T h e Riv a lr y ’s T op Ga me s

(compiled by Memphis radio analyst and Tigers basketball historian Matt Dillon) February 2, 1957: Memphis beat No. 3 Louisville 8178 at Ellis Auditorium in downtown Memphis. It was the Tigers’ first win over the Cardinals after six-straight losses. The game was the catalyst to the 1957 Memphis team finishing second in the NIT and finishing the season ranked in the top-20 of the polls for the first time. The win put the Tigers program on the map nationally. All-American Win Wilfong scored 20 points for the Tigers. U of L All-American Charlie Tyra had 21 points and 12 rebounds. March 6, 1971: Louisville defeated Memphis 102-73 at Freedom Hall in the regular-season finale for both teams. Al Vilcheck and Mike Lawhon scored 19 points apiece for U of L, but the Tigers’ James Douglas led all scorers with a game high 22. A sidebar to the game was an ugly first-half altercation between Louisville’s Mike Lawhon and the Tigers’ Fred Horton. After words between the two players, Lawhon struck Horton in the back of the head going up court and a fight involving several players ensued. An incensed Horton picked up a metal folding chair and ran toward Lawhon swinging it over his head. Memphis assistant coach Wayne Yates raced to grab Horton near mid-court before security guards and police helped shove Horton to the Memphis bench. Horton was handcuffed by a security guard, but went back onto the court before being ejected and removed from the bench area. The incident was the second in two seasons between the rivals and was a continuation of a feud that began in the season finale the year before (1969-70) in Memphis. In that 1969-70 season finale, Louisville’s Al Vilcheck punched Horton while leaving the court following U of L’s 83-82 win at the Mid-South Coliseum and then ran into the dressing room. The sucker punch opened a cut on Horton’s right eyebrow and set the stage for Horton’s retaliation a year later. March 11, 1972: Fourth-ranked Louisville beat the 11th-ranked Tigers 83-72 in a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Playoff game – a game that made the rivalry even more intense. Despite defeating U of L twice in the regular season and sharing the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title, the MVC office called for a playoff game between the Tigers and Cardinals to be held at Memorial Gym on the Vanderbilt campus. Louisville took a 37-35 lead at the intermission on a half court shot by Jim Price. Six U of L players were led into double figures by Henry Bacon’s 16 points. Don Holcombe had a double-double for the Tigers (gamehigh 21 points and 15 rebounds), while Larry Finch tossed in 18. The Tigers’ loss put them into the NIT, and Louisville got the Missouri Valley’s automatic bid into the NCAA. March 7, 1982: The thirteenth-ranked Tigers beat Louisville 73-62 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game. All-American Keith Lee posted a double-double of 27 points-15 rebounds and was named Tournament MVP. Wiley Smith’s 17 points led the U of L. It was Memphis’ first conference tournament title since winning Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament in 1929.

March 8, 1987: The Tigers, under first-year head coach Larry Finch, beat Louisville for third time in the 198687 season in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game at Freedom Hall 75-52. It was also the second time for Memphis to beat Louisville at Freedom Hall during the 1986-87 season. The loss was U of L’s only Metro Conference Tournament championship game defeat on its home court in Metro Conference history. U of L, the defending national champion, ended the season with an 18-14 record and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Despite winning the Metro title, Memphis was on probation and ineligible for postseason play. As a result, for the only time in its history, the Metro Conference had no teams in the NCAA Tournament field. The 23-point win was the Tigers’ largest versus Louisville in the series. The Tigers Marvin Alexander, the Metro Conference Tournament MVP, scored 18 points. Herbert Crook scored 14 for U of L. Sophomore Pervis Ellison, the 1986 Final Four MVP, was held to only 3 points. February 20, 1989: The Tigers defeated 10th-ranked Louisville in Freedom Hall. Memphis jumped out to a 24-0 lead with 13:11 in the first half. Louisville made a run and pulled to within two points at 66-64 at the 2:17 mark of the second half, but Memphis held on for a 72-67 upset. Elliot Perry scored 25 points to lead the Tigers, and Pervis Ellison had a double-double of 23 points and 19 rebounds for Louisville. February 19, 2003: The Tigers beat 4th-ranked Louisville in Freedom Hall in John Calipari’s first U of M coaching appearance on the Cardinals’ homecourt. Antonio Burks led five Tigers in double figures with 16, and Chris Massie added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reece Gaines led Louisville with 19 points. It was Memphis’ first win over a top-five ranked team since beating 3rd-ranked Michigan in 73-72 in the 1996 Rainbow Classic. March 12, 2005: No. 6 Louisville edged the Tigers 75-74 in the championship game of the Conference USA Tournament. It was the second time the Cardinals defeated the Tigers at the new FedExForum during the 2004-05 season. With Louisville leading 75-73 in the final seconds, Tigers guard Darius Washington Jr. was fouled by the Cardinals on a three-point attempt at the buzzer. Washington hit the first free throw, but missed the next two and crumbled to the floor at the free throw line as Louisville claimed the Conference USA Tournament title. Francisco Garcia paced the winning Cardinals with 19 points, and Darius Washington Jr. had 20 for the Tigers. The loss left the U of M with a 19-15 regular season record and denied the Tigers an NCAA Tournament berth. Memphis went on to appear in the NIT Final Four in New York, while Louisville reached the NCAA Final Four in St. Louis.

HALL TO SUIT UP FOR TIGERS • Junior Ferrakohn Hall makes his debut in a Tigers’ uniform Saturday when Memphis plays at Louisville. • The 6-foot-8 forward, who played prep basketball for White Station High School in Memphis, transferred midseason in 2010-11 from Seton Hall University. • Hall has been practicing with the Tigers the past two semesters.

HEY, I KNOW THEM! • One Tiger enters Saturday’s game a little more familiar with Louisville than the rest of his teammates and coaches. • Junior Ferrakohn Hall, who is making his debut for Memphis Saturday, was on the 2009-10 Seton Hall squad that defeated Louisville 80-77 on Jan. 21, 2010. • Hall played limited minutes in that game and grabbed one rebound. CARMOUCHE TO RETURN SATURDAY • Senior Charles Carmouche returns to the court Saturday versus Louisville. • The 6-foot-3 guard has missed the last four games due to what head coach Josh Pastner called an “internal matter.” • After returning from Maui Nov. 24, Carmouche was suspended from practice and games. • On Nov. 30, Carmouche returned to practice. • Prior to the suspension, he started the first four games and averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 rebounds. STEPHENS POSSIBLY OUT FOR SEASON • Head coach Josh Pastner announced Dec. 14 that junior D.J. Stephens is suffering from knee pain and may miss the remainder of the season. • The 6-foot-5 forward/guard has played in four games and averaged 1.3 points and 1.0 rebounds. ARE TIGERS BACK IN BLACK? • Tiger Nation sure hopes so in terms of Tarik Black returning to the kind of play he gave the team a year ago. • The 6-foot-8 forward missed the latter part of preseason drills with a minor leg injury, and in turn, was part of the reason why the All-Conference USA preseason selection got off to a slow start in 2011-12.

2012 Tigers Hoops Signees Damien Wilson 6-6/190 Mableton, Ga./Oak Hill Academy

Shaq Goodwin 6-8/230 Decatur, Ga./Southwest DeKalb

A lefty that likes to slash in the lane to get his buckets, Wilson led his Oak Hill team last December with 20 points in an 80-59 win over Melrose, which featured current Tiger Adonis Thomas. Oak Hill finished the season with a 31-4 record while Wilson, a former Mableton (Ga.) Pebblebrook High standout, averaged 12 points per game. Wilson is rated as the No. 18 shooting guard and No. 90 overall prospect by Yahoo! and Rivals Sports. Scout ranks him as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 21 overall small forward. Max Preps ranks him as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Virginia and the No. 23 overall recruit.

Goodwin helped lead Southwest DeKalb High School to a 24-6 record in 2010-11 before losing 70-53 to Rockdayle County in the Class AAAA Georgia State Championship game. Goodwin averaged a double-double of 18 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season at Southwest DeKalb while shooting over 70 percent from the floor. He also averaged 3.2 blocks per contest. Goodwin’s best performance came in a playoff win over Lakeside in which he scored 41 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Game #9: BHOF Shootout • Memphis vs. Louisville • Page 8 THE VALUE OF THE ASSIST • Early this season, the Tigers stat line has shown that, when they share the ball, it results in wins. • In four games this year (three wins), Memphis assisted on 50 percent or higher of its made baskets. • Memphis had 20 assists/34 made baskets (58.8 percent) versus Belmont, 13 assists/26 baskets

“What A Difference A Year Makes” By The Numbers Last year, the Tigers had one of the most inexperienced teams in college basketball, and the numbers entering the season revealed that. Well, a year later, the tune has changed with the numbers showing Memphis returning a lot of experience in 2011-12.

2011-12 Numbers

557:

Total number of games played at NCAA Division I level 235: Total number of games started at NCAA Division I level 97.9: Percentage of assists returning from 2010-11 95.6: Percentage of steals returning from 2010-11 89.0: Percentage of minutes played returning from 2010-11 88.3: Percentage of points scored returning from 2010-11 85.5: Percentage of rebounds returning from 2010-11 80.9: Percentage of blocked shots returning from 2010-11

2010-11 Numbers

254:

Total number of games played at NCAA Division I level 91: Total number of games started at NCAA Division I level 65.9: Percentage of blocked shots returning from 2009-10 41.8: Percentage of rebounds returning from 2009-10 33.7: Percentage of points scored returning from 2009-10 28.3: Percentage of steals returning from 2009-10 15.8: Percentage of assists returning from 2009-10

(50 pct.) versus Jackson State, 23 assists/32 baskets (71.9 pct.) versus Austin Peay and 15 assists/25 baskets (60 pct.) versus Murray State. • Last year, the Tigers had 16 games in which they earned assists on over half of their field goals made (min. 25 made FG in the game). Memphis had a 13-3 record in those games.

Tigers Going “Retro”

IT’S RAINING THREES • The Tigers hit 15 three-pointers in their win over Austin Peay Dec. 3. • The 15 treys made are tied for the second-most in a single game in school history. • The 15 three-pointers were one shy of tying the school record, which was 16 versus Marquette on Feb. 14, 2004. • The Tigers is second Conference USA in threepoint field goal percentage at 38.9 percent. WILLIAMS HIRED TO ASSISTANT COACH POSITION • Jimmy Williams, who has been training both college and high school players since 2007, was hired as an assistant, head coach Josh Pastner announced Dec. 3. Williams’ recommendation was approved of the University and Tennessee State Board of Regents Dec. 7. • In his most recent position, Williams has been training players by himself and also has worked with players at the prestigious John Lucas Camp in Houston. • A well-respected coach with expertise in big man development, Williams has coached 36 players that went on to the National Basketball Association (NBA), including 15 first-round draft picks. Notables that Williams coached during his career include Dave Winfield, Mychal Thompson, Kevin McHale and Kevin Garnett. • In his most recent collegiate coaching stint, Williams helped direct the Cowboys to a 6536 record and three-straight postseasons (2005 NCAA, 2006 and 2007 NIT) from 2004-07. • The 2004-05 Oklahoma State squad went 267, won the Big 12 Conference Tournament and earned the league’s NCAA Tournament automatic bid. • The Cowboys, coming off a 2004 NCAA Final Four appearance, advanced to the 2005 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen in Chicago, where they dropped a heart-breaking 79-78 loss to Lute Olson’s Arizona team. Josh Pastner (assistant coach) and Jack Murphy (video/recruiting coordinator) served on Olson’s staff that season. GOOD “FROSH” START FOR THOMAS • After a slow start, freshman Adonis Thomas settled in and had a solid performance in the Tigers’ season-opener versus Belmont Nov. 15. • Thomas finished with 12 points, three boards and one block in 20 minutes. He hit 5-of-9 FG, 1-of-2 treys and 1-of-2 FT. • The following shows other recent freshman “first-game” performances in Tigers history:

• As a part of the University of Memphis’ Centennial celebration (1912-2012), the Tigers unveiled their “retro” uniforms in the Nov. 15 season-opening win over Belmont. • The “retro” uniforms are replicas of the ones worn by the 1972-73 Tigers squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament championship game.
