International Exchange Programs

A GLOBAL MINDSET Educational strategies with origins around the world

By Ann L. Rappoport, PhD Education in the United States often attracts worldwide attention but it is also improved and enhanced by adapting international approaches to schools and learning. Here are three effective and popular strategies with origins elsewhere that are being implemented in local schools.

Outdoor Classrooms, Forest Schools

“There is no bad weather, just bad clothing,” explains Kristina Eaddy, lead teacher in the Outdoor Classroom preschool program at the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in Northwest Philadelphia. Layers of appropriate gear and plenty of snacks are how youngsters prepare for a full day’s curriculum in nature, even during a chilly winter. Forest Schools are popular in Germany and the Schuylkill Center was a founding member of the Eastern Region Association of Forest and Nature Schools in the US. Outdoor Classrooms typically combine structured time with child-driven free play. Students make berries and leaves into ink; they journal and draw outdoors, sometimes in the snow. They skate on ponds. When sticks are employed in play – which is inevitable – students learn safer ways to wield them and alternative uses for them, from picture frames to brooms. “Everything in nature is multi-purpose,” Eaddy says. “We try to say ‘yes’ as much as possible,” she continues. So when students climb trees, build forts or engage in other forms of what some adults consider “risky play,” degreed and licensed educators, who are also trained in natural education, facilitate safe practices to enable children to explore to their own limits. This helps kids build technique, competence and confidence. Nature Classrooms support social and emotional growth as well, says Schuylkill Center Director of Early Childhood Education Sandi Vincenti, because different kinds of learners thrive in this community of students. When they move to a new educational environment, the transition is smoother because they have discovered how to learn and take responsibility for their learning.

Guide to Schools

Experiencing a foreign country directly is not the same as talking about a foreign country and that’s why Greene Street Friends School’s Costa Rica Exchange Program for seventh and eighth graders is powerful, says Ryan Kimmet, associate head of the Philadelphia-based Quaker school. He believes this special connection between US students and their peers in another culture is “life changing for our kids.” Some students remain in touch with their Costa Rican friends into adulthood, he says. From PreK, Greene Street Friends students start learning Spanish but the exchange also integrates history, social studies, science and other curricular and philosophical objectives. In a period of just less than two weeks, seventh-grade students visit the homes and schools of their Costa Rican pen pals; tour bat caves, cloud forests and coffee plantations; engage in indigenous cooking and decorative arts, and provide service. During eighth grade, Costa Rican hosts visit Greene Street Friends in Philadelphia. When young people leave their home or country for the first time, they benefit from understanding diversity and resources in a new way, says Kimmet. Their eyes open and their worlds expand as they couldn’t have imagined.

Singapore Math

Teachers at the independent St. Anne’s Episcopal School in Middletown, DE are excited that a different approach to teaching math has transformed first graders from saying, “I can’t do math” to saying, “I tried this and it worked.” They now beg for additional math time, both in and outside of school. Singapore Math is credited with keeping Singapore students ranked among the best in complex problem-solving and mathematical thinking. The approach is rooted in child development, moving from the concrete, to the pictorial and the abstract with each topic, according to firstgrade teacher Tara Liguori. Instead of memorizing which formula to apply to get the right answer, Singapore Math helps students develop a deeper understanding – a number sense – so they can think about mathematical problems and explain how to work them, says another first grade teacher, Melissa Meier. Practice, not drills, helps students solidify their basic math facts; meanwhile, class members collaborate to address daily “anchor problems.” This approach rejects rote steps in favor of learning the meaning behind them, says Meier. Students learn why, not just how. The result is students who think flexibly on their feet and generate multiple ideas to solve complex problems. Ann L. Rappoport, PhD, is a contributing writer to MetroKids.

Great Study Habits for

SCHOOL SUCCESS By Suzanne Koup-Larsen Good study practices solidly ingrained into habits can help students start the school year off on the right foot. Here are tips for students of all ages — and parents, too. Katie Baker, a mom and 2nd grade teacher at Bunker Hill Elementary in Middletown, DE, recommends reaching out to your child’s teacher early in the school year to establish a relationship. “Families play a crucial role in their child’s education and I think that this partnership is imperative,” says Baker. She suggests sending an email or note to the teacher introducing yourself and offering to work with the teacher as a team. Help young students prioritize and break assignments into smaller, more manageable pieces. “Elementary students should do this with a responsible adult until they can prioritize their work on their own,” says Wendy Turner, 2017 Delaware Teacher of the Year, a teacher at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in Wilmington. Ashlynne Thomson, assistant director of college counseling at Moorestown (NJ) Friends School, believes that because assignments are often given electronically, breaking down assignments is an often-overlooked strategy. “Note when each piece is ‘due’ in a planner, which can be electronic,” she recommends. For nightly homework, elementary school teachers recommend finding a calm and organized workspace. Emily Gojman, a 4th grade teacher at Moorestown Friends, recommends keeping supplies handy. “Use pencil cases, a shower caddy or a desk organizer to keep supplies organized,” she suggests. Take breaks every 15 minutes to get the wiggles out. She recommends getting up, stretching, walking around and even dancing. Do homework in a quiet place with no distractions, recommends Dr. Laura Blankenship, dean of academic affairs at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA. “Practice and

8

Guide to Schools

study require focused attention, so shut down the social media sites and turn off the phone,” she says. Moorestown’s Lower School Librarian Deborah Alterman recommends turning on subtitles when children are watching TV. For early readers, this can help boost reading skills, such as phonics, word recognition and fluency. Older students can have fun turning on subtitles during live events to catch typos and mistakes. “Studying should involve something other than staring at words,” says Margaret Somerville, a middle school Latin teacher at Friends’ Central School in Wynnewood, PA. Simply staring at words can allow the mind to wander. Instead, she recommends saying key names and phrases aloud, typing them out, or using online tools to make maps, charts or interactive games. “All of these encourage processing information instead of staring at it,” she says. Chris Reyna, a social studies teacher at Bayard Rustin High School in West Chester, PA, recommends that students use the Positive Psychology method when reviewing for a test. Students write down new facts and skills learned, and things they are thankful for. “It builds confidence and might point out areas for further review,” says Reyna. For high school subjects heavy in math, such as chemistry and physics, teacher Kevin Orlando says they are best understood through repetition. “When reviewing for a test, redo old examples and attempt new ones. Simply glancing over previously completed problems will not uncover your uncertainties,” says the chemistry teacher from B. Reed Henderson High School in West Chester, PA. Blankenship notes that getting started studying is often the hardest part. “Try to envision exactly what you want to get done when you sit down to study,” she suggests. Then write it out as a to-do or goal list. “You’re more likely to be able to start quickly if you can visualize what you want to accomplish.” Suzanne Koup-Larsen is a contributing writer to MetroKids.

Is your child riding at risk? FOUR OUT OF FIVE CAR SEATS ARE INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. Installing a child safety seat correctly can be confusing. And as children grow, you must choose the right type of seat for their size, install it correctly and also buckle them in properly to prevent injury. It’s a lot to remember, so the Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is here to help. You can have your child safety seat inspected by a child passenger safety technician for FREE, and be sure that your child is safe and secure.

We at HFS provide effective tools for students to respond compassionately and thoughtfully to one another and the world in a non-violent manner — to be peaceful, creative problem solvers. Students seek opportunities to serve others and tend the environment in the context of community/global outreach and daily practice — to be good stewards of relationships, resources and the planet. 14

Guide to Schools

Inspired by Christ and fortified by St. Augustine’s core values of Truth, Unity, and Love, Malvern offers its students a nurturing community in which they can grow and become the best possible version of themselves. An Augustinian education not only prepares students to make their way successfully through life, but also gives them a relationship with God and close friends, Brothers, with whom they will share this journey we call life. Young men at Malvern Prep develop a personal moral character in order to live a life of humility, open-mindedness, and service. Our design-based approach to education is guided by Catholic Social Teaching which emphasizes the social nature of humanity and an ethics of the common good. We place a high value on the importance of questions — allowing wonder, curiosity, and imagination to shine through. As a result, our students are asked to create, analyze, and evaluate far more than they are asked to memorize. They are empowered to be intellectually curious so they may become lifelong learners who improve the world through innovation and creative problem solving. Malvern graduates are young men who know themselves and others, know the world, and embrace the presence of God in all of creation. Since 1842, the School’s tradition has been to prepare young men for college, for leadership and for life. Students learn today so that they may lead with integrity tomorrow.

Although we do not “teach to the test” our students achieve scores that are higher than the average for students at independent schools. • Preparation for the most selective high schools and universities in the country with an emphasis on the best fit for the student. • Service to their communities and the world. • Career success later in life. These outcomes are achieved through the school’s 8:1 student-tofaculty ratio, which gives our experienced teachers the opportunity to understand and care about your child. With an appreciation of your child’s unique capabilities, personality, passions and goals, teachers can focus on the areas that will benefit your child the most. As a Friends School, students, faculty and staff thrive in an environment that emphasizes the importance of respect for the individual, integrity, equality, social justice, simplicity, peace, community, collaboration, and environmental stewardship. We believe this allows students to become well-rounded individuals who “do well and do good” throughout their lives. The school embraces students from all religious backgrounds, races, and nationalities, and believes exposure to a wide variety of ideas and perspectives is critically important to all students’ development.

TQS equips students with the skills needed to succeed in secondary school, develop fulfilling personal relationships and lead meaningful lives. The underlying basis for all things at TQS is the fundamental Quaker belief that there is the Light of God within every person, and that we are meant to share that Light through our efforts, our gifts, and our actions.

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Nurturing each student’s heart and mind to lead and to serve with love, creative hope and fidelity in the IHM tradition! Love, learn & live greater!

St. Aloysius Academy is a private, Catholic, K-8 school for boys with a co-ed Montessori preschool situated on a 42-acre campus in Bryn Mawr. The Academy, established in 1895 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, prides itself on providing its students with an exceptional education while building their confidence, selfesteem and empathy for others. We are forward thinking with a rocksolid foundation of tradition. The Academy’s Mission Statement declares that “we are fostering in each student qualities of leadership and service.” Our intentional leadership and service focus is bolstered by the promotion of a growth mindset – “I can’t do this yet, but with effort, I can.” This is another piece that adds to the students’ confidence which, in turn, leads to our students living the Magis. This is a Jesuit concept for being a man for others, going above and beyond. A student who is confident and empathetic, who has that “yet” attitude that fosters possibility rather than limitation, will become a contributing global citizen. Our technology-infused curriculum challenges our students and inspires critical thinking. Our extensive, award-winning fine arts and athletic programs allow each student’s talents to blossom. We say a pledge together every morning – “I promise to make every effort to see the good in my fellow students and to recognize and enjoy their differences and talents.” Our nurturing faculty and staff welcome every boy and his family into our community. Small class size lends itself to individualized attention and the joy of discovery.

Points of Pride: • Our students live the “Magis,” a Jesuit term meaning being a man for others, doing “the more.” The boys are leaders in service of others. • We do STEM but add an “R” for Religion and an “A” for the Art of Design which gives us STREAM which the students love to navigate. • St. Aloysius Academy is the only private, Catholic, all-boy Academy in the five-county Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The Waldorf School of Philadelphia is one of 160 Waldorf schools in the country that focuses on the development of the whole child and learning through hands-on activity. Waldorf teachers strive to help each child realize their potential at each stage of development through an interdisciplinary approach to learning that emphasizes connections – between the student and the world, between arts and academics, between physical and cognitive development, between history and current events. No other form of education provides an academic experience this enriching, authentic, and joyful. The Waldorf School of Philadelphia’s early childhood program offers a warm, safe, nurturing environment for young children to thrive. Children learn how to prepare fruit for sharing, roll dough for baking fresh bread, chop vegetables for soup, and learn to finger-knit with organic plant-dyed yarns. Their day breathes with a natural rhythm and nurtures them with folk tales, puppetry and community. The substantive academic grades curriculum includes special subject classes such as Spanish, Music, Handwork, Games, Eurythmy, Orchestra, Sculpture, and Woodworking. Our integrated approach enables creative, confident, independent thinkers who upon graduating are sought after and go on to their top choice of high schools including selective public magnet high schools, independent schools, public and parochial schools. Your child deserves an education that fills them with beauty, meaning and wonder. They deserve an education that is joyful, creative, advanced, and substantive and an education that engages their minds, hearts, and imaginations. Rudolf Steiner succinctly captured the aims of Waldorf Education when he wrote, “Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings, who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives.” The Waldorf School of Philadelphia realizes these aims by seeking to balance the intellectual, emotional and practical life of the child so that they grow into a human being capable of transforming our world.

Quaker principles and practice guide our school. With excellence as our standard, we challenge students in a vigorous program of academics, arts and athletics. We inspire students to be thinkers, collaborators, innovators and leaders.

28

Guide to Schools

Penn Charter integrates the power of arts and athletics into a vigorous academic experience that cultivates strong, creative and resilient young people who are ready to embrace new opportunities. “These are students who will take on the world,” Head of School Darryl J. Ford told a gathering of parents. “They are capable of wrestling with great ideas, resolving impossible problems, discovering the undiscovered.” “Educating students to live lives that make a difference,” the school’s vision statement, reflects Penn Charter’s roots in Quaker values and education. Established in 1689 by Philadelphia Friends and William Penn, the school was among the first to offer education to people of different religions (1689), financial aid (1701), education for girls (1754) and education for all races (1770). Today, Penn Charter supports this history of access with a $9 million financial aid budget. The school’s endowment, one of the largest among independent schools, provides financial stability and supports a 47-acre campus with outstanding facilities; successful college counseling; stellar teachers and a college preparatory program with a national reputation for excellence. IdeaLabs — the latest addition to a network of lab and activity spaces that include a woodshop in Lower School, science labs and art studios, outdoor learning spaces and a music lab — exemplify Penn Charter’s longstanding commitment to innovation. More than a makerspace, IdeaLabs offer a maker lab, a media lab and a creative lab — a trio designed to develop the core competencies of creation, communication and collaboration. A classic education, renewed and refined.

OPEN HOUSE DATES:

Thurs., Oct. 11, 2018 9:30am & 5pm Sat., Nov. 3, 2018 • 10am (Elementary/Middle School)

Wilmington Montessori School is a collaborative learning community rooted in Montessori principles, inspiring the joyful discovery of self and a passion for learning and independent thinking. We empower children to be knowledgeable and responsible contributors to the global community.

Since 1964, Wilmington Montessori School has remained committed to the evidence-based educational methods Maria Montessori developed during the early 20th century. Today those core principles — engaging children in an environment of discovery, critical thinking and problem-solving to create passionate learners — continue to drive WMS. Our spacious facilities, 25-acre campus, and close-knit community provide a safe and inclusive environment for joyful discovery and hands-on learning. Teachers focus on the development of the whole child, including academic, social and personal growth, and accept each child for who he or she is as a learner. Parents are active partners in the education of their children. A WMS education prepares students for success in high school and beyond. While technology did not exist when Dr. Montessori was alive, it has become an integral part of our curriculum at the elementary and middle-school levels. At WMS, technology is not a substitute for instruction from teachers and hands-on work; it is integrated into the curriculum, used for creative projects, research, communication and more. Likewise, the concept of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education has only emerged during the past decade, but the integration of these areas of the curriculum aligns perfectly with the Montessori philosophy. WMS is home to three Maker Studios in which students use materials discover, build, investigate, create and learn. Visit us to find out how WMS will help your child become a capable, compassionate and responsible global citizen. Experience the WMS difference.

Guide to Schools

Inspiring Confident, Compassionate Leaders

Since 1856, the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur has educated, empowered, and inspired young women for a lifetime of compassionate leadership and service. Beginning in the sixth grade, every aspect of a Notre Dame education builds the academic skills, personal abilities, and spiritual foundation needed to excel in college and beyond. While challenging courses mark the Academy’s academic rigor, Notre Dame is a caring, spiritual community, guided by the faith tradition of the Catholic Church, the service of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and the school’s Honor Code.

• Students in all grades receive an Apple MacBook Air laptop to integrate technology with 21st century learning. • A state-of-the-art Center for STEM Education, now under construction, supports a comprehensive STEMbased science curriculum; independent scientific research; and development of critical thinking and communication skills. • The Academy’s Center for Global Leadership links students to an international community of sister schools for global learning opportunities and exchanges. • A progressive study of World Languages begins in grade six with a survey of French, Latin, Mandarin, and Spanish and continues through Advanced Placement. • Dance, fine and performing arts, music, athletics, campus ministry, and activity clubs give every student the opportunity to explore her unique gifts. How will Notre Dame inspire your daughter? Visit campus for personal tour or attend our Open House on Sunday, September 30 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. For more information, visit ndapa.org/openhouse. Guide to Schools

It’s not about forcing a fit; it’s about finding a place. Pathway could be the place for your student during the school year and/or during the Extended School Year (ESY) program. For over 55 years, Pathway has been serving students with neurological impairment, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, psychological disorders and serious emotional disturbance. Pathway provides educational and therapeutic services to young people with significant learning, social emotional and executive functioning needs. Pathway’s Therapeutic Academic Program assists students with various abilities and needs continue to increase their independence through academic work, social skills development, emotional regulation, behavioral control, pre-vocational skills building and life skills instruction. The program serves students age 5-21 in small classrooms with skilled professionals and various related service staff.

Pathway also offers an Emotional Support Program for students ages 5-13 with social skills deficits, interpersonal needs, and the inability to learn due to inferring behaviors. The Emotional Support Program focuses on academic, social, interpersonal and selfcontrol skills so that they can return to their home school district. The Extended School Year (ESY) program has various options that focus on each student’s affective, academic, social, communication, and functional needs in various structured learning environments in school and in the community. Recreation clubs and community integration are a large part of the ESY program. The Bridge to College Program, in partnership with Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), develops the skills necessary to make the transition from high school to college. This program introduces students to

campus life, teaches techniques to reduce the anxiety related to a college atmosphere, and develops the social and organizational skills necessary to promote independence in college. The program is available as part of our Therapeutic Academic Program and also for ESY. For additional information, please visit www.pathwayschool. org or contact Diana Phifer at 610277-0660 ext 289
