Memphis’ defense took control of the game in the second half, holding SMU scoreless for nearly nine minutes, and the Tigers put away the Mustangs 63-45. Will Barton led the Tigers with 24 points, the 10th time this season he scored 20 or more points, and Tarik Black posted the third double-double of his career with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Memphis trailed SMU 35-36 with 13:30 left in the game. That’s when the Tigers’ defense stiffened and held the Mustangs scoreless for the next 8:57 of the contest. Will Barton started the 23-9 game-closing run with a dunk and free throw to extend the lead to 40-36. In that run, Barton scored 13 of his 24 points.
