taekwondo instructor, Richard Saunders. Richard, who is a 5th Dan, said “It’s going to be a great achievement if Nathan passes and the TAGB are checking to see if he will be their youngest-ever black belt.” For his black belt, Nathan will have to perform set forms, or patterns, which consist of more than 97 various techniques. He will also have to do free-sparring and self-defence along with a verbal exam. ● Anyone wishing to know more about taekwondo or a club near you can contact Richard on 512 6521.

RUGBY ● ROUND-UP OF ALL THE WEEKEND’S ACTION FROM ACROSS WIRRAL

Caldy fight for victory against Preston

● From Page 84 a five-metre scrum and converted his own try. Caldy responded immediately when a period of intense forward pressure resulted in Lyon scoring under the posts, Gavin Roberts converting. The Wirral team started to dominate and as Preston

were forced to infringe, they went further ahead through three Roberts’ penalties, on 55, 60 and 65 minutes. Grasshoppers were not finished and Russell Flynn scored an opportunist try on 73 minutes, which was not converted. Caldy director of rugby Tony Atherton said: “This

was a fantastic win in very difficult conditions but the team really worked hard and deserved the points.” Man-of-the-match was flanker Jake Lyon, who put in a tremendous display . He was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch. Next week, Caldy travel to Huddersfield in the league.

Rain causes fixture pile up FOOTBALL IN THE Wallasey and District League, the weather took centre stage yet again and all scheduled fixtures were postponed. Meanwhile, the Wirral FA Amateur and Junior Cup ties will now take place on November 2, as will the Premier Cup tie between Big House and Dock FC with their third round tie taking place the week later. The Wirral FA Youth Cup ties will now take place on November 9.

Park were made to work very hard by the previously unbeaten Yorkshire outfit and it seemed they had let success slip from their grasp late on, when poor play allowed Morley in for their second try. But Dave Hall came to the rescue with a superb 35 metres penalty in added time. Park still had to endure a further five minutes, but held on well for their third win in four outings. Hall struck an early penalty for Park, but Craig Field stole possession for Morley and raced clear from halfway for a try converted by Simon Bradshaw. In the last minute of the first period,

Njike Tchakoute forced his way over from a quickly-taken tap penalty to earn a single point interval advantage. Two Hall penalties stretched the lead but Bradshaw put over a kick for Morley on 67 minutes and it was game on again. Again, it looked like curtains for the visitors when they gifted a try to Kobi Gijast in the 75th minute but they lack nothing in spirit and determination and the trusty boot of Hall won the day. Stand-in Dave Ibbotson, Ashley Oliver and Tchakoute formed an excellent back-row for Park, although Oliver was forced off through injury in the second period. Jamie Johnstone proved an able deputy and the other subs Matt Ibbotson and Andy Trotter also played

their part in a memorable victory. Meanwhile, New Brighton took charge in the second period to win 28-14 against Blackburn in North Two West. They had to come from 14-0 down against a Blackburn side languishing at the foot of the table. Kati Tuipulotu forced his way over and then Ian Kennedy made the running to send in Gaz Simpson. The conversion by Stephen Dean made it 1412 at halfway. Simpson and prop Lotu scored secondhalf tries as New Brighton turned the game around, while a couple of penalties followed from Dean to make the game safe. Elsewhere, a very early start added to the woes of Hoylake, who were beaten 20-0 by Vagabonds.

Queens buzzing after Beehive win IN THE Houlihans Birkenhead Sunday League, the only game of the day saw Queens Park win 5-3 against FC Beehive. Park were the favourites going into the match, being top of the Premier Division table, and showed why they are there – constantly leading the way with Beehive having to play catchup. FC Beehive went down to 10 men after 10 minutes, just to add

FOOTBALL By WENDY WHITLEY to the challenge set out for them. A foul on a Queens Park player lead to a dubious penalty decision, after it was contested that the penalty occurred outside of the box. Queens were 3-2 up at half-time, but Beehive came out strong in the second half and grabbed another

equalised. But the job was too hard on this occasion, with the Beehive not being able to break the Queens down sufficiently to keep hold on to a point. Queens went on to score another two goals to seal the win and retain their place at the top of the table. Elsewhere, Shaun Lawrenson, of Castrol Athletic Youth, won a Cheshire FA Volunteer Award for his services to football this week

and was presented with his award at the Cheshire. Meanwhile, Barry Steele, the league registrations secretary is moving on October 10 and the first round of the FA Sunday Cup is on Sunday October 19. the relegation zone. Lairds goalkeeper Richard Whiteside was the hero at Frickley Athletic, dashing upfield to force in a freekick in the second minute of injury time. Both teams had difficulty battling against a fierce wind, with Lairds having the best of the early chances through Alex Hay and Mark Reed. The Yorkshire men were unlucky to see Lee Morris' drive rebound back off the post and Reed was again unlucky with a shot cleared off the line. Frickley's hearts were again in their mouths after the break when a Towler shot, seemingly heading for the roof of the net, was gusted high by the wind. Whiteside foiled Groome four minutes from time with a fingertip save but had no chance from the same man who was on hand to steer in a Steve Robinson free-kick. Lairds refused to give in and when they were awarded a free-kick just inside the home half, Whiteside raced up to get to the deep ball and wallop it past Nicklin. ● Kick-off for the Whitby game is 3pm and there is more home action for the Lairdsmen next Tuesday, when they entertain Leigh Genesis, kick-off at 7.30pm.
