout the day at Flo’s Cafe serving up burgers, chicken tenders, fruit, salads and sandwich wraps.

Nursery provides interactive fun designed in fun pastel colors and a comforting space. There is even a one-way window for parents to check on their children, without disturbing them. One of the best parts of a Disney cruise is the activities for kids in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab. Designed for kids 3 - 12, Disney’s Oceaneer Club provides all the Disney fairies, monsters, adventure toys and undersea exploration with daily programming and tons of fun. Space dedicated to kids takes up almost an entire deck. The Disney counselors will provide fun, and supervised

activities at Castaway Cay too. A vacation with tweens and teens can often be challenging to schedule activities that will please everyone. Disney solves that issue with an exclusive club, Vibe, just for kids ages 14 - 17 and Edge, for tweens 11 - 14. Between music, movies and video games, teens will find something to entertain themselves in the teen-only areas. They will have the freedom to enjoy numerous activities with supervision of a Disney counselor. A swipe card provides

For adults seeking a bit of solitude, the Disney Dream has spaces for adults 18 and up that include dining, spa, private pool and hot tub, secluded sun decks and comfy cafĂŠs. Night time entertainment includes an area called The District with five distinct venues. In true Disney fashion the themed bar areas all are unique in design and experiences. While there was not much happening in Evolution, the nightclub, which opens at 10 pm, the

Added homeports in Venice, Italy and San Juan, Puerto Rico, will take travelers from sun and sand of the Caribbean to European adventures. Burgundy Whites By Kevin Pelley

N

o wine region in the world is as complex and rewarding as the Burgundy region in France. In America, burgundy is known as a dark shade of the color red. In France, Burgundy is a regional name where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown. Sometimes the notion of a white Burgundy can be confusing to newcomers and seem like an oxymoron, much like the sayings “jumbo shrimp” or “freedom fighters.” Simply put, white Burgundy is Chardonnay grown in the world’s most perfect spot suited for the grape’s production. Why is Burgundy the perfect place for Chardonnay? It all started about 200 million years ago when the region was a vast sea teeming with marine life, shellfish and crustaceans. Over the ages the fos-

78

silized remains formed many layers of calcium-rich limestone. Today, this uplifted former seabed is a limestone escarpment known as the Côte d’Or. Chardonnays grown in these fossilized remains give the wines their zesty minerality, which is the calling card of great white Burgundy. Think of the difference between regular drinking water compared to mineral water, that is how different Chardonnay is from Burgundy and why it is so desirable. Without this high acid and mineral tinged finish, Chardonnay can be flabby, weighty and fatiguing on the palate. Have you ever had an overly-oaked, buttery Chardonnay from California that lacks acidity and just seems heavy on the palate? You won’t find any of these coming from Burgundy. The Burgundy region is located in

April|May 2014 www.TampaBayMetro.com

east-central France and is comprised of five sub-regions: Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, Beaujolais and the Côte d’Or. Chablis is a satellite region some 100 miles north of the town of Beaune and famous for the cleanest and leanest style of Chardonnay on the planet with, traditionally, little-to-no new oak used in the winemaking process. Côte Chalonnaise isn’t known for producing the best wines in Burgundy, but this region is famous for value orientated reds and whites. Mâconnais is home to many wonderful and affordable white wines from villages including St. Veran and Pouilly-Fuissé. The furthest south region is Beaujolais and is home to the other red grape, Gamay, allowed to be grown in Burgundy. And finally, the most important region of Burgundy is the Côte d’Or. The Côte d’Or, or literally translated “golden slope” (a reference to the golden color of the leaves at harvest), is subdivided into the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. The Côte de Nuits is home to Burgundy’s finest red wines, while the Côte de Beaune for its best whites. In recent years, white Burgundy has been gaining popularity in America. I have seen an increase in demand for Burgundy’s leaner, crisper, more balanced style of Chardonnay as consumers have begun tiring of the richer, fuller California style. White Burgundy has become a popular by-the-glass offering in many restaurants throughout America, as sommeliers and chefs prefer their more food friendly style. Today, Tampa has become white Burgundy crazed and it seems to be the buzzing white wine of the moment after Sancerre’s recent reign. This is a great trend, but the supply may not be able to keep up with the increasing demand, especially since recent crop levels in Burgundy have been so small given the devastating hail storms in recent vintages. Wine lovers interested in trying white Burgundy must be prepared to know about the producer they are selecting. Burgundy has become known as the

This disparity among producers is attributed to Napoleonic Land Code, which was adopted during the French Revolution of 1789. This code requires that upon the death of a parent the land is divided equally among siblings. This has caused a fractured land ownership within Burgundy that only gets more subdivided each passing generation. The most famous example of this is the Grand Cru vineyard, Clos de Vougeot, which has over 80 landholders within its 125 acres. Clearly, not every producer is equal. So, here are a few wines that are recommended for those interested in sampling the world’s finest expression of Chardonnay. 2012 Joseph Drouhin ‘Vaudon’ Chablis $19.95 | Joseph Drouhin is a very reliable negociant producer that also has large land holdings in Chablis. This crisp, citrusy and lemony wine exhibits the classic mineral profile that has made Chablis famous. You won’t find a more affordable, yet well made example. 2011 Domaine Francois Legros Puligny-Montrachet $54.95 | This tiny domaine produces excellent quality and value given its prestigious region. The wine has an almost smoky, flinty, burnt matchstick quality on the nose that gives way to salty, mineral tones and finally citrus and tart tree fruit flavors. Though good now, this wine will benefit from several years in your cellar. 2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne $175.95 | This Grand Cru is as good as it gets! Powerful yet balanced, this wine is why collectors collect and connoisseurs swoon. Rich, powerful and full bodied, this wine maintains elegance with razor sharp acidity and a mélange of citrus fruits, oyster shells, baking spices and note of white flowers.
