landlord fined €56,000 for 10 unregistered flats

A LANDLORD who was renting out ten properties on the same road, including eight flats, has been fined €55,750 for not registering them after he repeatedly ignored warning letters, and didn’t show up for court. The Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) issued proceedings against John Maguire Jnr after he failed to respond to four separate warning letters. The landlord, of Moneynamuck, Galmoy, Co Kilkenny, had tenancies at 21 and 23 North Circular Road, Dublin 7, as well as flats 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 at 35 North Circular Road which he hadn’t registered. Convicting him in his absence, District Court judge John O’Neill said Maguire had been given ‘ample notice’ of his obligations and was aware of the consequences of not dealing with the matter.

by miChael maCkey

A PRTB officer told the court the tenancies have still not been registered and that the cost of registering a tenancy on time was €90 and the late registration fee was €180 per instance. Maguire was fined €2,500 plus the same in legal costs for each tenancy, bringing the total in fines and costs to €55,750. Landlords, if convicted under the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 for failing to comply with a notice, can face a maximum fine of up to €4,000 and/or six months in jail, along with a daily fine of €250 for a continuing offence. The case will no doubt be a warning to rogue and ‘accidental’ landlords who are renting properties ‘off the books’, and the PRTB said it would be taking similar prosecutions.

Brad Pitt’s abs put us off showbiz life, says Oliver

His 36-year-old fiancée’s mother Katharine said: ‘We’re The happy couple: Benedict and Sophie just really happy for them. it’s a fabulous day.’ The Sherlock star, 38, made the engagement official with a newspaper notice yesterday. However, some of his female fans were not so impressed. ‘Cumberbatch is engaged, i have nothing left to live for. Goodbye world,’ one tweeted.

Mother-of-four Jools said Pitt’s posing – while hubby Jamie cooked for Brad and his showbiz pals – was too much to stomach. ‘Jamie was doing the dinner, so I had to sit and socialise with Brad and Rachel and Monica [referring to Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox as their Friends characters],’ she said. ‘I was so embarrassed, I didn’t know what to say. ‘Brad had just done Troy and was taking his top off to show me his abs. ‘From that moment on I just kind of took a step back from it all, it was all

I once took Daisy to sit outside [Harry’s] house after school. ‘We sat there for ages in the car and got really excited when he came out.’ Despite 39-year-old chef Oliver’s hectic schedule opening restaurants and campaigning for healthy school dinners in the UK, Jools is keen to match Brad and Angelina’s king-size family with six kids. ‘Well, it would be amazing to have twins,’ said the 36-year-old, who is mum to Poppy, 12, Daisy Boo, 11, Petal Blossom, five, and four year-old Buddy Bear. ‘I’d like Jamie to work less, but I’m used to it... Concern at rise in sex trafficking EighTy-ThrEE women supported by an agency working with prostitutes last year were trafficked to ireland. ruhama, which began 25 years ago offering outreach services to street-based sex workers, said the number of people illegally brought here to work as prostitutes increased by 17 per cent in 2013. The charity said it has assisted 2,500 women from 60 countries since 1989. More than 300 were given direct support in the last year. ruhama said the number of women accessing support in 2013 increased by 18 per cent. it also said 219 women were given specific care plans.

city cyclists demand Garda clampdown on bike theft DUBLIN Cycling Campaign is calling for an increase in secure bicycle parking throughout the city after more than 4,500 bikes were stolen in Dublin last year. While that is the official Central Statistics Office figure, campaigners believe that the actual number is much higher as many go unreported. It is also looking for tighter controls on the online selling of second-hand bikes. Campaign researcher David Timony

said: ‘We need a multi-pronged approach, a massive increase in secure bicycle parking throughout the city and more action by the Gardaí to detect and deter bicycle theft. ‘A tighter code of practice for buyers and sellers of second-hand bikes online is also needed, as is more responsibility by cyclists in buying better locks, not buying second-hand stolen bikes and always reporting stolen bikes to the Gardaí.’

Dublin Cycling Campaign (DCC) is also calling on the Department of Transport to set up a co-ordinating body to tackle bike theft. It said that a ‘standard city-type bicycle costs upwards of €700 to replace’ and said that Gardaí are not taking this type of crime seriously. Mike McMillan, from DCC, added: ‘[Gardaí] are treating it as a trivial offence. It’s not, it is a criminal offence.’

Coalition water fight as Labour senators back FF

THE Government played down any threat to the future of the Coalition after an unprecedented split between the ruling parties over the deepening water charges saga. Fine Gael and Labour voted against each other – for the first time since the Government was formed in March 2011 – in the Seanad on a proposal to hold a right-to-water referendum.

by ED CARTy

The schism laid bare tensions within the partnership and heaped further confusion on the public about the new utility bills. It also followed attempts by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to dampen a declaration by Tánaiste Joan Burton that the controversial tap tax should cost a family of two parents and two

adult children less than €200 a year. Under fire about her stance, Fine Gael leader Mr Kenny claimed his Labour counterpart Ms Burton made the remarks in a ‘personal capacity’. Ms Burton revealed her predicted costs to an average family in the Dáil while being questioned by Socialist TD Joe Higgins. Both her own aides and Government sources attempted to

IRISH RAIL had said it was ‘hopeful’ that commuters would not be hit by another evening of rush hour disruption last night following two successive days of signalling issues, but, alas, commuters found themselves delayed around 6pm. All Dart and rail services were stopped on the Drogheda to Greystones line following the signal faults, which struck just before 6pm. The ten-minute delay was not related to the fault of the previous two evenings, a spokesperson said. The company yesterday launched a ‘major investigation’ but was unable to fully identify the source of the fault.

row back on the comments. Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin insisted she could not have been speaking in a personal capacity, as she is the deputy leader and was answering questions in the Dáil . Ms Burton yesterday defended her estimate for a water bill for average families. ‘My personal hope is that for some of the family types who were being described yesterday that the cost of the bill including or net of the water support payment will come in around €200 or below,’ she said. ‘And I’m very confident that the Taoiseach and I are very much on the same page on that.’ Asked if she believed the coalition is now under threat from the fall-out, she replied: ‘I don’t believe so.’

‘The Taoiseach and I are on the same page’

Irish ‘living longer due to science’ ThANKS to modern medicine, irish life-expectancy is now above the European average, say health experts. in the last ten years, the average lifespan in ireland has grown by four years. An irish person can now expect to live up to the grand old age of 80.6 years. in a recent report, the irish Pharmaceutical health Organisation outlined that ‘people in ireland live longer, healthier and more active lives’ than a decade ago. it showed that more than 70 per cent of the increase can be directly attributed to advances in the field of health science.

The upper house had to be suspended twice during heated outbursts over the Fianna Fáil motion demanding a referendum to ensure water is never privatised. The proposal was passed by 37 votes to 15 with Labour backing. Mr Kenny again insisted the Government had not made a decision on the price of water charges yet. The inner Cabinet of Mr Kenny, Ms Burton, Finance Minister Michael Noonan and Public Spending Minister Brendan Howlin are to meet today to debate the imminent charges. It is expected an announcement will be made within the next two weeks. Environment Minster Alan Kelly, who will attend today’s talks, described his party leader Ms Burton’s estimations as a ‘reasonable assessment’ of what could be expected.

Plan to stop exodus from health insurance ‘The time is right to try a new approach’: Minister Leo Varadkar

MINISTER for Health Leo Varadkar yesterday announced measures to stem the tide of people ditching their private health insurance. The Private Health Insurance Package includes a reduction in stamp duty, special lower premiums for young adults, a reduction in the Health Insurance Authority levy and the introduction of the Lifetime Community Rating.

Key recommendations from two reports on private health insurance costs were included, and the package ‘builds on Budget 2015’, a health spokesperson said, which included a freeze on hospital bed charges. Minister Varadkar said: ‘These measures are designed to work as a package and make private health insurance affordable again for as many people as possible. We want to

try and limit the need for increases in premiums, and even secure some reductions if possible. ‘I think the time is right to try a new approach. The economy is growing again and more people are back at work. Following a long period of rising premiums and a severe decline in health insurance cover, the number of policy holders is now showing modest growth.

More than 1,150 litres of homemade alcohol or ‘hooch’ was seized from prisoners in Irish jails last year. The potent homebrew is made by inmates from water, sugar, fruit and bread, which is mixed in plastic bottles and hidden in cells until it ferments. Documents released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 1,157.2l of the alcohol was confiscated from prisoners in the State’s 14 detention centres last year.

a PrOPOSaL to expand the skin colour options for emojis may get the thumbs up from those calling for more diversity in the icons. DAY two of the Web Summit saw more small ironic WiFi glitches, but nobody seemed to care as attendees milled around the RDS in Ballsbridge. Big-name speakers included now-occasional model Lily Cole, footballer Rio Ferdinand, skateboarding god Tony Hawk and House Of Cards producer Dana Brunetti. Cole was plugging her online gift-giving platform, impossible.com, where users can trade things with each other, from help with CVs to language lessons. However, far from being a non-profit or charity, she said she is interested in making it into a sustainable business which will allow it to also do philanthropic work. In the course of her charity

work, Cole also recounted how she had visited Brazil and done a tour of ‘the only wild rubber condom factory in the world’, as part of a project to develop a market for wild rubber grown by forest dwellers as opposed to plantation rubber. Asked if being a celebrity helped open doors, she said: ‘I always bristle at the word “celebrity”’, adding: ‘The product will only work if it’s a good product, the other stuff will only go so far.’

The Dublin Web Summit is all fine and well, says KEN ROGAN, but in the end, all this technology will turn humanity into an infantile, brainless mess

y far the daftest thing about this Web Summit is that you have to attend it. and use your legs to get around, and your arse to sit down, and your hands to clap. This is all very un-internet. The start-up deals are just a ruse – they’ve sunk a well in the rDS from which they’ll steal the nation’s moisture, and when the land is as parched as a shrivelled prune they’ll hightail it back to the desert in California, leaving us with inflated hotel prices and water debt, and the inescapable sense that ‘the future’ paid us a visit, took a dump in our toilet, had a shower, and buggered off again without buying us dinner. Still, that’s what you get for hosting your event in what critics

are calling ‘reality’. This does have advantages though – if your internet connection dies during a webinar, the show’s over. Not so at the Web Summit, where you can still hang out on the set of Top Of The Pops and cheer middle-aged men in tight T-shirts who use phrases like ‘the meaning gap’, which is clever, because as soon as you say ‘I don’t know what that means’, well,

The €50m bouquet... well, it is a van Gogh Blooming expensive: Van n Gogh’s Gogh Vase With Daisies And Poppies ppies sold for €50million PICTURE: aP

A MASTERPIECE painted by Vincent van Gogh weeks before his death has sold for €50million. The 1890 painting, Still Life: Vase With Daisies And Poppies, was one of the few the Dutch artist sold during his lifetime. Expected to fetch between €23million and €38million, it was sold to a private bidder from Asia, Sotheby’s in New York reported.

Van Gogh painted the wildflowers at the French home of his physician, Dr Paul Gachet. The high price, however, is a long way short of the record fee paid for a van Gogh at auction. That stands at €66million for his Portrait Of Dr Gachet, which was sold in 1990. The still life was acquired by one of the founders of the Museum of Modern Art, Conger Goodyear, in

1928. It remained in his family until 1990, when it was sold to its last owner. The painting was not the only item at Tuesday’s auction in Manhattan to excite art collectors. A buyer paid €80.7million for Chariot, a 1951 bronze sculpture of a goddess-like figure perched atop a wheeled chariot, by Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

Thursday the worstday for job accidents

BE on your guard today because Thursday is the most common day to have an accident in work. Forget Friday the 13th, the Injuries Board – the independent government injuries body – have released their annual figures, and most people were hurt on a Thursday during 2013. According to the report, the total amount awarded to injury victims last year was €24million. Some 826 reported workplace accidents occurred – up by 19 from 2012. Payments recorded

‘Men are twice as likely to fall into harm’ by the Board were covered by accident insurance and liable employers. The highest payout for 2013 was €432,000, which concerned the death of a mechanic. A spokesperson for the claims agency said that the quantity reflected the family’s loss of income. Meanwhile, the average compensation for men was €29,523, slightly higher than the €27,441 sum typically received by women. For a man living in Dublin, the job risks are more pronounced. Men are twice as likely to

by LukE HOLOHAn

fall into harm while at work and the Capital ranks top of the liability pile. Patricia Byron, Injuries Board chief executive, noted the increase in accident figures coincided with decreasing unemployment levels. ‘As the economy starts to grow again, and as businesses around the country begin to expand, it is important that a renewed focus on health and safety is cultivated,’ she said. ‘The onus is on us all – business owners, sole traders, and employees – to promote and adhere to the highest levels of health and safety.’ She warned those commuting long distances and workers who drive for a living to ‘heed the advice of agencies such as the Road Safety Authority’. The construction industry, a spokesperson added, was a particularly risky business. However, farming is largely absent from the report as, in the main, farmers are self-employed. Slips, trips and falls were the most frequent accidents, accounting for more than 30 per cent of all awards. Unsurprisingly, Sunday was the safest day of the week.

THE average household will spend up to €1,463 this Christmas – but this is no more than last year according to research carried out by Aviva Home Insurance. One in five people surveyed said they intended to spend less on

presents while 27 per cent said they would cut back on the cost of house decorations. Only 18 per cent of those surveyed said they would cut down on food and drink. Households around the country will have gifts to the value of between €350 and €500 under their Christmas trees this festive season and the average household spend on gifts is around €620, the research found.

Spoilerific trailers are a turn-off CiNema-goers are fed up with trailers that give away a movie’s plot-line or are better than the film itself, researchers have said. a new study, based on responses to a 2013 trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of smaug, found that audiences want trailers which excite, tease and leave them emotionally engaged, without revealing excessive narrative. The research by the University of east anglia’s (Uea) school of art, media and american studies, found that more than 80 per cent of people were left disappointed with a film after seeing its trailer at the cinema. in some cases the promos create expectations that feature films are unable to deliver on and are often considered better than the full film, the researchers added. and many viewers were frustrated at spoilers contained within the trailers that ruined the plot line.

Israel said the number of militants killed was much higher and accused Hamas of using civilians as human shields. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians were killed. Brittany Maynard’s death in Oregon on Saturday, following a public declaration of her motives aimed at sparking political action on the issue, has sparked fierce debate over assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

Ms Maynard, 29, stated she wanted to die with dignity, but Monsignor Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, told ANSA news agency that ‘dignity is something other than putting an end to one’s own life. Brittany Maynard’s act is in itself reprehensible, but what happened in the consciousness we do not know’.

He warned that he was not judging individuals ‘but the gesture in and of itself should be condemned’. Rev Dr Ignacio Castuera, a board member of Oregon-based advocacy group Compassion & Choices, said Ms Maynard was not Catholic and it would be wrong to impose a set of religious beliefs on people who did not share them.

Autograph Pleated skirt €77 We love the fashion-forward hemline and it’ll look great with both court shoes and boots

by Graeme evans A RANGE of fashionable clothes for women helped Marks & Spencer defy expectations by announcing a rise in profits yesterday. The clothing range was cited by chief executive Marc Bolland as one of the reasons half-year earnings were up 2.3 per cent to €340million. ‘Womenswear performance continues to improve with growth in full-price sales and increasingly positive feedback from our customers,’ he said. ‘However, the recent market conditions remain challenging, with unseasonal weather resulting in high levels of promotional activity across the market.’ The British-based retailer is still fighting to turnaround clothing sales overall after the division has seen more than three years of decline. Across the group, sales rose by 1 per cent to €6.2billion in the six months to September 27. Food was in line with the rise but warm weather in September contributed to a 4 per cent fall in general merchandise. M&S, which has been overtaken by rival Next in the UK, is hoping profits will total €845million this year, up from €798million in the previous 12 months. Shares were up 10 per cent after the update. Neil Saunders, of retail consultancy Conlumino, said: ‘Overall, M&S’s school report for this term reads “showing signs of improvement”.’

Drug ‘grows eyelashes’ Irish among Hay fever misery on way big polluters

EyE ExpERTS have discovered a drug used to treat glaucoma can also boost the growth and prominence of eyelashes. In a year-long trial, researchers at Southampton General Hospital and Saint Louis University in the US analysed the effects of a daily application of bimatoprost to the upper eyelid of patients with poor eyelash growth, known as idiopathic hypotrichosis, or eyelash loss, as a result of recent chemotherapy. Conventionally, under the brand name Lumigan, the drug has been used in eye-drop form to decrease the amount of fluid in the eye and reduce eye pressure, treating both glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

The study, published online by the British Journal of Dermatology, offers the first long-term investigation of the drug’s safety and effectiveness as a treatment for lengthening, thickening and darkening eyelashes using direct application to the eyelid. parwez Hossain, a consultant ophthalmologist at Southampton General, said: ‘This study shows bimatoprost is a safe and effective treatment for eyelash growth over a sustained period of time for anyone affected by poor eyelash length, thickness and darkness. It also offers a viable, rapid treatment option for patients who have suffered eyelash loss as a result of chemotherapy.’

IRELAND is among the highest carbon emitters in the world, a new report has revealed. In an environmental impact study conducted by Trócaire, Ireland is ranked as the 35th highest producer of the pollutant. On a European emissions scale, we are in eighth place. In fact, according to the charity, our emissions are currently so high that our island – with a population of more than 4.5million – emits as much carbon as more than 400million of the world’s poorest people.

HAy FEvER sufferers could reach new heights of misery over the next century as pollen levels soar, new research suggests. Scientists predict that higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere will lead to a significant boost in the amount of air-borne grass pollen. Despite increases in ozone, which suppresses plant growth, pollen production is expected to more than treble in the next 100 years. US lead scientist Dr Christine Rogers, from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, said: ‘The implications of increasing CO2 for human health are clear. Stimulation of grass pollen production by

elevated CO2 will increase airborne concentrations and increase exposure and suffering in grass pollen-allergic individuals.” For the study, grass plants grown in special reactor chambers were exposed to different atmospheric gas concentrations. Different ratios of carbon dioxide and ozone were tested to show their effects on grass and pollen production. The scientists found that an atmospheric CO2 concentrations of 800 parts per million – possible by the end of the century according to some forecasts – raised pollen production per grass flower by 53 per cent.

he sartorial staple in any woman’s wardrobe has to be stripes. Until now, this meant Breton jumpers, Tshirts and the occasional dress, but this season calls for a whole new way to wear them. Gone are the classic navy and white nautical styles, and in their place comes a far more directional, modern offering. Marni and Isabel Marant lead the way on the AW14 catwalks, leading to plenty of affordable options coming to the high street. Think tailored pinstripe coats, updated as the new off-duty hero. Or knitwear, which also plays a starring role, coming in a new wave of bold clashing colours. And if that’s all a bit too much, why not tap into this linear trend and amp up your look with some stylish accessories? A faux fur clutch (try ASOS’ version) or stole (Shrimps), perhaps. It’s also time to rethink the way we wear them. Silk shirts will update your workwear in an instant (elizabeth And James is a great choice), or try teaming a horizontal stripe knit with a vertical-style pencil skirt for extra cool points. Or why not keep it classic and go for Seasalt’s chic chunky knit? After all, there’s always room for another stripe in our wardrobes, so give your current wares a muchneeded pick-me-up for autumn and invest in a new-season style.

Stonechat Jewellers has been located in the Westbury Mall since 2012, but they’ve recently made the hop across the hall to number 3-4, a beautiful, bright and bigger space. Owner Ann launched an extensive autumn/winter collection last month and, best of all, a stroll through this relaxed, friendly shop affords you a look at just how these modern, imaginative and altogether personal pieces are made as jewellers and goldsmiths like Jemma and Maria work away. If you’re in the market for a Christmas engagement ring, check out some of our favourites from Stockholm-based Michael O’Dwyer’s stunning collection.

Salon Pro

With Christmas rapidly approaching, we’re dreaming of all things red. This week we trialled two shades from the Rimmel Kate Moss Salon PRO range with Lycra. We loved Venus, a plummy colour very suited to bluer skin tones and Rock N Roll is a truer red, a vampy pillarbox tone suited to pairing with a set of killer heels and a slick of crimson lipstick. Chip-resistant with a salon gel finish, the varnish promises ten days of wear. Seems a bit optimistic to us, but it is hard-wearing. RRP price €6.49, available in pharmacies and major stores countrywide.

La Roche Posay Cream

The mercury’s dropping and it’s wreaking havoc with our skin. La Roche Posay’s innovation Lipikar Baume AP+ is a lifesaver. It’s a really thick balm intended for eczematics and those with irritated skin complaints – and delivers on its promise of anti-scratching and immediate soothing – but it’s also brilliant for skin that needs an extra boost of moisture as dry chill winds take their toll. It’s an all-over balm and super concentrated, so don’t overdo it or it’ll take a while to sink in. Suitable for all ages and available countrywide, RRP €19.00 400ml.

Vintage fair

The Vintage Fashion and Décor Fair is happening this Sunday in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire. It’s a great event for a wander, combining fashion, furniture, memorabilia and beauty. Attendees are as enthusiastic about vintage dress as stallholders and it’s a pleasure just to stroll and have a gawk at victory rolls, corsetry and skirts as far as the eye can see. More than 50 dealers in vintage style and décor will be there and it’s the kind of event where everyone leaves with a little gem. Doors open at 11.30am and close at 6.30pm. Admission is €7. ecades of real fur abstinence paved the way in recent years for a resurgence in its

popularity. Vintage fur coats, previously confined to the recesses of our grandmothers’ closets, were suddenly being dusted off as a younger generation realised just how warm fur is. Last year saw a decline in its popularity; was it a just a milder winter, was there still an ethical dilema, or was it simply a trend issue? This season big fashion names – armani, Hermés, elie saab, chloe, Fendi, saint Laurent... the list goes on – gave us a controversialfree way to wear fur – by making it faux. From short pile bomber jackets at Marc Jacobs to multi-coloured shearling at Marni it is faux all the way for a/W14. What’s more, this season’s faux fur comes in fantastical colours you’ll never see in nature; from pastel shades and silver to bold primary multi-colours. Just browse the boutiques and you’ll find not just coats but clutches, collars, shoe detailing and hood linings too.

If you can’t (or won’t) spend thousands on a fulllength navy blue faux fur coat from Bottega Veneta or a pastel pink cropped jacket from elie saab then simply take inspiration and choose one of these high street offerings. This patchwork coat from asOs (pictured €142)

The Great Fire Andrew Buchan faces up to the devious Denton in the finale of this historical romp

3 Detectorists Becky (Rachel Stirling) and Andy bid farewell in tonight’s finale

1. The great Fire

UTV, 9pm Despite viewing figures having rather gone the way of Thomas Farriner’s Pudding Lane bakery, Tom Bradby’s historical romp has been great fun and a pyrotechnics spectacular. In tonight’s finale, Thomas and Sarah face up to the devious Denton, while Charles II mans-up when the crowds turn mutinous.

2. Beyond Magic With DMC

National Geographic, 8pm The post-Dynamo boom in televisual conjuring shows continues with the elaborately named Drummond Money Coutts, the latest egotist magician to wow Joe Public with card tricks, stunts and illusions. This new show is pretty standard fare until the finale, when DMC walks through a wall.

3. Detectorists

BBC4, 10pm Metal-detecting duo Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) meet their low-key, carefully wrought destinies tonight as the excavation begins, Larry’s dogs go walkies and, we hope, BBC4 bigwigs agree to another series of this lovely show that also features Rachel Stirling as Becky. Listen out for music from Johnny Flynn.

4. peaky Blinders

BBC2, 9pm Dong! There will be blood and a Nick Cave meets PJ Harvey soundtrack as the bell tolls for Tommy Shelby (Cork bhay Cillian Murphy, a stunning exercise in control of everything but his accent), planning a major coup at the Epsom Derby as his enemies mass against him. Unquestionably the most stylish drama of the year.

5. Angela scanlon: Full Frontal

RTÉ2, 9.30pm Angela Scanlon has taken to television like a well-groomed duck to water, and this latest series –

YOUR gUiDE TO THis EvEning’s EssEnTiAL viEWing which concludes tonight – should cement her as part of the TV landscape in this country. Tonight, she’s looking at dating apps that are based on visual attraction and nostrings interaction.

6. Ear To The ground

RTÉ1, 8.30pm

The earthy tones of Darragh McCullough, Ella McSweeney and Helen Carroll are a soothing balm after a day’s dashing around this city. Tonight, it’s off to Lambay Island to visit a wallaby farm (the meat is delicious, apparently) and then we

fly down to the Galtee Mountains to meet scientists cultivating mushrooms there. Muddy boots, here we come.

7. Life story

BBC1, 9pm Perhaps only David Attenborough’s own career can match the epic sweep of his latest wildlife series. This week, the theme is home, from supremely scraggy African hunting dogs protecting their young to chimpanzees finding refuge in the unexpected environs of the Sahara. Stunning, as usual.

8. A parting gift

RTÉ1, 10.15pm If you’ve ever scoffed at the idea of donating your body to science and research after you’re gone, have a gander at the concluding part of this two-part documentary that looks at how Trinity’s body donation scheme has helped surgeons.

9. 24 Hours in A&E

C4, 9pm Cycling in this city is hazardous at the best of times, and this week’s stories are enough to make you squeeze onto a crammed bus or Luas

instead. The staff of London’s St George’s hospital treat one man potentially paralysed in a race and another who rode into a car.

10. Today’s Film: Killer Joe Film4, 10.55pm

William Friedkin makes one of his rare forays into the mainstream with this blackly funny thriller starring born-again Matthew McConaughey as a corrupt cop/assassin embroiled in a trailer-trash family dispute. Warning; includes a scene with Gina Gershon and a chicken drumstick that may put you off your tea.

or a chap who pretty much invented lad-lit in the 1990s, Nick Hornby has recently spent a lot of time writing about women. ‘There was the film an Education, then there are forthcoming films Wild, based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, and Brooklyn, an adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s novel about a Wexford girl in 1950s New York,’ he says, counting them off. ‘Then there’s my new novel, Funny Girl, about a TV actress in the 1960s.’ He stops, a bit sheepish. ‘Because my first book was about football, some people think I’ve become a bit of a weirdo.’ Thanks to the massmarket popularity of Fever Pitch, High Fidelity and about a Boy, for a while the name Nick Hornby was synonymous with a particular type of bloke. at the height of the boozed-up, football-mad, emotionally arrested 1990s, chaps who balked at the challenge of committing to a woman for more than four weeks found easy refuge in a new social trope: the blithely unattached new lad whose most meaningful relationship was with his record collection. It’s hard to

know whether Hornby created new laddism or new laddism created him. Either way, Hornby has always felt uncomfortable with the lad-lit label. ‘I can see now that Fever Pitch and High Fidelity were the sort of books that could sink you, because they were both a case of the book and the world matching up at the right moment,’ he says, sucking furiously on an e-cigarette. ‘But the books became much more than they were ever intended to represent. I found myself a spokesman for something I never signed up to’ Fast forward a decade or two and new lad has become metrosexual dad; and Hornby has become a sensitive chronicler of the lives of young women. ‘Women’s lives are so much more moving: they nearly always have some sort of obstacle to overcome,’ he says. ‘Whereas for men, usually the only obstacle they have to overcome is themselves.’ Funny Girl isn’t just the story of a working-class actress from Blackpool, it’s a love letter to the TV cultural explosion of the

He regularly takes issue with the elitist pretensions of highbrow culture. His books are deliberately middle of the road: there to be enjoyed by everyone and he is a passionate advocate of the joys of reading. ‘Noel Gallagher said he didn’t see the point of reading because novels are made up,’ he says. ‘That sort of comment drives me a bit nuts.’ Funny Girl is also Hornby’s sunniest novel. He puts his contented disposition down to years of therapy. He is not ashamed to say he has suffered depression, or to admit periods of his life have been difficult. ‘Part of it was because when you are younger you assume every rejection is definitive,’ he says. ‘But it was also partly because of my eldest son [who has severe autism]. Dealing with that has been a hard, long road for us all.’ Today his career is flourishing and family life is easier. ‘I am much happier in my work,’ he says. ‘I have a much better sense of security in who I am and what I do.’

‘Nothing will Savea come Saturday,’ carter hints... New ZealaNd fly-half dan Carter has warned england that prolific wing Julian Savea is in ‘red hot’ form. Savea has plundered 29 tries in 30 outings for the all Blacks, but it is against the Red Rose he has been most lethal, touching down eight times in four games. The 24-year-old has been described as better than Jonah lomu by all Blacks head coach Steve Hansen and will be the world champions’ main strike weapon in Saturday’s QBe Series opener at Twickenham. ‘Julian has really grown. He’s such a huge threat and a great player to have on your side,’ Carter told Sky Sports News.

F1 title memories give Hamilton lift

‘The challenge this week is to make another step up’ perative that we improve in all facets of our play.’ Meyer said he had thought of giving uncapped Lions prop Julian redelinghuys a spot on the bench in the place of Van der Merwe, but opted for the greater experience of oosthuizen. ‘Although Julian redelinghuys was also considered, he’s still new in the team and not familiar with our patterns of play and especially the line-out calls, while coenie knows the way we play well,’ said Meyer. ‘coenie is also in great shape and we know what he can do, especially if he has to make an impact off the bench. it’s good to have him back.’ the selection of 20-year-old rookie flyhalf handre Pollard over the more precise boot of Morne Steyn suggests the Boks will look to run the ball more, as they did in defeating the All Blacks 27-25 in their last test on oct. 4. After ireland, South Africa have tour matches against England (Nov 15), italy (Nov 22) and Wales (Nov 29).

‘Huge threat’: All Blacks winger Julian Savea

‘He’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s fast, he can break tackles and he loves scoring tries. ‘He has a great strike rate against england and every time he pulls on the all Blacks jersey. He’s in pretty red hot form and is a great player to play alongside.’ Savea will collide with Semesa Rokoduguni, the serving British army soldier who is set to make his debut. ‘every player who pulls on the england jersey performs out of their skin, even more so in the early stages of their career,’ Carter said. ‘For Rokoduguni to come into an environment like this... he’s got nothing to lose

and will make the most of the opportunity.’ Carter won his 101st cap in Saturday’s 74-6 thrashing of the United States, but Hansen hinted afterwards he is unlikely to start against england. The last 12 months have seen the 32-year-old complete a sixmonth sabbatical and rehabilitate a broken leg and troublesome calf. However, his seven starts at Twickenham have left him with a clear understanding of the occasion. ‘The all Blacks love playing there and it’s never an easy match. It’s going to be a huge occasion and we’ll be up against a strong england side,’ he said.

recall with clarity the day he ‘lost’ and won his only Formula One world title. It was six years ago Hamilton was crowned world champion in Brazil. With title rival Felipe Massa in his Ferrari crossing the line 40 seconds up the road, many people in Ferrari assumed they had won. At that stage, Hamilton was running in sixth position, but required fifth or better to snatch the title away from Massa. On the last corner he passed Toyota’s Timo Glock to claim victory. Ahead of his return, he said: ‘Brazil is a very, very special place for me.’

Robshaw issues All Black rallying cry Rugby Chris Robshaw will send England into battle against New Zealand with the warning there is ‘no hiding place’ if they are to overcome the world champions. England are hoping to end a sequence of four successive defeats to the All Blacks at Twickenham on Saturday, in the process serving notice they are credible challengers for the Webb Ellis Cup next year. Robshaw was at the helm in 2012 when Richie McCaw’s New Zealand were crushed 3821 and outlined what it would take to repeat the feat. ‘There’s no hiding place. We’re not going into this game to come out second best,’ Robshaw said.

Ball’s cricket past Rugby It is not stretching the

boundaries of sporting fantasy to suggest that Wales lock Jake Ball might have played cricket for Australia. But Australia’s loss is Wales’ gain, and Ball will run out against the Wallabies on Saturday for a rugby union Test match that he admits ‘means a lot to me’. During a previous sporting life, the bearded Scarlets forward struck fear into opposition batsmen on the cricket fields of Western Australia.

EVERTON should enjoy a straightforward victory when they entertain Lille in tonight’s Europa League action at Goodison Park. The French strugglers have won only one of their last ten matches, scoring just five times in that run. The Toffees, on the other hand, have worked hard to correct the defensive woes which hindered them at the start of the season as their rearguard has been breached just once in their four last outings. RIO FERDINAND has been told he ‘should have known better’ than to become involved in a Twitter row which led to a three-match ban. The 35-yearold QPR defender was also handed a €32,000 fine by the Football Association for using the term ‘sket’, slang for a promiscuous girl or woman, in reply to a tweet suggesting Ferdinand’s team needed a new centre-half. A statement by the FA’s independent regulatory commission read: ‘With nearly 6million followers, Mr Ferdinand is clearly an experienced Twitter user and he should know better than to respond in the way that he did. Unfortunately there is no formal or direct admission and certainly no sign of remorse.’ Ferdinand has until Monday to appeal.

Get the fourth official in the stand and the decisions right with a camera. What’s happening at the moment cannot be right. It’d take five seconds, that’s all.’

Matic rescues blues as city crash again by JAMEs bOyLAN

CHELSEA were held to a 1-1 draw by a battling Maribor side after Eden Hazard saw a late penalty saved, but Manchester City suffered an even more embarrassing fate. Jose Mourinho’s men found themselves 1-0 down to a 50thminute Agim Ibraimi strike before Nemanja Matic equalised with 17 minutes left in a thrilling clash in Slovenia. And, despite Hazard’s profligacy from the spot, the Londoners remain on top of Group G and on course to qualify. Nine-man City, though, have a mountain to climb to emerge from Group E after they slumped to a 2-1 loss at home to CSKA Moscow. Fernandinho and goalscorer yaya Toure were both sent off to complete a miserable night for City and a dismal two days of European action for English clubs in general following Arsenal and Liverpool’s poor results on Tuesday.

tosh: title hangover is hurting Liverpool JoHN ToSHACK says failing to win last season’s Premier League left a ‘dark cloud’ over Liverpool. The Reds have won just six of their 16 games this term and their former striker told the BBC: ‘There’s a bit of a hangover there. They went so close after being so long without winning

that championship. I think there’s a dark cloud still hanging over Anfield.’ Boss Brendan Rodgers (pictured) was criticised for making seven changes for Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid and Toshack, who managed the Spanish giants twice, said: ‘It looked a bit of a damage limitation job.’
