Outdoor Child Story and Photos by Dr. Carla Gull

Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) encourages children to get outside through the Hoosier Outdoor Bill of Rights. IDNR lists eleven things all children, regardless of ability, should be able to experience. IDNR cites the many studies that show children who spend more time outside are “healthier, do better in school, have better social skills, a stronger self-image, and lead Check out the new water feature in Krider Gardens. more fulfilled lives.” Middlebury is a great place to explore these options. Tom Enright of Middlebury Parks Department mentioned, “Both Riverbend Park and Krider Gardens have wonderful opportunities to explore nature. The Little Elkhart River runs by both of these and is truly a gem for our community. Watch the current of the river. Middlebury Summer Fun Day Camp The Summer Fun Day Camp is a free program offered by the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department partially funded by Middlebury, Jefferson, and York Townships. Children ages 5-12 living in these three townships are eligible for the camp. Summer Fun is held Monday through Field Trip to Spray Park. Friday from 9 am - 3 pm at Riverbend Park (511 East Warren St). The dates are from June 8th through July 17th with the week of June 29th - July 3rd off. The children will have planned daily activities and take exciting field trips to local attractions. The camp is limited to 40 people, so register soon by contacting the Parks office at 825.3283.

Parks Kiosks The Middlebury Parks Department has constructed two informational kiosks to provide a new way to communicate within our community. One is on the Greenway near the pavilion, and one is in East Park near Main Street. The East Park kiosk was built in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce and the parks and the chamber will share the display areas. The kiosks will have free information available in the form of a trails pocket map, pamphlets on Middlebury parks and activities, Quilt Garden literature, and information on local and regional events. The kiosks will serve both guests and residents with a convenient source of local information and news. The kiosks are constructed from ash trees cut from Middlebury parks and milled into lumber at a local Amish sawmill.

Volunteer Day Come help beautify Krider Gardens on Saturday, May 9th from 10 am - 12 pm. Join the 8th grade Civics program as students show their support for our community by assisting the Parks Department to improve our local parks. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

41 Degrees North 41° North

is a tribute to Middlebury which lies at 41° 40’ 26” N. Also being the temperature at which cold food is held and cold beer is served, it’s the perfect name! Home for the Summer Festival in 2013, Austin Slabach [NHS ‘06] noticed the Winners’ Circle building for sale and recognized that Middlebury folks needed another place to get an adult beverage and quality food, while still accommodating families. In January 2014, his parents, Marc [NHS ‘79] and Paula [NHS ‘81], purchased it and interior demolition began. The only remaining pieces are some equipment and the historic back bar which resided at the Village Inn until 1953. Evan Miller, Lo Pauwels, the

Slabachs, and many volunteers did the majority of the work themselves. You can expect a warm, familyfriendly atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, craft beers, as much locally-sourced meat and produce as possible, a full service bar and carry-out on Sundays, and other specialties. You can’t miss the 1880 two-story mural which was uncovered during renovations! The menu features fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, brats, steaks, and fun non-alcoholic drinks for those under 21.

Girls

Just Want to

Have Fun!

By Rhonda Eicher, Games Room Coordinator

Girls In Focus It’s great to be a girl, and girls at the Boys & Girls Girls enjoy spending time with each other during Girls Power Hour. Club of Middlebury know it. That’s why members choose to participate in Girls In Focus, an initiative that gives girls the opportunity to develop Last month, participants in Girls Night Out attended a pajama positive character, confidence, and self-image through handsparty where they explored their hopes and dreams, and crafted on activities and small group programs specifically for girls. letters to their ‘future selves’. The activity asked girls to think about and discuss heroes. These programs include Girls Power Hour and Girls Night Out.

Girls Power Hour

“My mommy is my hero!” shared Club member Jourdyn Howard.

Girls Power Hour gives girls time to engage in recreational activities without being in the presence of boys. Young ladies age 6-12 look forward to participating in this program every Friday, when they can compete and play together in an all-girls setting.

When they were finished writing letters and discussing heroes, the girls were able to have manicures and make cereal necklaces.

“It’s a time for girls to show what they can do,” says member Heidi Flores, who currently participates in Girls Power Hour. “My favorite activity is dodgeball.”

Every day at the Club, staff members strive to enable Club kids to feel empowered and to reach their full potential. We are so excited that the Girls in Focus initiative helps us to do just that. Girls in Focus participants loved attending a Girls Night Out pajama party last month!

The Girls Power Hour program promotes becoming more physically active through fun activities in a comfortable environment for girls. These activities encourage girls to become confident in their ability to engage in recreational sports and athletics.

Girls Night Out A new program, Girls Night Out, also educates and encourages girls to try new things in the areas of health, character, service, and education. Occurring once per month, Girls Night Out provides engaging learning activities that focus on building selfesteem and encouraging girls to discover their values as they build positive relationships with peers.

Honoring Our Middlebury Community Schools

Retirees

Middlebury Community Schools have had the pleasure of some wonderful employees throughout the years. We want to express our appreciation and to honor those who are retiring this year.

Leonard Beechy

Sharon Woodruff

NHS Language Arts Teacher

NHS Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher

In 1975, Mr. Beechy did his student teaching at Northridge and was subsequently hired as an English teacher for the 1975-1976 school year. (He points out that this was the last time the Raider basketball team won the sectional at North Side gym until they did it again this year!) He has taught in the English department for the duration of his career. “I think I’ve taught every course we’ve offered over the years, but in recent years I’ve taught mainly juniors in the IB/ Honors program, as well as general level American Literature and English 11.” Events celebrating student achievement and the student-teacher relationship stand out to him, such as the Academic Honors Banquet and the times he has been asked to speak at Commencement or National Honor Society induction. “These events celebrate students’ achievements and allow everyone there – students, parents, administrators, and teachers – a chance to reflect on what’s most important about the work we do together.” After retirement, Mr. Beechy plans to continue writing for the Mennonite Publishing Network, travel with his wife, and spend more time with his grandchildren. “And I’ve been fashioning a reading list that keeps growing and branching out in a lovely and inviting way.”

In 1977, Mrs. Woodruff began at Northridge as a Home Economics teacher, now called ‘Family and Consumer Sciences’. She notes the students as the highlight of her teaching time. “It has been wonderful working with so many amazing kids and that is what makes leaving so difficult. They have added so much joy to my life. I won’t miss the early morning trips to Hardings, grading hundreds of recipe files, and discovering that every kitchen drawer is a junk drawer ... but I will oh, so miss my kids!” After retirement, Mrs. Woodruff plans to stay busy. She and her husband like country music, so they will continue going to concerts. They plan on traveling the United States, seeing the wonderful sights and, she adds, a few eagles, owls, and ospreys. “On some of our trips, we will be taking our two dogs, Tempe and Tux. I will continue to read, exercise, and enjoy just being at home!”

Shelby Weeks

Todd Woodworth

NHS Language Arts Teacher

NHS Spanish Teacher/Men’s Soccer Coach

Mrs. Weeks has been teaching at Northridge since 1978. “Working at NHS has been a continuing delight, each day filled with highlights.” After retirement, she plans to ride her horse across the state of Michigan from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan on the Michigan Shore to Shore Trail Ride September 17th through 28th. “After that, my husband wants to travel to South Africa and Australia… should be exciting!”

After teaching pre-K through high school beginning in 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mr. Woodworth started at Middlebury Community Schools in 1982. For most of his years at MCS, he has taught Spanish at Northridge High. He cherishes all of the relationships that have been created over the years with students, parents, and community members. After retirement, Mr. Woodworth plans to work on his wife’s family farm.

Mary Anne Harshberger

Marilyn Moe

JES Reading Recovery/Title 1 Teacher Mrs. Harshberger began teaching first grade at West Goshen Elementary, when female teachers were not allowed to wear pants, only dresses, and technology challenged them to try to end the day without purple ink on their hands and to run a film through the projector without breaking it! “I came back to teaching, after staying home with my own children for 17 years, in first grade at Jefferson.” Ten years ago, she received training for Reading Recovery, which helps reading-challenged first graders before they fall behind their peers. “This has been the highlight of my teaching career, to work with first grade children one-on-one every day in reading. It is my joy to see the light in their eyes as they figure something out about the printed word that makes sense to them.” On retirement, Mrs. Harshberger says, “I plan to get up when the sun comes up and have a relaxing start to my day with Lyle, my husband of 44 years.” She will also spend more time with their six grandchildren, ride her first-ever brand new bicycle, read more, knit, and “find some new adventures to bring meaning to my life, as my teaching career has done.”

NMS Merge Teacher Mrs. Moe did her student teaching at Middlebury Elementary in the spring of 1972, and was then hired to teach second grade that fall. “I took some years off when I got married and had young children, but returned to Middlebury Elementary in the fall of 1991. I taught for a total of 27 years.” Some highlights of her time with Middlebury Community Schools include working and learning with great students and parents, the privilege of working with wonderful staff members, and taking the fifth graders to Camp Amigo the first week in May each year. Mrs. Moe says, “I don’t have definite plans for retirement, but will certainly be spending more time with my granddaughter in Columbus, Ohio.”

Get Your Grill On! Celebrate National Barbecue Month in May Summer weather is on the horizon and with it comes barbecue season! Grilling can be a fun and relaxing way to spend time outdoors with family and friends. Middlebury is lucky to have our own local butcher Randy Grewe, owner of Old Hoosier Meats, to share his favorite grilling tips.

Randy’s Tips for Grilling Steak Start with a good cut of meat. Suggested cuts are Delmonico (ribeye), porterhouse, t-bone, strip steak, or, for a top of the line cut, beef filet. Steaks at Old Hoosier are always hand cut to order. Drizzle with olive oil and rub in Old World Seasoning, available at Old Hoosier. Let meat sit at room temperature for 45-60 minutes.

Start with a hot grill to sear the first side. If you have to tug to get the meat from the grill, it’s not yet ready to flip. Back off heat for the second side and cook according to preference. Randy uses a ‘sacrifice’ piece to cut through to check and see if it is cooked to his satisfaction.

at home has become a popular trend. Smoking is a time-intensive process, while grilling is much quicker. If you’re craving smoked meats at home, stop by Old Hoosier on Thursdays for Randy’s famous dry-rub ribs.

The Buggy Prank

By Gloria Salavarria

From the 1930s to the early 1980s, before video games and cell phones gave idle young men something to do with their hands, they would get into mischief – especially on Halloween night. In Middlebury, that mischief took the form of a ‘buggy prank’ – the placing of a two-seater Amish buggy atop a building in the downtown business district.

This month, the 21st annual Old Timers’ Meeting will be held at the Middlebury Town Hall and it is a free event for young and old alike where folks are encouraged to share stories of what life was like in Middlebury, or to listen and ask questions. The meeting starts at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, May 12, and it is sponsored by the Middlebury Community Historical Society. The Town Hall is located at 418 N. Main Street.

huck Mather was one of those who participated in that prank and, hearing that confession is good for the soul, he stood up at Middlebury’s Old Timers’ Meeting, an annual event for young and old alike, and told the audience about a buggy prank that he and some of his friends pulled when they were young men many decades ago.

“I believe the statute of limitations protects me – I hope,” Mather said. “When Jerry Yoder was the town marshal, I thought that we killed him one Halloween night. We were up on the roof of the First State Bank building pulling a buggy up the side of the building and he shines his light up there and says, ‘Drop everything!’ and so we did. “The buggy went bouncety-bounce down and off to the side into the alley. “Well, we were quite concerned about Jerry. Figured we’d be looking for him buried underneath that buggy, but I think we scared the heck out of him ‘cause he wasn’t anywhere to be seen.” The prank pulled by Mather and his friends was believed to have started in the early 1930s when Amish youths, who had yet to take the oath and officially become law-abiding members of the Amish faith, put a buggy atop the Middlebury School. This prank so enchanted local nonAmish youths that they decided to do likewise and, for the next five decades on Halloween night, the roof top of at least one downtown Middlebury business would be festooned with a buggy – and, once, two buggies – much to the

dismay of both the local Amish community and Middlebury businessmen. Eventually, this stunt came to a halt, not only because the town finally realized it needed a full-time police force to patrol its streets but because, one night, an Amish man made some pranksters realize he may be Amish but he’s also a red-blooded The double American just like b of men wh uggy prank was pull them and he didn’t o were un ed by two awa separate g at the First appreciate anyone roups State Bank re of each other un ti b l they arriv b u u il il ding to ho ding. trying to ‘steal his ed ist the bug gies atop th wheels’. e That night, six guys left Middlebury in a pick-up truck to search for a buggy to put atop the roof of the First State Bank building. When they spotted a darkened Amish farmhouse, they stopped a little ways down the road and then walked back to the barn. “The place looked as if no one was home,” Lowell Miller said. “This looked like the perfect place. “Well the guys walked up to the barn, opened the sliding door very quietly hoping to remove a buggy and, as they took ahold of the buggy, a very loud voice said, ‘WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? I have my gun with me.’ “Well you cannot believe how fast those guys can get to the road and into a 2-door 1955 Ford,” Miller said. “Now, remember, this was told to me by the older boys, I think, or maybe I remember being there, not This article is brought to you by

sure. Anyway that buggy didn’t go up that night.” Miller went on to become the Middlebury town marshal and eventually the town manager. As for his fellow citizens who were doing the stealing that night, the next year they tried to put a Volkswagen Beetle atop Northridge High school. Unfortunately, the Volkswagen was much heavier than a buggy and it didn’t have staves out front so it wasn’t as easy to haul up the side of the school as they had thought. The car just made it up the steps to the front door of the school where it was found the next morning. The buggy pranks stopped in the early 1980s and the boys joined Miller in growing up to become upstanding community leaders and businessmen in spite of themselves.

Thirsty for Change

Newport Boston Kalona

by Stephanie J. Salisbury

After two visits to Haiti in the 1990s and a subsequent trip in 2013, Randy Troyer saw the incredible need for fresh, clean water that we cannot imagine here in Middlebury. Photo by Rodney and Jodi Gehman, courtesy of Water for Life.

How Biking = Water Water for Life (WFL) based in Kalona, Iowa, has been in Haiti for over thirty years putting in fresh water wells and hand pumps, each providing water for 300 people and their livestock. Putting this idea together with his enthusiasm for bicycle-riding and seeing the United States, Randy developed The Thirst Ride – a 3400-mile bike ride from Newport, Oregon to Boston, Massachusetts in sixty days over the summer. The funds raised will go to WFL to drill more wells for the Haitian people. A new drilling rig purchased in 2012 makes them capable of drilling as many wells as can be funded! For those riders in for the long haul, the cost is $2000 and the ride is fully-staffed and supported, with RVs being used for sleeping headquarters. They are encouraged to set their goal for fundraising at $5000, which is the cost of drilling one well. Segment riders are also welcome to sign up for $50 per day, and encouraged to bring in as much funding as possible.

Help from Home In addition, you can help from your own backyard! You can obtain sponsorships and log miles at home in your own hometown, bringing in donations that will go toward the same goal. Motorcycles are welcome to ride into Kalona, Iowa, to meet in July from all parts of the country and be a part of The Thirst Ride, too. The Thirst Ride begins on June 6th in Oregon and ends on August 1st in Massachusetts. There will be a local ride and get-together on Saturday, July 11th, when they ride through our area.

For more information on how to ride, sponsor, gather donations, or just to learn more about The Thirst Ride, please visit the website at: www.TheThirstRide.com, the Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/TheThirstRide, or call or email Randy at 574.361.9726 or rdtroyer14@gmail.com. Northridge High School

Reflections from the Student Council President  As my senior year ends, a friend’s advice from freshman year rings in my ears: “Make every moment count because it will be over before you know it.” I didn’t really take these words to heart then. Now I am realizing their truth. My involvement in Student Council, National Honor Society, and as a class officer has prepared me for future endeavors and shaped me into the person I am today. When I first took my positions in these various organizations, I embarked on a journey of growth as an individual. As Student Council President, I improved my organization, communication, and social skills. One event that was monumental in shaping me into a leader was Homecoming. I worked for months on the project until the day came to prove that I was capable for the position. Although stressful, the evening turned out to be a success. As National Honor Society Treasurer, with my mathematical mind, monitoring the club account was relatively simple. But I was required to take orders as well as give them. Fortunately, I had a great group of people working with me to plan events such as the Winter Semi-Formal Dance. We collaborated with the National Art Honor Society to decorate, and the end result was a wonderful experience. As a Class Officer, I was one of four juniors in charge of prom,

forming a committee and using local resources for assistance with design and set-up. Prom was enjoyed by almost 500 students, filling us with pride. Some may believe planning such events is an easy or irrelevant task. But I can say that any leadership position comes with perks and burdens. There are at least three things any leader must have in order to succeed: passion, dedication, and skill. Being involved has helped me to hone these aspects of my personality, and I hope that I will be able to pass all that I’ve learned on to the future generation of young leaders in this fantastic, supportive community.

Northridge Middle School

For the third year in a row, Northridge Middle School held ‘Ability Day’, designed to educate students and staff about people with disabilities. The day consists of a variety of stations and speakers. The purpose of the hands-on stations is to simulate the challenges people with disabilities face, and foster compassion and understanding. The entire sixth grade rotated through stations consisting of Autism sensory overload, Cerebral Palsy fine motor challenges, wheelchairs, and simulated blindness. They also learned about how to be friends with a person with disabilities. The seventh grade stations included Deaf/Hard of hearing, Low Vision, and Shaken Baby Syndrome. Seventh grade had a follow-up activity watching “What Would You Do?” videos that demonstrate for students how to stand up for someone being bullied or mistreated. To build on the last two years of Ability Day experiences, the entire eighth grade went on a variety of trips throughout the community where they were able to participate in an activity with a group of people who have disabilities. This day wouldn’t have been possible without the time and support from all the businesses and organizations visited. The trips for the day included Maple City Bowling with the Functional Skills classes from NorthWood Middle School, Concord Jr. High, and Goshen Middle School; Signature Lanes Bowling and Elkhart Sports Center games & activities with ADEC; crafts & games with Wakarusa Elementary and Elkhart Memorial High School Functional Skills, Life Skills, and Young Adult programs; cookie decorating at the Essenhaus with Orchard View Elementary and Northridge High School Functional Skills classes; gardening with MDC Goldenrod at their greenhouse; and the opportunity to share coffee with and listen to stories from a group of Disabled American Veterans. It is difficult to put into words the powerful effect this day provided for students with and without disabilities alike. Middlebury Community Schools is growing a group of compassionate community leaders. The day also would not have been possible without the support of these gracious sponsors: Hochstetler Roofing Services LLC, International Association of Heat & Frost Insulations Local #75, Hoosier Concrete Pumping, and Crystal Valley Exchange Club. SCHOOLS

Reading Madness During the month of March, Middlebury Elementary School celebrated March Reading Madness. Mrs. Ball, the librarian, challenged students to read 120,000 minutes outside of school during March. The students beat that

goal and read a total of 128,053 minutes altogether! We are proud of our students! Reading is a fundamental and important part of every child’s education. Thank you to our parents and community for encouraging our young readers! A bunch of ‘hippies’ celebrate during spirit days at Middlebury Elementary.

During the last week of March, students had spirit days that included hippie day, sports day, crazy hair/hat day, and Middie day. There was also an assembly on April 2nd where some of the high school basketball players came down to celebrate with the school.

Shark Study Do you want to know how the second graders in Miss Strickland’s class at York learned about research? They lived in the ocean for eight weeks! Miss Strickland’s classroom was transformed into an underwater adventure while the students in her class studied sharks. During that week, the students participated in activities to help them learn more about sharks. Students also took notes for their research and worked on writing a non-fiction informational text. They watched Jonathan Bird’s Blue World YouTube videos where Jonathan goes face to face with different types of sharks in order to study them. The kids even got to head to the gym to measure the lengths of different sharks using yarn and rulers. They were shocked to see how long the whale shark is! That’s the biggest fish in the ocean and it can grow to be 40-60 feet long. Miss Strickland said that she loved how excited her kids were about learning. “They were so into it. Everything we did was really driven by the kids and what they were excited about. I’m really proud of them for taking hold of their learning and putting in lots of hard work!” The last piece of their learning included persuasive writing. Groups of students chose a topic and position, and created a display board that defended their position. We threw a shark party one evening after school to share our books and display boards. Families donated snacks and we all had a blast celebrating their learning. It was truly a collaboration between families and school. 32  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  May 2015

JEFFERSON Elementary

Our walk-a-thon will begin in May for our annual all-school trip to Camp Amigo! A fun day for both students and staff.

Thank you to our amazing PTO for the multiple Promethean boards for our classrooms!

Orchard View Elementary

Meet Barbara Morrow The second graders at Orchard View got to meet Barbara Morrow, an Indiana author who wrote the Underground Railroad book entitled A Good Night for Freedom. She was here to present writing strategies to the students on March 9th. Mrs. Morrow spoke about the process she went through to publish her book. She was a great motivator for our young writers! Mrs. Morrow also had a chance to speak to our first graders. She read her book Mr. Mosquito Put on His Tuxedo to the first grade students and teachers, and talked to them about her life as a writer and how fun it is to be an author. The kids had a wonderful time learning about the process of writing.
