The Voice of Protest, otherwise known as Bob Dylan brings you his first exhibition of iron works Mood Swings.

As I walked into the gallery, greeted with a glass of bubbly, I was faced with one of Bob Dylan’s iron gates. Constructed from just a few tools and the scrap metal found in junk-yards, it feels as if they have come out of the blue. But for Bob Dylan, this is something that has been present his whole life.

I’ve been around iron all my life ever since I was a kid - Bob Dylan

“I was born and raised in iron ore country, where you could breathe it and smell it every day. And i’ve always worked with it in one form or another. “Gates appeal to me because of the negative space they allow. They can be closed but at the same time they allow the seasons and breezes to enter and flow. They can shut you out or shut you in. And in some ways there is no difference.” This exhibition, Mood Swings, show Bob Dylan’s iron works for the first time, alongside his original pieces on canvas. As I was observing and admiring the exhibition, still with my glass of bubbly to hand, it dawned on me that these pieces of art were created by a musical genius, and his talent goes far beyond any artist.

These iron gates which stood before me told a story, constructed away from his hectic songwriting life and more towards a personal and private one. Only Dylan will know their true meaning, but we are privileged enough to have had an insight into his life story.

When asked if Dylan’s work has a loyal clientele base, Russell said:“He has very loyal collectors from all over the world from art collectors to Bob Dylan musical fans, and his list of admirers and buyers is growing all the time.”

We all know how talented Dylan is as a singer-songwriter, but this was his chance to show us his talent in other forms, which has proven to be quite outstanding. For more about Bob Dylan’s artwork and exhibitions visit Halcyon Gallery

Being known as a painter, draughtsman, sculptor and foremost a musician, he is a man of many talents. When asking the managing director of Halcyon Gallery, Russell Green, what his favourite Bob Dylan piece is, he said, “I like the double door gates as I like his meaning behind them. The gates can be very welcoming, like opening or even closing a chapter. They welcome in the seasons and also make you think about the past, present and future.”

His artwork is globally timeless, appealing to people from all over the world.

THE CONTROVERSIAL METER HOVER OVER THEIR FACES FOR SOME TRULY OFFENSIVE JOKES

IS COMEDY TOO OFFENSIVE?

Managing the audience perfectly, Jimmy Carr has the crowd melting with uncontrollable laughter. His encore of offensive jokes sums up where British comedy is at, a place where sexism and racism go hand in hand to create the ultimate gag. Is it right to laugh at such delicate matters? Or are we becoming a nation of politically correct freaks?

MATT WILLETTS COMEDY BOOKER AUDIO INTERVIEW

YES

KIERON WILLIAMS STAND-UP COMIC

These days people are easy to offend, which makes my job that little bit harder. As a comedian, I struggle finding the boundaries for my jokes and the all important lines not to cross. But would I want to offend someone for the sake of a self-gratifying round of applause? No. Believe me, writing an entire set of controversial jokes is a lot easier than creating one joke that will not offend. In my opinion, the likes of Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle are taking the easy way out. Yes, they have their own awkward style that a lot of Writing an entire set of people like - both having sell out tours and TV shows - but are they controversial jokes is a lot that successful compared to their easier than creating one joke that less offensive contemporaries? Take will not offend” the likes of Peter Kay and Lee Evans; their observational style has universal appeal simply because they don’t cross the offensive line.

So is this type of stand-up right? If it offends people then no. Comedy is about making the crowds forget their problems through laughter, not make them concentrate on their woes even more.

UP AND COMING BRENT MORIN Considerably good looking for a comedian, Brent Morin seems like an unlikely candidate for a successful stand-up comic. Self-deprecating and unbelievably manic on stage, Morin’s comedy revolves around his turbulent tales during his time on the dating scene. Catch him at his funniest as a guest panellist on the E channel’s Chelsea Lately.

NO

RON BUNCHES With a sweet, mesmerizing voice Ron Bunches artfully hits the punch line with his clearly purposeful performances. His routine is brilliantly varied, from observational comedy about a confusing neck tattoo to a more personal tone talking about his autistic son.

RICHARD INVERNE UNIVERSITY COMEDY LECTURER

I think controversial comedy has a place in British comedy. Personally, I feel it’s great that any comedian can push the boundaries, just as long as it doesn’t go too far. Once you get into racist comedy, I certainly don’t approve.

CAMERON ESPOSITO Cameron Esposito is different to the other female comics on the block. Firstly, she’s a lesbian which is the subject matter of the majority of her jokes. But what makes her stand out is the way she tells them, using an interesting concoction of badass rebel and a hint of cute naivety.

So when I say pushing the boundaries, I don’t mean that sort of comedy as it can be quite offensive. When talking about comedians getting into trouble I think they should push the limits – despite the consequences just as long as it’s thoughtful and not just done for the sake of it. I don’t really like comedians who “I think it’s great that any trade on bad language, that’s not me just being prissy and old comedian can push the boundaries, fashioned - let’s just say I use a just as long as it doesn’t fair amount of bad language myself go too far.” - but I just think it’s not funny and not very intelligent. It’s very easy to get up on stage and say “f*** this and that” to get a cheap laugh, but to be honest it’s just not that funny. Comedy, however, does need stand-ups that will cross the line, if they didn’t the comedy circuits would be very dull indeed.

FESTIVAL JUNKIE

Most people steer far away from music festivals because of the mud, pop-up tents and the holes in the ground masquerading as loos. But 27-year-old John Corney, customer service advisor from Gosport says, "Spending five days in a field with a large group of mates and a unlimited supply of booze and brilliant music - what’s not to love?”

Our Self-Confessed Junkies

"It makes the summer especially this year with the heat wave, it was the ideal year for me to book three festivals (Download, Reading and T in the Park) in a row," Corney adds. His most memorable music festival moment was at Download 2005 when System of a Down performed. "It was like re-living my younger teenage days." He also admits that witnessing a field of people sliding through the mud at Glastonbury is still one of his funniest festival recollections.

"Another highlight has to be a group of heavy mental fanatics at Download dressed in skimpy bikinis in the freezing cold, always a pretty sight." Dane Cobain, a 25-year-old social media specialist from Buckinghamshire has been to more festivals that he can remember, and also admits that Glastonbury is like nowhere on earth. "It is a mixture of the thrill of live music and the companionship of having your friends there, along with the people you meet at the festival. Nothing beats it.

"I imagine people also worry about how uncomfortable it might be to camp. I know a lot people that refuse to go to festivals because of the mud, toilets and lack of showers. But it’s not too bad once you get stuck in and eventually you stop caring anyway." For next year Corney plans to go to any music festival that features Rage of the Machine or the Foo Fighters. "If neither band is announced then I will have to go to the usual Download Festival. I have also been thinking about going to the one in Croatia (Ultra Croatia). Apparently the settings there are breath-taking plus the variety of music is meant to be incredible."

Your New Favourite Band

If I told you there is a type of music that, regardless of taste, everyone will jump around to you probably wouldn’t believe me

Mad Dog Mcrea - Bear Necessities

That music is by Mad Dog Mcrea and is a genre they describe as, "folk, pop, rock, jazz, bluegrass and ‘shake your ass’ music". They have been on tour across the UK throughout November and played the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury earlier this year. If you haven’t heard of them yet, you will very soon. The band members are from Plymouth, Devon and include lead singer and guitarist Michael Mathieson, plus flutes, fiddles, a banjo, drums and a bass guitar. It will make the CD that’s been playing in your car for months sound plain. We caught them as they stopped at The Talking Heads in Southampton towards the end of their tour. If you like to people-watch then this is the place to be. Men are jumping around the front wearing full-length dungarees, girls in floral dresses and boots are doing their own version of Irish dancing, and people are yelling out requests and stamping their feet throughout. This probably sounds terrifying, and not the sort of place you’d usually go with your mates for a few relaxing drinks. This is anything but. Get past the fact that you stick out like a sore thumb in your polo shirt and indigo jeans, have a few drinks (Guinness is the go-to drink for this band) and hover towards the front. You’ll very quickly get into things when you realise that everyone is dancing like no one is watching and the Jungle Book’s Bear Necessities blares out – you read that right.

what you should know They love to drink - the pint of the night is Guinness and they often pass a bottle of rum around the crowd They were awarded Best Live Act at the South West Music Awards in 2012 and scooped the Best Album of the Year award in 2011 The band was formed in 1995 and has seen around 30 members come and go since

HAPPY BUS

Tom is 27 years old from Oxford and after subtly bouncing his head at the side of the crowd, soon got into the moment and was seen

Sticking around with his friends for a drink at the end, he was saying how none of them knew what to expect from this gig. They seemed shocked by how much they enjoyed it and couldn’t stop talking about how they, "must do this more often".

This singer, song writer and acoustic musician from Portsmouth describes his music as a blend of reggae and folk. Blandford’s latest single is Catching Stars, and he has more great music and videos in the pipeline.

You can keep up with Mad Dog Mcrea via their website and you’ll be sure to catch them in a festival field near you in the summer.

How to dance in a Mad Dog Mcrea crowd

Stamp one foot and make a racket to the beat. You’ll find most people will follow suit.

If you’re too sober for that, wave your arms around. You’ll still be in full control of your pint.

Charley Macaulay

Marley Blandford

The band have plenty of stories to tell, one being about their bus that was swept away by the ocean. It was late at night after a festival in Ireland so the band parked their new, plush tour bus on a local beach. They continued to party and drink through the night unaware of the rising tide. They soon realised they were engulfed by the sea and had no option but to swim to safety, watching their beloved bus sink holding only their soaked hats.

Kick your legs up and down, usually with your arms around the shoulders of those next to you.

UP AND COMING This pop and soul singer played to a huge crowd at Bestival this summer. Macaulay recently released her album, All I Know, with music you might have heard on BBC Radio and she continues to gig along the South Coast.

The fact is if you want to hear something completely different and have a good laugh, this is probably the ideal night out.

AND COMING COMING UPUPAND COMING TO A CINEMA NEAR YOU in 2014 ROBOCOP - 7TH FEBRUARY Sticking to the plot line from the original, RoboCop tells the tale of ordinary police officer Alex Murphy (played by The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman) whose life is transformed after he’s critically injured by a car bomb. Seizing the chance, corrupt robotics firm OmniCorp restores Alex’s body by making him into a killing machine as a prototype for future police recruits. 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE - 7TH MARCH Following the events of the first film with the death of Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas after his epic battle with the Persians, the Spartans are still at the mercy of their power hungry enemies. It’s down to Admiral Themistocles (played by the muscled Sullivan Stapleton) to battle it out on the open seas to finally crush the Persian military. Co-star Johansson’s fantastic performance as the sassy ‘dime’ (New York slang for a 10/10) has Jon changing as a person to match her ‘perfect guy’ ideal. Both characters have unrealistic expectations of the relationship that were brought about by the films they watch, a modern issue for young people that Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s portrayal has nailed on the head. Julianne Moore also gives a compelling performance as a desperately depressed widow taking the same night class as Jon. A crucial part to the development of his character as well as his addiction, she teaches him (along with any male audiences with the same frame of mind) the real differences between the porn shown in videos and the act of ‘making love’. The film may address a controversial addiction issue, yet does it in a lighthearted manner that focuses on love and relationships, with plenty of hilariously funny moments throughout. Extremely raunchy, incredibly witty, and occasionally rather touching, Don Jon breaks the conventional rom com boundaries far from it’s predictable mainstream rivals.

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET - 17TH JAN Based on the autobiography of Wall Street’s most notorious stockbroker, The Wolf of Wall Street is the story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) and his easy exploitation of one of America’s most prominent institutions. Directing the frenzied adventures of stockbrokers, Martin Scorsese departs from his typical gang related themes and opts for an intellectual, high stakes fraud film.

SEX ON THE BOX There is no denying that sex on our TV screens has rocketed tremendously over the years. From the innocence of Baywatch in the 90’s to the slightly more risqué Sex and the City, it seemed that the Americans were a lot more bold when it came to featuring sex on TV. So how has Britain overtaken US Television? Throughout the noughties the act of sex televised by the media was rare to non-existent. We were much more likely to turn on our televisions at primetime to the tongue and cheek humour of My Family, a programme with enough innuendos to amuse adult viewers without the sexual content which could be deemed inappropriate to adolescent viewers.

Throughout the noughties the act of sex televised by the media was rare to non-existent.

Michael Sheen

Interview

Fast forward to 2013, and at 10 o‘clock on a Tuesday evening our television screens will be flooded with explicit images of a men engaging in sexual activity with a prostitute, whilst another man conceals himself in a wardrobe, capturing the act on a video camera. Times have undoubtedly changed. Channel 4 arguably broadcasts the most controversial sexually explicit programmes, in both its choice of dramas and documentaries. Throughout the whole of October, Channel 4 launched ‘The Campaign for Real Sex’. The aim was to explore the ways in which Britain as a nation has a distorted image of sex due to our exposure to hardcore porn. Ultimately Channel 4 hoped to educate us on ‘real sex’ without the preconceptions some may have attained through porn.

TELEVISION

UP AND COMING

Having already showcased two seasons, New Girl is set to air its third season in January 2014, with more chemistry to be seen between Jess and Nick.

1. True Blood

The best way to describe True Blood’s sex scenes is intense with Sookie and Eric finally getting it on, which was well worth the wait, when they finally hooked up for a steamy session in the snow. True Blood definitely earns its place as number one.

2. Game of Thrones

The first series of this surprisingly popular show included sex in 10/10 of the episodes shown, and faced controversy because of its illicit scenes. The blossoming friendship between Jon and Ygritte had viewers on the edge of their seat, and when they found themselves naked in a hot spring, fans were not disappointed.

This supernatural drama is considered a modern day retelling of the 1820 story ‘A legend of Sleepy Hollow’. Sleepy Hollow is currently half way through its first series broadcasted to the UK on the Universal channel.

3. Gray’s Anatomy

With nine seasons to date, this medical drama is notorious for its naughty scenes. The final season is approaching, and no one could forget the threesome between Mark, Hahn and Callie which makes it deserving of its place in the top hottest moments.

4. The Tudors

Throughout season one, the sexual desire between King Henry and Anne Boleyn (following his split from Catherine of Aragon) is solely enough to keep viewers hooked. However, season three turns up the heat more than a few notches with a unique twist on the innocent game of chess. Lady Eleanor, who happens to be Anne Boleyn’s lady in waiting, pays King Henry a visit, which results in a rather raunchy version of chess.

5. Mad Men

As the final series of Mad Men draws near, countless sexy moments can be reminisced from the past six seasons. It’s difficult to pinpoint the raunchiest scenes of this provocative series, but one of the most memorable ones appeared in series one and involved a washing machine. That’s one to watch.

Dracula, starring the steamy Jonathon Rhys Meyers premiered on Sky Living at the end of October, and will be running throughout December.

HOW ACCURATE IS

The notion of science is not what it was ten years ago. It has now become increasingly mainstream and is featured in many television shows, such as The Big Bang Theory where it’s a predominant topic. Due to the overwhelming success of Breaking Bad, which in its final episode gained an impressive viewership of over 10 million, science is now a key element in the equation for a successful television show. Look at CBS’ The Big Bang Theory - it constantly draws in a whopping audience of 19 million, which shows there's a demand for know-it-all nerds on the box. The question has to be asked though, how much of the science we see on TV is accurate? Take for instance Breaking Bad in which Walter White - the protagonist – states that "the chemistry must be respected." Walt is a Nobel Prize award winning research chemist who has to leave his prestigious studies and take up the dreary career of teaching high school chemistry. After discovering he has terminal cancer, he turns his skills to methamphetamine production in collaboration with former rebellious pupil Jesse Pinkman. According to scientists, the chemistry used in the show is fairly sound. Although, there are parts that have been changed for dramatic purposes, such as the vibrant blue shade of the meth, which in reality would be a clear substance lacking any colour.

THE WALKING DEAD (SEASON 4)

So it looks like the unlucky sheriff Rick Grimes is still battling the zombie hordes, even though the show is into its fourth series. With tonnes of blood and gore, The Walking Dead is not for the squeamish. On a mid-season break, this is the perfect time to catch up with the ultimate postapocalyptic show on the box.

DA VINCI’S DEMONS (SEASON 2) ©Hernan Seoane

The Big Bang Theory has a resident scientist working on the show who fills in the scientific gaps in the script. David Saltzberg (Professor of Physics and Astronomy at UCLA) attends the show's live taping every week at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Making sure Sheldon’s all-important calculation filled whiteboards are correct, Saltzberg is constantly checking the vital scientific joke accuracy and he even provides a few jokes himself for the script.

Shows like these deliver more than just accuracy and entertainment, they make science look ‘cool’ which is a very hard feat. More students are choosing to study physics at university and these scientific TV shows may be the reason. According to the Higher Education Funding Council for England, there was a 10% increase in the number of students accepted to read physics by the university admissions services between 2008-09, which happens to be when The Big Bang Theory was first broadcast on UK screens. Tom Hodges, a university student from Hertfordshire suggests the show has made the subject cool: “The Big Bang Theory is really entertaining and I think it’s definitely made physics more popular’. With cameo appearances from nerd idols such as Stephen Hawking and Spock himself Leonard Nimoy, these shows can go to infinity and beyond. ©Daniel Semper

Charting the early years of the genius himself Leonardo Da Vinci, the show maps the rise and falls of the struggling inventor and artist in Renaissance Florence. Da Vinci must prove to the world that science, along with religion, should also be worshiped. Already set for a second season, will Leonardo ever get his wish?

FALLING SKIES (SEASON 4)

After the world is defeated by an alien attack, a group of survivors must fight back against the monsters to once again be the supreme race on Earth. Each day proving to be a test of survival, the group must lead an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien threat if they ever want their world back. Already renewed for a fourth season, the show returns in 2014.
