Welcome Summer

We’ve never been more excited for you! After what we can only call a memorable spring, we are ready to delight in the summer sun, ice cream and drive-in movies. Michigan is bringing us one of its best seasons - and while it may look a little different this summer - we are here for it. What are we looking forward to? - Hiking a new trail with old friends (socially distanced) in the Michigan great outdoors. - Cuddling under a blanket at a drive-in movie theater while watching a summer blockbuster. - Indulging in West Michigan’s most creative ice cream concoctions. - Spending as much time outside as possible, soaking in everything a Michigan summer has to offer. At GRKIDS, we are working hard to connect you with content that lifts you up and brings you closer to your loved ones. As I write, it is still May and many uncertainties lie ahead. We hope our Summer Issue is useful as we continue to navigate these uncharted times together. Cover Photo by Marie Clark Photography | www.mclarkphotography.com

BRACE YOURSELF

3 THINGS TO LOOK FOR WHEN

CHOOSING AN ORTHODONTIST Time to look for an orthodontist? We know you want to trust your child’s teeth (and face) to someone reliable, experienced and knowledgeable, not to mention someone who has flexible payment plans for this major investment. Dr. Kevin Knapp of Knapp Orthodontics offers these three things to look for when choosing an orthodontist:

MAKE SURE THE DOCTOR IS A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTICS (AAO) Members of the AAO are dentists who have completed a 3-year residency program specializing in orthodontics. They are certified once they pass a licensing exam for each state. (Not all people who perform orthodontics work are certified in this way.)

PICK SOMEONE WHO WORKS WELL WITH YOUR FAMILY Choose an orthodontist who is pleasant, professional and informative. A good orthodontist will clearly communicate expectations to parents and make your child feel comfortable. 6

GRKIDS Family Fun Guide | Summer 2020

CHOOSE A CLEAN, MODERN AND UP-TO-DATE OFFICE Technology changes pretty quickly. However, you don’t necessarily want an orthodontist who is on the cutting edge of technology or an early adapter. Choose one that carefully researches new technology before implementing it in the office.

Call Dr. Knapp for your complimentary consultation at (616) 277-1938

"Dr. Knapp and his team

are the nicest group of people. They are truly genuine with not only their patients, but also with the parents that come in with the kids. We have been visiting with them for a year and our experience has been great!" - Amanda D.

There's no limit to what a smile can do!

CHARTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH A TWIST These schools can offer special focuses, based on students’ needs. Find fine arts, Montessori and college prep options - even balanced calendar schools! To operate, a charter public school must have an authorizing organization. This organization decides whether a new charter public school should open to meet community needs, and ensures that the schools it authorizes fulfill their mission of providing innovative education to families.

GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY IS THE AUTHORIZER FOR 78 CHARTER SCHOOLS IN MICHIGAN. If you’re exploring school choices in Michigan, a charter public school may be the perfect fit for your child, especially if it’s one of the schools under GVSU’s umbrella. To research GVSU Charter Public Schools near you, visit www.gvsu.edu/cso/.

GET TO KNOW CHARTER PUBLIC SCHOOLS Are flexible to focus on Montessori, Fine Arts and more Support Special Education Are open to all, with a lottery system for choosing students if there aren’t enough seats Educate about 10% of Michigan’s K-12 Population We know that parents have high expectations for their kids’ education, and it is our job to make sure that the schools we charter meet them. Violette came to HHC with infant reflux, which she had been experiencing since birth. She was frequently spitting up large quantities with discomfort and was not sleeping like a newborn should. After 1-2 Chiropractic adjustments, Violette was no longer a difficult, fussy baby and she is now able to keep her formula down. She is also now sleeping for longer periods of time. Mom did not realize how little Violette slept for a newborn, until after she started getting adjusted and began sleeping more, as a baby should! Mom stated, "I had no idea that reflux could be caused by nerve interference.”
