EVENING RECEPTIONS

An Evening with the Director President’s Circle, Patron Circle, Patron MON JUNE 22, 6–8PM

Welcome to This Season at the Met Every summer you can count on the Met for a range of eye-opening vistas, and this summer two special exhibitions presenting the works of American artists John Singer Sargent and George Caleb Bingham are especially refreshing. Their vibrant canvases depict distinctive personalities intriguingly captured (Sargent) and 19th-century river life (Bingham). A favorite summer spot for both art and nature lovers, our dramatic rooftop garden is an openair gallery featuring a captivating contemporary art installation along with an exceptional view. The celebration of art and fashion presented by The Costume Institute—this season in collaboration with the Department of Asian Art—offers a wondrous look at how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. A newer tradition, MetFridays, is catching on fast—come any Friday evening for music, art, conversation, and more. Do join us for these and all our offerings this summer. I hope to see you soon.

One of the foremost American genre painters of the 19th century, George Caleb Bingham is best known for his compelling depictions of frontier life along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. This major Bingham exhibition — the first in more than 25 years — brings together for the first time 16 of his iconic river paintings, an extraordinary series that helped establish an indelible image of the West for the nation. Masterful preparatory drawings by the artist provide an unprecedented look at his artistic process. #MetBingham Made possible by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation. Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends Throughout his career, the celebrated American painter John Singer Sargent made portraits of artists, writers, actors, and musicians, many of whom were his close friends. Because these works were rarely commissioned, he was free to create images that were more radical than those he created for paying clients, resulting in a group of distinctive experimental paintings and drawings. The exhibition brings together about 90 of these portraits and also explores in depth the friendships between Sargent and those who posed for him as well as the significance of these relationships to his life and art. #MetSargent

China: Through the Looking Glass From the earliest period of European contact with China in the 16th century, the West has been fascinated with enigmatic objects from the East, providing inspiration for fashion designers from Paul Poiret to Yves Saint Laurent. This spring’s Costume Institute exhibition — a collaboration with the Department of Asian Art, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year — explores how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. High fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, as well as films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery. Van Gogh: Irises and Roses On the eve of his departure from the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) painted exuberant bouquets of spring flowers: two of irises, two of roses, in contrasting formats and color schemes. Conceived as a tight-knit series, like the Sunflower decoration he made earlier in Arles, this quartet of still lifes is being reunited for the first time in a unique presentation, opening when the flowers are in bloom, 125 years to the week that Van Gogh announced he was working on these “large bouquets” in May 1890. #MetVanGogh Made possible by the Janice H. Sultans of Deccan India, 1500 – 1700: Opulence and Fantasy India’s Deccan plateau was home to a series of highly cultured Muslim kingdoms in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its courtly art is celebrated for many qualities that give it an unmistakable character: in painting a poetic lyricism; in architecture a somber grandeur of scale and proportion; and in the decorative arts lively creations in metalwork and a distinguished textile tradition. This exhibition unites some 165 of the finest works in various media from the Deccan, making it the most comprehensive show thus far on this major subject. #DeccanSultans Made possible by the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund, the Placido Arango Fund, the E. The Roof Garden Commission: Pierre Huyghe This spring and summer Pierre Huyghe (born 1962, Paris) installs the third in a new series of site-specific commissions for the Museum’s Roof Garden. Huyghe has spent the past 25 years creating immersive, ritualistic, and often playful artistic encounters comprised of such diverse media as film, photography, drawing, puppetry, music, plants, animals, and insects. His complex installations address issues of time, history, borders, and intersections. Throughout his multidisciplinary practice, Huyghe reveals the poetic and disquieting continuum that binds civilization to the natural world. A related installation, Pierre Huyghe Human Mask, is on view through August 9 in Gallery 916, Modern and Contemporary Art. #MetRoof Supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Discovering Japanese Art: American Collectors and the Met This exhibition — part of the celebration of the 2015 centennial of the Department of Asian Art — tells the story of how the Met has built its comprehensive collection of Japanese art since the early 1880s, when the Museum owned just a small, eclectic array of Japanese decorative arts. Highlighting masterworks from ancient to modern times, it explores the trends that shaped art collecting and the reception of Japanese art in America. It also sheds light on key American collectors and curators who helped the Museum build its now world-renowned collection of Japanese art. #DiscoveringJapaneseArt #AsianArt100 Made possible by The Miriam and Ira D. The Artist Project Since its founding in 1870, the Met has been a place where artists come to gain inspiration from works of art from their own time and place, and also from across time and cultures. The Artist Project is an online video series that gives today’s artists an opportunity to respond to the Met’s encyclopedic collection. Through March 2016, you can hear from 100 artists—local, national, and global—about the individual works of art or galleries that spark their imaginations. Their unique and passionate ways of seeing and experiencing art encourage all Museum visitors to look in a personal way. Start watching at metmuseum.org/artistproject.

Members of Curatorial Friends Groups enjoy unique opportunities to learn about the Museum and its collections, through access to special behind-the-scenes programs, while building relationships with curators and others who share similar interests. Friends Groups also represent an important source of support for new acquisitions and programming within each department. Annual dues range from $1,000 to $15,000, a portion of which is tax-deductible. For more information, please call 212-6502075 or visit www.metmuseum.org/ curatorialfriendsgroups.

Providing for the Museum’s Future One way to make a planned gift to the Museum is to name the Met as the beneficiary of a retirement plan or savings account. Changing the beneficiary designation on an IRA or 401(k) is as simple as calling for the Met’s tax identification number, then completing a form from your retirement plan providers. For more information, contact the Planned Giving Program at 212-570-3796 or planned.giving@metmuseum.org.
