WEEK 1: WHAT TO WATCH
GETTY IMAGES
Christmas morning, the last day of school and the premiere of the new Selena Gomez movie are all great moments in life. But nothing can top Sunday.
After eight months of waiting, we’ll finally have a full slate of NFL action to feast on. Don’t just be a couch potato, though. We have some serious evaluations to make.
Chief split The Chiefs released their Week 1 depth chart Wednesday. Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis were listed as co-starters. It’s another sign that the Chiefs are planning on a relatively even split, with Hillis getting most of the red-zone work. He has standalone RB2 value.
Target monsters We can learn a lot simply by examining the first read on pass plays. For example, Matt Ryan threw 22 passes to Julio Jones in the preseason and just 12 to Roddy White. Will that continue? Will Aaron Rodgers start shading more toward Jordy Nelson over Greg Jennings? Targets say a lot, even in a small sample size.

NFL Injuries
1
CJ: Whatever, K?
Chris Johnson blamed last year’s disaster on his monthlong holdout. The truth is that he was also dogging it at points and never really got in shape. Owners should be scrutinizing his effort level and burst in Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
2
Rookie arms An unprecedented five rookie quarterbacks will start in Week 1. It usually means a hands-off approach in fantasy, but there’s some upside to be found here. Andrew Luck looked NFL-ready in the preseason, throwing for 514 yards and three touchdowns while completing 62.5 percent of his passes. Robert Griffin III has even more potential thanks to his scrambling and bootleg ability. Russell Wilson is squarely on the QB2 radar after earning the starting gig in Seattle.
Austin Collie WR, Colts Collie (concussions) is practicing in full and expected to start Sunday. He’ll be an every-down wideout.
Chris Johnson’s eort level is key to a bounce-back campaign.
Ronnie Brown RB, Chargers Norv Turner loves to ride feature backs hard. While Mathews is out, Brown will be the man.
Medical Research
Robert Turbin RB, Seahawks Marshawn Lynch’s back woes are starting to border on chronic. Turbin is a talented and powerful backup.
3
Rashard Mendenhall, RB, PIT — Mendy is well ahead of schedule in his ACL rehab. He could end up as the starter by Week 2 or 3, making him well worth a roster stash. Ryan Mathews, RB, SD — The Chargers will probably hold Mathews out of Week 1, but they’ll unleash him as an everydown workhorse shortly. He has top-5 upside. Adrian Peterson, RB, MIN — If Peterson does suit up this week, he’ll have an extremely small role. Expect something around 20 touches Sunday for backup Toby Gerhart.
