Top Tips for Cleaning Your Gutters

• We are known as a leading drain unblocker company in Warrington. Drainage is our business and we are very good at it. • But drains are not the only things that can get blocked up and lead to water causing damage to your property. • We spend a lot of our time looking down, at drains beneath the ground. But sometimes it also pays to look up and make sure that your gutters are also flowing freely. • It is usually a less messy job than unblocking a drain, but never the less we have some tips to help you get the job done with the minimum of fuss.

1. Safety First • As a drain unblocker company we like to keep our feet on the ground. To clean a gutter effectively you need to work at height and that comes with some inherent risk. • You need to make sure that you use a sturdy ladder and that it is placed securely against the wall. • You should also have somebody to “foot” the ladder to prevent it slipping away from the wall and causing you to fall.

2.

Plan the job before you climb the ladder

• When we are working out how to deal with Warrington’s drainage issues we do not even open an access cover until we have considered where in the system the issue might be. • It is much the same when you are sorting out blocked gutters. Consider where the gutters are around your house, but also the fastest and safest way to position yourself. • While you can move your ladder much more easily than we can dig another hole, but if you make sure that you are not having to double back on yourself the job will be done much more quickly.

3. Wear good gloves • We are a leading drain unblocker company, so believe us when we say we fully understand the importance of wearing the right gear. • The contents of your gutters a likely to be less problematic than the contents of a blocked drain but you want to make it easy for yourself as you scoop up the debris that blocks your gutter. • You might also end up dealing with insects so it is important to make sure your skin is protected.

4. Check everything else while you are up there • When we are digging into the drains of Warrington drainage is not the only think on our minds. We pay attention to everything else we find down there in case it points to something else that warrants attention.

• You do not dig holes in the ground all that often, after all so when you do it pays to be observant. • It is no different when you climb a ladder to clear the gutters. • It gives you a view of your house and garden that you do not often get. So look at the pointing of your brickwork and the condition of your roof tiles. • You might spot something that needs dealing with but is invisible from the ground, and that can save you a great deal of trouble and expense in the long run.

5. Be careful where the muck ends up • You need to put the debris that you fish out of your gutters somewhere. If it is mostly leaves and softish matter it would be a useful addition to the compost heap. • More solid twig like material may need to go to a council garden waste facility. Whatever you do with it, do not fall into the trap of leaving it in a heap on the ground. If you do that there is a reasonable chance that a heave rain storm could wash it into the drains causing them to become blocked.
