UPILS from West Kirby Grammar School performed Carols by Candlelight at St Andrew’s Church.

The Handbells and Chamber Choir came together to play some of the sea-

son’s festive favourites for families in West Kirby in an evening concert. It had been a busy week for the school’s musicians who also performed a Christmas concert in the school hall for fellow pupils, friends and family.

Students return for presentation evening TOP students returned to Birkenhead for a Christmas reunion and presentation evening. Birkenhead Sixth Form College proudly welcomed the Class of 2008 after Summer exam results demonstrated another successful year. A total of 28 A-level subjects, including all Applied Double Awards, had a 100% pass rate and most students progressed to their first choice of university course or employment. Best All Round Student award went to Jamie Pinto, who left primary school at the age of six and didn’t resume formal education until he was 16. Jamie is now study-

ing theology and religious studies at the University of Cambridge. Anna Baldwin took the Unilever Award for geography and archaeology and an award for individual achievement went to Dean Garrity. Nicola Hobden was awarded the prize for mathematics while cornet player and former member of the college orchestra Doug Elkin received the prize for music. Doug is now studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. Politics and philosophy student Grace Everest won the Brian Field Memorial Award and Josh Elliott was named as 2008’s top science student.

Soccer skills scheme PARK High School Specialist Sports College and Everton Football Club hosted a sponsored skills morning for students in Year Seven. It involved students working with professional coaches from the club to develop their football skills. The pupils were encouraged to raise sponsorship money to go towards projects including referee qualifications, foot-

ball leaders’ qualifications, the mini kickers’ football programme and new school equipment for Park High and its cluster of primary schools. Ian Gauntlett, the school’s sport development officer, said: “It was a great success. Students raised a lot of money while having the opportunity to work with professional coaches to develop their skills.”
