Head Coach Brooks Monaghan
Twelve seasons ago, Brooks Monaghan took over Lady Tigers soccer in hopes of taking the fifth-year program to new heights. After claiming its fifthstraight Conference USA Championship in 2011 and finishing the season ranked ninth nationally, the University of Memphis women’s soccer program is now a force to be reckoned with on a national level. Asked what his one lasting impression on the program would be and why in 2000, Monaghan responded, “I would like my student-athletes to know that I gave everything I had to make this program better. I would want the young ladies to leave here know-
ing that they not only grew as players, but also as people.” Monaghan, the 2007 and 2011 Conference USA Coach of the Year, has seen the Lady Tigers program flourish on and off the field since his tenure began back in 2000. The squad has claimed fivestraight National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Awards, the 2009 C-USA Sport Academic Award, 14 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District IV selections and four NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-Americans. Since Monaghan’s first season in 2000, the team has not posted a composite grade-point average below 3.1. The Lady Tigers have claimed five-straight C-USA Championships en route the program’s first five trips to the NCAA Tournament, 13 C-USA Player of the Year honorees, 31 All-C-USA honorees and 14 All-C-USA Freshman team selections. Under the guidance of Monaghan, the program has five All-Americans and a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winner. “The most important thing we can do as coaches is try to prepare young people for success later in life,” Monaghan said. “Soccer is important to me,

and I want to win. However, the foundation of our program is the student-athlete.” In 2011, Memphis climbed as high as third in the national polls, the highest ranking for the program. The 2011 squad surged through the non-conference schedule with a 7-0 mark and won the C-USA title with a 100-1 record. The squad advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round, suffering its lone loss of the season to stand at 181-14619 all-time entering the 2012 season. Monaghan reached the 125win plateau in 2010 with a 1-0 victory over No. 24 UCF in the C-USA Championship match. He sits at 147 career wins entering the 2012 season. A sign that a program is among the nation’s elite is its ability to win on the road, and under Monaghan’s guidance, the Lady Tigers have done just that in recent years. Monaghan has led Memphis to a 41-9-4 road mark the past six seasons, helping the Lady Tigers putting their stamp on the national soccer scene. Prior to taking the head coaching duties, Monaghan served as the goalkeeping coach for former coach Les Szabo. As the primary goalkeepers coach, Monaghan was a vital part of Szabo’s staff during the program’s first four seasons. When Monaghan became the Lady Tigers goalkeepers coach, he was already familiar with the demands of running a successful college soccer program, having enjoyed tremendous success during his playing career at Memphis. The former goalkeeper still holds school records for single-season shutouts (11) and career shutouts (24). His 298 career saves rank second all-time, and he is second in single-season goals-against average (0.80).

He was named first team All-Great Midwest Conference in 1992 after helping lead the Tigers to a share of a conference title. In 1993, Monaghan was the Defensive MVP of the league’s championship game, helping the Tigers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. His 38 wins at goalkeeper still stand as the school record. “To be a part of Memphis from so many different angles — first as a player, then as an assistant and now as a head coach — has been wonderful,” Monaghan said. “I grew up here, and I’ve always loved the city and the school. Now I get to be a part of building a winning program at my alma mater, and that’s a dream come true.”
