I’d like to thank the businesses and residents of Middlebury for the opportunity to create and publish inMiddlebury Magazine for the past two years. Starting with the November magazine, I’m turning over the reins of the magazine to LaGrange Publishing, the owners of the Middlebury Independent. I’m excited about the potential for the weekly newspaper and the monthly magazine working together to provide increased coverage and opportunities for celebrating life in Middlebury. I feel I’m leaving the magazine in good hands as I start my new life journey as Director of Marketing and Communications at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. Warmest wishes, Melissa Troyer

Meet Our Middlebury Fire Inspector By Kyle Swartz Introduction by Stephanie J. Salisbury

Kyle Swartz, 32, has been in the fire service for 15 years, with eight as a nationally-registered and state-licensed paramedic. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter with the Bristol FD and has since become a certified fire investigator and is recognized as an investigator through the International Association of Arson Investigators. He lives in Bristol with his wife, Jill, and their two children. The Middlebury Fire Department started the Fire Inspection and Prevention Bureau program in response to a rapid, constantly changing community with a diversified mix of residential, industrial, mercantile, and professional occupancies. After obtaining the necessary education and testing procedures, I took over the office and began to rebuild the program. I currently do fire inspections on shift days in addition to running on the trucks as a firefighter, paramedic, and investigator.

The Goal

This program is designed as a public education program to help identify and educate on potential dangers and hazards. My goal is to be fair and understanding, working hand-in-hand with business owners, not to be the “mean fire inspector that’s going to shut you down.” I hope to see the community continue to grow while staying safe and compliant.

Construction Projects

The fire department recently purchased $10,000 worth of fire inspection software that, with a generous donation from Crystal Valley Computers, will help streamline the inspection process for all existing and new businesses. Although I am working with the county to be notified of all construction projects, they are busy. I ask new and existing business owners to contact me about any current or upcoming projects so we can review plans together, saving time and money by reducing the need to change things that may not meet code. If you have any questions regarding your current business or would just like a “check,” contact me. This goes for residents with homes as well since it is a free service. Contact Kyle via e-mail at MiddleburyFireInspectorSwartz@gmail.com or call the station at 825.1484 x207.

Long’s Convenience

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Photos by Guy Thompson

By Stephanie J. Salisbury

“Our family is from Cambodia. During the Pol Pot regime, my parents had to flee the country at a very young age and escape to the Thai border for refugees. I was a refugee baby born in a camp in Thailand. A local church in Goshen, First United Methodist Church, sponsored the three of us over in 1982. We’ve always been in this area since we came to the states. We’ve lived here longer than in Cambodia, and have embraced the American life and culture. Both my sisters were born here and we all attended the Middlebury Community School District.”   –Sopheap Long, Co-Owner of Long’s Convenience, Inc.

In September 1998, Chanty Long took over the Marathon station on US 20 across from Northridge. His daughter Sopheap was a junior in high school at the time, and the family was excited about this new venture. Chanty and his wife, Saoman, had been factory workers at Weiland Designs and he had also been working at Skyline, but Chanty had a bit of experience working as a night clerk for a convenience store and car wash in Goshen.

A Family Thing All three children – Sopheap, Veronica, and Amanda – helped work before and after school until they left for college. In 2010, Sopheap came back to step in and work with her father. Not just a place to grab fuel, snacks, drinks and lottery tickets, Long’s Convenience offers a fresh homemade food selection that includes fried rice, egg rolls, stir fry, pizza puffs, breakfast sandwiches, fresh cut potato wedges, fish, and a selection of donuts every morning. (Saoman also runs her own carry-out shop in Elkhart called Lucky’s Donuts.)

Making Friends More important than anything to the Long family is the idea of integrity and customer service. “Our patrons, over the years, have become our family and our friends,” remarks Sopheap. “You can’t come into Long’s and not expect a conversation on how life is going or 16  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  October 2015

how the family is doing. Every customer, new or old, will feel comfortable and welcome every time they stop in. Being here for over 15 years, the bond between us and our patrons has been tremendous. We go through life with these people, we watch their children grow up, we experience births and deaths with the community and rejoice and mourn together. Our store is not just a store you come into and buy an item and leave; for some, it’s coming to a second home. It’s a place you come to visit a friend.” With genuine care and respect for all their patrons, Chanty or Sopheap will call you by name when you walk through the door once they’ve met you, and often will already know what you came in for without you saying a word!

Keeping it Local “The hardest part about owning a business, in general, is the struggle to stay afloat in today’s economy,” Sopheap explained. “Costs get higher and maintenance never ends. We try our best to keep prices reasonable and, in today’s times, it’s very hard. Because this is a family business, we have been fortunate to keep some costs low but it’s still a struggle. We have wonderful support from the community and have no complaints!” With several places to fuel up and go with no interaction, it’s extremely nice to have a hometown welcome when you walk through the door. Throughout all four seasons, the courtesy and service provided by the Longs is a welcome change of pace. Winter is especially fun for those locals who know Chanty – day or night, you’ll always see him in his big, gray Russian hat!

For most children, October means one thing… Halloween candy! For orthodontists, it’s a month for celebrating National Orthodontic Health! That’s why Middlebury orthodontist Dr. Rick Burns offers patients and the entire community five timely tips to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic “appliances” while protecting teeth from decay.

1 23 4 5

Spooktacular news: Not all Halloween candy is off-limits Avoid sticky situations with your braces and aligners. Say “boo” to hard treats Brush up! Make a commitment to oral health and straight teeth.

All About Community “This community is about helping each other and looking out for each other,” Sopheap says. “The amount of support and love and loyalty we have been given is heartwarming. Middlebury has been our home for many years and will continue to be our home for many years to come.” Visit Long’s Convenience at 995 US 20 in Middlebury or call 825.9601 with any questions you might have about their hours of operation or what they have to offer. Outdoor LIVING

Story and Photos by Dr. Carla Gull

“Nocturnal animals, they come out at night!” – Banana Slug String Band

Barred owls live in the woods at Woodlawn Nature Center. While nocturnal, they can be heard at dusk and sometimes you might find one roosting along the trails during the day.

For many people, nocturnal animals are a little scary or frightening, as we often hear noises and movement at night without seeing the animals. However, understanding some characteristics of nocturnal animals can help us know what is going on once the skies grow dim. Here are a few of my favorite nocturnal animals:

Bats While many fear that bats might get tangled in their hair or suck their blood, bats in our area are very beneficial as they eat insects. Think of all those mosquitoes you don’t like in the summer…bats eat them by the thousands each night! Skunks  Known for being stinky, skunk musk is stripped of its scent to be a carrier oil in high-end perfumes. These omnivores eat fruit, insects, rodents, and plants. Skunks will stomp, hiss, and raise their tail before spraying. You’ve been warned! Owls  These silent fliers are adapted for night hunting. With huge eyes to see better, a specially-shaped face for better hearing, and fringed feathers for silent flight, owls are meant to hunt small animals at night! Foxes  The pointed nose and ears, moist nose, and other characteristics help the Red Fox sneak around at night. With a variety of food sources like berries, insects, and small mammals, foxes have found a good niche in diverse habitats. Badgers

This ferocious digger is seen in more open areas, including Middlebury. If attacked, badgers often dig a hole to escape the situation. A badger can dig as fast as 10 men! They are a “species of special concern” and protected in Indiana. Many nocturnal animals find less competition for food during the night. Others are less likely to be eaten at night. All nocturnal animals are trying to survive and have special adaptations to survive the night.

Autumn at the Club By Cristina Klotz, Program Director

Pumpkins, paint, pie, and mazes are just a few of the things in store for Boys & Girls Club members this October. Pumpkins will be the subject of the still life drawing project in the art room. Through the art program, members of all ages are invited to try a number of different techniques. At the teen center pumpkin decorating contest, pumpkins will be decorated with paint, craft materials, and other props. Once completed, members of all ages will have the opportunity to How many candy corns in the jar? Each year, staff members vote for their favorite pumpkin. have unique fall activities for members to enjoy.

PIE FACED Anyone who loves a good pie will enjoy the penny war being led by our Torch Club service group. The lucky staff members who win (or perhaps lose) the penny war will be the recipients of a pie to the face! Yum!

FALL BREAK This year, the club will be open from 10 am until 6 pm both days of fall break, allowing a respite from regular after-school programs in return for bigger field trips and unique activities. A trip to a local corn maze is currently in the works as well as plans for a giant game day, including a life-size game of Clue and a giant Jenga tournament.

PARTY TIME The month will end with the annual Halloween Party for members. This year’s party is set to take place one day during the last week of October. Members are invited to wear their costumes at the club and take part in a host of activities from spooky story time to zombie tag. The Halloween Party will start as soon as buses begin to arrive and will last through the end of the day. But the fun to be had at the Boys & Girls Club cannot be confined to a day or a party – the fun will continue every day! Members take part in the annual Halloween Party by dressing in their costumes.

She Puts the ‘Varns’ in This 128-Year-Old Store

By Tammy L. Tilley

Varns & Hoover has been part of the downtown landscape since 1887 when the store moved from Mancelona, Michigan to Middlebury. For 128 years, this hometown, locally-owned store has been serving our community as well as providing a destination point for tourists. What might be a lesser-known fact is that the person behind the store, Gerry Warstler, has her own storied past. Warstler, the “Varns” of Varns and Hoover, with her sharp mind and sparkly eyes, shares memories about the family store, her beloved town of Middlebury, and a bit of advice about how to live a good life.

Meet Gerry Warstler

She has lived through the Great Depression and World War II, and survived an airplane crash. While any one of these events might have proven to be too much stress for most people, they were part of a greater story in Warstler’s life. In her 1946 plane crash, Warstler experienced broken bones, internal bleeding, and crushed feet. “I don’t remember exactly how the crash occurred because I was unconscious for four days, but it seems the plane lost altitude and [the pilot] tried to get it going again. He couldn’t, so it just nose-dived.” Below: Clarence Varns, Clarence Hoover, and Ruth Mauck in 1938.

Sage Advice At the young age of 92, Warstler continues to live a happy and productive life, even after the passing of her beloved husband in 2013. She shares her secrets to a happy life: •  Stay in contact with the Lord. •  Keep busy. Get involved in things. Volunteer. •  Keep your mind active. Part of that mental activity, Warstler quips, is texting grandkids.

The silver lining in the cloud of surgeries and struggle to gain back her life occurred during this time when Warstler met her husband.

#LetsJayco

“Dean Warstler came into my life in 1948 after the accident, which is a long story in itself. We were married for 65 years,” she said. The Warstlers dedicated the remainder of their lives to raising their three daughters and working at Gerry’s family store, Varns & Hoover Hardware.

Varns & Hoover

When the store came from Michigan, it was then known as Wise and Varns until W.W. Wise died in 1912. Ellsworth Varns, Gerry’s grandfather, was the original co-owner. Around 1916, Clarence Hoover, Gerry’s great-uncle, and Clarence Varns, Gerry’s father, ran the store along with Ellsworth. “Back then, we sold washing machines, stoves, furnaces, tractors, and the typical hardware store items,” said Gerry. “Jack Miller and Kenneth Kauffman serviced the tractors. They were real good guys.” In the early 1970s, Carl Eash (married to Gerry’s daughter Diane), began working in the store, and he has become a familiar face to many Middlebury residents. “I don’t know what I would do without Carl,” says his mother-in-law.

Tale of Two Principals

Story and Photos by Guy Thompson

Out of the four elementary schools in the Middlebury School District, two started the 2015-2016 school year with new principals. Scott Miller is the new principal at Middlebury Elementary, while Joshua Yoder has taken over at Orchard View Elementary. Yoder wanted to work in education as a career and graduated from Goshen College before moving to Colorado shortly after getting married to teach Physical Education. “As newlyweds, we weren’t tied down,” he recalled. He was hired to teach Scott Miller, new principal at at a school in Aurora, Middlebury Elementary School Colorado, with the Rocky Mountains within sight. “I went out there without seeing the school,” he said. He was encouraged by the principal there to pursue his master’s degree in administration. He finished that program and spent a year as an intern before moving on to be an Assistant Principal at two different schools for a total of nine years. “While Colorado is beautiful, our family is here,” Yoder said. “The older our kids got, the less we were into the mountains.” His family decided to look for jobs that would bring them back to northern Indiana, close to family. Miller’s path to Middlebury Schools began later in life after working in a variety of fields, including farming. “I was trying to find my path in life,” Miller said. While coaching tennis, he felt that “Maybe this is where my calling is.” He went back to school to get a degree in Secondary Education and taught biology and chemistry at Goshen High School. Like Yoder, he continued to advance his own education, and earned his administration license. “An opportunity arose as a principal assistant,” with Goshen Schools, he said. The temporary post allowed him to try out being an administrator at the elementary level. “I loved the elementary world and working with the teachers and students,” he said. He would later move to a middle school in the PennHarrison-Madison Schools for three years. But for him, “I 24  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  October 2015

knew from that one year with the elementary that I really loved this grade level. There is a joy in their learning,” he said. When the opportunity came up for the position at Middlebury, he threw his hat in. While Miller only had to change the direction he traveled to work each day (his family is looking to move to Middlebury soon), Yoder gave up what is considered by most to be a terrific view. But it was worth it to be back near family, as well as being part of the community. “After 15 years away, there is still a lot of familiarity here. The sense of community is really nice to come back to,” he said. Yoder began working with kids while he was a teenager, coaching soccer in Nappanee. “I thought that, maybe this is something I can do,” he said. An uncle also influenced him to pursue education, he added. “I love working with students and seeing that growth.” The change to administration brought its own challenges and changes, but the passion to teach is still there. “I’ve been able to help other teachers on their journey,” he said. “That’s very rewarding.”

Joshual Yoder, new principal at Orchard View Elementary School

So far this school year, Yoder has been spending a lot of time in the classrooms, just observing, getting a feel for the school and its educators. Miller feels the school year has gotten off to a great start, too. “I can’t ask for a better staff or student body,” Miller said. “They are typical elementary kids, but the mindset at Middlebury Elementary and in Middlebury itself, is about being respectful and polite.” He had heard that the staff and students were “top notch.” And he is seeing it in the classrooms.

We fix knees. The knee is one of the hardest working joints in the body. So when something serious goes wrong, a fix often calls for help from an orthopedic physician who really knows knees. And OSMC joint specialists really know knees. In fact, about a third of the patients who come to us with muscle and joint pain are coming because of knee problems. Many of these patients are suffering from knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Some are experiencing trauma caused by a sports injury. And others are dealing with the general wear and tear of aging. Many of these conditions can be treated with non-surgical procedures and therapies. But for others, more involved procedures including surgery are called for. OSMC orthopedic surgeons are among the most talented in the Midwest, experienced in an extensive range of surgical techniques from minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures to the most advanced approaches to total joint replacement. So if you’re experiencing a knee condition that’s just not getting better, OSMC is here to help.
