4• making the extraordinary ordinary ronald mcdonald house charities in omaha At Ronald McDonald House Charities in Omaha, we focus on keeping things as ordinary, unperturbed and boring as possible. Why? Because the families we serve are folks facing unfamiliar situations—kids diagnosed with medical issues that are sometimes rare, sometimes chronic and sometimes both. And they’re often hundreds of miles from their home. RMHC is so much more than a House; consider us the made-to-order, one-of-a-kind, double Home with everything.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alexander Payne is not only a native son, he also filmed scenes for five of his movies in and around Omaha: Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt and most recently Downsizing. Nebraska was shot elsewhere in the state, but like his other area shoots it provided rare and welcome movie work to local professionals from audio engineers to stylists.

The Gerald R. Ford Birthsite and Gardens marks the location of the house near Hanscom Park where the former president—born Leslie Lynch King Jr.—lived for few weeks after his 1913 birth. The Victorian mansion owned by Ford’s paternal grandparents was razed after a 1971 fire. Dedicated in 1977, the site now includes a portico, pagoda, rose garden, and the Gerald R. Ford Conservation Center.

Oscar winners Marlon Brando and Henry Fonda both had ties to Omaha—and to each other’s families. Brando was born here in 1924 and Fonda’s family moved to Omaha in 1906. Dorothy Brando acted in early Omaha Community Playhouse productions when her son was still an infant and encouraged a young Henry Fonda to audition for his first play during the 1925-26 Playhouse season.

Omaha’s own Reuben Kulakofsky was the inventor of the sandwich. The story goes that a regular poker game at the Blackstone Hotel included grocer Kulakofsky and the hotel’s owner, who eventually put Kulakofsky’s delicious sandwich on the Blackstone menu. A former employee of the hotel won a national recipe contest with the Reuben in 1956, and the sandwich has been nationally popular since.

Offutt Air Force Base served as the headquarters for the former Strategic Air Command (SAC) for more than 40 years, from 1948 to 1992. Operations moved in 1957 to an underground bunker with 24-inch-thick walls and base floor, 10-inch-thick intermediate floors, and roof that ranged in thickness from 24 to 42 inches. It also contained a war room with the capacity to fully sustain up to 800 people underground for two weeks. 41

Memorial Park, which covers 67 acres near 60th Street and Underwood Avenue north of the UNO campus, was created as a memorial to honor servicemen and servicewomen from the area. President Harry S. Truman dedicated the site in 1948. Today the park is also known for its rosebushes, flag-lined drive, winter sledding, casual warm-weather recreation activities, and annual summer concert and fireworks show.

Johnny Carson, host of The Tonight Show, began his broadcasting career in 1950 as a host and announcer for WOW radio and television in Omaha. It was an Omaha woman who introduced Carson to an executive in the southern California television market who also happened to be her brother. That connection led to Carson’s departure for Los Angeles, and the rest is television history.

The George and Sarah Joslyn mansion is officially named Lynhurst, but locals know it as Joslyn Castle because of its distinctive architecture. Located at 39th and Davenport Streets, the structure was built in 1903 to reflect the couple’s affluence. The Castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designated an Omaha landmark in 1979.

Since 1950, Omaha has played host to the College World Series, the culmination of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship series. For the first 60 years, games took place at Rosenblatt Stadium. The authentically restored home of General George Crook, now on the National Register of Historic Places, features furnishings and decor from the 1880s.

120-plus miles of fully paved trails run throughout the city. They include the Riverfront and Missouri River Trails along the river, the Keystone Trail intersecting some of the busiest areas of the city (and going under the road in some places), and the West Papio North and South trails touching adjoining cities and a nice cross-section of the community: residential areas, public parks, and commercial developments.

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge crosses the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs. The curved bridge opened in 2008, and its path spans 3,000 feet with Big Muddy only 60 feet below. A line marks the division between Nebraska and Iowa so visitors can stand with one foot in each state.

Saint Cecilia Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Omaha. The masterwork of architect Thomas Rogers Kimball was the tenth largest cathedral in the U.S. upon its 1959 construction and its location on one of the highest points of the city (at 40th and Webster) make its twin towers visible for miles.

It’s evident from the point of entrance—and from the street, really—that there’s nothing quite like Do Space anywhere else in Omaha or anywhere, period. Do Space is a community tech library and an innovation space for the public developed to be a technology equalizer, enabler, educator and innovator, and membership is open to all.

USS Omaha was officially commissioned in San Diego in February. The Omaha (LCS12) is the Navy’s newest littoral combat ship, a 420-foot, 2,300-ton vessel with operational flexibility and advanced technology that give it a distinctive, futuristic look. The crew will be connected to Omaha and its citizens year-round through ship’s sponsor Susie Buffett, whose role includes advocating for the vessel’s continued service and well-being.

USS Hazard was an Admirable-class minesweeper that served in the Navy during World War II. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark, the only Admirable-class minesweeper still in existence. The USS Marlin was a T-1-class training submarine for the U.S. Navy. Hazard and Marlin now serve as museum ships and are on display at Freedom Park. 43
