MAYOR’S MESSAGE

We have a rich history in Merriam when it comes to our business community. Merriam Town Center opened back in 1998, IKEA in 2015, AdventHealth built a birth center in 2013, and many car dealerships opened or expanded business along I-35 throughout the years. New construction is happening, too. Chipotle is coming to the old Taco Bell located on Shawnee Mission Parkway, east of I-35, and across the street, the old Kmart location is now part of the TIF district. Developers have shown interest in the property, and we’re eager to see what may come. We’re also focusing on the look and feel of downtown Merriam over the next few years. Be sure to attend our open houses on April 7 and April 12 to give feedback on our progress. Businesses, both big and small, are the backbone of our City. We encourage you to learn about a few of them in our cover story on page 8 as we celebrate diversity in our business community. Then, go out and support these business owners as you shop for your wants and needs. You can also be part of our community by attending one of many summer events hosted by the City. The Turkey Creek Festival is coming back in May after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. We also have the Merriam Community Center’s second birthday party in July. Whatever your summer plans, we hope you celebrate in Merriam. Your Mayor, Bob Pape

Planning for the Future of Merriam Drive The City of Merriam, along with its partners, the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), Overland Park, Mission, and Kansas City, Kansas, are finalizing plans for the future design of Merriam Drive.

Stay Involved

Drop in and see the progress of each plan and give your feedback. The goal is to complete the design of Merriam Drive by the end of the year with construction starting in 2023.

MARC’s Planning Sustainable Places grant partially funded two planning projects: Downtown Merriam and Merriam Connected Corridor. These two plans cover Merriam Drive from Johnson Drive to Southwest Boulevard.

Downtown Merriam Public Open House Thursday, April 7 5:30–7:30 p.m. Merriam Community Center 6040 Slater St.

The two projects began in fall 2021 and are guided by local residents, business owners, local officials, and community leaders. Planning goals for the projects include combining complete street concepts, appropriate land uses, streetscape enhancements, and the design and layout of Merriam Drive.

Merriam Connected Corridor Public Open House Tuesday, April 12 5:30–7:30 p.m. Merriam Community Center 6040 Slater St.

Both plans are scheduled to be finalized in April and presented to the City Council. Residents can follow the progress and see final plans at merriam.org/downtown.

Merriam Becoming More Bike-Friendly You asked, and we listened! During the Comprehensive Plan 2040 process, community members said Merriam needs more bike lanes. In response, the City conducted a bike and pedestrian study. The study results showed that Merriam could increase mobility by adding more bike lanes to connect to other Johnson County trails and communities. And, by making Merriam more mobile, it would: ▶ Increase the number of people who walk or bike.

▶ Increase road safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. ▶ Make the Merriam community healthier. The study is now a guide for when the City works on new street improvement projects. As construction crews replace new streets and sidewalks across Merriam, we plan to add new bike paths where recommended in the bike plan. Visit merriam.org/bikes to see the bike plan and learn more about the study.

2022 Street Improvements Look for repaved roads and other street upgrades as we gear up for construction season. Street improvement plans are in the works for 55th St. from Merriam Drive to Switzer Road and on West Frontage Road from Turkey Creek Drive to 75th St. 55th St. improvements include: ▶ Repaving the road ▶ Installing bike lanes ▶ Replacing/installing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters ▶ Replacing ADA sidewalk ramps as needed ▶ Installing street lights ▶ Repairing/installing storm drains West Frontage Road improvements include: ▶ Repaving the road ▶ Installing a new pedestrian bridge over Turkey Creek ▶ Adding new sidewalks, curbs, and gutters as needed ▶ Replacing ADA sidewalk ramps as needed ▶ Repairing/replacing storm drains ▶ BNSF is replacing the crossing panels The City plans to repave many streets across Merriam. See a complete list at merriam.org/cip. Contact Public Works at 913-322-5570 if you have any questions about these projects. SUMMER 2022 2022 ▶ ▶ 55 SUMMER

Celebrating Diversity Across Merriam’s Business Community The City of Merriam celebrates diverse business owners in our Just Right city. Of the 525 businesses in Merriam, nearly 100 are owned by women, Black, Latinx, Asian Americans, and other minorities who reported it on their business application. We’re highlighting a few of these business owners as we applaud the contributions they’ve made to our community.

ShotTracker

“You can’t score if you don’t shoot.” That’s what ShotTracker co-founder Davyeon Ross said about opening his business. ShotTracker, now under parent company Data Driven Sports, is a Merriam-based business located just west of I-35 next to Strawberry Hill Povitica. Ross and co-founder Bruce Ianni created ShotTracker in 2013. Ianni was shooting hoops with his son and was curious about how he could track his son’s progress. “Bruce reached out to me, and we decided to work together to create a solution, and ShotTracker was born,” Ross said. The company has evolved over the years. Ross said it’s a “sports technology solution” that’s used by college basketball programs across the nation. The sensor-based system tracks statistics and instantly sends analytics to teams and fans. The successful company now partners with some big names such as ESPN, NCAA, the Big 12, the Mountain West Conference, Learfield, and Playfly Sports. 8 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION

ShotTracker ended up in Merriam because they needed space. “[We were] looking for a location with 25-foot ceilings and enough space to put in a basketball court,” Ross said. “Merriam has been incredible for us.” He said starting a business is hard and that it takes a village to grow. “The Kansas City community has provided incredible support to ShotTracker, from funding to introductions and, most importantly, cheering us on,” Ross said. As for being a Black business owner, Ross said society has come a long way, but there’s still room for improvement. “Although ShotTracker has raised significant capital, in 2019, only 1% of venture capital went to founders of color. 2020 stats were more appalling,” Ross said. “I’m grateful for what we’ve been able to do, but the work has just started.”

Davyeon Ross

MERRIAM BUSINESS OWNER

Davyeon Ross is the co-founder of DDSports Inc., with ShotTracker as its first product. Davyeon and his co-founder, Bruce Ianni, opened ShotTracker in Merriam in 2013. A native of Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies, Davyeon left Trinidad in 1996 on a full basketball scholarship, where he was a four-year starter and captain on Benedictine College’s basketball team. Davyeon earned a bachelor of science in computer science and his MBA from Mid-America Nazarene University.

What’s ShotTracker?

ShotTracker is a sensor-based system that delivers statistics and analytics to teams, fans, and broadcast networks. It enhances the game experience for those both on and off the court.

What do you love about your company?

The team. We’re fortunate to have the brightest, hardest working minds in the business. Our success is purely dependent on this incredible group of people who make up ShotTracker.

How has your company grown through the years?

ShotTracker has evolved into a leading sports technology solution utilized by the biggest collegiate basketball programs across the country.

You’re now partnering with some big companies. What’s that experience been like? We’re very fortunate to have such large, prestigious organizations that want to be involved and have gotten involved with ShotTracker. It’s been a fun ride, and these partners continue to push us to new heights. The word that comes to mind is grateful.

What’s your vision for ShotTracker?

Our goal is that ShotTracker will be installed across every NCAA Division I basketball program.

What’s next for ShotTracker?

We’re working on proliferating our technology in other sports and living up to our corporate name DDSports, which stands for Data Driven Sports.

Spirit Life

Debra Roark said she dreamed of opening a company like hers in college.

family reunion apparel, gifts, or hosting a ‘Print N Sip’ for small groups.”

“Growing up, I was always interested in sports and fashion,” Roark said. “I eventually went on to college to pursue a degree in fashion merchandising.”

Roark started her business at home before it grew too big. She’s now in her second office space in Merriam on IKEA Way.

After focusing on parenthood and being “the biggest cheerleader” for her children, Roark opened Spirit Life in 2010. The small screenprinting business grew to include embroidery services. Ten years later, it expanded again to offer event planning and hosting. “I love that this has allowed me to continue to be creative and pair many things that I love together,” Roark said. “I’m family-oriented and enjoy working with other families to bring their visions together – whether it’s for graduation or

“Merriam was a blessing in disguise for my business,” Roark said. “It truly has been a great place for Spirit Life. I’ve gotten quite a bit of support…in my time here.” That support helped Roark when times weren’t easy. “In the wake of community unrest and the global plight of COVID-19, more people have reached out to me and my business to help,” Roark said. “This has given me a sense of renewed faith as a Black woman in business.”

National Small Business Week: May 1–7 Small Business Week celebrates the impact businesses have on our local community and national economy. In Merriam, small businesses are important to our City and make up a great portion of our workforce. During National Small Business Week, we invite you to recognize, celebrate, and appreciate small businesses that call Merriam home. 10 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS & RECREATION

La Beauty Bar

Denisse Viera Santiago opened La Beauty Bar in Merriam last year. The business specializes in postoperative care after cosmetic surgery and offers non-invasive, holistic treatments. A licensed massage therapist and esthetician, Viera said she loves helping women gain confidence. “I love that I’m able to help women with the pre- and post-op care and contouring the body in a beautiful shape,” Viera said. “It’s been an amazing journey to help people feel and look good with themselves.” Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Viera said she encourages all Latina women to know that they also can own their own business. “I would always encourage them to build their own empire and to become who they want to be and to believe in themselves,” Viera said. “We have this in our genes to grow and push higher.” Viera said Merriam was the perfect spot to open La Beauty Bar because of the easy access and centralized location for her clients. She saw great support since she opened on Shawnee Mission Parkway and is excited to watch her business grow in the future.

Handyman Connection

Alice Lund’s company, Handyman Connection, is a one-stop-shop for small- to medium-sized home improvement projects. Lund bought the company in 2005, though it opened in Merriam in 1998. “Being a woman-owned business gives me a great sense of pride,” Lund said. “[We’re] in the minority, but especially so when it comes to construction-related businesses.” Lund said she and her employees have worked with hundreds of Merriam residents over the years, from painting rooms to repairing windows to full bathroom remodels. Often asked about what makes her qualified to run a construction company, Lund said she’s passionate about customer service and is a great listener. Knowing the right contractors for the right jobs also helps. “This community has treated us well for the last 23 years, and I would encourage any women thinking about starting a business to consider Merriam,” Lund said. “I love that my nine-year-old daughter can look at what I’m doing, and it leads her to believe that she, too, could have her own business someday.” SUMMER SUMMER 2022 2022 ▶ 11 11

Merriam Receives Bronze Award from MARC The City of Merriam in January was recognized with a Bronze Award for committing to make Merriam a more welcoming place for people of all ages.

The Mid-America Regional Council gave the award to Merriam to acknowledge the work the City has done to become more age-friendly through MARC’s Community for All Ages program. Merriam City Councilmembers approved a resolution to take part in the program, and the City posted age-awareness education on the webpage merriam.org/cfaa. The City will next consider pursuing the Silver Award, which looks at how Merriam can better serve the community, including expanding city services and designing new programs. Read more about the award at merriam.org.

Meet Lisa Naughton ADMINISTRATIVE SUPERVISOR

Lisa Naughton started working at the Merriam Parks and Recreation Department 15 years ago. Now the administrative supervisor, you’ll see Lisa at the front desk welcoming you to the Merriam Community Center. Lisa raised three children in Merriam, where she’s lived for 29 years. When she’s not at work, you’ll find Lisa spending her time with her three grandchildren, playing color tag, hide-and-seek, painting, swimming, and tabletop games.

What’s your average day look like?

There’s no typical day at the community center. Each day provides new challenges and opportunities to learn! Typical tasks can vary from assisting in class registration, preparing a room for an event, or welcoming a patron to the facility as well as responding to countless questions that are presented each day.

What do you like about your job?

I’ve always loved the opportunity to meet patrons coming into the community center and getting to know their stories. I was afraid that might get lost with the move to the new community center. However, that has remained and grown with the addition of the indoor pool and child watch areas.

14 ▶ MERRIAM 14 ▶ MERRIAM HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS & & RECREATION RECREATION

Why is Parks & Rec so important for a community?

Park and Recreation is the heart and soul of a community. It gives a community its identity, allowing residents to break away from their routine and participate in activities that connect them to their families, neighbors, and community.

What do you think about the MCC?

Not a day goes by where someone doesn’t mention the beauty of the facility. The community center is supported by a team of people who take a lot of pride in serving the community with excellence.

Why should someone sign up for a class or program?

Classes and programs are an excellent way to meet new people. By signing up, a patron is committing to the group that they will be there for each other as they work toward a common goal.

What would you like visitors to know more about the MCC? I think we have a lot of great classes. Many of our classes allow people to pay a drop-in fee. This is the perfect opportunity to “try it before you buy it” before committing to the entire session. Our classes are really an underutilized treasure.

Spring and Summer Codes to Know

Merriam’s Just Right, and it’s our goal to keep it this way! City codes are in place to protect neighborhoods against blight and deterioration and promote the health, safety, and wellbeing of our residents. Staff regularly patrols the City to identify maintenance violations and notifies residents if corrections are needed. As warm weather draws near, here are some things to keep in mind: ▶ Parking on grass is prohibited. You must park on a hard surface, such as asphalt or concrete. ▶ Weeds and grass must be kept trimmed below 10 inches in height. ▶ Waste containers are required to be screened or stored behind your home’s front building line. Trash stored outdoors must be in a container with a lid. ▶ Boats, RVs, campers, and trailers must be parked or stored behind the front building line on a hard surface. ▶ Vehicles stored outdoors are required to be operable. This includes current licensing with all required parts in place and working. Flat tires make a vehicle inoperable. ▶ House address numbers need to be easily readable from the street and at least 4 inches in height. This can save precious time should an emergency responder need to find you. ▶ Some repair, remodeling, and new projects may require a building permit, such as fences, roof installations, and driveways. Make sure you check with the Community Development Department to see if your project needs a permit. Contact the Community Development Department at 913-322-5520 with any questions.

Kindness Week April 13–21

Be more happy, healthy, and productive as you spread kindness within the community, with colleagues, and with yourself. It has proven positive physical and mental effects on the human body. MCC Member Spotlight Naeem and Naomi Malik

What do you like about coming to the MCC? It’s a beautiful facility with lots of fun stuff to do for the whole family, and the staff is so pleasant and professional. What do you most use at the facility? I usually go with weights and cardio 3–4 times a week. My wife, Naomi, loves to take the boys swimming. Our oldest son, Malachi Eli, loves to play basketball, while our 11-month-old, Matias Azariah, loves the nursery and staff. When you’re not here at the MCC, how do you enjoy spending your time? When I’m not working, I love time with the boys! Our youngest just started walking, so that’s a whole adventure of its own. Our oldest loves playing outdoors, doing science experiments and going out with the metal detector

and hunt for treasure. Naomi is an incredibly talented woman, working full-time and attending classes at Johnson County Community College among many other part-time endeavors. She loves painting or doing some other kind of artsy fun stuff with the boys. If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you would do? We would give back to those in need and donate to good causes, invest in our boys’ future, travel the world, and build two new houses (one to live in and one to house all of Naomi’s new shoes). When you have 30 minutes of free time, how do you pass the time? Family movie night, go to the park, or do something fun with the boys. SUMMER 2022 ▶ 23

Advanced swimmers learn correct freestyle breathing, streamlines, backstroke, and other swim techniques. They’ll spend 45 minutes on instruction and 15 minutes playing games. Choose two days per week.

Infant Aquatic Survival Swim (Walkers)

This eight-week program teaches toddlers the swimfloat-swim sequence. Children learn to swim a short distance with their face fully submerged, roll onto their back, float and rest whenever they need to breathe, and to flip back onto their tummy to continue to swim to safety while fully clothed.
