What counts as innovation in the printing industry is in the advances of inks and print heads. The ink is the crucial ingredient and the print head is the crucial hardware. The printer is primarily the structure which delivers the ink to the printer through the electronics of the print head. Therefore, the release of a printer is meaningless without novelty in inks and print heads. It’s the innovation in inks and print heads that leads to innovation in the printing business.

HP to acquire Samsung’s printing business for $1.05 billion

ME‌Printer October 2016

HP aims to disrupt the $55 billion copier industry with superior MFP technology

4

HP will acquire the entire global operations and assets of Samsung Electronics Co.’s printer business in a deal valued at $1.05 billion. The transaction is part of Samsung’s efforts to concentrate on its core business areas.Samsung’s printing business, with 6,000 employees, a production base in China as well as more than 50 sales offices globally, posted $1.7 billion in revenue in 2015. The company will spin off its printing business unit into a separate company as of Nov. 1 upon the approval of shareholders, and sell a 100 percent stake of the newly created company and overseas assets related to the business to HP. This is the largest print acquisition in HP’s history and accelerates its growth opportunities in the copier segment, strengthens its leading laser printing portfolio that has been established with Canon, and paves the way for future printing innovation. It also creates new avenues for growth and greater profitability for partners as they expand managed print services as sales models shift from transactional to contractual. The acquisition positions HP to disrupt and reinvent the $55 billion

copier industryby replacing copiers with superior multifunction printer (MFP) technology. Samsung has built a formidable portfolio of A3 MFPs that deliver the performance of copiers with the power, simplicity, reliability and ease-of-use of printers and with as few as seven replaceable parts. By integrating the Samsung printer business’ products, including their mobilefirst and cloud-first user experience, with HP’s next-generation PageWide technologies, HP aims to create a breakthrough portfolio of printing solutions. “When we became a separate company just 10 months ago, it enabled us to become nimble and focus on accelerating growth and reinventing industries,” said Dion Weisler, president and CEO of HP. “We are doing this with 3D printing and the disruption of the $12 trillion traditional manufacturing industry, and now we are going after the $55 billion copier space. The acquisition of Samsung’s printer business allows us to deliver print innovation and create entirely new business opportunities with far better efficiency, security, and economics for customers.” Samsung’s printer business also

brings an intellectual property portfolio of more than 6,500 printing patents and a workforce that includes nearly 1,300 researchers and engineers with advanced expertise in laser printer technology, imaging electronics, and printer supplies and accessories to support continued innovation in print market solutions. “HP Inc. has been a valued partner and customer of Samsung,” said Dr. Oh-Hyun Kwon, vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics Co. “We can now leverage our combined capacity for innovation to further enhance the value of our relationship." Under the agreement, Samsung will source printers from HP and continue to market in Korea under the Samsung brand. The transaction is expected to close within one year, subject to the appropriate regulatory approvals. After closing, Samsung has agreed to make a $100 million to $300 million equity investment in HP through open market purchases. Acquiring Samsung’s printer business will also strengthen HP’s ability to service customers in global laser printing, a category where it has enjoyed a strong, mutually beneficial partnership with Canon for more than three decades. HP is confident this transaction will provide new opportunities to further strengthen and accelerate this relationship. “HP and Canon have long discussed print innovation to create customer value in business printing and in the growing MPS market,” said Fujio Mitarai, chairman and CEO of Canon Inc.“This transaction will further evolve our collaboration and bring about growth for both of our companies.”

KBA-Sheetfed and Actega seal strategic partnership The prime objective of the cooperation is to ensure the availability of highquality coating systems for KBA's sheetfed offset presses

Ralf Sammeck, CEO of KBASheetfed Solutions (left), and Jörg Eck, managing director of Actega Terra

KBA-Sheetfed, manufacturer of sheetfed offset printing presses, and Actega Coatings & Sealants, a division of the global speciality chemicals group Altana, have forged a strategic alliance in the field of inline finishing. The new cooperation agreement further intensifies their existing partnership and places activities on an even higher, strategic level. Actega products which have been tested on Rapida sheetfed offset presses

are to carry the seal of quality “Approved and licensed varnish by KBA”. The prime objective of the cooperation is to ensure the availability of high-quality coating systems for KBA's high-performance sheetfed offset presses. Already during commissioning, the use of correspondingly approved products under uniform conditions will serve to establish application standards. This, in turn, will safe-

guard both outstanding finishing quality and high performance in the inline coating process. All users who obtain their coating products through the Actega sales network will benefit from the predefined product standards, as new products will already be tested and optimised for use on Rapidasheetfed offset presses. On the bottom line, the cooperation can thus be seen as a further means to maximise the business success of users whose work involves the application of varnish coatings in an inline process. KBA and Actega will be cooperating at a global level. The plans to date include joint product and sales training, print demonstrations at KBA, at fairs and at customer events, the development of appropriate starter kits to be supplied with new presses, and continuous further development of the products concerned. To this end, regular tests will be conducted on the Rapida presses installed at the KBA customer centre. The cooperation covers water-based, UV, HR-UV and LED-UV coatings.

“We provide a one-stop shop for total print solutions” US-based print solutions provider ABC Imaging is expanding globally having set up a 30,000 sqft facility in Dubai Production City. Medi Falsafi, president and CEO, ABC Imaging, explains the growth opportunity in the UAE and Middle East and how ABC differentiates itself in the market.

Medi Falsafi president and CEO, ABC Imaging

What is ABC Imaging’s market opportunity in the UAE? We observed that the major brand owners and agencies in the UAE relied on multiple suppliers for their various printing requirements. The printed products sourced from various companies differ from each other in quality, price, and timeliness. As a result of inconsistencies in printing processes, customer service, delivery and so on, print customers don’t fully trust in any single print service provider. Some big companies have attempted to address these issues by operating their own in-house printing divisions, but they have failed because printing is not their core competency and they lack the focus and resources to manage or expand in-house printing divisions successfully. We have identified the market opportunity to offer a one-stop solution and service for all kinds of printing requirements at highly competitive prices.

ME‌Printer October 2016

What is the company’s core competency? Our competency is providing total print solutions. We have the resources to handle all kinds of printing requests as per the annual marketing plan of a company. We are deeply involved in our clients’ businesses and we understand their long-term goals. As a result, we work as an extension of their departments with staff dedicated to serve each client. We provide a seamless experience around printing with efficiency and quality that our clients do not have to worry about it at all. Our mission statement is to impress every client every time.

8

Who are your biggest customers and how do you retain them? Some of our biggest clients in the US are large retail chains. They run frequent marketing campaigns during seasons, festivals, holidays, and other occasions. We are their single point of contact for all printing and distribution whenever they need to communicate a new message in their stores spread across the country. Therefore, it is critical that our services are available 24/7 and our systems and processes are secure in order to ensure efficiency, quality, and timely delivery. We ensure this through

the processes created to manage jobs from the time they are submitted up to their delivery at the clients’ stores. We maintain a record of all our customer brand guidelines, number of locations, and printing specifications for each location, such as size, shape, and material which vary with each store. The customer just needs to place an order online through our portals and we take of the rest. To serve our big clients better, we appoint our employees in their offices to manage their demand with the support of our local customer service and IT departments. We retain our customers by exceeding their expectations every time. As a result, they prefer to continue working with us and we enter into long-term agreements with them. How are you differentiating your services in the UAE? In the UAE, we have three business divisions – reprographics, scanning and archiving, and grand format graphics. We have been offering printing, scanning, and archiving services to law firms for the past two years with great success. We expect grand format printing to be our fastest growing business division because of the demand in this market for billboards, vehicle wraps, and other interior and exterior signage. We are experts in this area, and our services will focus on supply chain efficiency through a seamless printing, fabrication, and installation process to save time and money for our customers. Furthermore, we are investing in in e-commerce to expand our existing portals such as Printingroom.com and Print. dryink.com to cater to the online customer base in this region. We also plan to expand our scanning, archiving, and 3D printing services in 2017. What are your expansion opportunities? Our expansion requirements arise from the distribution and logistics demands of our customers. A large number of our clients are global companies seeking better distribution services for all their branches and stores around the world. In the Middle East, Dubai is the logistics hub for the Middle East and also our distribution centre for the region. This enables us to manage inventory and quality from a single location. We will open new distribution centres in other Middle Eastern countries only when we can deliver the same standards of quality through local partners and workforce. We have plans to open a distribution centre in Oman. As we expand in Asia, we will cater to the East Asia market through our distribution centres in Shanghai and Hong Kong in the future.

“Korean companies have mastered the development of integrated solutions” Q&A with Young-Bok, Nam, manager, Korea Printing Technology Association (KPTA) at the Korea International Printing Machinery and Equipment Show, KIPES 2016 Where does Korea stand in printing technology leadership among global manufacturers? Korea has one of the longest histories of printing innovation, and technology has played the biggest role in helping Korean manufacturers achieve their competencies in R&D, product development and applications. They have gained expertise in the development of integrated solutions through collaboration with the world’s best printing equipment and software companies, rather that manufacturing standalone printing presses or consumables. Digital technology has become the driver of printing solutions worldwide, and Korean manufacturers follow the same trend. The success of brands such as d-gen and Dilli, which have put Korean technology on the global map, is encouraging local companies to showcase their strengths to the world. We believe that with the right support and guidance, more local Korean brands will be able to gain recognition worldwide and compete with international manufacturers.

What strategy should Korean companies adopt to achieve global competitive advantage? Korean printing companies need to adopt a blue ocean strategy for their businesses. Future growth lies in niche markets where high-value products can be sold in small quantities. The focus should be creating new opportunities with customization, personalization, and web-to-print. Manufacturers and service providers must invest more in process optimization and workflow automation. It is equally important to master the art of marketing and communication to a global audience. As companies pursue global ambitions, it is important to understand the specific characteristics of each market, regulations, and customer behaviours. We urge companies to seek expertise to get training on export markets, product planning, and promotion. Also, there needs to be more industry-academia collaboration to share information and upgrade skills. What’s KPTA’s role in supporting Korea’s printing sector? The Korea Printing Technology Association (KPTA) helps Korean manufacturers expand first within the Korean market, and then introduce their technology and brands to global markets. In particular, we focus on assisting SMEs from rural areas in Korea which do not have the marketing and training resources and experience in gathering market intelligence and promoting their brands. To achieve this, we collaborate closely with several other Korean printing associations and government bodies to organize training seminars and conferences to educate them about ISO standards and help them comply with all other international standards. In addition, we guide them on sustainability, intellectual property, patents, and rights.

Young-Bok, Nam manager, (KPTA)

ME‌Printer October 2016

What are the challenges and growth opportunities for Korea’s printing industry? Print is still very much in demand in Korea. Top drivers of the market include books, newspapers, magazines, marketing collateral, carton boxes, flexible packaging, and labels. There’s a wider adoption of hybrid printing for traditional applications, webto-print, package printing, industrial and functional printing. However, the presence of over 18,000 small printing companies has created excessive capacity which has led to severe competition and below-cost tendering by several competitors. The majority of Korean manufacturers continue to focus on the local market, and language remains one of the biggest barriers to their global expansion. As the focus shifts from B2B to B2C markets, manufacturing is changing from from mass production to low quantity batch production and customization supported with diverse post-processing techniques, application of various materials, eco-friendly printing, and higher quality standards. Korea is one of the most wired countries in the world, and its superior IT infrastructure and manufacturing fa-

cilities are enabling print service providers to increase efficiency and explore the full potential of web-to-print. The existing infrastructure and human resources along with more automation can help Korean companies reduce their fixed costs and achieve lower production costs than in other developed countries.

Sharjah’s transformation into a world book capital

ME‌Printer October 2016

Sharjah International Book Fair will celebrate its 35th anniversary with literary, cultural and entertainment activities taking place in November 2016 at Expo Centre Sharjah

10

Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), an annual event organised by Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) brings together millions of book titles and tens of thousands of visitors, exhibitors and publishers under its umbrella. SIBF now enjoys a reputation as a renowned international event, a cultural extravaganza and an annual activity that is much-awaited by intellectuals and lovers of the written word. This year, celebrating its 35th anniversary, SIBF continues to expand its presence, consolidating Sharjah’s position as the Capital of Islamic and Arab culture and

confidently advancing its bid to become a world book Capital. SIBF’s three-and-a-half decades of continuous success and excellence has happened under the vision and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, who outlined his vision to a youth audience at a theatrical event on April 18, 1979 with the words: “It is time to stop the concrete revolution of civil construction in the country and replace it with a cultural revolution instead." His Highness’s remarks were made just three years

before the launch of the first edition of SIBF in January 1982, with the event constituting the first steps on a roadmap towards igniting youth interest in culture and knowledge. Sheikh Dr Sultan’s famous proverb “Culture is a wining bet” truly summarises the story of a book fair which was launched with only six publishers and no visitors. Some who had initially proposed the idea of the fair advised that Sharjah should shelve the event and search for alternative projects instead. However, Sheikh Dr Sultan bet on culture and the future, with the result being

scene and launch new initiatives that serve not only residents in Sharjah and the UAE, but also those of all Arab countries. The last five editions have witnessed record-breaking figures, with 4.8 million people visiting the fairs from its 30th to 34th editions. The 34th edition featured 1,000 activities, an increase from the 400 taking place during its 30th edition, with exhibition space increasing from 7,600 to 16,000 square metres in the same timeframe. Every year, SIBF hosts a long list of thought leaders and literary figures, carving out its position as one of the three most prestigious book fairs in the world. The fair has raised many inspirational slogans to remain in people’s minds, such as ‘Reading for all,’ ‘Read You Are in Sharjah’ and ‘For Love of the Written Word.’ Demonstrating His Highness’s desire to inculcate good reading habits at an early age, the theme of the 19th edition of SIBF was ‘Reading for Children.’ During SIBF’s 27th edition, Sheikh Dr Sultan unveiled ‘Knowledge without Borders’ as an extension of a series of initiatives that support outstanding publishing houses, creative writers and illustrators. SIBF allocated valuable cash prizes and awards that have now become an established tradition of the region’s most popular fair. With all its landmark achievements, SIBF is not unrealistically seeking to become the largest and most important book fair in the world. SIBF has become keenly awaited by intellectuals from across the globe. Over the years, the fair has developed into a leading event where thought leaders, intellectuals and writers get together to share ideas and views during panel discussions and sessions, in the process re-energising the cultural landscape of the region and creating a must-attend calendar activity for all.

SIBF seeks to instil a lifetime love of reading in everyone, attracting children and young people in particular through its activities that combine learning and fun. The fair attracts school visits and students who come from across the UAE, with SIBF reciprocating by arranging writers and guests to visit schools in the UAE to share their ideas and experiences with the students. These visits aim to introduce students to the guests’ skills in writing and story-telling to enhance the fair’s role in promoting culture and knowledge among community members and in nurturing the minds of pupils and children who are the future generation. The year 2014 was a milestone in SIBF’s history because it coincided with the ‘celebrations of Sharjah’ being named ‘Capital of Islamic Culture’. SIBF 2014 featured a rich programme of events and activities consistent with Sharjah’s well-deserved new recognition as a cultural beacon and a book capital. The following year for the 34th edition of SIBF, Sheikh Dr Sultan announced a donation of AED 4 million to purchase books from the exhibitors participating in the fair as a contribution towards the support of book publishing and investment in human intellectual development and encouraging writers in the Arab world. SIBF’s participation in literary and cultural events in fraternal and friendly countries across the world has showcased Sharjah’s rich intellectual assets on the global stage. The emirate’s activities abroad complement the events, exhibitions and conferences it hosts annually to celebrate culture and its related genres. Its excellence in this area makes the emirate a destination of choice for intellectuals, writers and publishers, as well as other professionals and people interested in cultural matters and the publishing industry locally, regionally and globally.

ME‌Printer October 2016

that SIBF emerged as one of the emirate’s and the region’s most important events. From its very onset, SIBF refused to serve as just a large marketplace for books and has grown to become a major cultural event that brings together readers, publishers and intellectuals, from the Arab world and from across the globe. Capitalising on Sharjah’s internationally-acclaimed reputation, SIBF was positioned toward becoming a destination for specialists and experts looking for a platform that connects them with other stakeholders, as well as for ordinary readers thirsty for new literary works and titles to expand their knowledge. With a limited number of publishers, the first edition of the Sharjah Book Fair was opened by Sheikh Dr Sultan on January 18, 1982. As he received delegates representing Arab publishing houses, he commented: “Bringing up children in a proper environment must be driven by faith in Arab unity, with an emphasis on the role of youth in intellectual development. Publishing houses need to play a leading role in serving these lofty principles.” Two years later, SIBF had significantly expanded its profile, attracting more publishers and visitors, in particular prominent Arab cultural figures and intellectuals. The third edition of SIBF, which was opened on October 8, 1984, was attended by Yusuf Idris, Egypt’s famous short-story writer and novelist. It was during this fair that Sheikh Dr Sultan remarked: “Sharjah’s cultural work will witness a big leap in the coming period.” This prescience was confirmed by SIBF’s fifth edition, which saw the participation of prominent Arab figures in creative fields, including Syrian poet Adonis, Egyptian poet Farouk Shousha and late Sudanese novelist Al Tayyeb Saleh. Since its inception, SIBF has been a space to enrich the cultural

2016–17 sparks both excitement and concern for the printing industry

The SGI Dubai 2017 Knowledge Series, organized by International Expo Consults in September 2016, brought together UAE-based manufacturers and distributors who discussed the current state of the Middle East printing and related industries, opportunities, threats, as well as new applications and growth trends in the signage, textile, and 3D printing sectors. Here're some views expressed by the participants.

Karthik Murugesan, sales manager, Roland, Emirates Computers “The signage industry in the UAE is poised to benefit from the infrastructure developments planned for the next few years as well as growth in the retail and entertainment industries. As demand for digital and conventional signage is likely to grow, the traditional signage industry should take a more holistic approach to signage and how it influences customer perception. There was a time when print service providers catering to outof-home (OOH) advertising could expect the major chunk of the advertising budget. Today, digital signage has become a natural extension of any OOH campaign whether or not it involves printed signage, largely due to advancement in technology and change in user behaviour. This evolution in technology and applications cannot be stopped and therefore should be embraced by industry. The expansion of the signage industry as a result of new digital signage applications could only

be better for growth of printed signage.” Ayman Ali, marketing manager, Canon Middle East “Trends in the signage industry are influenced directly by new trends in marketing and advertising as well as economic performance and population growth. Brand owners and agencies are allocating a combined budget for integrated marketing which includes print, digital, social media and other channels. Conventional or printed signage is now part of a network which included digital screens, POS displays, kiosks and other installations which provide static or dynamic content or interactivity depending on their locations. The printing industry must see the bigger picture and accept these trends and find ways to offer complementary solutions to support marketing objectives rather than viewing printed signage services in isolation. There are several positive indicators for the growth of demand for signage in the Middle East region.

If we consider the UAE, the main growth drivers are the retail, entertainment, and MICE industries. In this market, there is a place for all kinds of signage, but as marketers get more innovative with their campaigns and selective with their budgets, it’s important to understand how printing can add value to the marketing and communication goals of companies and brands.” Jihad Abdeljalil, managing director-MENA, Flex-Europa “Digital and social platforms have become the advertising media of choice for today’s generation. PSP are finding it difficult to maintain their advertising revenue stream because they are competing with digital channels and social media which offer highly targeted advertising and, in several cases, higher ROI. This trend will eventually affect demand for outdoor signage. Other factors, too, have affected the growth of the conventional signage industry. Certain segments of signage such has shop signs have undergone huge transformation

we notice that there has been a lot of speculation over the last 10 years about whether digital signage will replace traditional signage entirely; however that has not yet happened. While digital signage is a great alternative, conventional signage has its advantages and I believe if PSPs understand its full potential, they will discover new revenue streams.” Elias Bekhaazi, Digital Graphic Systems division manager, Giffin Graphics “New growth opportunities are being created with new digital printing applications in interior decoration, textile, and packaging. Since 2015, we’ve witnessed a rapid growth in the installation of textile printers and their adoption by the fashion industry. Printing on cotton for home decorative applications is popular in this region. Currently, we’re seeing demand for low-volume production machines, but the market indications are clear that the fashion industry will adopt highvolume production printers in the next few years. However, for large scale industrial production to take off in this region, it’s a question of cost effectives and price, not technology or consumer demand. I believe the Middle East market is ready for low-volume personalization businesses in the textile sector.” Philippe Husni, managing director, Heliozid Oce “From a manufacturing perspective, the garment and textile industry in the region may not be able to print and produce high volume cost-effectively and compete with other markets in Asia, but when we look at it from the retail perspective, this region has a global representation of retail brands, and the high competition requires them to go to market fast, into stores and be ahead of the latest trends. As consumer demand for localization and personalization increases, brands would want to control these value added services and quality, locally, which would attract more global fashion brands to personalize their textiles for this region.”

in the past few years. For example, LED illuminated channel letters have replaced printed backlit signs, which has eroded this revenue stream for PSPs. Despite the bleak outlook, PSPs can be successful in the Middle East markets provide they tackle the challenges of quality, price, credit, and service.” Dilawar Dalwai, managing director, Al Mahir Printing Equipment Trading “The UAE hosts a large number of events, which alone is a big business generator for the signage industry. Some of the exhibitions in Dubai are the biggest of their kind in the world, and there’ll be no shortage of global mega events that can be hosted in the city in the future. I believe such events and related activities will continue to sustain the growth of the signage industry. However, PSP must tackle the shift in the buying behaviours of brand owners and consumers who are more informed and choosy about spending and brand loyalty. This has created cutthroat competition in the market. Corporate in-house printing is taking off in a big way as large companies seek full control of their marketing communication media, security, and budgets. In order to compete in such an environment, it is important for PSPs to stay ahead of technology shifts, and realise that technology advancement and innovation calls for fresh investment, processes and talent.” Panos Bartziokas, general manager, Agfa Graphics Middle East “The printing industry need long-term indicators of growth, which could be more government spending on infrastructure, tourism, and events. Mega events such as Expo 2020, while they build confidence and kick start projects, need to be supported with long-term growth in sectors such as tourism, hospitality, and retail. We believe the UAE leadership has taken all this into account, and we’ll see the positive outcome of their strategies post the Expo 2020 show. When analyzing the state of the conventional signage industry,

Where would you go to get unbiased, rational advice? Comparative performance data always seems to be the crucial element missing when it comes to making a major new investment decision By Rod Hayes

As I have grown older, I rarely have a difficult purchasing decision to make; over the years, I have accumulated most of the things that makes a life comfortable, and of course, a lot of things that serve no purpose whatsoever. Yet I am not immune to having purchasing decisions requiring considerable thought and input. Two recent purchases stand out. To make my point one is simplistic, the other complex. Choosing a new vacuum cleaner, a simple and easy one that, cordless with a rechargeable battery driving a powerful electric motor got the vote. The second decision encapsulated today’s media market scene in perfect microcosm: the black inkjet head on my desktop printer had begun to fail. It seemed initially the ink had run out; so I installed a new black cartridge. But it quickly became obvious this wasn’t the solution and a veritable Pandora’s box of questions immediately sprung forth. Do I replace the printer with a new one, and if so what model should I chose; what criteria do I require to make a sensible choice and so on? The questions didn’t filter down to: “was one type of printer better than another” as all choices seemed ‘fit for purpose’. The stumbling point in the decision making process was one all

of us face who work in print and media distribution. Not only are our business needs changing constantly, so are the methods available to actually carry out the tasks we set ourselves. Producing photo books takes up a great deal of the time, which I once devoted to writing lengthy and many would say over wordy articles. What is now relevant for most of us involved in print production of any kind is not so much the print process, but the type of ink, toner or imaging system used to create the print and how the media being processed is converted to the final product. I have been in the print industry for around 50 years and so I had a good knowledge of what I was after when my print head failed. I wanted inks that were lightfast with good colour acuity, dried quickly and were consistent from cartridge to cartridge. LED cured UV based inks certainly present considerable advantages in a wide range of applications, particularly work requiring inline finishing and converting across a wide range of materials. LED inks, in my particular case, would have been an overkill solution; so I didn’t consider it, but what if it could have done – where would I have gone to get unbiased, well-balanced and rational advice?

Obviously a manufacturer and supplier would be an early port of call, but how do you solve the dilemma of whether the advice provided is free from prejudice or self interest. Articles in trade magazines like ME Printer clearly have a role to play and national industry federations such as the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) or its German equivalent (BVDM) could be another port of call, but there always seems to be some crucial element missing when it comes to making a major new investment decision. This crucial element is how to easily locate comparative performance data, independently compiled, diverse in its style and in an accessible structure. The car emission scandal demonstrated how good data retrieval was used for bad ends but its existence at least was there; however, print data while available is often fragmented. Perhaps management information systems (MIS) providers could pool meaningful and useful data and offer access available for all. Also, the various national bodies may have a role to play in creating an overriding umbrella organisation to compile such data. Surely the industry would benefit over all with this new openness approach. After all if you measure something, you can improve on it.

Accurate, repeatable colour makes all the difference As advances in ink and media technology make new print products possible, getting colour right is critical to being able to exploit the opportunities By Hendrik Verbrugghe, Marketing Director, Canon Middle East and Canon Central and North Africa make new print products possible, getting colour right whatever the specification is critical to being able to exploit the opportunities. Under the circumstances, it’s no surprise that colourmanaged workflow features prominently in PSPs’ investment plans. There is, however, another factor in the consistent colour equation — the performance of the digital print engine itself. You can’t just leave everything to the colour management software. Yet when it comes to investing in a new press too many PSPs pay too little attention to the engine’s contribution. “How repeatable is the device?” closely followed by “And how does it do it?” are questions that should be right up there with “How fast is the press?” While some PSPs have previously overlooked the importance of consistent colour, the same cannot be said of digital press manufacturers, who have been concentrating their engineering efforts in this area for some time. A close examination of the latest presses reveals a host of incremental refinements designed solely with this in mind. In developing the recently-launched Canon imagepress C10000VP, for example, Canon revisited three factors that are critical to delivering repeatable colour: the composition of the toner; how a consistent supply of toner and developer is delivered to the fusing station; and on-press monitoring and adjustment of the output. In placing work, today’s print buyers regard consistent, repeatable, accurate colour print as absolutely essential. For PSPs looking ahead to their next production digital colour press, technology that delivers precise colour control should be equally non-negotiable. More than ever, good enough just isn’t good enough.

ME‌Printer October 2016

“It’s good enough colour.” Veterans of the colour repro scene in the late 1980s will remember how manufacturers and users of high-end digital prepress systems used the phrase to characterise the results obtainable from the emerging desktop colour solutions. A decade later the offset community displayed similar opinions for output from the early colour digital presses. In both cases, the implication was that the results were fine if your standards weren’t too demanding, yet in both cases the new technology on the block found a home. Advances in press design, ink technology and finishing have all contributed to the acceptance of digital as a quality process capable of handling almost all mainstream print applications. For many of these applications, especially in the high-end segment of the market, top-quality colour output alone is not enough; colour must be accurate, consistent sheet-to-sheet and repeatable job-to-job. It must also be the same whatever the print process to enable “hybrid” production. A typical example of this is printing the bulk of a catalogue offset but personalising the cover digitally; or for added visual and tactile impact a mailshot might also incorporate several paper stocks with different weights and textures. Furthermore, clients using multiple marketing channels will demand consistent colour across both print and digital devices such as smartphones and tablets. Being able to print accurate, repeatable colour impacts a PSP’s bottom line directly, for a number of reasons. There are the operational efficiencies that come from fewer jobs rejected or reprinted because of inconsistent colour, and from being able to split production between multiple output devices. As advances in ink and media technology

what counts as innovation in the printing industry

16

Dr Nicholas Hellmuth, Senior Review Editor, FLAAR Reports

When I ask people in the printing industry about innovation, they usually want to have a ten-year program for innovation, and whenever I see a publication offering predictions on what is going to happen in the next ten years, I have to either smile or laugh. There is no way to predict what’s going to happen in the printing industry in the next ten years, because innovations happen so quickly, and lot of things that start to be innovative die fairly quickly. So it’s much more realistic to talk about the next 5 years, and in reality, we’re pretty comfortable when we talk about just the coming year. The best example of innovation would be the latex technology by Hewlett Packard, which I mention because there are lots of other inks out there, but it’s a real good example. Many new inks have been introduced in the past couple of years, which seemed to have a great future, but they all failed one by one: Staedtler Lumocolor and Sepiax are two good examples. When Sepiax ink was introduced, I had great hopes. But most distributors dropped it after it turned out that it could not be used in Roland, Mimaki, Mutoh, or Epson printers without sophisticated curing systems. Printer manufacturers who make the key brands for signage decided not to build such specialized printers when they learnt that this resin ink

did not work adequately on PVC. Sepiax ink is a good case study on what doesn’t work with ink. Initially, the ink worked only on Epson DX print heads, but serious printers use Ricoh, Konica Minolta, Spectra, and Seiko print heads. Xaar has been a leader in print heads for ceramic in-line printers for several years, but most Xaar print heads are not made to handle water-based ink. Although Sepiax now works on print heads other than Epson, it is too late for this ink to be adopted by signage printers designed for billboard and building wraps. The main problem with preparing new inks is that if they’re made for Epson print heads, Epson itself has no interest in any new ink if the ink company is not willing to pay money to Epson to run their ink through Epson printers. However, most new innovative ink companies are not willing to pay Epson all of their profits. So any new ink company that comes out with an ink for an Epson print head is almost guaranteed of failure, and this has been proven year after year over the past 6 or 7 years. Two companies Eastech and Jetbest introduced totally different inks under the same name of Magic Ink. Both inks were developed for Epson print heads, and they all pretty much failed, not chemically, but in the market place. And the reason they failed is because there was no printer to make the ink work. The Staedtler Lumocolor was a great ink when it came out because it printed on all kinds of things, but no company made a printer to use Staedtler ink. Similarly, no company made a printer to use Sepiax ink. That’s why Hewlett Packard latex ink is successful, because there is a company making a printer for it. Canon’s latex-like, outdoor ink has utterly failed to be completed in three years. It is the fastest disappearing ink I’ve ever seen. So any ink company that has offered innovation and didn’t have a printer company behind it almost failed automatically. That has been the sad state of our industry.

Every time a printer has been made for Sepiax ink, the printer company has not put in effort to make that printer fully functional. Human Digital Technology, which is one of the better Chinese companies, did make a physical printer, but it pretty much didn’t work. Hence, a lot of these inks companies didn’t and their new products didn’t gain traction. European companies such as SmartColor and Bergstein which make printers for dedicated applications are good examples of how these inks can be applied. If you go to these companies and tell them what you need to print on, they will select what ink in the market place they can use. The Staedtler Lumocolor ink, which didn’t become popular, and

18

Sepiax ink which wasn’t successful, are still used by companies that make specialized printers to print on specialized material. Sepiax was sold to a consortium, and although the source of the buyer was withheld, if you look at who is working in that company, you’ll find out that is a consortium between Durst and Marabu. What they make out of Sepiax ink is hard to say, but we could assume that Durst and Marabu would change that formula and Durst will hopefully finally come out with a printer that could use Sepiax ink. If that works, that will be an example of innovation and something totally new will be available in the coming year. A new ink called Epoxy ink which was offered several years ago by a company Novus Imaging and Redwood Technologies. Like every other new ink in the market, they offered promises like the ink would do incredible things. Unfortunately, it didn’t function chemically. So, when you see such claims for new inks, you have to be very careful to notice whether the inventors get carried away and excited about their inks and make unrealistic claims without finding out how it would function outside of the demo room. And that was pretty much the case with Epoxy ink. It disappeared fairly quickly. Ink chemists are skeptical, but I personally hope that Epoxy ink can work outside an R&D lab. If it does, it can potentially surpass and bypass latex ink or at least be the prime competitor. Also, Epoxy ink could replace UV-cured ink.

UV cured inks

It’s hard to call UV-cured ink an innovative ink, but it has innovated itself over the years. Eight years ago, most ink and printer companies could not even achieve their own logo colors accurately with UVcured ink. The colors are better today. Most UV inks fail in doing yellows, greens, certain

decide to spend the money to replace them? Efi Vutek printers are good examples if LED curing. Otherwise, LED curing is primarily used in low-end Chinese printers with Epson DX5 or DX7 print heads. Within five years, Durst, Inca Digital, Gandy Digital and comparable printers will offer more options with LED curing. The primary issue with LED is curing power, currently limited to 18 watts in high-end units. Printer manufacturers would like to have 50% more curing power as soon as possible, and within five years, would like to have even more power from LED.

Stay with solvent or switch to latex?

This is a question that people ask over and over again. There is no perfect solution whether its UV ink, solvent ink, water-based ink, or latex ink. However, if latex works for you and your clients, or the material you are printing on, it is a good solution. If you need to replace your roll-to-roll solvent billboard printer, just realize that although the HP Latex 3000 is better than earlier generations, it’s the ‘first’ generation of its kind, and I’d prefer to see one more, improved generation. Despite need for improvement, Latex is still a useful option, unless in three to five years, a Japanese ink company can beat HP Latex ink in all respects or Epoxy ink finds success. Occasionally, new inks come out using the word latex. Ignore any ink branded or labeled as ‘latex’ unless it requires sophisticated curing and a special heater. Also, realize that Sepiax is not latex ink although it is sophisticated and requires special

ME‌Printer October 2016

blues, and certain reds and oranges. I must admit that the HP ink I saw in the Scitex FB700 is actually better. Fujifilm and Agfa have done a pretty good job with their inks, but most of the colors in the reds, yellows, and greens are very inaccurate in terms of rendition, so I hope that would be an innovation that will be coming in future, but it won’t come unless people recognize those colors are not adequate. Let’s hope that in the next five years, the following improvements, the following improvements can be made in UV-cured inks: (1) greens need to be really green, and not yellowish; (2) yellows need to be bright yellow and not greenish; reds need to have the full gamut of reds, not orangish or magenta. Another thing people like to pretend doesn’t happen is the need for primers with UV inks. UV ink will print on everything but it won’t stick or stay on everything. You have to be very careful about that. Fortunately, inks and primers are getting better. Keep in mind when we talk about UV ink, it’s not just one ink. Many different kinds of UV-cured ink are available for thick, rigid material, flexible material, for printers that have to handle both rigid and flexible material, thermoformable ink, and solvent UV ink. We can look forward to UV-cured ink which is more flexible for roll material and more rigid for flat material. As Latex ink slowly improves and when all Latex inks can print on rigid material, UV-cured printers will still be an industry mainstay, especially for industrial applications. UV-curing technology is changing. Mercury-arc will gradually lose market share to LED curing. But at what point does an operator or print shop manager

curing. Once you eliminate the ineligible inks that try to jump on the HP bandwagon, you are left with Mimaki, Meijet, HP, and after-market inks from Sam Ink, Jetbest, and STS Inks as the only viable inks I can accept as being eligible to be labeled as latex inks. I estimate that every year at least one new aftermarket brand will be launched. Roland and Epson are informally indicated to have latex/resin printers under development, but Epson will probably introduce its UV-cured printer first. What’s interesting about latex ink is how few companies have been successful with it. The best way to explain why other latex companies have not been successful is by understanding why HP has been successful. That is what it takes. Between 2008 and 2013, HP improved its latex concept significantly. Imagine if Epoxy, resin, and other inks had as much dedication and investment behind them. HP puts its money where its mouth is. I don’t support some of the claims made by HP for latex ink. But the fact is it’s been a commercial success and a chemical success, and the reason it’s an innovative ink is because somebody has taken the time to make a printer to run on latex ink and improve the printer construction and latex ink chemistry every year. If you are a Japanese company and simply launch a latex ink in the market along with a printer, but don’t put your money behind it, it’s going to fail. Mimaki’s latex ink has not been a successful ink, and I don’t think it’s going to be successful whatsoever. It doesn’t mean it’s a bad ink. It just means that not enough was done to make it a success. Even at SGIA 2016 in autumn this year, there was no SUV and no latex printer any more in the Mimaki booth (however the latex printer was in the Ricoh booth).

20

Meijet is another example. Like many Chinese companies, they claim everything is made in the United States, but it’s basically a Chinese development. They failed to show up at the trade shows for several years and now occasionally they are back and forth. They tried to make their latex ink print on thick and rigid materials, and now they’ve withdrawn it from the market. This indicates that either the ink didn’t work or there wasn’t a market for it, because it couldn’t compete against UV ink on flat, rigid materials.

Print heads

At a print trade show, you should not be looking for the printers first; instead, you should be looking for new inks and new print heads. Print heads are introduced certainly almost every 18–24 months. What I find out is that most print shops don’t really seem to pay too much attention to what kind of print head they have. That is unfortunate because the print head, in addition to the ink, is the most important single component inside their printer. Xaar was once a market leader in entry-level Chinese eco, mild, and solvent printers, but probably more than 50% of all entry-level brands in China have switched to Epson DX5 and DX7 print heads. Other brands have switched to Konica Minolta, a few others to Spectra and Seiko. Xaar is now dominant primarily for in-line single-pass printers for ceramic factories. Now, in 2016, Xaar is trying to get back into the Chinese entry-level print head market, but their print heads for this market are so new that it will be 2017 before we can see these new Xaar heads actually in new Chinese printers. Every time a print head manufacturer in Japan has a printer manufacturer as their distributor in China,

it severely limits people’s interest in the print head. Why would a printer manufacturer who is the main distributor want a competing manufacturer to use the print heads they distribute? This is why the use of Seiko and Ricoh print heads has stalled in China for many years. Ricoh finally named an additional distributor in Hong Kong, but that company is not widely known. So we do not yet know if they will be more open that the previous Chinese distributor in Beijing. Konica Minolta is extremely innovative, as is Ricoh. So I think if you want to look for new things, new trends, or new products, see what Ricoh is going to do. Indeed, Ricoh now in 2016 has a print head to try to replace Epson. The problem with Epson print heads is at Epson doesn’t want brands other than Epson. If you buy a printer with Epson print heads today that is not made by Epson, you face the possible problem that at anytime that Epson want to, they can cut off the supply of those print heads and you will not get replacements at reasonable cost. The end result is that the cost of Epson print heads will become double that of last year. Over the last two years the price of Epson print heads probably doubled or tripled even though there is no extra benefit or good extra features in those print heads. If Ricoh comes out with a new print head that works better than Epson and cost the same or a little bit more, that will be an incredible breakthrough in our industry. It will change literally the entire landscape, especially for entry-level Chinese printers. Mimaki was clever to switch to Ricoh print heads two years ago. As soon as Mutoh fully realizes that Epson wants to take over UV-cured and latex printer market share, they will switch print heads too. Roland, finally this year, dropped Epson ink and Epson printheads with their Roland “TrueVIS” printers. These new improved Roland printers finally use a printhead of another brand. Panasonic has recently come out with a print head that has been used in Chinese printers. Nobody talks about them. The companies that use them just use them. There is not much knowledge about them, so I don’t consider those print heads are a major breakthrough. The breakthrough will come from Ricoh. Companies like Spectra or Konica Minolta are not likely to come out with a cheap replacement for Epson. That’s not their market. They are focused on the high-end market. But now more and more Chinese printers are using the Ricoh GH2220 printhead. Memjet is an MEMS technology but thermal print head concept, and can handle only dye-based water inks currently. Hopefully, the combined efforts of Own-X, Fuji Xerox, Oce, Gongzheng, and Xante can produce a viable printer when a second-generation print head is released. I estimate by the third generation print head, the system will get even better. But in the meantime, HP PageWide technology is leading the way over Memjet. Most of the advances in print heads is in smaller picolitre drop size.

Six years ago, 80 to 90 picolitres was what you expected from a billboard printer. Since then, industrial printers have reached 14 picolitres. Now, even smaller drop sizes are becoming the norm, although you don’t need such quality for a billboard or building wrap. When you look at a billboard driving down the highway you can’t tell the difference between variations in dpi but when a sales manager goes into a print shop and inspects it, he is the one who looks at it just a couple of inches away, so the drop size is still very important. A good print head alone is not good enough. A major obstacle in advances in print head technology is the rudimentary nature of some brands of electronics and firmware. A good print head with cheap electronics means the entire system will fail, and end-users and distributors will no longer want that printer brand anymore.

Textile printing

22

In textile printing, everything is getting brighter and easier. I think the main thing going on in textile printing is pigment ink. Presently, most of the entry-level and mid-range textile printers are used for polyester. The reasons are many, but the foremost one is the easy workflow and impressive color pop. I predict that printing on cotton with pigment ink will gradually increase in popularity now that pigment ink for cotton allows brighter colors. For example, you can see remarkable colors with Kornit printers (using their special pigment ink and their unique workflow). What’s holding back textile printing is the costly workflow equipment for acid dye and reactive dye. The reason is why reactive ink and dye ink is not making a breakthrough as they promised because the workflow is too complicated. I went to a printing company that used reactive ink, and their print shop occupied a factory-like space just to handle the preprinting, printing, and post work you have to do on reactive ink. In a mom and pop print shop, you can’t have that many people working and you are not going to have that kind of space. So, they’re going to continue with solvent. Every UV and solvent printer manufacturer wants to produce a textile printer. But the majority of them have not been successful. The textile workflow is what counts the most. Reggiani (now EFI Reggiani) is a good example of a textile printer manufacturer who is successful because of a long dedicated to textile printing.

Media and substrates

Another area where there is definitely room for improvement at the moment is in the media and there is so much new innovative media coming out. When I go into a print shop and ask why they are not using

innovative media, they pretty much say they found what they like or their clients like it, and that’s pretty much all they’re going to do, but there is new media coming out and hope that will change. The obvious trend is moving towards PE from PVC. However, PE can be used best with LED-cured UV and latex printers, and not solvent ink. Greenwashing is a major problem. Calling UV-cured ink as eco-friendly is the most silly trend. Yes, LED curing does get rid of mercury arc lamps and lower electrical usage, but the chemicals in them, and most other inks, are not exactly eco-friendly. A trend I enjoy is seeing more use of innovative materials such as honeycomb sandwich board. As latex ink gradually gains market share, as UVcured ink chemistry changes, and as other new inks continue to be developed, the chemical companies that develop coatings will also be busy at work. So, even in media, there will be advances and improvements every year, just not as noticeable as new inks and dramatically improved print heads. In conclusion and summary, if you want to look at ink right now, there are now exciting inks from Sensient, Sun Chemical and other multi-national ink companies. You also want to look at print head because that’s where the action is. If you want something new and better than your competitors, learn more about the print heads and get a machine that has a good print head. And the other thing is try to look at some of the innovative media that’s coming out and if you are using textile printing, you’re probably using dispersed dye or dye sublimation, but take a look at some of the pigmented inks because there are lot of new pigmented inks coming out. So again, focus on innovations in ink, print heads, and to some degree in media.

Sublimation printing on Cotton The Subli_Cotton transfer paper developed by d.gen enables printing on natural fabrics

Andrea Negretti, managing director & COO, d.gen, at K-Print Week 2016, Korea

d.gen has introduced transfer paper printing on Cotton, Rayon and blended fabrics. Subli_Cotton enables cotton sublimation to be done by the same printer and calendar used for polyester and other synthetic fabrics. First, the fabric is placed on the heat press plate; then, the Subli_Cotton paper is placed on the fabric to allow its rough side to touch the fabric. Subsequently, the printed transfer paper is placed on the soft side of the Subli_Cotton. By adjusting the paper well, and setting the

temperature of the heat press to a recommended level of 190°C for 60–90s, designs can be printed on cotton fabric. Subli_Cotton is available in various weights–30, 40, 50, and 80gsm–for woven and knit fabrics, and it works with printers used for transfer paper printing and equipped with Epson, Ricoh and Kyocera print heads. Its water repellency enables applications in printing on sportswear, t-shirts, hand bags, curtains, sofa and cushion covers, blinders, wall covers, shoes, and tents. Andrea Negretti, managing director & COO, d.gen, explains: “d.gen continues to invest in both direct-to-textile and transfer technologies, offering versatile and affordable solutions. Paper is a cheap substrate which prints and stores textile designs and then transfers them to fabrics using heat presses and calendars. Subli_Cotton offers an easy and affordable way to print on cotton by using an inkjet printer and heat transfer calendar machine. Raw cotton fabrics without B/W treatment and coloured fabrics, even black colour fabrics, can be sublimated with great colours, and fabrics will have water repellency automatically. Accordingly, they can be applied to products such as sneakers, eco-bags, parasols, etc. Mass production is possible with roll-to-roll configuration.”

Toyo Ink has developed Flash Dry LPC EX for ozone-free curing systems and the Flash Dry LED EX for LED-UV curing systems

26

Toyo Ink has developed two new series of lowenergy, UV-curable offset inks under its Flash Dry brand: the Flash Dry LPC EX for ozone-free curing systems and the Flash Dry LED EX for LED-UV curing systems. According to the company, both product series realize an expanded colour gamut, high transparency and high gloss compared with conventional UV inks, making possible a level of colour reproduction comparable to oil-based inks. These advances were achieved by Toyo Ink’s adoption of a specialty pigment and fundamental change

in pigment dispersion method. In addition, new breakthroughs in polymer-structure control technology by Toyo Ink led to the development of an ink formulation that improved emulsification while exhibiting excellent viscoelastic properties, printability and surface print quality. As a result of all these developments, UV inks are now as easy-to-handle on the shop floor as oil-based inks. “Developed under rigid field testing requirements, the two latest additions to the FLASH DRY family demonstrate our commitment and ability to deliver innovative solutions that support the needs of our customers,” says Katsumi Yamazaki, president of Toyo Ink Co. “As early pioneers in the development of UV and LED-UV curable technology, the UV ink market has emerged as a strong growth area for the Toyo Ink Group. Looking to become the leading global brand in the lowenergy UV field, we aim to increase production volume for these new ink products by 2.5 times in 2020.” With the aim of expanding demand for low energy UV inks in line with the growing industry demand for UV-curable technology, Toyo Ink installed a dedicated UV ink production line at the Fuji Plant, a facility in Japan operated by sister subsidiary Toyocolor Co. The two new products will initially be launched to the Japan market this October with a phased rollout to other regions planned for a later time.

Textile inkjet inks for interior decoration and home furnishing The SunTex Encore inks developed by Sun Chemical is offered as a multicolour ink set that combines CMYK, red, green, blue and grey The SunTex Encore range of direct print waterbased pigment inks is offered as a multi-colour ink set that combines CMYK, red, green, blue and grey to give a clean and bright colour gamut, which is attractive for pigmented textile inkjet inks. SunTex Encore also delivers adhesion to a wide range of substrates including natural and synthetic textile fabrics such as cotton, viscose, silk and poly-cottons. In addition, its wash and wet-rub resistance as well as durability to colour and light fading makes SunTex Encore particularly suited to the printing of a wide range of soft furnishings and interior décor applications. The ink benefits from the cost-efficient and flexible production capabilities of inkjet print technology, which eliminates the need for additional and complex post treatment processes. This increases output, reduces additional finishing costs and also allows for the cost effective production of bespoke or personalised applications as well as enabling smaller print runs to take advantage of changing fashion and seasonal trends. James Gould, product manager, digital aftermarket at Sun Chemical comments: “Inkjet is definitely growing in popularity for use with home furnishings and interior décor applications due to its quick turnaround times and ability to provide customised designs, trending colours and seasonal designs.”

UVgel technology for wide format roll-to-roll printing Canon claims its new print head and UV curable ink technology will address the limitations of eco-solvent and latex printing pletely independently from the printing system; (3) LED-based UV system that cures without adding any heat to the media; and (4) continuous, on-the-fly, nozzle performance compensation. The UVgel technology will feature a new UV curable ink, which, according to Canon, will provide the large colour gamut of solvent inks combined

ME‌Printer October 2016

Canon’s new UVgel printing technology incorporates several new hardware technology developments such as (1) ‘next generation’ piezoelectric print head technology employing patented acoustic sampling technology that monitors nozzle performance on-the-fly during printing; (2) LED UV curing sub-system that operates com-

Products and Applications with the environmental benefits and safety profile of latex and UV inks. Canon also claims that the new ink will gel on contact with the media, and that it’ll have the lowest ink consumption rate for up to 40% reduction in printing costs compared to eco-solvent and latex. The new technology will be at the core of a family of new roll-to-roll printing products, the first of which will be a high productivity 64” roll-to-roll printer to be released in the Spring of 2017. “The development of this new technology

evolved through close collaboration and partnership with our customers and expert resellers, and heavy investment in R&D” says Jeppe Frandsen, executive vice-president Industrial and Production Solutions, Canon Europe. “This technology addresses the limitations of eco-solvent and latex printing by enabling to jet the ink faster onto the media which increases the productivity and speed, while using less ink and still delivering an improved colour gamut. It will power an upcoming generation of roll-to-roll printers.”
