strapped ucD student ‘turned to sex work’ STUDENT leaders have expressed concern after a newspaper in one of Ireland’s top universities told the story of a student who has turned to sex work because of ‘increasing living costs and college expenses’. This week’s UCD College Tribune carries the story of a student named as ‘Jenny’, who says she meets clients in hotels or apartments and charges €100 for 30 minutes, rising to €1,000 for a whole night. She tells the paper she does not consider what she does to be prostitution, but a type of business which is ‘boring’. In one of the few direct quotes, the

young woman says: ‘If I worked really hard, I could make €3,000 in a week’. The student, who is believed to be Irish and in her mid-20s, also complains that employers don’t take

‘If I worked really hard, I could make € ,000’ what she does seriously, referring to employment gaps in her CV. ‘Jenny’ wants a change to Irish law, which currently sees escorts working together in an apartment face prosecution for running a brothel,

and their partners considered pimps. Union of Students in Ireland president Laura Harmon said there are no statistics to suggest students struggling financially are entering the sex trade on a regular basis. However, she added: ‘It is worrying to even see an isolated case. It’s indicative of the financial pressures that students are facing.’ Gerardine Rowley of Ruhama, an outreach service for women involved in prostitution, said: ‘We would caution anyone who is struggling financially from entering prostitution because it is a very difficult situation to get out of.’

THEY have barely been married a month – but George and Amal Clooney are already set to renew their vows in a third lavish ceremony. The Hollywood actor, 53, and his 36year-old lawyer wife have reportedly organised a knees-up in Buckinghamshire tomorrow for friends and family. The happy couple are rumoured to have hired Danesfield House, a Grade II-listed hotel in Marlow with 63 bedrooms, where suites are available from €500. Guests expected to attend the bash include celeb pals Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who missed the first ceremony in Venice, Italy. Mrs Clooney’s parents, Baria and Ramzi Alamuddin, and other friends are also expected to attend,

with Danesfield House just a stone’s throw from the barrister’s parents’ home. The five-star hotel has been hired for the entire weekend, with the Michelin-starred kitchen said to be catering for 90 people

on Friday night. A spokesman refused to comment on whether the Clooneys had booked but admitted the venue could be hired exclusively on ‘a case-by-case basis’. It is believed the newlyweds wanted another celebration so Mrs Clooney could celebrate with British family and friends.

Library for gay writers THE Outhouse library in the LGBT community centre on Capel Street has been re-launched as one of the only gay libraries in Ireland – and plans are in motion to establish it as a dedicated venue for LGBT writers. It will give existing and debut gay authors a place to give readings and expose their work to the wider community, organisers say. Outhouse says it also wants to

build relationships with other literary centres and has already begun to collaborate with local libraries and the Irish Writers Centre. Having undergone a facelift, the library has been fitted with all new stock, a new library system and is offering free membership. It has been around for several years but this will be the first time that users will be able to join as members.

Cap on water charge may be extended THE Government has again hinted that the capping of water charges may be extended beyond the original nine-month period. Taoiseach Enda Kenny has indicated that such a decision will be made ‘in the next few weeks’. He added that consumers ‘must have absolute confidence’ in the system. Speaking in Brussels, he said: ‘This is a massive utility for the next 50 years to create investment for infrastructure, for

‘I understand the concerns of people’ high-quality drinking water and for water for business, for industry and for persons alike so we want to see that it’s fair, that it’s affordable and that people have absolute confidence in the system and we’re happy we can achieve that.’ Earlier, in the Dáil, Tánaiste Joan Burton said the timeline for Irish Water was ‘too ambitious’. She said: ‘I understand the frustrations and the concerns of people. I think that the timeline for Irish Water was certainly

by jOAnnE AHERn too ambitious because it is an undertaking as big as the ESB for our times.’ She added that she does ‘not anticipate any bonus payments or any enhancement payments or whatever other kind of management speak title is used on the payment until the company is operational.’ Meanwhile, former Environment Minister Fergus O’Dowd called for Irish Water managing director John Tierney to stand down. Speaking on RTÉ’s Today With Sean O’Rourke, he said: ‘I feel that the public would like to see a new management team in place.’ He had previously said that the company had ‘abjectly failed’ in its approach to introducing the new charges. The water charge was introduced on October 1 and at present households have until October 31 to apply for allowances. The first water bills will be issued from January 2015, with a nine-month capped charge period to allow householders to figure out their water consumption and to allow the company to install water meters.

Agencies reject claims of rent-control hazards

HOUSING agencies Threshold and Focus Ireland have rejected a claim by the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PTRB) that rent controls would only reduce housing supply and quality further. The PTRB’s Rent Stability In The Private Rented Sector report looked at the possible introduction of a range of regulatory options, including full rent control, Consumer Price Indexlinked increases and rent caps. It said rent controls ‘were not considered appropriate at this time, having regard to the dangers that this would reduce supply’.

‘Controls vital part of housing market’ It pointed out that 82 per cent of buy-to-let properties in the Dublin area are in negative equity and 29 per cent of landlords nationally intend to sell as soon as possible. Instead, it proposed Rent Certainty Leases that would last five years and stronger regulation of rent increases – linked to inflation in return to tax breaks for landlords.

by jOAnnE AHERn

Rent regulation proposals include three months’ notice of a rent increase and an obligation on landlords to justify an increase, based on the German model where three comparable properties have to be cited. It also suggested interest relief for landlords with rent supplement tenants for at least five years, and the possibility of tax relief on rents for tenants. To enforce minimum standards in rental accommodation, the PRTB recommended an NCT-type system before properties can be leased. Focus Ireland said well designed rent control is ‘a vital part of any housing market for a country to be able to provide tenants with a secure and long-term home in the private rented sector’. Bob Jordan of Threshold said it was not asking landlords to accept below market-level rents, but instead an end to ‘profiteering’. He added that the PTRB report is ‘already out of date’ and that there are currently ‘160 families living in hotels in Dublin because they have been priced out of the rented sector’.

Apple-1, mother of all PCs, fetches €714,000

IT doesn’T look much, but this simple little green circuit board began the home computer revolution. The first Apple ‘motherboard’ was built by steve Jobs and steve Wozniak in the garage of Jobs’ parents’ house in 1976. Yesterday the Apple-1 sold for a record €714,155 at auction, and it still works. With a serial number of 01-0070, it is believed to be from the first 50 of 200 manufactured.

by CHRis bRADLEy

The Apple-1 went on sale in July of that year for $666.66, a large sum in the 1970s, and buyers didn’t even get a keyboard or monitor. on Wednesday it was bought by The Henry Ford organisation for display at its museum in dearborn, Michigan. ‘The Apple-1 was not only innovative, but it is a key artifact in the

foundation of the digital revolution,’ said Henry Ford president Patricia Mooradian. In April 1977, ten months after the Apple-1 went on sale, Jobs and Wozniak slashed the price to $475. After leaving Apple in 1985 Jobs returned to the company in 1998 and oversaw the development of the iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhone and iPad. He died from cancer in october 2011 aged 56.

STRIC

I

HAVEN’T cried yet. I struggle to cry in general but I’ve certainly been a broken man on many occasions. There’s been a few Wednesdays when the realisation that I’m doing a dance on the weekend hasn’t sunk in and I’ve been close to breaking point but that’s part of the beauty of the show – everyone goes through it. I’ve learnt now that the performance side is what it’s all

about. Even if you mess up a step, if you have a smile on your face while you’re doing it, it will be hard to notice unless you’re one of the judges. I’ve also been flattered people have been commenting on the chemistry Iveta and I have on stage. I have no idea why people are so interested in my love life! I think because we’re both single and I’m the only single person on the show there’s always going to be speculation.

To be honest, I’d be slightly worried if we had no chemistry. I think, with dancing, it’s all about the acting – you have to have in your head that she’s the person of your dreams. I don’t find that an issue at all – she’s very easy in that department. Strictly has been the ultimate workout. Since I started Strictly I’ve lost quite a bit of weight. Dancing has certainly opened my eyes – I’m using muscles I’ve never used before!

FAST ONES with

Becky Hill, 20, was a contestant on The Voice series one – and has become the only star so far to have a hit with summer smash Gecko (Overdrive). She catches up with Guilty Pleasures for five rapid questions. How does it feel to be the first success story of The Voice? My No.1 was as a featured artist with Oliver Heldens. I don’t think I can really feel proud of myself until my own stuff does well. Are you still in touch with any of the coaches? When I see Jessie J around she always says hello. She’s ace. I’ve kept in touch with a lot of the other contestants too.

Are you surprised the show is still going? No. It’s a reality talent show. Of course people are going to watch it. You’re currently touring with Katy B – how has that been? I am loving it. Katy is wicked. She’s so cool. We’ve worked together on my album and we’ve been out raving before. What has been the most shocking thing you have seen during a gig? I did T In The Park with Rudimental and I looked into the crowd and pointed at a guy wearing a mankini – who started thrusting at me.

Narrow escape: A station worker grabs the passenger as she is dragged along the platform by her scarf pa

Traveller dragged 9m by scarf stuck in Tube train doors

A PASSENGER cheated death when her scarf got trapped in the doors of a departing London Tube train and she was dragged along a platform. The woman – who had been trying to board the Piccadilly line train out of Holborn station – was carried along for 9.2m before a station worker caught hold of her and she fell to the floor. The scarf was then ripped from her neck and carried into the tunnel by the train, according to a Rail Accident Investigation Branch report. ‘The passenger suffered injuries to her neck and back but the actions of the member of staff may have saved her from being more badly hurt,’ it read. The incident occurred on February 3 of this year.

He was handed a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Were you taken aback when Eats, Shoots And Leaves, your light-hearted guide to punctuation, became a hit?

The whole experience was bananas but i was happy to go along for the ride and the book dominated my life for two years. it went to number one in America before it was even published thanks to

rÁinne, watch and weep when the Central Bank brings in mortgage controls in January. That will cut supply further. The reason for the rent increases is excessive taxes and charges that have targeted residential landlords. These landlords are now only entitled to claim 75 per cent mortgage interest relief whereas a commercial landlord can claim all of it. This is unfair. Many small landlords are operating at a loss because of this. no other sector in ireland is victimised in this way. The USC has also climbed and so has PrSi for many landlords. Many landlords are now paying an effective tax rate of 54 per cent. They are also not allowed any tax allowances against a pension.

Landlords are not eligible to claim social welfare. rent controls are not permitted under the Constitution. They also would not work, firstly because they are now too late to introduce as most rent hikes have already taken place, and secondly, only massive building or supply of social housing will actually sort the accommodation crisis. Thirdly, why would the Government even consider rent controls when the tax take on residential rental income is so large? Gráinne, you can solely blame the Government and not the landlords. Not Going Out Lee Mack ends up at a christening party

The Graham Norton Show As cool as a Cumberbatch

1. gogglebox

C4, 9pm Normal service is resumed after last week’s celebrity invasion in which Miranda Hart and Tom Ellis came off as a poor man’s Steph and Dom and we found we quite liked Noel Gallagher and Kate Moss, which was unexpected. It’s more hit and miss now – anyone missing George’s mum? – but Leon laying into Tess Daly is always good value.

2. not going Out

BBC1, 9.30pm No pun or double entendre is unexploited in Lee Mack’s punchline-crazed sitcom – which is the main thrust of its cheery appeal. Tonight Lee talks his way into a christening party, which cues up an effortless flow of baby-related gags.

3. Alan Carr: Chatty Man

C4, 10pm Alan Carr wins the Friday night chatbattle tonight – he’s got Taylor Swift (who wins hands down for most promo appearances on a single visit), James Nesbitt talking about very different roles in The Missing and Babylon, and comedian Kevin Bridges, who could find himself fronting one of these capers before long.

4. The graham norton show

BBC1, 11.05pm Bandon’s finest welcomes man-ofthe-moment Benedict Cumberbatch into the studio to talk about his new Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game. He will be joined there by uber-thesp Timothy Spall and comic Miranda Hart. Just be sure to change the channel before mawkish US band Maroon 5 play them out.

5. Today’s Film: inglourious Basterds

Film4, 9pm Quentin Tarantino’s war epic was a long time brewing – the idea for the story about a twin plot to assassinate Nazi top brass pre-dated Kill Bill. When he finally got around to it he was rewarded with a box office hit and Christoph Waltz bagged an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as SS Officer Hans Landa, nicknamed ‘the Jewhunter’.

RTÉ2, 7pm The season is over, with cups and trophies now domiciled in various deserving parts of the country. That time of year then to look back and decide which stars of GAA warrant special recognition for their heroics on the field of play. Joanne Cantwell and Michael Lyster present.

7. The Works RTÉ1, 8.30pm

Say what you like about Dublin electro poppers Fight Like Apes but

you have to admire their staying power. They perform tonight in the studio. There’s also a look at the hallowed Wexford Opera Festival taking place this weekend and a review of big movie release This Is Where I leave. The Works succeeds because there is something for everyone.

8. Would i Lie To You?

BBC1, 8.30pm There’s a whiff of wildlife about tonight’s freewheeling fibfest – well, Rob Brydon does a Basil Brush impression and one of the guests is

survivalist Ray Mears, who may just have wandered into the wrong studio by mistake. Enjoyable nonsense from start to finish, with Jo Brand in her element as a spinner of shaggy dog tales.

9. Agents of sHiELD

C4, 8pm When we left at the end of season one, SHIELD had been shattered into pieces by an act of treachery – so now the work begins to patch the fighters of the good fight back together. Hayley Atwell joins as guest star while Nick Blood, last

seen on the butchery counter in Trollied, is a sarcastic action hero in a white vest. Now that’s what we call a change of pace.

10. Unreported World

C4, 7.35pm Teenage girls hanging out in shopping malls and dreaming of being scouted by model agents is a global phenomenon, even in chilly Siberia, where stick-thin types are in hot demand for the Chinese fashion market. But hotfooting it off to Shanghai catwalks is not the dream life the girls are anticipating…

TRY BRAM sTOkER FEsTivAL

Dublin celebrates the work of the Dracula creator at the Bram Stoker Festival which kicks off today and takes in screenings, readings, makeup tutorials and Vampwire, the first zip wire across the city centre. Highlights include an all-day horrorthon at the IFI; bejaysus-scaring street theatre courtesy of Galway’s Macnas; and the Shapeshifters’ Ball, a fancy-dress shindig taking place within the Gothic confines of the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham, featuring live performances from Mercury Prize nominees Young Fathers and East India Youth. And, lest that all seem too frivolous, there’ll be lectures and talks on the life and legacy of Bram Stoker throughout the festival, including a debate on the representation of madness and sexuality in the Dubliner’s novels taking place tonight in the Mansion House. Cramped inside a tank with swearing, spitting, trigger-happy soldiers, he quickly learns the perils of hesitation, as well as the cost of action. Pitt is terrific as the battle-scarred don who outwardly refuses to cut his young charge some slack but may inwardly foster a reluctant protective streak. As they travel from battlefields to towns full of trembling civilians, it’s heartbreaking to watch the innocent young man turn into a killer. ‘i won’t ask you to do anything i haven’t done myself,’ says don, with the certainty that this leaves very little. Pitt’s don is an anti-hero, a steely minded survivor whose only remaining principle may be to protect his men. And what men they are: shia LaBeouf, Michael Peña and Jon Bernthal put in equally excellent performances, with characters as layered as the action will allow. For david Ayer’s film has plenty of action: grimy, gritty and ultimately gripping. A spectacular shoot-out concludes this depiction of a horrifying world where many had given up hope, surviving however they could, clinging onto a cause more out of vengeance than patriotism.

The Book oF LiFe (U) HHHH✩

If your kids are baying for the next Boxtrolls, try this quirky 3D animation. Inspired by the Mexican Day Of The Dead, it’s the story of a fateful love triangle in 1920s Mexico between musical Manolo (Diego Luna) and his militarian friend Joaquin (Channing Tatum) competing for the heart of feisty Maria (Zoe Saldana). Their rivalry reaches its height during a bull fight, while scheming spirits from the Land of the Remembered and the Land of the Forgotten look on. The story is sweet and briskly told while the soundtrack offers comical spins on everything from Creep to Do Ya Think I’m Sexy. Supporting characters consistently amuse, from Joaquin’s swooning girlfriends to Maria’s faithful pet pig.

Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper get steamy in this Depression-era drama about newly-weds Serena and George. When George brings his bride back to his timber empire in a mountain town, it’s clear they’re well matched both in bed and in business. In between love scenes, she takes joint control of the company, much to the chagrin of his partner Buchanan (David Dencik). It’s a pleasure watching Lawrence leave the timber workers slack-jawed as she wields an axe but while her character’s aloof, mysterious manner is initially fascinating, it becomes a problem when she suffers a tragedy. Director Susanne Bier opts for a superficial approach, despite a strong cast including Rhys Ifans and Toby Jones.

GROOVE ARMADA’S TOM FINDLAY REVEALS HIS TOP SIX TRACKS Me Like You by Damiano Von Erckert feat Georgia Anne Muldrow I have this obscure song stuck on repeat at the moment, by a proper out-there bloke with a pseudonym. It’s brilliant. I Would Die 4 U by Prince If there’s one track I wish I could have written, this is it. The lyrics are heartrending, the music is super-fresh and it still sounds totally on point today. It’s a ballad on speed. I Wouldn’t Change A Thing by Coke Escovedo This is the track I’d like at my funeral. I’d tweak a few things if I had the chance to live my life again but we won’t have time to go over that. Just play this song and stick me in the bonfire. As by Stevie Wonder If I could only listen to one track for the rest of my life, this would probably be it. It’s everything in one song and it chugs like a steam train. Love Showered Me by Lewis I’ve been listening to Lewis’s album L’Amour, which is beautiful and sad. No one could be as sad as him when he wrote that record. That makes me count my blessings. Guilty by Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb Half of my library is full of guilty pleasures but there’s no great sense of shame from me. You don’t strike us as a natural dancer – how has learning the choreography been? What do you mean ‘not a natural dancer?’ I’ll have you know I can shake my behind as well as the rest of them and I do a mean hokey cokey. Fiona has taken to life on the road like a duck to water but I think that what she would say is that whether you’re in the swamp or in the bright lights, it’s who you are and what you make of yourself that really counts. We’ve all heard about the audiences in Dublin – so it’s this aspect of being away from home that makes it so exciting for all of us.

Shrek performs at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre until Nov 9

And the singing? Do you enjoy it? I love singing, and the best thing about being in the show is that I get to sing all kinds of songs, from the hilarious opening number Big Bright Beautiful World, through to more reflective numbers like Who I’d Be and, of course, I always love singing I’m A Believer and by then the whole theatre is singing along.

relationship. How has it been working with him on the show? There’s no actual hate there really – it’s more of a kind of persistent irritation. He’s relentlessly optimistic about life and as well as that he never stops talking. But even though these things can drive me mad, I couldn’t really wish for a better side-kick. Don’t tell him that I said that though.

What made you decide to take part in the show? Who else was going to play me if I didn’t do it? Accept no substitute! What’s next? Do you see yourself carving out a career in Broadway? The show began its life on Broadway and has been touring all over the USA and all over the world. My focus for the time being is on the UK and Ireland – this is going to be an almighty road trip so I’m not making any other plans for now. Favourite part of the show? Robert Hood & DJ Pierre Like long lie-ins on a Monday morning, the Network events have become a staple feature of the bank holiday weekend – and this one is no exception. Headlining this edition are two veritable titans of US electronic music. In the Detroit corner, there’s Robert Hood, the creator of minimal techno in the 1990s with benchmark releases like Minimal Nation and Nighttime World. Representing Chicago is DJ Pierre (pictured). One of the members of Phuture 303, the group’s Acid Tracks release kick-started the acid sound, which lead to the dance music explosion worldwide. The line-up also features London artist Randomer, whose wild blend of ghetto house, jungle and techno has appeared on Hemlock, Hessle and LIES.

Has it been difficult leaving your kids behind? Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We are telling the story of the period in our lives when we first met, let’s not shatter that illusion entirely! You may know what comes next, but this isn’t a

prequel – it’s the original and best Shrek story.

Svengalisghost & Marcello Catalano This weekend’s Forza Italo party features a change of musical direction, welcoming Svengalisghost – AKA Marquis Cooper – to the intimate environs of the Odessa Club. TESCO was plunged into further crisis yesterday when it revealed a £263million (€333m) black hole in its accounts, £16million (€20m) worse than previously thought. Shares plunged by seven per cent to wipe £1billion (€1.27bn) off Tesco’s value. An investigation into the accounting error is being carried out by Deloitte with law firm Freshfields, while Tesco is also co-operating with the Financial Conduct Authority. Payments due to former chief executive Philip Clarke – who left in the summer – and finance director Laurie McIlwee have been delayed pending further investigations. Eight executives remain suspended.

CONCERN has been expressed over a deal which sees Denis O’Brien’s Communicorp provide news services to UTV’s radio stations. The agreement sees Newstalk provide a national and international news, business and sports service to Limerick’s 95FM, LMFM, Cork’s 96FM, C103FM, Q102 and FM104. It would mean Newstalk would provide such services to all of the country’s 31 independent radio stations. Newstalk’s director of news, John Keogh, said the deal ‘demonstrates the collective strength of independent radio news in Ireland’. He added: ‘The total available audience of 1.7million is much greater than the 1.2million listeners Mogul: O’Brien reached by all RTÉ radio stations; proving independent radio news is the most powerful information source in the country.’ But the the National Union of Journalists called on Communications Minister Alex White ‘to intervene directly to protect employment and media diversity’ in the radio sector. Irish secretary Seamus Dooley said: ‘The move cannot be viewed in isolation from Communicorp’s massive share of the Irish media market, including effective control of Independent News and Media.’

LEinsTER vicTORy OvER sTRuggLing cAsTREs cAn TuRn sEAsOn AROunD tHE mEdiCAl bay is beginning to empty at leinster and if they can do enough to leave France with a win on sunday then matt o’Connor could well have a full deck to choose from for december’s double-header with Harlequins. Rob Kearney and mike Ross should be back in the mix for the trip to Castres with luke Fitzgerald already pencilled in to make his injury comeback. Beyond that trio, shane Jennings and dave Kearney are back training with an eye on returning to action against Edinburgh next Friday. Add into the mix the possibility of new rugby league signing Ben te’o turning out for the A team this weekend and soon leinster will have real options again. that is why it is crucial for the province to be business-like this weekend in Castres and take advantage of a team struggling for confidence. the former top 14 champions are languishing at the bottom of the French league this season with just three wins from six while they lost their Champions Cup opener to Harlequins. Castres lost some firepower over the summer with Antoine Claasen, Brice dulin and seremaia Bai all departing, while the classy Romain teulet has retired. still, there is plenty of talent left behind with Richie Gray, Remi tales and Rory Kockott – but already this week Rhys Ruddock was urging caution

30 tries conceded in

nine games. Castres have the second worst defence in the Top 14 with particular regard to flanker ibrahim diarra. ‘their back row is really strong with players like diarra, who we targeted last year, but he still managed to have a great game and really impacted on us in that area and the break-down especially,’ Ruddock explained. in addition to this, Eoin Reddan, who has played against Castres six times, knows exactly what the home crowd will expect of their team. ideally, Castres will want to use a win over leinster to keep their Champions Cup hopes alive and use it as a springboard to relaunch their domestic campaign. However, other than the four points, a win here would provide leinster with valuable breathing room. While his internationals are away in November, o’Connor can re-integrate the likes of Fitzgerald, dave Kearney, te’o and possibly Jordi murphy, while Jimmy Gopperth can continue to rekindle his form at out-half. leinster are starting to grow into the season and against a team short on confidence they must prove to themselves that their authority is not confined to the past.

The White stuff: Connacht prop Nathan White is set to be capped

ConnaCht prop nathan White will make his first Ireland start against South africa if Mike Ross does not shake off his groin injury. head coach Joe Schmidt has confirmed he will draw on new Zealand-born White’s Super Rugby experience at tighthead if Ross is sidelined for the november 8 clash. Former Chiefs and Leinster prop White will become Ireland’s fourth oldest debutant of all time at 33 years and 51 days if he faces the Springboks at the aviva Stadium. new Zealander Schmidt has promoted White with Marty Moore sidelined after shoulder surgery – and warned of three huge scrummaging challenges ahead next month. ‘nathan White is very experienced. he’s played a lot of Super Rugby. he’s 33, so he’s no spring chicken but his experience is one of the reasons why we have picked him,’ Schmidt said. ‘If (Ross is) able to play then great; if he’s unavailable for South africa I think we’ve got a bit of experience in nathan and we’ve got Rodney (ah You) who has picked up his form and Steven archer who is returning to form. ‘Probably uppermost for nathan was how he went against Jack McGrath and Cian healy in the derby game against Leinster.’ South africa ooze scrum power with the likes of tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira merely the start. Locks Bakkies Botha, Eben Etzebeth and Victor Matfield offer near unrivalled ballast. Ireland’s third autumn opponents australia may not boast the same set-piece pedigree, but Schmidt warned Georgia cannot be overlooked. Clermont cornerstone Davit Zirakashvili leads the cast, as adept in the wide channels as the dark corners. Stade Francais prop Davit Kubriashvili and toulon flanker Mamuka Gorgodze underline Georgia’s mammoth pack, leaving Schmidt wary of the fast-improving Lelos. ‘We’re not just talking about the highly ranked teams. Georgia have got a prop factory,’ Schmidt said. ‘We need to be as solid in that department of the game as we possibly can be.

spORT DigEsT Williams back to winning ways FAI Ford Cup final TEnnis Serena Williams bounced back from her embarrassing loss to Simona Halep by beating Eugenie Bouchard 6-1, 6-1 at the WTA Finals. The world No.1 suffered her worst defeat for 16 years in Singapore on Wednesday, winning just two games. It left the defending champion (pictured) relying on other results to reach the semi-

finals. However, Williams, boosted her chances by beating Bouchard, who is out, in a result that saw Halep qualify for the last four. ‘My coach told me I needed to focus on today and that I was still in the tournament,’ Williams said. ‘I actually felt like I was out, so it was good advice.’ In the white group, Caroline Wozniacki saw off Agnieszka Radwanska 7-5, 6-3.

Nathan White set for first Irish cap against South Africa

Why always him? Rodgers: Mario’s not our only problem – but he may not be good enough

Penny for your thoughts? Balotelli looks quizzically at a training mannequin yesterday

by gAvin bROWn Brendan rodgers last night admitted Liverpool’s problems run deeper than Mario Balotelli, but conceded the misfiring striker may not be good enough for the reds. Balotelli again made the headlines for the wrong reasons on Wednesday, lasting just 45 minutes of the Champions League defeat to real Madrid and attracting criticism for swapping shirts with Pepe at half-time. But rodgers became exasperated with the focus on the Italian yesterday – asking ‘Is this the Mario Balotelli press conference?’ – and preferred to highlight Liverpool’s defensive shortcomings this season. ‘as a team we need to be better. We need to be more competitive and aggressive,’ he said. ‘That was a disappointment from the real game. a large number of the goals we conceded have been soft.’ rodgers defended Balotelli’s perceived lack of workrate, but refused to guarantee the striker had a long-term future at anfield. ‘as long as he is doing his best that is all I can ask as a coach: whether that best is going to be good enough that remains to be seen – but that is the same for every player, not just Mario,’ the northern Irishman added.

oriel park roar can lift Dundalk to promised land: cherrie DunDalk goalkeeper Peter Cherrie will draw inspiration from club legend Tom Mcnulty at Oriel Park tonight as the league of Ireland season goes right down to the wire. Visitors Cork City bring a one-point lead at the top of the Premier Division table into this final game – meaning secondplaced Dundalk, who had led for two-thirds of the season, must win to clinch a 10th championship. ‘I’ve met him a few times, a nice man,’ said fellow Scot Cherrie of Mcnulty who scored the only goal of the game at Turner’s Cross when Dundalk beat Cork City to the title on the last day of the 1990/91 season. ‘He’s told me what it’s like to

win a league with Dundalk, so hopefully I can join him,’ added Cherrie. keeping a clean sheet will be sufficient to see Cork take the glory tonight. But Cherrie’s task will be keeping his goal intact and hope that his team-mates

‘Cork City are just a big physical team’ do their stuff at the other end of the pitch. ‘Cork are just a big physical team, I’ve been impressed with them to be honest,’ said Cherrie. ‘Most of the times we’ve played them, it’s just route one football and you look at us, we’re a footballing team.

But you can’t fault them, they’ve got the results.’ Having lost 4-0 at Oriel Park back in May, Cork have trained on an artificial surface this week to assist in their preparations in the hope of avoiding a repeat. But Cherrie unashamedly wants Dundalk’s much maligned plastic pitch to be their ally. and for their vociferous fans to be their twelfth man. ‘It definitely gives us a lot of confidence,’ said Cherrie of the fact Dundalk have not lost at home in the league this season. They know we’ve not been beaten at home so it’s going to be a tough one for them, and the crowd are going to play a massive part. They could be a matchwinner to be honest.’
