Read this month’s feature to learn how the Boy Scouts have prepared him for a lifetime of service to others. Middlebury American Legion Post 210 celebrates its 95th anniversary in October, but inMiddlebury Magazine is highlighting their service to the community this month through their continued efforts to recognize those who served. Middlebury is unique in that there is still a substantial Memorial Day observance, which is made possible through Post 210 and its members.

around TOWN | Boys & Girls Club

Off to Dallas! Middlebury Teens Attend National Conference in Dallas, Texas This spring, Middlebury teens had the amazing opportunity to attend Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Keystone Conference in Dallas, Texas. The Keystone Conference brings together Boys & Girls Club members from around the country who participate in their local Keystone Club – an after school leadership group for teens that focuses on character development, career preparation, academic success and service to community. At the Conference Four Middlebury Club teens attended this year’s conference where they were able to meet, network and learn with other teens from around the United States. “My favorite part of attending the conference was meeting new people,” said 9th grader Jacob Schaaf. “It was great to learn about other Boys & Girls clubs and what their Keystone clubs are doing.” From inspiring anti-bullying legislation to increasing access to food in low-income communities, Keystone clubs around the nation are hard at work serving their local regions. In addition to hearing about these projects, Schaaf and his fellow teens were able to attend seminars and workshops and develop skills they can apply in and out of the classroom. “At the conference, I attended seminars on fundraising, robotics and app development,” Schaaf explained. “I hope that as a team we can use what we have learned to raise the money we need to attend next year’s Keystone Conference.”

Middlebury Boys and Girls Club Keystone members (left to right) Courtney Maher, Jacob Schaaf, Bre Miller, and Julia Mumford enjoyed time at the national conference in Dallas.

National Winners But learning and meeting new people weren’t the only highlights of their trip to Dallas. While attending the conference, Middlebury teens learned they had taken 1st place in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national video contest for Keystone clubs, “Judgment Free Generation.” With their video, titled “Judgment Free,” Middlebury teens earned the most votes nationwide, earning the first-place title of “Most Recognized Video Honoree.” “We hope that people who watch our video will learn to be less judgmental of others and that those who are judged will feel better about themselves,” explained Jacob. Congratulations, Middlebury Keystone Club!

The largest one-day food drive in the country for 23 years, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has conducted an annual nationwide food drive on the second Saturday in May. Using the unparalleled postal networks, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes. It is held in 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Among the many local volunteer groups that will help are the United Way, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, National Guard units, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Boy/Girl Scouts, various student groups, Rotary Clubs and AARP groups. “Many people in this country struggle with hunger every day,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “We are honored to be able to help people in need by leading an effort that brings out the best in so many Americans. Six days a week, letter carriers see first-hand the needs in the communities where we work, and we’re committed to helping meet those needs.” For more than a decade, the drive has annually collected more than 70 million pounds of food. Over the course of its history, the food drive has collected 1.4 billion pounds of food to help feed our neighbors. Here in Middlebury, our rural carriers are assisted by “bag buddies” who drive ahead of the carriers and pick up the bags of donated food by the mailboxes. All the food donated in Middlebury is then taken to the Middlebury Food Pantry where it is weighed, sorted, and stored for distribution to families that need it here in Middlebury and the surrounding area. This year’s NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will be held on Saturday, May 14. People should have non-perishable food items by their mailboxes by 9 a.m. If there is inclement

weather, put the bag in a garbage bag and place it by the mailbox. Anyone interested in volunteering to be a “Bag Buddy” or to help weigh and sort donated items that morning should contact Cheryl Hoffman at 574-536-7570. In addition to the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the letter carriers are also appealing to neighbors for help with building renovations to Pleasant Oaks Church to house the Middlebury Food Pantry. The building currently in use is very old and becoming unsafe, and they are outgrowing it. Plans are underway to renovate Pleasant Oaks Church and move the Middlebury Food Pantry there where there is more room for storage and operations. The renovations are being done in stages, and any help is appreciated to assist them to move in sooner and to help finance the more expensive next stages. In addition to housing the food pantry in the renovated building, plans are also underway to sponsor programs there for clients of the pantry such as household budgeting classes and financial counseling, community gardening, nutritional counseling, addiction recovery programs, English as a second language, parenting classes, and others to give a hand up not just handouts! Anyone interested in donating money for the new Middlebury Food Pantry building renovation should call 574-825-5135 and leave a message or send a check made out to Middlebury Food Pantry with notation that the money is for building renovations and send to P.O. Box 508 Middlebury, IN 46540.

Suggested items to donate to the Middlebury Food Pantry include: • Tuna Fish • Canned Chicken • Macaroni and Cheese • Chicken Stuffing Mix • Cream of Mushroom Soup • Spaghetti Noodles • Spaghetti Sauce

• Brownie Mix • Cereals (oatmeal and cold cereals) • Pancake Mix • Syrup • Canned Vegetables (green beans, carrots, peas, corn, baked beans, pork & beans)

Mark L. Wilt American Legion Post 210

Celebrating 95 Years in October The American Legion was organized on March 15, 1919.

On Oct. 19, 1921, 20 local men applied for membership at Post 210 in Middlebury. Middlebury Post 210 was named in honor of Mark L. Wilt, who was killed in France on Nov. 5, 1918, six days before armistice on Nov. 11, 1918. He and his parents lived on South 7th Street in Goshen at the time of his death. If anyone knows any of Wilt’s relatives, they should contact the Middlebury Legion at 574-825-5121. The Middlebury Post met for nearly 25 years above the former Winners Circle Tavern, now 41 Degrees, on Main Street in Middlebury. The very first meetings were held above the old post office at Main and Berry streets. The Middlebury Post 12  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  MAY 2016

moved to its current location at York Drive and SR 13 in 1969. Dr. Melvin S. Teters was the first commander of Post 210 and Charles Hostetler is the 50th. The Middlebury Legion is looking for pictures of past commanders Frank Jenkins (19231924), Floyd Belt (1926-1927), and Roy Packard (1938-1939). The current commander is Doug Weaver. The Middlebury Legion has around 385 current members, representing all five branches of the military. The members support many local charities and this year donated more than $16,000 to 20 different local organizations, including scholarships. The Middlebury Legion has a horseshoe league and the hall is rented out for various events.

American Legion Post 210 Timeline 1921 – Middlebury American Legion Post 210 is formed with Melvin Teters as the first Post Commander. The Post is named after Mark L. Wilt, who was killed near the end of World War I. Early meetings and functions were held on the upper floor of the old post office, now the location of First State Bank. 1946 – The Post moves upstairs at 104 South Main Street, currently 41 Degrees Restaurant. 1968 – Post members begin raising funds for a new Post home. 1969 – Members complete construction of the current building at 103 York Drive, on property donated by Lester Christy. 1980 – The Post completes an addition to the building, adding a great hall area for meetings and events.

1983 – The Post adds a TV room, office and kitchen. The canteen area is also enlarged at this time. 1993 – The Post adds a new kitchen, restroom and storage area to the great hall. 1996 – Twelve lighted horseshoe pits are added, which are used for summer league play as well as professional tournaments. A rear parking lot and pavilion with restrooms is also added. 2011 – The Post has two art honor students from Northridge High School, Melissa Erickson and Sara Brummer, paint a 6 ft. by 13 ft. mural in the great hall. The mural includes the likeness of Mark L. Wilt as well as the emblems of all of the military branches over an American flag background.

Just inside the door of Middlebury American Legion Post 210 sits a table set in tribute for POWs and MIAs, a reminder of those who have yet to come home. Above the table is a portrait of Mark L. Wilt, the WWI solider the Middlebury Post was named in honor of.

The current home of Middlebury American Legion Post 210 on York Drive, above, was built in 1969, and has seen several additions since then.

Middlebury American Legion Post 210 had a mural painted to grace its great hall in 2011 by NHS students Melissa Erickson and Sara Brummer. The mural features a likeness of Mark L. Wilt, who died near the end of WWI.

Resident Dead Guy Photo and Story by Gloria Salavarria

S

hortly after I moved to Middlebury, I stopped off at the Middlebury Police Department to find out if I needed to purchase a bicycle license and while I waited at the window, an officer came through the foyer and said, “Hi, Joe!” Needless to say I thought that was strange because I was the only one in the room and my name wasn’t Joe. Maybe he was calling out to someone in the office. Maybe it’s a password before entering the door that separates the police from those they are sworn to protect and serve.

Next they called the widow and asked her what she wanted done with Joe’s remains. She told him that she had disposed of him and that’s final. What happens to his remains from now on was not her concern. Meanwhile the daughter called again and complained that she still could see Joe on her baby’s gravesite so this time the Middlebury police took a shovel and removed an inch of soil off the top. The fiberboard container just got heavier.

The only items in the foyer beside myself were the chair I was sitting in, an ashtray and a squat fiberboard container in the corner – the kind we Midwesterners use for keeping a handy supply of rock salt for deicing the sidewalk.

So Joe sat in the corner of the Middlebury Police Department foyer as the years went by and the statute of limitations ran out on the widow’s right to reclaim the remains.

It wasn’t until eight years later that I learned that container held not rock salt but a dead guy named “Joe” – along with several yards of dirt.

Finally, at a town council meeting Mike O’Reilly, a former Middlebury police officer and member of the local American Legion, announced they would just bury Joe “at sea.”

Dead guys usually don’t hang out at the local police department, but I’ve since learned that anything can happen in Middlebury.

At sea?

Joe’s wife decided to dispose of his cremated remains by pouring him all over the grave of her daughter’s dead baby. Her daughter took exception to that and called the Middlebury Police Department and filed a complaint. So a Middlebury police officer took a fiberboard drum over to Grace Lawn Cemetery and raked and shoveled Joe into Middlebury history.

Well – the Legionnaires poured Joe’s cremains and several yards of Middlebury cemetery dirt off the trestle bridge into the Little Elkhart River. By now Joe should be cruising through Elkhart and on his way to South Bend – headed for Lake Michigan. In another couple of thousand years he should make his way down to St. Lawrence to the North Atlantic. Bon voyage, Joe!

Leadership Leads to

Eagle Scout Honor by Guy Thompson

Colton Cawood’s Eagle Scout service project is a foundation. “I wanted to create something that can propel other scouts forward,” Cawood said about the project that will allow scouts and other groups to utilize part of Riverbend Park. The Northridge High School senior earned his Eagle Scout rank this past year, and had his Court of Honor Ceremony on March 6. The nearly year-long endeavor was the culmination of seven years of scouting. Cawood began as a Webelo Scout in 4th grade, a two-year program that prepares members for Boy Scouts. Cawood, the son of Brendon and Nicole Cawood, is part of Troop 007.

Service Project Once in the Boy Scouts, Cawood “wasn’t going to quit. If you’re going to do something, you finish it,” he said. That meant aiming for Eagle Scout. Among the many requirements to earn the rank (see sidebar), the most recognized is the service project. Often, this entails building something for the community. Cawood wanted to look further than just something that could be used by others; but rather something that others could build on. Cawood approached the Middlebury Parks Department to look at putting a youth campground at Riverbend Park. “I looked at Riverbend because the land was under-utilized,” Cawood stated. He began by approaching the Middlebury Cawood enlisted the help of other volunteers to work on clearing out an area in Riverbend Park.

Colton Cawood earned 47 badges in all on his way to earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Town Council and parks department to get them on board with the idea, who easily agreed with the plan. Cawood then looked at a site, with the initial idea to place the site near the vet clinic on the east side of the park. However, that location ended up being on private property, so he started over and worked with Middlebury Parks Superintendent Tom Enright to select a site on the southwest portion of the park. He then gathered other Scouts and adults to work on clearing out the location and forming a campsite. “We’re still working on it,” he said, with the goal to have it fully functioning by this June. Once completed, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church groups and other organizations can contact the parks department to sign up to use the campsite. The idea is that this will allow them to hold camping activities without the need to travel very far. Future Boy Scouts and those working on Eagle Scout service projects can also utilize the area to add to it, Cawood said. MAY 2016  |  inMiddlebury

A clearing in the woods takes shape, above, in what became an area for scouts and other groups to utilize for years to come. Right, even larger logs didn’t pose an issue with the help of volunteers Eagle Scout Colton Cawood had to help complete his service project.

Leadership

The Badges

The idea behind becoming an Eagle Scout is more than just a finished service project that will benefit others. The process is designed to prepare the scout for more in life than building something. It is designed to build a leader, something Cawood has embraced since his start in the scouting program. By the 8th grade, he was the assistant senior patrol leader, an elected post in the troop that helps run the meetings and other duties.

Similar to the service project idea behind the Eagle Scout rank, most outside of scouting see the group to be mostly about camping, which is only a part of the experience. One of the longer-lasting aspects of the organization is through the badges scouts earn. To reach the rank of Eagle Scout, Cawood needed 12 required badges and nine elective badges. Cawood had those and more as he set out to achieve the highest rank. By the time the Honor Court was held, Cawood had 47 badges.

“It’s an opportunity to lead kids my age,” Cawood noted. “I get to have that experience and not just be in the background.” The position had him working on troop events and conducting the meetings. After serving as the assistant leader, Cawood became the senior patrol leader. That role was both rewarding and challenging, as he would need to work out situations with others in the troop to keep the group moving ahead.

The badges are ways to explore not only scouting, but potential careers. One Cawood was interested in earning was the law merit badge. To earn it, he had to look at court procedures, the history of law, and even hosted a mock trial. “There was a lot of bookwork, too,” Cawood said. He even taught a session on law merit badge at the scouts’ summer camp in Jones, Michigan.

Eagle Scout Requirements • Be active in the troop for a period of at least six months after achieving the rank of Life Scout. • The Scout must demonstrate that he lives by the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law in his daily life. The Eagle Scout Rank Application includes the names of individuals who know the Scout personally and would be willing to provide a recommendation.

Cawood also gravitated toward the first aid merit badge. “I found it to be extremely interesting,” he said. “Instead of standing there, I know what needs to be done.” At the summer camp, while taking a course for the first aid badge, the director thought Cawood would be a good fit to join the camp staff. He has spent six weeks in the summer teaching other scouts, with a different troop each week. This summer, he’ll return as an area director for the Eagles and Beyond area. Cawood also had a taste of government leadership as he was chosen last year by Middlebury American Legion Post 210 to attend Indiana Boys’ State. The event, held at Trine University in Angola, replicates state government for the week, with attendees running for election or seeking appointments in various levels of the government. He initially ran for circuit court judge, but was later appointed as a supreme court justice at Boys’ State. He also worked with the elected “governor” on speeches.

The Future The experiences he has had through the Boy Scouts has led him toward his future. He is preparing to attend Indiana University in Bloomington in the fall, and has been accepted to the Media Learning Center there. His main goal is to be a judge. He has also been an inspiration to his younger brother, Landon, who is already a 1st Class Scout. When asked if Landon is interested in becoming an Eagle Scout, “He better be,” Cawood answered. But for years after he has left the Boy Scout troop and uniform behind, what Cawood has created in Riverbend Park will be there. “I want to see how it grows,” he said. “It’s a legacy and it can grow and become a major part of Riverbend Park.”

• Earn a total of 21 merit badges (10 more than the Scout already has), including the following: First Aid, Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Communication, Cooking, Personal Fitness, Emergency Preparedness OR Lifesaving, Environmental Science OR Sustainability, Personal Management, Swimming OR Hiking OR Cycling, Camping, and Family Life. • While a Life Scout, serve actively in the unit for a period of six months in one or more of the following positions of responsibility: Patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, senior patrol leader, Venture patrol leader, troop guide, Order of the Arrow troop representative, den chief, scribe, librarian, historian, quartermaster, junior assistant Scoutmaster, chaplain aide, instructor, webmaster, or Leave No Trace trainer. • While a Life Scout, plan, develop, and give leadership to others in a service project helpful to any religious institution, any school, or his community. The project must benefit an organization other than Boy Scouting. A project proposal must be approved by the organization benefiting from the effort, the Scout’s unit leader and unit committee, and the council or district before starting. • Take part in a unit leader conference. • Successfully complete an Eagle Scout board of review. This includes a statement of the Scout’s ambitions and life purpose and a listing of positions held in religious institution, school, camp, community, or other organizations, during which the Scout demonstrated leadership skills. This also includes honors and awards received during this service. MAY 2016  |  inMiddlebury

The Return of the

Bald Eagles

Have you been hearing more reports of bald eagles in Elkhart County?

by Dr. Carla Gull LaGrange and St. Joseph counties on either side of us have confirmed bald eagle nests. Closer to home, people have reported nesting behaviors near the Goshen Dam and north of the St. Joseph River in Elkhart, with birders confirming a nest at the Elkhart location. Residents in Bristol and Middlebury also report bald eagle sightings regularly. It’s nesting season for bald eagles. While we haven’t seen many nests in Elkhart County yet, we can watch nests online. We’re continually checking the progress of the Washington, D.C. bald eagle nest after a friend shared that an egg was just about to crack. With technology, we can have constant updates of the progress of the chicks. Tweets and posts alert us to changes in the nest, such as fresh meat or new behaviors of the chicks. Chats are available to interact with experts on the topic and ask questions. What was once something you might observe from afar, we can now shift camera views to get the best view of the eaglets. Local elementary classrooms even have the eagles on during the day at school. Our family also checks other nest cams, such as the larger babies at Berry College in Georgia. We know our babies in Washington, D.C. will have similar activities five weeks later. 20  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  MAY 2016

In 1782, bald eagles were chosen as the symbol of our nation, nesting across the country. By the 1890s, eagles were not nesting in the state of Indiana due to decline of the wetland habitat. The eagle population also declined with further issues in the 1950s and 1960s due to toxic pesticides making their way up the food chain. Eaglets were introduced to the Lake Monroe area in 1985. After the reintroduction efforts, nests produced three young in 1991, almost 100 years after the last successful nesting in the state. Today there are around 300 nests in Indiana, with Elkhart County joining the hosts sites once again. Making Life Better

Parks Events by the Middlebury Park Board

Summer Fun Day Camp The Summer Fun Day Camp is a free program offered by the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Middlebury, Jefferson and York townships. Children ages 5-12 living in these three townships are eligible for the camp. Summer Fun is held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Riverbend Park, 511 E. Warren St. The dates are from June 13 through July 22 with the week of July 4-8 off. The children will have planned daily activities and take field trips to local attractions. The camp is limited to 40 people, so register soon by contacting the parks department office at 825-3283.

New Seating Area at Riverbend Park

Three new benches have been added to the concrete patio at Riverbend Park. The patio extends south of the playground and is shaded by mature trees. The patio also continues the theme of the river running from the playground, including identified animal tracks and leaf prints pressed into the concrete. This area will provide the public nice, shaded seating and a BBQ grill for picnicking while watching kids play on the playground.

Quilt Garden Design All gardens on the 2016 Quilt Gardens Tour will have a historical theme to celebrate Indiana’s Bicentennial. The Quilt Garden design at Krider Gardens is “Crossroads.” The pattern consists of various colored rectangles and triangles, much like an Indiana agricultural landscape, and a black mulched path symbolizing a road crossing through the garden landscape. Look for the garden to be planted in late May.

Jefferson Elementary

On May 23, all Jefferson Elementary students and staff will attend a field trip to Camp Amigo in Sturgis, Michigan. This is the school’s fifth year attending the trip. Older students help the younger students throughout the day – showing amazing patience and leadership! Teachers, assistants, custodians, the librarian, and any additional support staff work together to supervise groups. The kitchen staff works hard to plan and bring everything needed to serve lunch to students and staff at Camp Amigo. Groups participate in boating, fishing, nature walks, petting zoo, team games, scavenger hunt, all-school sing-along, tractor ride through the trails, and more. This trip allows many of the students to experience these things for the first time. The trip is made possible with fundraising efforts by the students along with PTO funds.
