Mom Matters

9 Secrets Every New Mom Needs to Know By Cassi Denari As a new mom there will be a lot of uncertainty. Am I doing this right? Is my baby eating too often, not often enough? Is he sleeping enough? Is she pooping enough? Should it be that color? Here are some insights nobody told me that I wish I had known as a new mommy.

Got milk?

Don’t hesitate to call the lactation consultant if you have any questions about nursing. Nursing doesn’t come naturally to every woman. Like most things in life, you fare far better with a little instruction. So don’t be afraid to ask. “When I was in the hospital I asked for advice from every nurse who came to my room. Was I doing it right? Is the baby latched on correctly?’” says Lisa Banks, mother of two. “I left the hospital with a little more confidence about nursing,”

Doctor, doctor

If you have health concerns about your baby, don’t feel uncomfortable calling the pediatrician or nurse. Trust your instincts and call. It’s better to err on the side of caution. Always call the doctor if the baby develops a rash or a high fever.

Heavy lifting

Don’t lift anything heavier than your baby for the first month. Your body has been through a lot and needs pampering. Also, as soon as the doctor gives the okay, start doing those Kegel exercises. “Women do not realize they should be contracting their pelvic-floor muscles before they pick up their children,” says Sherrie Palm, founder and CEO of Association for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Support (APOPS). “Any heavy lifting can create pelvic-floor muscle problems, particularly too soon after childbirth.”

Aaahh, spa day

Take a shower every day! You’ll feel better, have more energy and definitely smell better. You might want to appoint a few people to remind you.

Help me, help you

If someone offers help (dinner, laundry, or just to hold the baby while you shower or sleep), let him. Put the “I can do it all myself” attitude on hold for this short time and get used to asking people for help. You’ll need to do it often over the next, oh, 18 years or so.

Don’t take it personally

After you have a baby everyone you meet will offer advice. Don’t take their suggestions personally. You’re not doing anything wrong. Mothers love to dispense helpful information. Use what works for you and toss out the rest.

Oh, the drama

Your hormones are on a wild roller coaster ride right now. You will cry for seemingly no reason at all, you will laugh, you might be overwhelmed and maybe even a little blue, all within 10 minutes. This is not the time to hint and hope that your husband understands your wants and needs. Care for the Caregiver How to support parents of children with special needs. By Christa Melnyk Hines When Tracy G.’s 13-month-old daughter Kira was hospitalized with acute myeloid leukemia, she was touched by the outpouring of support she and her husband received. During those eight difficult months, the community rallied around the family. Friends and acquaintances babysat Kira in the hospital while her mom and dad worked, and many others delivered meals and even mowed the family’s lawn.

“Words cannot express the gratitude you feel when someone you barely know does so much for you,” says Tracy, who was also pregnant at the time with Kira’s sister, Allina. Although Kira, now 7, has recovered from the frightening ordeal, she still faces many daily challenges. As a child with Down syndrome and autism, learning and development takes longer and requires more patience compared to the typical child. Like many parents who have children with special needs, Glock says finding time for herself is difficult. While many of us know how to help a family member in crisis, how do we support parents who often put their own needs last as they focus on the daily challenges of caring for youngsters with special needs?

Offer to babysit

To find a trustworthy, alternate caregiver is a huge relief for parents who regularly juggle doctor’s appointments, school issues and therapy, not to mention jobs and other children. “Every parent’s needs are different, but most just love a little rest,” Tracy says.

6 MetroKids.com

Because children with special needs require more attention from their parents, healthcare providers and therapists, other youngsters in the family may feel slighted. “Children always struggle, and this is the case whether they have special needs or not,” says Nancy M., mom to two children, including Emy, 16, and Kyle, 14, who is on the autism spectrum. “There are going to be sibling jealousies.” When her children were younger, she would often schedule her son’s appointments during times when her daughter was in preschool. “In my daughter’s mind, it wasn’t fair that someone was coming to the house and playing with her brother and not her.”

Brighten a friend’s day • Buy a gift certificate for a massage or manicure • Offer to babysit or help with siblings • Help get kids to practice • Deliver a meal • Mow her lawn • Send flowers or a card • Have the house cleaned you provide more effective support,” says Heather T., mom to two children with special needs, including Beth, 14, who has Down syndrome and Marie, 11, who has high-functioning autism. Both girls also have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Suggest resources

Listen

Support groups help parents feel less alone and provide valuable resources for assistance in childcare, school issues and healthcare. “The biggest thing for me was to know that I wasn’t in this by myself — that I wasn’t the only person who had a child who didn’t sleep well; that I wasn’t the only one with a child who is now 3 and not talking,” Nancy says. To find support groups in your area, consult with the therapists and teachers your child already works with, your library, your church and online at MetroKids.com/SpecialKids, for resources in Pennsylvania, South Jersey and Delaware, or national sites such as Autismspeaks.org or the National Down Syndrome Society’s Ndss.org. Also check out Facebook and MeetUp.com for local support groups.

Educate yourself

Christa Melnyk Hines is a freelance writer.

Access to a qualified babysitter you can trust with your child with special needs can give you an opportunity to spend much-needed, one-on-one time with your other children, too. Ask the parent how she’s doing and then simply listen. Avoid platitudes or suggestions to help her fix problems. “We all just like to be heard. Everybody likes to vent,” Nancy says. “Just listen to what the issues are without judgment. That’s a huge help for everybody, but primarily when you’re dealing with something that someone else might not understand.” Get to know the child, including her disability, her personality quirks and her individual needs. And ask the parent about her specific parenting challenges. “It shows that you care and will help

Boo-Boo or Worse? A bump on the head is a rite of passage, but how can you tell when it’s something more serious? By Jennifer Lesser No matter how closely parents watch their kids, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the occasional bump on the head. Whether it’s a fall from a bike, a toddler tumble on the deck or a mishap on the playground, most kids will bang their head at some point. But as a parent, how do you know when that head injury needs nothing more than a Band-Aid, an ice pack or a kiss, and when it might require a visit to your child’s pediatrician or, more seriously, a trip to the ER? “When we’re talking about small children, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that anything more than just a small bump really warrants a call to a primary care physician,” advises Edward Fog MD, emergency medicine specialist and associate medical director for AtlantiCare Physician Group in Clementon, NJ. “However, generally speaking, a small bump on the forehead with no loss of consciousness and no other symptom is considered to be a pretty minor event and nothing to warrant serious concern.” Here are some things that might indicate it is more serious than a boo-boo.

How far was the fall?

How how far did your child fall and how hard was his head struck? “Falls greater than five feet in kids under two years old, or greater than three feet in kids over two years old, are more of a concern, as are severe car accidents or a child struck by a car while walking or on a bike, or hit with a high-impact object like a bat or baseball,” says Anne Cadau, MD, staff physician at Patient First, with locations in South Jersey and Pennsylvania.

8 MetroKids.com

Where is the bump?

Because the forehead is a more protected part of the skull, bumps and bruises on there aren’t usually cause for alarm, Fog explains, but bumps on the side or back of the head can be more of a concern. “It’s common to get swelling on the front of the head or forehead with a bump, and it’s usually no cause for alarm. However, in kids under two years old, swelling in any other part of the head should prompt an evaluation,” Cadau says.

doesn’t need anything more than a kiss on the forehead from mom or dad. “Typically a child who only cries for a minute or two and then goes right back to play and doesn’t vomit or exhibit any other symptoms, and who only has a small bump, is a child who is just fine,” Fog says.

Watch for these symptoms

How badly is it bleeding?

“Any bleeding that does not stop with pressure applied to the area for about 10 minutes should be evaluated for possible sutures or staples,” she adds.

What’s normal? What’s not?

It’s common to get a headache, nausea or dizziness immediately after a head injury, says Cadau, so one of the best ways to determine the severity of the injury is to closely monitor your child’s behavior afterward. “It’s best to have the child lay down or do a quiet activity so you can watch him,” she says. For children too young to verbalize what’s wrong, parents should look for irritability, extended periods of crying, or unusual sleepiness. “You’re really looking for any behavior that isn’t normal for him,” Fog adds. If your little one acts normally and wants to go back to play, she probably

Some symptoms could signal a more serious head injury and require medical attention. “More severe symptoms should be evaluated in an emergency department rather than urgent care or doctor’s office,” Cadau adds. “You know your child best … so if you’re concerned with how she’s acting, have her evaluated.” Cadau says to look for: • Fluid from the ears or nose • A bruise behind the ear • Vomiting more than twice or four to six hours after the accident • Severe or worsening headache • Drowsiness • Confusion • Difficulty walking, talking or seeing • Stiff neck • Seizures • Continuous crying • Weakness or numbness • Other unusual behavior. Education

3 Steps to Find a Preschool By Jan Pierce When it’s time to search for the perfect preschool for your little one, you want to be sure you’ll make the right decision. If you’re lucky enough to have friends who’ve done their research and are happy with their choice, you’re fortunate; you’ll have first-hand recommendations. If not, here is some advice. Before you start, be aware of the difference between daycare and preschool. Daycares provide custodial care, take children of all ages and offer extended hours but don’t usually offer an educational curriculum. A preschool usually has limited hours and may or may not offer before- and after-school care. In daycare, children of all ages may be grouped together, while a preschool is segregated by age groups. Be sure you start your search early. Many excellent preschools have long waiting lists.

1

Ask questions

Look for these qualities

Find a school that provides: • Proximity to your home/work. • Solid reputation and up-to-date accreditation, licenses, state approval. • Clear rules and regulations, health/illness policies, pickup and drop-off times. • Clean, well-kept facilities with adequate indoor and outdoor play areas. • Qualified, caring staff. • Stimulating curriculum and age appropriate toys. • A philosophy and climate that suits you and is right for your child’s temperament. The NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) has a database of its accredited preschools at Naeyc.org. It is updated weekly. It also lists daycares.

Here are questions to ask before you narrow your search to schools that you want to visit: • Is there room for my child? If not, is there a waiting list? • What are the fees? How and when are we billed? • How do they communicate with parents? (phone, emails, newsletters, website) • What is their staff-to-student ratio? (NAEYC recommends an adult to every four-to-nine children for ages 2–3 and one for every eight-to-10 children ages 4–5.)

10 MetroKids.com

2

• Do their staff members have credentials and training? Are their backgrounds checked? Do they know CPR? Do they continue to receive training? • What is their educational philosophy? (academic-oriented, exploration, faith-based, etc.) Some distinct philosophies include Montessori, Waldorf, or Reggio-Emilia. • What health/hygiene standards are enforced? (immunizations, sick-child rules, hand-washing, etc.) • How do they handle discipline? • Are meals and snacks provided? Do kids take naps? • What safety precautions are in place? (procedures for strangers on-campus, release policies, sign-in/out) • Can they provide a list of references? (Be sure to call them.) • Can they provide a sample of a weekly curriculum and activities? How often are activities changed?

Visit schools

3

After you gather information you’ll be able to narrow your list down to two or three to visit. Decide whether you want to do this with your child or on your own. When you visit you’ll be looking for the above qualities of a good school, but also to get a “feel” for the school. • Do you feel welcome? • Are the children busy and engaged in work or play? • Is the facility pleasing to the eye and orderly? • Do you get the sense that you’d feel comfortable leaving your child in this school’s care. • Are the children happy? Jot down your first impressions and any new information you find during the visit. If you don’t feel comfortable with the school environment, trust your instincts and look for another school. It might be preferable to find a safe daycare until you find a preschool of the highest standards. You want the perfect preschool, and your child deserves it. All the time and effort you put into your search will pay huge dividends in a happy, healthy and well-cared for child. Jan Pierce is a retired teacher and freelance writer.

Parenting

Young and Restless Educational activities for young explorers By Kimberly Blaker Does it seem like every time you turn around your home has been taken apart by your little explorer? Don’t despair. It may simply result from an extraordinary desire to learn. Who knows, your child just may be a future scientist, inventor or leader in the making. When your child needs to occupy her creative energy, have her try some of these fun, educational activities.

Put together a book of facts.

Pick a favorite topic, such as dinosaurs, insects, rock bands, sports or astronomy. Clip pictures and descriptions from magazines and internet printouts. Then trace drawings from books, and write about personal experiences with the topic.

Make up a scavenger hunt. Draw

up a list of easy-to-find items for your small children. Give older kids a greater challenge with a list of puzzles to solve in order to determine what items to find. Kids can also create their own scavenger hunt for family or friends.

Play restaurant. Have your child make up a restaurant menu with several simple dishes he can prepare. At dinnertime, he can seat the family, take orders, then prepare and serve the dishes. Recycle some fun. Start a discard

collection and teach your kids the importance of recycling and reusing disposable items. Then get their creative juices flowing. Save zippers and buttons from old clothing, plastic containers, fabric strips, packing materials, small scraps of wood, carpet and wallpaper scraps, and more. Then supply your kids with scissors, tape and glue, and let them go to work. Offer ideas to get started, then let them come up with their own creations.

Make a U.S. puzzle. Purchase several colors of clay and a United States map. Clip each state from the map, place a state clipping over the rolled-out clay and trace the shape into the clay with a toothpick. Cut out the shapes then write the name of the state with a pencil tip. Be sure to use a different color of clay for each neighboring state, and then let the shapes dry or bake according to instructions. Play Thomas Edison. Save those old kitchen appliances, computers, DVD players and other electronics. Give your child a supply of tools such as pliers, screwdrivers and safety glasses, and let him go to work. Kids love this type of exploration and learn by taking apart and examining the inner workings of electronics. Cut the electrical cord to prevent mishaps. And supervise for sharp parts or mechanisms that could pinch fingers. Create a video. Have your children make up several humorous television commercials using household items for props and by dressing for the part. After they’ve rehearsed their skits, set up a video camera and tape their production. Kimberly Blaker is a freelance writer.

Pre-show “playshops” conducted by area artists and educators, where kids can explore the performing arts from puppet making to stage makeup, are just a couple of the activities you might find. Ask about summer arts programs too. To find theaters, go to Metrokids.com/PlacestoVisit and select the Theaters category.

Hands-on science Visit one of the many hands-on science museums around the country. These science playlands are great fun for kids and adults alike. They’ll keep your kids mentally and physically active while they push buttons, wind cranks, play instruments, experiment and build. When everyone is exhausted, enjoy a family science show, the observatory, an IMAX movie or simulator rides, all commonly found in these museums. To find local science museums, go to Metrokids.com/PlacestoVisit and select the Science Museums category.

Teen Travelers At travel camps, kids explore the world, themselves By Susan Stopper When Upper Darby, PA native Julia Fournier aged out of the summer theater camp she had attended, she tried something new. She spent the summer after her sophomore year of high school in India with The Road Less Traveled (RLT), a travel program that runs trips for middle and high school students. In India, Fournier spent 28 days on community-service projects, hiking and absorbing Indian culture. She enjoyed it so much she went to Costa Rica and Panama with RLT the next summer. “I loved having an experience completely separate and removed from my day-to-day life,” says Fournier, who is now an admissions counselor for RLT. “You could reinvent yourself and there was space to explore different parts of yourself. “I learned I really enjoy hard work. We were moving bricks to build a classroom for a school. It was hard work and I was hot and physically exhausted, but it was so satisfying because it had an important purpose.”

Deckelbaum helped match Stacy’s son with a Rustic Pathways trip to Thailand, where he worked with abused elephants. The next summer he laid pipes to provide potable water to remote mountain villages in Peru. Her daughter wanted to try something similar, but not as far away. Deckelbaum suggested RLT’s Florida conservation trip, which she loved. “Summer travel options for this age group are quite broad,” says Deckelbaum. Teens can choose camps that focus on sightseeing, community service, language immersion, hiking, biking, photography, conservation, animal studies, cooking or a combination. After they identify the right fit for a child’s interests, parents should ask about the program’s rules, communication policies, safety procedures and staff training. We develop analytical thinkers with imaginative minds capable of producing life-changing ideas. Our students build capacities and skills of creativity, resourcefulness, collaboration, perseverance, integrity, and ethical understanding. How we teach this matters. Every aspect of Waldorf education is intentional and planned. Why we teach this way matters. At each stage of child development, students are challenged, capacities are built, foundations are set, and opportunities are given. When we teach things matters.

A Hundred Ways to Learn Children’s books that teach through objects in a museum, stickers, imagination and Hedy Lamarr’s inventions. By Frank Lipsius Opposites Colors ABC 123 Candlewick Press. $7.99 each. Ages 0–3 With a series of board books collectively called Early Learning at the Museum, the British Museum has found a clever way to infuse its hoard in people’s minds at home. Museum objects illustrate titles like Opposites, Colors, and numbers and letters. For big and small, it has a Japanese print of Mount Fuji on one page opposite a first-century bronze Roman mouse sculpture. It is just the kind of book to fascinate giver as much as or more than the given and justify the centralization of such treasures in London, far from where they were made and might otherwise languish barely viewed, if not destroyed. The illustrations tend to be objects more than paintings, a choice that emphasizes their three dimensionality and familiarity, despite artistic flourishes that bring out and provide an early introduction to national characteristics and a head start to art appreciation and education. Hedy Lamarr’s Double Life: Hollywood Legend and Brilliant Inventor Written by Laurie Wallmark, illustrated by Katy Wu Sterling. $16.95. Ages 5 and up Almost immediately, author Laurie Wallmark explains that Hedy Lamarr, far from being just a pretty face and competent actor, invented “the technology known as frequency-hopping spread spectrum.” So now you know, and next you find out “this is the scientific breakthrough that helps keep our cell phone messages private and defends our computers from hackers.” Not your typical picture book about an actress but of course not a typical actress, though she ended up with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame after appearing in rafts of films in the 1930s and 40s with the likes of Charles Boyer in Algiers and Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and Judy Garland. Her inventions included practical things like a tub ladder, a glow-in-the-dark dog collar and a flavor cube to turn water into soda. The frequency-hopping spread spectrum was a way to bounce signals off a torpedo. It fooled the enemy by sending multiple signals but guided the torpedo with only the ones that matched the sender’s. Hedy devised the system with her piano-composer collaborator George Autheil to mimic the way piano rolls can make several pianos play the same tune together. The book is breezily written to cover the whole of the subject’s vastly disparate career without getting bogged down in her boredom with Hollywood or details of the inventions, while explaining what inspired her and how she made her discoveries.

MARCH 2019

The Neighbors By Einat Tsarfati Abrams. $16.99. Ages 4-8 Living on the seventh floor of a walkup building might seem like an awful bore and chore to get home every day, but the young heroine of Einat Tsarfati’s colorful imaginative book takes leaps of fancy in speculating on what goes on behind the door on each floor. Taking clues like the smell of fish on the landing, the young trouper assumes a mermaid and pirate are behind the door, while a wheel indicates a circus troupe practicing inside, and mud means an old explorer with a pet tiger. The images are colorful and evocative, as though the rooms are aquaria of exotic beings filled to the beams with the thoughts of what they might be. Traipsing all the way up seven flights of steps could be demoralizing, but the only boredom is reaching her own apartment, where she really does know what goes on, except that when her loving parents put her to bed, what if they have their own secret life that she can dream about, just like the neighbors’? Peel and Discover Horses Peel and Discover Washington D.C. Peel and Discover Dinosaurs By Megan Hughes Butler. Illustrated by Chad Thomas Workman. $8.95 each. Ages 6 and up A profusion of stickers on the lefthand page and large scenes on the right-hand side to put them in is just half the fun of Peel and Discover Horses. The real interest in this innovative book is the facts revealed when the stickers are lifted. The information underneath is like a surprise that makes it all the more interesting and easy to remember. It is the kind of learning experience that comes naturally and encourages further exploration until so much information flows from the activity that the pages seem to fill themselves with the stickers. Some illustrations have questions you need to take up the sticker to see, like what teeth can tell you about the gender of a horse or where in Washington you can touch a moon rock (Air & Space Museum), while others provide interesting information and a big inducement to keep peeling up the stickers and learning at play. Frank Lipsius is a contributing writer to MetroKids. See our ongoing kids’ book coverage at MetroKids.com/books.
