MERRIGONG THEATRE COMPANY SEASON 2023 find home

Our company’s name ‘Merrigong’ reflects the Dharawal word for the Illawarra region’s distinctive escarpment, a landmark of supreme cultural importance. This name serves as a constant reminder that our venues rest on unceded First Nations land.

In all that we do, Merrigong Theatre Company seeks to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, seas and skies, and to show respect to all First Nations people who call our region home.

Illawarra Performing Arts Centre

is getting an upgrade!

For this exciting and much-needed work to happen, the building itself will be closed from 21 Dec 2022 to the end of May 2023. That doesn’t mean Merrigong won’t be open – the show will go on! We will be making great use of the Wollongong Town Hall, presenting a number of shows in an intimate theatre mode with raked seating. Our Box Office will also be located at Town Hall while work on the IPAC building is underway. On reopening we can look forward to vibrant, refreshed interiors, improved accessibility for all, a new air conditioning and heating system, and brand-new theatre seats. We hope you’ll enjoy our program at the Town Hall, and celebrate with us

Theatre is about connection

In the last few years, we’ve all experienced isolation – lockdowns and restrictions kept us isolated in our homes or local government areas, and then border closures kept us isolated from those interstate or overseas. It’s been a reminder of how fundamental it is to our human experience to connect beyond our own personal experience – to discover and interact with others, and in doing so to come to a greater understanding of our own selves. In a very tangible way, this is what theatre provides us – a window into the lived experience of others, through which we can learn, and empathise, and maybe most importantly, sometimes catch a glimpse of ourselves, and realise the essential unity in our human diversity.

Our 2023 Season offers just this opportunity – it’s an eclectic mix of theatrical experiences that invite you to connect with diverse voices, stories and energy. From the captivating charm of a Bangalore chai-wallah in Guru of Chai, a reluctant Chinese-Australian beauty pageant contestant in Miss Peony, a group of First Nations Elders gathered in January 1788 in The Visitors, and the neuro-diverse performers of our very own Strangeways Ensemble with their next stunningly original work, Something that Happened, we’ll be reminded that it’s not just the story that matters, but who tells it. And we’ll be exposed to an extraordinary range of styles of performance too – the heart-stopping stunts of Air Time, the incredible movement and undeniable clarity of voice of SILENCE, and the soaring gospel singing of Choir Boy. 2023 is a big year for us at Merrigong. With a major refurbishment project at IPAC, we’ll be creating a special intimate theatre with raked seating within the Wollongong Town Hall space, before inviting you back to the refreshed IPAC theatres in June. And we are excited to welcome a new voice into the direction of our program, with our colleague Leroy Parsons joining us as Producer – First Nations Program.

Our hope is that in 2023 you’ll connect with us, with the diverse range of artists on our stages, and with each other, and that together we’ll explore beyond, and find home.

Simon, Leland, Penny and Leroy L-R: Simon Hinton (Artistic Director / CEO), Leland Kean (Artistic Development Manager), Penny Watts (Program Manager) and Leroy Parsons (Producer - First Nations Program).

Guru of Chai

An outrageously funny and heartbreakingly beautiful romantic thriller. The contradictions of modern India, with its iPhones and ancient gods come alive in this outrageously funny and heartbreakingly beautiful romantic thriller from one of New Zealand’s most successful theatre companies, Indian Ink. A poor chai-wallah (tea-seller) has his life changed forever when a young girl is abandoned at a busy railway station and brings the place to a standstill with the beauty of her singing.

World-renowned actor and writer Jacob Rajan finally comes to Wollongong, bringing his famous Guru character to life – a buck-toothed chameleon, he channels 17 characters and leaps to multiple locations, delivering a serpentine romantic thriller while dispensing dubious spiritual wisdom.

Award-winning, heartstring-pulling and outrageously funny, with a vibrant musical score performed live, Guru of Chai is an innovative modern fairy tale packed with love and magic.

Choir Boy

A story about boys becoming men, and one singer finding his voice.

Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney (an Oscar®-winner for his Moonlight screenplay), this Tony Award®-winning play – threaded throughout with soul-stirring a cappella gospel hymns – is the story of a battle between identity and community.

Set in the confines of an elite boys’ school, Choir Boy focuses on Pharus Young, the leader of the school choir. A talented scholarship student, Pharus is also the target of vicious anti-gay bullying by Bobby, the nephew of the headmaster. It’s a coming-of-age drama, deeply infused with African-American culture, legacy and hope.

The Australian premiere production of this recent Broadway hit comes to Wollongong direct from its Sydney season as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023.

“...flitting through space and flirting with danger”

Air Time

created by Lee Wilson and Mirabelle Wouters

A stunning mix of precision and anarchy, as breath-taking stunts and movement unfold to a pulsating electronic music score.

In Air Time, skate ramps tower over the audience, propelling BMXers, skaters, dancers and parkourists with extreme speed and height. The chaotic street energy sizzles with danger, with the risk of bodies on foot, and bodies on wheels, colliding. The fierce commitment of the performers to reach wild heights while executing stunts with precision is breath-taking.

Branch Nebula brings the virtuosity of street culture into the theatre, with a complex and spectacular show honouring their history and knowledge of the artforms and subcultures informed by nearly two decades of experimental performance art.

This adrenaline-pumping new work is a stunning display of air-born mastery within a vista of colours, light, and shadows, that builds on Branch Nebula’s extensive work and outstanding talent.

Coil

created by Mark Rogers, Solomon Thomas, Steve Wilson-Alexander and Carly Young

Movies and memories, live on stage.

At the cutting edge of theatre and technology, re:group’s Coil endeared itself to audiences at the Sydney Opera House in 2022. Now this captivatingly clever and entertaining work is set to take Wollongong back to the glory days of video stores – before they were killed by streaming.

Beginning as a popular Wollongong-based performance collective, and now nationally recognised, re:group’s work has been nurtured through Merrigong’s artist development programs (Route Dash Niner, 2016/2017; Tom William Mitchell, 2018; UFO, 2022). In Coil they create an experience both gobsmackingly ingenious in its execution, whilst being funny, warm-hearted and deeply resonant. Coil reflects upon the joys, perils and pitfalls of nostalgia, and how we grapple with goodbyes.

Inspired by the highs and lows of pop culture and the near-to-home closure of Leading Edge video store in Thirroul, re:group mash theatre and movie-making together to create something immersive, irreverent, and inherently live.

A KARUL PROJECTS AND BLAKDANCE PRODUCTION

SILENCE

A conversation that will never be silenced.

SILENCE is a thrilling new work from acclaimed First Nations contemporary dance company, Karul Projects, based on Minjungbal Country (Northern NSW / South East Qld). Vivid movement and sound explore the space in between, the conversations not being heard, and the responses that are muted.

There’s silence between the stars as the Emu travels across the night sky. There’s silence in the dancer’s energy when they hit the cut, the rupture between rhythms and movement where the spirit world can enter. It’s also the deafening silence under white noise. The same questions echoed through generations.

Through powerful choreography from company co-founder Thomas E.S. Kelly, and dynamic live percussion from Jhindu-Pedro Lawrie, SILENCE breaks the silence, pulling unresolved conversations from under the rug and slamming them back on the table.

“...sometimes, all the miles between are as nothing, sometimes, they are narrowed to the little silence between the beats of a heart.”
Colleen McCullough, Tim
Jeanette Cronin and Ben Goss. Photo by Daniel Boud

An Australian classic becomes an uplifting new play.

Directed by the award-winning Darren Yap (Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam, Diving for Pearls, Letters to Lindy), the gripping and controversial novel that catapulted Colleen McCullough to international fame has been sensitively adapted for the stage by acclaimed playwright Tim McGarry.

An unorthodox relationship develops between Mary, a career-driven business executive in her mid-50s, and Tim, a handsome 25-year-old labourer with a mild intellectual disability. Tim has grown up in a small but loving, workingclass family who have tried to shelter him from the cruelness of the world. What begins as a chance meeting between them, soon develops into a lifechanging relationship with shattering consequences.

Tim is a new Australian play filled with love, loss and acceptance, which explores the importance of embracing differences, opening oneself to the fullness of life and the opportunities it has to offer.

Miss Peony

A 21st Century Australian comedy caught between two generations and two cultures.

Michelle Law’s fierce and funny debut play, Single Asian Female, was a nationwide smash hit. Now she focuses her razor-sharp eye on the world of beauty pageants in this coming-of-age comedy about what happens when the ghosts of generations past come back to haunt you.

Lily’s grandmother was a beauty queen in Hong Kong. She doesn’t care that times have changed, and that Lily lives in a new country and a new century. She sees that Lily’s caught between worlds and wants her to enter the Chinese community beauty pageant, the highly competitive Miss Peony. She won’t take no for an answer. And to make matters worse, she’s a ghost.

Starring a dynamic cast led by Michelle Law, Miss Peony is a lavish and loopy exploration of the journey to self-acceptance. This production is performed in three languages – as in real life, the characters switch between English, Cantonese and Mandarin. There will be surtitles in all three, so that everyone can enjoy the show!

A MERRIGONG THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE DISABILITY TRUST

Something that Happened

When the dreams that you dare to dream may just come true…

After their genre-bending hit Trash Talk , this is the latest hilarious and thought-provoking work from The Strangeways Ensemble, Merrigong’s permanent company of neuro-diverse professional actors.

An international film company is undertaking a global scouting mission to cast a new musical film version of John Steinbeck’s classic tale, Of Mice and Men, and the audition notice has found its way to The Strangeways Ensemble in Wollongong. This could be their big break, a chance to hit the big time, and for their dreams to come true!

Set in the rehearsal room, the Ensemble undertake their audition prep with individual research, self-tapes and throwbacks to the Golden Age of Hollywood. But Steinbeck’s themes of friendship, dreams and our place in the universe are put to the test when it becomes clear that this opportunity is not as hopeful as it first appears.

Inspired by the history of representation of people with disability in film, Something that Happened is a funny and imaginative exploration of the quest for fame and inclusion.

Sydney Morning Herald

The Visitors

Visitors leave. Right?

After its Sydney Theatre Award-winning premiere at the 2020 Sydney Festival, Muruwari playwright Jane Harrison’s The Visitors will be reworked for this brand-new production directed by one of Australia’s most celebrated directors, Quandamooka man Wesley Enoch.

On a sweltering day in January 1788, seven clan leaders gather on a sandstone escarpment overlooking the harbour. The attendees, six of them Elders and one new initiate, catch-up, laugh together, share a meal and compare notes. But beyond the friendly banter, protocols, and hospitality, a momentous decision is waiting to be made.

A mysterious fleet of giant nawi is amassing in the harbour, and as they creep closer, these seven representatives must choose unanimously: should they send these strangers on their way or welcome them?

The Visitors is at once a riveting, deeply researched insight into one of the most impactful and painful days in Australia’s history, and a hugely entertaining study of how communities respond to change and the unknown.

But being invisible isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…

Possum Magic takes us on a magical journey around Australia to find the food that makes Hush visible again.

Our Young People’s Program is made possible with the support of Peoplecare.

School Group Bookings

A discounted school group price of $23 per student (for groups of eight or more) is available for selected performances. For each group of eight or more students, a supervising teacher can attend for free.

Student Group Season Tickets

Even bigger savings are available for groups of eight or more students seeing multiple shows, with show prices as low as $18, per student per show.

Price per student:

3 Shows for $60

5 Shows for $90

Passport to Performance

Substantial ticket subsidies are available through our Passport to Performance program, with tickets from as little as $6 per student (for groups of eight or more). Subsidies may be available for public schools with a high FOEI score, or for school groups with additional requirements.

Young Playwrights Project

A showcase of Wollongong’s youngest playwrights and performers, run in collaboration with The Drama Studio at IPAC. Young playwrights with a 10 – 15 minute play they would love to see on stage are invited to apply. Scripts are assessed by professional practitioners, and the playwrights selected will work with a mentor to develop their play, which is performed by young actors from The Drama Studio.

The Drama Studio

The Illawarra Performing Arts Centre is home to The Drama Studio, a dynamic drama school established in 1988, and run by Fiona Gabb-Finley. The Drama Studio offers drama classes for school students from Kindergarten through to Year 12.

Work Experience

A limited number of week-long work experience placements are made available each year for students to participate in and observe the different departments in operation at Merrigong.

Community is at the centre of everything we do

Our goal is to build and sustain strong and meaningful relationships with individuals, groups and organisations across our local community, to meet our aims for inclusivity, diversity, access and opportunity. We work with a wide range of local organisations to develop specific arts-based programs and provide subsidised community rates and event support for the use of our spaces. These include:

Proud community partners since 2006, The Disability Trust’s Sport and Recreation program offers participants the opportunity to regularly work with professional theatre artists and to present their bi-annual productions in our venues. In early 2023, we will support the Trust’s first ever drama camp (with funding from Create NSW and the Office for Regional YouthDepartment of Regional NSW).

Merrigong supports Beyond Empathy’s team of artists, mentors, community workers and leaders with strong connections to First Nations communities, through a partnership that provides young people in need with access to the theatre.

Merrigong works with Vision Australia to connect people who are blind or have low vision to the theatre through our services of Audio Descriptions and on-stage Tactile Tours for selected shows.

Our partnership with Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation aims to provide positive, supported pathways into employment for local First Nations community members.

Merrigong works with Woolyungah Indigenous Centre to host interns from the University of Wollongong to improve student opportunities for career development and employment in the arts.

Merrigong partners with South Coast Writers Centre to provide venue support for their annual South Coast Writers’ Festival, Young Writers’ Program, and Live and Local, a satellite event of the Sydney Writers’ Festival, as well as the Merrigong & SCWC Playwright’s Project.

We are working with Green Connect to improve our social responsibility and sustainable approach to delivering events to the community.

Merrigong supports Wollongong Conservatorium of Music in connecting community and young people to music in our venues.

39

Support Merrigong

Merrigong is dedicated to delivering experiences that are relevant and impactful to the diverse people of our region. We invest in a range of programs with community groups, schools and artists that deliver tangible outcomes through paid residencies, employment and the development of new theatre work.

There are many ways that you can support this work, from tax-deductible donations, to corporate partnerships, to becoming part of our team of highly-valued volunteers. Your contribution can help us build a brighter future for artists, audiences and our community.

Merrigong’s Inner Circle

Make a tax-deductible donation of $250 or more and you’ll be part of our Inner Circle, with recognition online and in our foyers for 12 months. We also send Inner Circle donors occasional special invitations to events, as well as regular updates on how their donations are being used to support our programs.

Our Inner Circle donors are recognised at three levels of support:
