fall 2014 During the summer of 2014, hundreds of thousands of acres burned or were destroyed in the Methow Valley and throughout Okanogan County as a result of wildfire, leaving more than 300 families without homes, including many students served by Methow Arts’ Okanogan Region Arts Education Partnership. This partnership provides arts education to over 5200 students in seven school districts. Numerous evacuations of neighborhoods created frightening and stressful experiences for other students. Methow Arts would like to recognize the valuable role that the arts can play in the healing process. It is our goal Amanda Jackson Mott this year, through art experiences, to help in the healing process for these students. Now Executive Director Methow Arts Alliance more than ever, students in the Okanogan Region Arts Education Partnership—most of whom already lack art teachers at the elementary school level—need access to the highquality arts education provided by Methow Arts through grants and donations. We need your help. If you would like to sponsor increased and enhanced arts education opportunities for students in the school districts affected by the Carlton Complex Wildfire and other fires, please contact me at Methow Arts. BOOK-IT THEATRE’S “LA MARIPOSA” Bilingual theatre comes to Okanogan County in the form of Book-It Repertory Theatre’s “La Mariposa,” which will be performed at ten area schools at the end of September. With narrative text spoken as dialogue by the characters, the original adaptation of Francisco Jimenez’s autobiographical story will be performed in both Spanish and English by Book-It’s touring company actors. The plotline revolves around Francisco, who is the son of Mexican migrant farmers. When Francisco starts first grade at a new school in his new home –the United States—he longs to be a part of the world around him, but struggles with an unfamiliar language and making new friends. He finds comfort in the slow-moving caterpillar that lives in a jar by his desk. Francisco knows the caterpillar will become a butterfly, but how? Gradually, the metamorphosis takes place, and the caterpillar and Francisco are beautifully transformed. For many students in the fire-ravaged school districts in Okanogan County, the story’s message about the challenges of new beginnings will have a special resonance, as families and communities begin the process of recovering from and rebuilding after the Carlton Complex Wildfire and other wildfires. Book-It Repertory Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming great literature into great theatre through simple and sensitive production and to inspiring its audiences to read. Methow Arts and Book-It Theatre are collaborating to provide this tour through a generous gift from Paul G. Allen and Jo Lynn Allen in honor of their mother, Faye G. ART EXPLOSION: PATEROS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CREATE MURAL By Ashley Lodato, Arts Education Director – Methow Arts Pateros School art teacher Todd Steenhard has a glass display case outside his classroom where he features student art, but he had a vision for something even more vibrant—a mural on the white walls surrounding the case. Through Methow Arts’ Artist-in-Residence program, Steenhard connected with Riverside artist Jody Olson, who is known for her mural work around the Okanogan region. Together, Steenhard and Olson coached high school students through the process of designing and painting an interior wall mural in acrylic/latex paint. Consisting of images of oversize art materials, the mural explodes off the wall (hence the inspiration for the name “Art Explosion”). In the process of creating the mural students learned techniques for enlarging and foreshortening, mixing colors, and a fresco technique called “pouncing,” which is a process of transferring a design from pricked paper to a wall. The cartoon-style mural pops with colors, drawing the gaze of passersby to the display case at the heart of the mural. Orange pigment pours from a giant paint can next to a 10’ long paint brush and a pencil nearly as big as a student; nearby are ceilingheight scissors. Juxtaposed with the finished art pieces it surrounds, the mural was created using the materials it represents. “Art Explosion” is located outside the art room at the Pateros School. This residency was created by Methow Arts Alliance with funding/sponsorship from Webster Furniture, the Pateros PTO, the Pateros School District, the Community Foundation of North Central WA, the National Endowment for the Arts, and ArtsWA. When thinking about a subject for a new documentary film, Pete Vogt looks for people he sees as “rebels and button-pushers.” While he is particularly interested in stories about music, sports, and the environment, it is a more-elusive quality—what Vogt calls “where the rational meets the irrational in everyday life”—that really pulls him in.
Even given irresistible characters and an interesting topic, “what you really want is somebody who wants to tell their story,” said Vogt. “But if they don’t want to—then they may be sitting on something that will shed an entirely different light on the subject.” Vogt first strayed into the world of film several decades ago via a graduate program in critical writing. “I was interested in understanding film from a critical viewpoint, in getting under the skin of why, while there were many good films, there were so few great films being made at that time—or, really, ever,” he said. As part of the program, he was assigned to make his own film. “I never really found out why great films are hard to find—except, as
I discovered, films are really hard to make. There are a lot of moving parts,” he said. Vogt acknowledges that he has high standards. “I’m hard on films—I want people to rise to the expectations of what the craft and art should be.” After years of making documentaries and short fiction films, Vogt has refined his expectations. “I once thought it was important to change the world, to have that in the back of your mind,” he said. “Although I still want that, I accept that raw entertainment is O.K.” He considers a moment. “A filmmaker’s duty is to love the world in a particular way, and to evoke and amplify the part of the world they love through their craft. It’s an impetus to correct something wrong—‘I love the world so much that I’m going to be a voice to change it.’”
The watershed moment in his career came when he and his friend Doug Pray, a filmmaker based in Los Angeles, collaborated on Hype, which chronicled the grunge scene in Seattle. “It was a large and important-enough topic that it got attention,” said Vogt. The film got great reviews and played at major film festivals. Although they finally sold Hype to a distributor, that success came with a harsh dose of reality. “It just really hurts to put that much work into it and to make something pretty damn great, and the distributor makes money—and you get zero,” said Vogt. He was so disillusioned by the experience that he decided to become a farmer. For more than a decade, Vogt grew chilies,
Vogt’s first films in graduate school were highly experimental. “The filmmakers there came out of the art world—painters, poets, musicians. They didn’t feel bound by narrative structure,” he said. “It was kind of liberating, and a lot of fun.” Even within this narrative freedom, Vogt was captivated by the way filmmaking enabled him to tell the stories he thought were vital. “I made crummy documentaries, with poor production values,” he said. “But they had heart.” After school, he took filmmaking fairly casually, making “Hollywood-ish, indy films and down-home documentaries” while working other jobs.

Vogt started making shorter, “slightly eccentric” documentaries and found it felt fun again. His films started to get exposure on public television. The series Icons Among Us: Jazz in the Present Tense, which Vogt co-directed, looks at the evolution of contemporary jazz through an understanding of the musicians and their music, and was particularly well received.
“We were off and running before knowing exactly where it was going to go, except being the story of his life,” said Vogt. Soon the story became much more complex, providing a window into the culture and politics of baseball. “The film started out to be a lark, then became a large story about what happens when people speak their minds in a corporate structure,” he said.

Vogt is currently finishing up another sports documentary called The Play, which chronicles “four seconds of football that defy the imagination,” a notorious series of maneuvers in a 1982 match-up between the University of California and Stanford that clinched the game for California in a chaotic—and still controversial—string of events that even included the Stanford marching band. But Vogt’s attraction to sports isn’t just about the memorable plays or colorful players. “I’m interested in our deep memory of sports,” he said. “Why do people remember and cherish sports so deeply—more than art, for example?”
Vogt has recently been helping other filmmakers learn to tell the stories they find compelling through an intensive documentary filmmaking workshop in Twisp called Wild Mind Film Camp, which he co-directs with Pray. Participants—who come from around the country—make short films about everything from Methow Valley history to
environmental issues to more-personal topics. The films are screened for the public at the culmination of the workshop. Running the workshop, like making movies, is completely consuming. “It takes such chunks out of your life that you always think you’ll never make another,” said Vogt. In the end, he is lured back by his passion for storytelling. “People need good stories. I’m going to tell the stories nobody else is going to tell, and tell them in a way that nobody else will.” he said.

Returning the Bones Written and Performed by Gin Hammond The Merc’s continues its Solo Performer Series with this presentation of Gin Hammond’s Returning the Bones. Based on Gin own family’s true story, she plays 28 characters with multiple dialects as she explores subjects of race, family and dreams. In 1948 in a small southern town, a young African-American medical student is faced with the question of continuing the fight for Civil Rights or escaping to Paris to live the life she’s always dreamed. At times both funny and poignant, Gin takes us on a journey of many miles, perspectives and epiphanies.

Run by Keyser and her partner Laura Karcher, the Gallery is both a brick and mortar showcase and online sales gallery featuring local art and craft. The Big Sleep: Conversations on Finality The Confluence Gallery has asked artists to determine and interpret their own feelings about the nature of death. From honoring the life that was lived or the body that is left behind, to exploring the entity that carries on, to even contemplating the “death” of concepts or ideas (i.e. the death of innocence, civilizations, ideologies, etc.). By presenting a small number of different interpretations and bringing the subject of death out into the open, curators Joanne Marracci and Vern White hope to give others permission to explore their own very personal, complex and contradictory attitudes towards death. Murder by The Book By Duncan Greenwood and Robert King Directed by Jane Pappidas Crisp, witty exchanges pepper this light hearted and inventive thriller that unfolds with a series of macabre twists. A thriller writer indulges in vitriolic word duels with his estranged wife until she shoots him. An amateur detective from next door attempts to solve the murder before calling the police. Micro-Manufacturing Launches A new outdoor gear manufacturer, eqpd, is making creative, stylish wares in the company’s TwispWorks shop space—and doing it with a Methow flare. Eqpd (pronounced “equipped”) founder and chief designer Jonathan Baker has a 20-year history in the outdoor industry, designing everything from helmets to backpacks. Baker has launched his own venture with an initial run of tough, versatile tote bags, along with elbow/knee pads good for everything from mountain biking to gardening.

Holiday Gift Show
Eqpd has already hired two employees and is establishing partnerships across the Valley. Natural dyes artist Sara Ashford and Baker have collaborated to create a special, “Methow Color,” a vibrant yellow hue made from locally sourced rabbit brush and other natural ingredients. Beginning in August, eqpd will host a monthly free "First Thursday: Fix Your Gear Night" at its studio in the Gray Shed at TwispWorks. Anyone can use eqpd’s sewing gear and advice to sew, patch or repair sleeping bags, jackets, tents and more.

11 WAYS THE ARTS HELP HEAL The wildfires of 2014 burned hundreds of thousands of acres leaving more than 300 families without homes, including many students served by Methow Arts’ Okanogan Region Arts Education Partnership. These programs provide vital arts education to over 5200 students in seven school districts. Numerous evacuations of neighborhoods created frightening and stressful experiences for other students. Methow Arts Alliance would like to recognize the valuable role that the arts can play in the healing process.
1. The arts show you that life can be more or better than before. 2. The arts change a person’s physiology and attitude 3.
from one of stress to relaxation. The arts are familiar so they inspire feelings of security rather than fear.
4. The arts help externalize internal burdens. 5. Through visual arts, people can express experiences that are too hard to express with words.
6. Listening to and playing music calms neural activity in the brain and lowers blood pressure, leading to stress reduction.
7. Like meditation, engagement in the arts leads to reduction of stress and a clearer mind.
8. Poetry and expressive writing provide access to the unconscious self and a means of processing feelings.
