Several children die in Mont. plane crash SXSW

Austin-tatious endings and beginnings page 11

FAA: Kids on way to ski trip before aircraft went down in cemetery A number of children were killed yesterday when their plane crashed into a cemetery in remote Montana, according to the Federal Aviation Authority.

“All of a sudden the pilot lost control and went into a nosedive. He couldn’t pull out in time and crashed into the trees of the cemetery.” Eyewitness

The FAA said it was thought the children were going on a skiing trip when their single-engine Pilatus PC-12 aircraft plunged to the ground near the Butte airport yesterday afternoon. There was confusion last night as to the number of dead passen-

gers and crewmembers. The FAA reported the number as 17, but the Pilatus PC-12 is usually only licensed to carry nine or 10 passengers, plus a crew of one. An eyewitness to the crash told the Montana Standard newspaper the plane was doing steep an-

gular turns before spiraling down. “All of a sudden the pilot lost control and went into a nosedive,” said Kenny Gulick, 14. “He couldn’t pull out in time and crashed into the trees of the cemetery.” A Los Angeles-based FAA offi-

cial said the plane had taken off from Redlands, Calif., yesterday, stopping in Vacaville before heading for Oroville, Calif. Tom Hagler, a mechanic at the Oroville airport, said last night that he let about a dozen children who were on the plane use the airport bathroom. From Oroville it was headed to the ski resort of Bozeman but diverted at some stage during the flight. The reason for the diversion unknown. METRO NICOLAUS CZARNECKI/METRO

Trail begins in rape of disabled

“I can tell you, I’m going to bring my ‘A’ game and I think they should look forward to bringing theirs as well.” Gov. Deval Patrick said when asked about potential opponents vying for his job, including Treasurer Timothy Cahill, who gave a “tenative yes” to a gubernatorial bid in 2010.

Traffic stop to drug bust A simple traffic stop Saturday turned into a large drug bust. At 3 a.m., a trooper pulled over a car crossing the double yellow line in Quincy. The driver, Fran Mathieu, 24, of Randolph, admitted he had marijuana. The trooper found $15,000 worth of crack cocaine and $1,700 in cash. Mathieu was arrested. METRO

BOSTON. A Massachusetts man is headed to trial for the rape of a man with mental disability. William Senay, Jr., of Fall River is charged with rape and indecent assault and battery on the 25-year-old man. Senay’s nephew, Buddy Smith, was convicted in January of raping the victim multiple times from 2004 to 2006. Smith is currently serving seven to 10 years in prison. Jury selection for Senay’s trial begins today at Taunton Superior Court. Senay faces an additional charge of witness intimidation in New Bedford District Court for allegedly following a member of the victim’s family after a pretrial hearing. METRO

Jackie MacDonald, 28, celebrated five birthdays, a “going-away party” and “coming-home party” in the old location, which officially closed Saturday night. She still recalls her first visit. “I was blown away,” said MacDonald, who had a par-

Rose called the establishment — which will open anew in April — a “community living room” and said the broad support for a neighborhood original is important in difficult economic times. “We’re all in this together,” he said. The new location at The Brewery complex will feature more outdoor seating but no space for its signature candlepin lanes. Judging by yesterday’s turnout, slight changes in the offerings appear inconsequential.

Why is there no MBTA bus route along Washington Street from Newton Corner to Natick Center? The route would include the Woodland MBTA station, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, various business and medical offices, three colleges and numerous stores and shopping areas. Thank you, DREW

In general, a bus route along this corridor would be competing for passengers with the Framingham/ Worcester Commuter Rail line, which includes station stops at Natick, Wellesley Square, West Newton, and Newtonville Stations, among others. With MBTA resources presently stretched to their limits, it would be difficult at this time to introduce a new service that would serve a corridor already being served by another MBTA service. It should be noted that opportunities exist for transferring between the Green Line and bus service in Natick. The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority operates several bus routes in Natick and Framingham, including the MWRTA Route 1 bus route that serves Route 9 in Natick. Patrick calls for state employee pension reform BOSTON. Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday discussed his support for reforms targeting “egregious” public employee pension system abuses and loopholes, hosting a press conference that the Senate’s top Republican labeled damage control. Saying he hoped his ideas would be incorporated into a bill being developed by the House, Patrick outlined a series of reform measures, in-

cluding ending state employee eligibility to collect an entire year’s worth of benefits for working just one out of 365 days. Already on lawmakers’ todo list for this session, the reform ideas Patrick outlined are meant to “re-establish the financial integrity of the pension system” and to “regain the public’s confidence and trust in state government by eliminating

some of these abuses,” the governor said. METRO/SHNS

Taking it back Another aspect of Patrick’s reform plans limits benefit calculation criteria to salary and wages, prohibiting pensioners from factoring things like housing and transportation allowances into their compensation packages.

BOSTON. Jury selection is expected to begin today in the trial of a man accused of a gruesome Fenway murder 18 years ago, one of six alleged killers before Suffolk County juries this week. Kurvin Richardson, 38, is accused of killing 18-yearold Noemi Roman — his then-girlfriend’s sister — as the victim's toddler son looked on. Richardson was arrested in 2005 after DNA evidence linked him to the Peterborough Street crime. According to prosecutors, Roman’s body was found by firefighters responding to a gas leak. She was left beaten and stabbed beside a stove that had been stuffed with aerosol cans and turned on. Also on trial this week: Quincy Butler, 35, and William Wood, 34: Prosecution testimony is underway, charging Butler and Wood with murdering a 59-year-old woman and shooting her 48-year-old roommate in the eye during a botched robbery in Feb. 2004. Manuel “Spank” Andrade, 35: One of two men charged in the shootout that claimed the life of 22-year-old Chiara Levin outside a Dorchester house party two years ago. Andrade’s target in the shootout, Casimiro Barros, was convicted last month of voluntary manslaughter.

There are two camps out there, and we’re not talking Democrats versus Republicans. We’re talking President Barack Obama versus everyone else. As even some loyal Democrats begin to slip away from Obama’s economic plans, expressing skepticism that even a second stimulus will have lasting effects on the economy, the debate is heating up: Is this recession becoming a failure of “the Obama economy,” or is it still the enduring mess of the Bush administration? Well, that measure won’t be gauged by Washington’s political players, said finance expert Bruce Fenton. Hamas: Obama is opening doors President Barack Obama is using a “new language” in relations with the Middle East and an official overture toward Hamas is only a matter of time, the Islamist group’s leader Khaled Meshaal said in a newspaper interview. “A new language toward the region is coming from President Obama. The challenge for everybody is for this to be the prelude for a genuine change,” Meshaal told Italian daily La Repubblica. REUTERS ROME.

Pope warns Africa: Let go‘cloudsof evil’ Pope Benedict, addressing the biggest crowd of his trip, yesterday challenged Africans to cast aside the “clouds of evil” of wars, corruption and tribal strife and forge a new path to peace and prosperity.

“Tragically, the clouds of evil have also overshadowed Africa, including this beloved nation of Angola.” Benedict

On his last full day in Africa he said a Mass for a crowd estimated by police and organizers at some one million people. At its start, he prayed for two women killed in a stadium stampede at one of his events. Two women in their early 20s were killed in a stampede to enter the stadium in central Luanda several hours before the pope presided at a youth rally on Saturday. The Vatican said it had been told that up to 40 people were injured.

In his last major message, read from a massive platform covered by a huge canopy to shelter him from the sun, the pope drove home a message he has been sounding for a week — that Africa had to shed its systemic ills. He said the continent had too often seen “the destructive power of civil strife, the descent into a maelstrom of hatred and revenge, the squandering of the efforts of generations of good people.” REUTERS

INTERVIEW.

You make a great case for saving money while you’re young, but what about people who have been saving, only to see their 401(K)s and IRAs take a giant hit?

Stocks have had great runs and then long periods when

they didn’t do so well. The point is, many of the smartest people I know believe that over the next 20, 30 or 40 years, stocks will likely beat out other investments for people in their 20s and 30s. And that’s why it makes sense to put some of your longterm money — money you won’t need to touch for many years — into a 401(k) or an IRA. What is the No. 1 thing 20- to 30-yearolds can do with their money?

Contribute to your 401(k) up to the limit your company will match. Seriously. The matching funds make this the best investment you can ever make; it truly is free money and there are ways to tap it in an emergency. Also, pay off highrate debt. I know it’s hard, but even paying $10 more

than what your credit card company asks for every month makes a huge difference. Why are young people irresponsible with money?

No generation has been so bombarded with credit cards while they were in college with no job. No previous set of twentysomethings has entered the work world with such massively large student loan obligations, so they are starting at a tough place. If you feel layoffs looming, what should you do?

Tighten your belt: Eat out less, put off big purchases like a vacation or a new computer. Get used to a lower standard of living before a layoff forces you to cut back.

Why is it so important for youth to be financially responsible?

On top of the usual problems of starting a household and a career, young people often have to wrestle with massive student loan debt ($20,000 on average) and run the risk of running up huge medical bills (one in four are uninsured). With these factors, it’s even more important to make every dollar you have count. The good news is that you’re young, so good habits you start today have more time to work in your favor.

10 careers & wealth Spending slow as home sales still fall ECONOMY. U.S. consumer spending probably slowed in February as business investments and housing tumbled, underscoring the urgency of government efforts to thwart a deeper recession, economists said this week. Purchases rose 0.2 percent after gaining 0.6 percent in January, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey ahead of Commerce Department figures due March 27. Combined sales of new and existing homes likely dropped to the lowest level in at least a decade, and orders for durable goods fell for a seventh straight month, other reports may show. Mounting job losses and shrinking wealth are squeezing the consumer spending that makes up about 70 percent of the economy as Americans forego expensive items such as cars and homes. The economy may keep shrinking until Obama administration and Federal Reserve initiatives to calm credit markets take hold. “Consumers will be more inclined to put off bigger-ticket purchases until they start to see a deceleration in job losses,” said Maxwell Clarke, chief U.S. economist at IDEAglobal. GREG ST. MARTIN greg.stmartin@metro.us

Marguerite Gallinaro has worked in corporate communications and as a marketing manager in many areas over the years — retail, publishing and real estate, to name a few. “I like the challenge. I like the stimulation of it,” Gallinaro said of her passion for marketing and coordinating projects. “I like to make things happen.” However, in September Gallinaro joined the rapidly rising number of unemployed workers in the Bay State — which faces a daunting 7.8 percent jobless rate as of last week — and the Quincy woman has since been forced to market herself in hopes of landing a new job. She admits it has been frustrating at times, given that the job market, in her words, “is saturated with quality candidates.” But the experience has also helped her gain a new perspective on the situation.

Tips on tipping

I

once had a server who didn’t actually serve me much of anything. I ended up getting my own syrup for my cold pancakes and a glass of juice from the bar. I still left him gratuity. It’s the former service worker in me that feels like I have to do this to supplement his income, and if it was great service I would have been overly generous. But what is right in this situation, and what constitutes overly generous? There always seems to be some confusion when it comes to tipping. Take your barista, for example: Does she automatically get your spare change in her cup? What about the guy who hands you your bag of takeout: Does he get a couple of dollars? Etiquette experts say it’s not necessary, but might be wise if you see them often. While at home, if there are services you are unsure about how much to tip, call ahead and ask what the norm is. In situations where there can be multiple people looking after you, such as a spa, the easiest thing to do is tip 15 to 20 percent on the bill, and ask that the tip be dispersed amongst the staff that attended to you. When travelling, it’s best to keep a bunch of small bills on hand so that you’re prepared and don’t feel awkward asking for change or giving more than you wanted to. Be sure to check into the cultural norms wherever you are visiting. In any case, never leave zero if you were unhappy with the service without speaking to a manager first. Not leaving anything just makes you look cheap and won’t solve the problem. You may receive some kind of compensation for letting someone know about the problem so they can fix it. For tips on paying down debt and increasing your savings, pick up Smart Cookies Guide to Making More Dough, available at all major bookstores.

“Being moved by a performer is almost narcotic.”

PAT HEALY/METRO

The final three days of the SXSW Music and Media Conference in Austin were full of more surprises and more arguments why you absolutely need to see an act perform live to know what they’re really about. The feeling of being moved by a performer is almost narcotic, especially when you don’t expect it. Having hoofed out of the downtown area to a charming oasis called Ms. Bea’s, I was underwhelmed by the much buzzed about Vivian Girls on Friday, and was prepared to give the next band one song before heading back to the main drag. But from the first stinging note Titus Andronicus singer Andrew Cedermark sang, I was hooked. The band from Glenrock, N.J.,

If the rush of finding this feeling is narcotic, I became like a junkie the next day, chasing the same high. Ms. Bea’s itself is a tiny watering hole; it was not uncommon for a Harley to cut through the dirt parking lot. The smell of barbecue would surf in from out front on waves of cool wind. And speaking of surfing, passing people over the crowd seems to be making a huge comeback. Other highlights at Ms. Bea’s were Thee Oh Sees, a San Francisco five-piece that play driving good-time sounds, and the Brooklyn duo Japanther, who play along to pre-recorded cassette tracks and had a presence of sheer positivity, quoting the Zulu Nation mantra of peace, love, unity and having fun.

Everyone’s saying ‘I Love You, Man’ Pumpkins lose another Dorothy Robinson dorothy.robinson@metro.us

The stars and director tell us about their bromance SARAH SHANFIELD letters@metro.us

“I Love You, Man,” starring Paul Rudd and Jason Segel as platonic lovers, may be a ploy to convince girlfriends to embrace their boyfriends’ boyfriends and stop trying to get rid of them and their baggy, unwashed pants. “I think you’re absolutely right; it’s an exercise in breaking down stereotypes,” says Segel. “It’s an honest look at what male friendships can be like.” “This is a story about what it’s like to try and make a friend,” agrees Rudd. “It’s hard!” Maybe not for these guys. Segel describes his first meeting with his co-star and director, John Hamburg, as a “love fest,” which would be the appropriate way to describe their meeting now. They gaze at each other with the giddy smiles that a girl can only dream a guy would flash her way. Despite looking like a male-centric movie, the film’s witty writing success-

It goes on to assure fans that the ever-humble Corgan, the only original Pumpkin remaining, “will continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins.” Billy, we’ve suspected as much since the lovely D’arcy left, but it looks like you’re the vampire here. And not the hot, bedheaded, sparkling kind.

Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the band. While we’re sure Chamberlin is far from a perfect coworker — he stepped out for a bit in 1996 after a particularly nasty heroin incident that left touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin dead — it’s pretty obvious that notoriously moody frontman Billy Corgan didn’t help the situation. A post on the band’s Web site states that Corgan an-

And while “I Love You, Man”’s lack of raunchy humor may disappoint those who expected another “Superbad,” plenty of ladies will relate to the proverbial disgruntled girlfriend (played by Rashida Jones), whose wedding plans are interrupted as her fiance (Rudd) goes on a search for his best man. “I think Paul, Jason and I are some of the most sensi-

tive men on the planet, and we were just waiting for the world to catch up with us,” Hamburg insists. The trio does seem to have guy love figured out, as Segel generously gives his pals shoulder rubs. They are indeed comfortable around each other, never questioning boundaries. “At one point in filming I was getting some sleep and I felt Paul’s tender touch on my shoulder,” says Segel.

“He said, ‘Hey buddy, get up, they need you on set, little man.’ And I slowly open my eyes to find Paul standing there. …” As a giant grin creeps across Rudd’s face, they are reminded that there’s a lady present. They don’t care. Segel finishes his story. “And then he winked at me and walked out of the room.” Perhaps girls have nothing to be jealous of after all.

f course there was the apology Obama had to deliver to a then-hospitalized Nancy Reagan after he joked that the former first lady talked to the dead by holding séances. (She actually met with astrologers, not spiritualists.) But the most offensive part of Obama’s put-down of the athletes in the Special Olympics is the apology released by the White House. His press secretary Robert Gibbs put out a statement saying that Obama was making a self-deprecating remark. Obama — cementing the notion that he is more comfortable with Stevie Wonder’s serenading than he is with dealing with disaster — did not attack himself. After all, Farrakhan called Obama “the Messiah.” The president is clearly believing his own press.

For today’s puzzle answers

here must be a reason that President Obama is so attached to his teleprompter that he once had staffers stretch out long lengths of cord on the dung-covered field of a country rodeo during the campaign so he could read his speech rather than deliver it. Having the teleprompter is a smart move, because without it Obama’s mouth is messier than the manure his staffers had to wade through in Pueblo, Colo. Long before Obama infuriated the disabled and their families with his remarkably stupid remark on Leno last week, the president had dropped plenty of offensive off-the-cuff remarks. Who could forget these dandy attempts at comedy: “Hang on a minute sweetie,” was Obama’s response to a female reporter after she asked the then-candidate a tough question about the failing auto industry and the decrepit conditions in Detroit, Mich., that came with the job losses. He nevHe described er did answer the question. Then he described the his woman who raised him, his grandmother very own grandmother, as a white person” — a as a “typical “typical flagrantly racist remark that would not have been toleratwhite ed if Hillary Clinton had person.” made it of any ethnicity. Who could forget the favor Obama did for the scads of insecure, robustly-built young girls when he chuckled with Matt Lauer on the Today show about Jessica Simpson, saying the self-made star is “losing a weight battle, apparently.”

Clock’s ticking so get moving How to stay focused and motivated when you’re nothing but a procrastinator

No more drama Jonathan Alpert www.jonathanalpert.com

I have the hardest time staying motivated and getting things done. I’m 28 years old and have been a procrastinator for as long as I can remember. I have no idea why I do this and sometimes I think if I didn’t put things off I’d be really accomplished and would achieve greatness.

Q

There is a litany of reasons as to why one procrastinates. Poor time management, feeling overwhelmed unrealistic standards or plain laziness are just a few possibilities. Procrastination can lead to feelings of guilt, inadequacy, stress, and depression — all of which can kill motivation and perpetuate the unproductive cycle.

A

things that are positive? For example, you work really hard knowing there’s a bonus at the

end of the quarter. Or are you a slacker sitting on your butt until your boss comes around and threatens to fire you, only then making your move to avoid the negative?

2

Whichever the case, use it to your advantage. Think about the amount of stress that’s been caused by putting things off and how much frustration will be caused if you continue not to take action. Imagine how good you’ll feel once you finally do act. Compare the cost of taking action to not taking it at all. This will motivate you.

Here’s how to break it:

1

Understand your motivation. Are you the type of person motivated towards

“Think about the amount of stress that’s been caused by putting things off and how much frustration will be caused if you continue not to take action.” Alpert

3

Set goals that are fueled by passion and represent what you truly want. Break the larger goals into smaller ones and make certain they’re realistic. Then write down a reasonable plan with a deadline and reward yourself for each accomplishment.

4

Change your language. Avoid phrases such as “I can’t” and “I have to” and re place them with resultsoriented language such as “I will” and “I choose to.”

5

Still procrastinating? Try this: Draw a line down the middle of a page. On the left side list how life will be different in one year should you accomplish your goals and on the right how it will be in one year having not accomplished your goals. Both will yield powerful information that will drive you forward.

Chef and reality star on Bravo’s “Real Housewives of New York City,” Bethenny Frankel wants to rid all women of body-envy aimed at those who claim to be ‘naturally thin.’ She offers a plan for staying slim with her new book “Naturally Thin” [Simon and Schuster, $16]. Yes, that golden chalice of dieting culture, to never ‘diet’ again, she says is indeed attainable. The general premise of Frankel’s “naturally thin” plan is to eat organic foods when possible, to allow yourself a little indulgence when you need it — the key word being “little” as in, a taste — and of course to exercise moderation. Frankel emphasizes that the plan will only work if you set realistic expectations and exercise impulse control. “If you walk into a party and you see a good looking guy, you don’t walk up to him and say you love him and you want to marry

Revolution:

NU hoops:

The Huskies are in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational — it’s like the NIT’s NIT — at Texas-El Paso tonight (10 p.m.) The winner plays Wednesday, and the bestof-three championship series starts March 30.

Patriots:

Every day brings us a little closer to training camp. Talk about a deal for Julius Peppers has cooled, but the Pats and Panthers can’t even technically discuss a deal until Peppers signs his franchise-player offer. A deal could take a while.

cles is no surprise, given the way the tournament has played out. With the field of 65 whittled to the Sweet 16, only one survivor — No. 12 Arizona — has a seed in the teens. Not a single No. 1, 2 or 3 seed has fallen yet, though just two fourth-seeded squads are still dancing. Boston College lost to USC on Saturday. METRO

by Nick Cammarota

Three things we saw yesterday: Second half of the first period: The Bruins cranked up the pressure early. Once the B’s endured New Jersey’s initial energyfilled onslaught, they controlled the pace of the game, won the majority of battles in the corners and dominated special teams play. Those 10 minutes of action set the tone for, arguably, the year’s biggest win.

1

Power of change: While it was Boston’s loose-yetinspired effort during 5-on-5 that dictated the tempo of the game, two power-play goals from a tweaked unit certainly didn’t hurt. Michael Ryder and Marc Savard scored on Boston’s four opportunities on the man-advantage, upping the Bruins’ league-best home PP percentage to 27.9.

So far, so good. The Revs opened the 2009 regular season with a 1-0 road victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday. Kheli Dube scored the New England goal in the 55th minute. They’re against the Red Bulls at Giants Stadium on Saturday.

The Red Sox optioned former Japanese league hurler Junichi Tazawa to Double-A Portland yesterday. Michael Bowden was also sent down. METRO

Bruins:

Three games in 13 days ... this is the life. The B’s hosted the Devils yesterday afternoon, and don’t take the ice again until a Saturday date at Toronto (7 p.m., NESN). They’re in the playoffs and they’ll win the Northeast, but how far can they advance?

Sent down

Goaltending: Maybe the Bruins just need to face Martin Brodeur every time out. The winningest goaltender in NHL history didn’t appear himself, allowing four goals on 30 shots. The other three times the Bruins met the Devils this season, they faced Scott Clemmensen, who went 2-1 against them with a .951 save percentage.

3

Up next: Saturday at Toronto (30-30-13), 7 p.m., NESN Our take: Hard-working team fighting for their playoff lives. Another 60-minute effort by the Bruins would be encouraging. Injuries: Olaf Kolzig and Jamie Heward on IR for the Leafs.

teroids do for baseball players what MTV did for music. They take players of varying abilities to the next level. MTV did the same thing in the ’80s for bands and artists ranging in talent and popularity from Michael Jackson and Madonna to Corey Hart and A Flock of Seagulls. Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Mark McGwire (allegedly, except for A-Rod) were superstars who went to mega-superstar status with a little steroid boost. For Michael Jackson, doing steroids meant getting his “Thriller” video to run dozens of times daily on MTV. Fans watched over and over, learned the moves, fell in love and, of course, bought the album. Television was the perfect vehicle to cultivate an image. How else would Madonna become a sex symbol if she didn’t roll around on the ground in black lace? Michael and Madonna were stars with plenty of pop, but the MTV generation became their steroid era. The same is true for guys like Jason Giambi and Miguel Tejada, allegedly. They’d probably be very good players without any artificial sweeteners, but they took a shot, so to speak, and became MVPcaliber players. They’re Huey Lewis, Billy Idol, and Cindy Lauper. Like Culture Club and Wham, they probably would have found an audience and been successful acts, but the constant playing of creative videos made them bigger and stronger players in the music world. Take it down another level, and you’ll find guys using steroids that otherwise might have floundered in the minor leagues and would never have been heard from. Instead, they get a few years in the big leagues, and they make some money. Think Kajagoogoo. Dexy’s Midnight Runners. And Spandau Ballet. Every artist benefited from MTV. And they were all doing it. They spent money to make money. Even the ones like Sting, Dire Straits and Bruce Springsteen, who didn’t need to, were swimming in the same creative and costly waters as Rick Springfield, Thomas Dolby and Don Johnson. That’s right. Don’t think we’ve forgotten about “Heartbeat.” And in the end, even if fans were duped into believing artists were better than they were, and other than the mild embarrassment of admitting that they went around singing “Karma Chameleon” for a month, nobody got hurt. Fans were simply entertained. They thought music was bigger and better than it was, but when the phenomenon of the ’80s was over, music continued pretty much as it had been before. Of course, MTV wasn’t illegal.

To most NBA executives, the rule has been a positive. They can evaluate prospects against better competition and therefore not make a multi-million dollar high school blunder like Kwame Brown or Korleone Young. But what about the college game? HEA title in hand, BU heads to tourney JEFF HOWE jeff.howe@metro.us

Boston University has won five championships this season, boasts two Hobey Baker Award semifinalists and is the No. 1 overall seed heading into the NCAA men’s hockey tournament. Without four more victories, though, the Terriers won’t be much impressed. “During the playoffs,” freshman goalie Kieran Millan said, “you can’t really dwell on things that happen in the past.” Millan was named Hockey East Tournament MVP after the Terriers claimed the league championship Saturday with a 1-0 victory against

UMass Lowell at TD Banknorth Garden. BU (31-6-4) has also won three in-season tournaments — the Ice Breaker Invitational, Denver Cup and Beanpot — and the Hockey East regular-season title. The Terriers have a laundry list of individual honors, too, with Millan being selected as the league’s rookie of the year, plus six Hockey East all-stars and a pair of Hobey Baker candidates in senior defenseman Matt Gilroy and sophomore forward Colin Wilson. Huskies happy with spot COLLEGE HOCKEY. Four. Three years ago, that was one more win then the Huskies had during head coach Greg Cronin's first season on Huntington Avenue. Now that's the number of wins Northeastern needs to get the one that matters: a national title. The Huskies’ rise from an afterthought to national contender has been well

documented, but it reached a pinnacle yesterday when NU was picked for the NCAA tournament in front of a room of cheering fans. The fifth-ranked Huskies are seeded second in the Midwest Regional and will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., to face No. 9 Cornell at 4 p.m. Saturday. Captain Joe Vitale was one of six active seniors

who was on the team during the three-win year. “It's definitely a fun experience, it's unbelievable actually,” he said. “[From] three wins freshman year to walking into a room like this with media and ESPN and all the great fans. When I look back on my experience it’s going to be a special moment.” METRO/NATE OWEN

Jessie Vetter celebrates.

Vetter, Wisconsin crowned COLLEGE HOCKEY. Wisconsin won its fourth women’s national title in five years yesterday, beating Mercyhurst 5-0 at Agganis Arena behind goalie Jessie Vetter’s fifth career Frozen Four shutout. Vetter surpassed her previous season high of 35 saves with 37 in the championship game, after notching 28 in the semifinals. In eight Frozen Four appearances, Vetter has a 7-1 record and has allowed just six goals. Vetter has led her team

to an 11-1 NCAA tournament record. The senior goalie set six NCAA records this season: career shutouts (39), season shutouts (14) and career wins (91). “Vetter’s a great goaltender,” Mercyhurst forward Meghan Agosta said. “I thought she kept her team in at key points.” In the later periods, as the Badgers built a fivegoal lead, Vetter continued to see shots and keep them out.
