Middlebury’s

Learning Corridor

Krider Garden hosts one of the beautiful Quilt Garden displays.

Story and Photos by Dr. Carla Gull

H

ave you checked out Middlebury’s new Learning Corridor?  Stretching from Wayne

Street to the trestle bridge at the Little Elkhart River, the corridor allows natural education opportunities for Middlebury residents and those passing through town on the Middlebury Greenway. John McKee, president of Middlebury Park and Recreation Board, said, “Middlebury has a great story to tell... you can learn about our community’s history, about nature, about wildlife, and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna offered by different gardens.”

Living with Nature While the Learning Corridor includes history and culture of the area, a uniting

theme is nature. With a bluebird trail, rain gardens, the river, and a habitat garden, the Corridor teaches the public how we can live with nature all around us. In addition, the area has received National Wildlife Federation Certification as an area that provides food, water, cover, and a place for wildlife to raise their young. This shows an example of how homeowners can also create beautiful landscaping that helps wildlife in the area.

Learn and Do Beautiful signs along the Corridor illustrate flora and fauna of the area with easy ways to enhance our own backyards. For example, water can be made available through birdbaths, storm puddles, or a small pond. Native plants, trees, and shrubs provide shelter

for animals as well as giving a source of food. Habitat gardens can be as small as a balcony or numerous acres large. With a central location on the Pumpkinvine Trail, Tom Enright of Middlebury Parks mentioned this is an ideal place for educating the public about our natural resources.

Whether you walk, run, or bike along the Learning Corridor, take time to absorb the historical, cultural, and natural significance this area provides to our community.

Deep roots of native plants in the rain garden provide a buffer zone for water run-off.

he Friends of the Middlebury Parks (FOMP), a not-for-profit organization, is a group of individuals, businesses, and civic organizations dedicated to providing time, expertise, funding, and advice for extra projects with the Middlebury Parks Department. Some projects the Friends have worked on or funded include: refurbishing the Memorial

Park gazebo and Krider World’s Fair Garden Park windmill, installing a statue and sundial in Krider Garden Park, helping build new waterfalls and a pond in Krider Garden Park, locating and propagating the Krider Festival Rose, and numerous workdays to assist in park maintenance. These extra projects would be impossible without the support of the FOMP.

The sundial at Krider Garden.

This year, funding efforts focus on expanding the Trails of Middlebury with the construction of the Ridge Run Trail System. Ridge Run is a multi-use trail system that will connect the Middlebury Greenway on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail at the US 20 tunnel to the IU Health Goshen medical clinic, Greencroft Middlebury retirement community, Das Dutchman Essenhaus campus, and Middlebury schools campus. The cost is approximately $230,000. The FOMP has received a $50,000 challenge grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation to help build the trail system and, to receive it, they must raise $100,000 in matching funds. To date, $60,000 is committed to the grant match. The goal is to raise the additional funding and construct the Ridge Run Trail System in 2015. March 2015  |  inMiddlebury Magazine 5

Radioactive Blockheads! By Lindsay Saunders, Associate Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury

As NCAA teams hit the courts this month in preparation for March Madness, the Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury is busy prepping a hardworking team of its own – the Club’s Lego Robotics team known as the Radioactive Blockheads!

Scoring Points Though they aren’t shooting free throws or running laps, the Radioactive Blockheads do exercise their brains regularly through weekly meetings with volunteer program instructors John and Natalie Thomas, who lead the Lego Robotics program at the Boys & Girls Club alongside Education Director Brittany Bayless.

Left to right: Sam Taylor, Zach Eicher, Dane Woodworth, Ethan Ireland.

“The team works together to program an autonomous robot to score points by completing various actions,” she says. “Points are earned as the team creates innovative solutions to problems.”

“Lego Robotics introduces Club kids to the world of science and technology in a unique way,” says Bayless.

A Focus on Teamwork

And, even though they’re not sinking baskets from the threepoint line, Bayless says the Radioactive Blockheads do rack up points on their own scoreboard.

And that’s not all. Lego Robotics participants are guided by a set of core values that encourage them to collaborate with one another and their coaches, honor the spirit of friendly competition, and celebrate discoveries made over victories earned. “It’s all about working as a team and learning together,” says Bayless. Though they won’t compete in another robotics tournament for a while, the Radioactive Blockheads are already working alongside John and Natalie to prep for next season. Thanks to the Thomases, the team will even attend a Robotics camp this summer to increase their knowledge, keep their skills fresh, and ensure they’re ready for their own kind of Robotics ‘madness’ when it comes.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Hawkins Water Tech: A Fluid Family Business H awkins Water Tech, founded in Bob and Nancy Hawkins’ garage in 1967, has always maintained the philosophy of “Listen first to the customer, then match the best product to meet their need.”

In Spring 2004, Hawkins moved into a 15,000 square foot facility in Middlebury. That December, Bob and Nancy sold the business to son Dave Hawkins (President) and son-inlaw Jim Freeze (Executive Vice President), both of whom already had several years of experience working in the family business. A new building constructed in 2009 allowed the existing Elkhart location to provide drive-thru services. Customers can pick up salt, bottled water, and other products without leaving the comfort of their vehicle. Consisting of 28 full-time and two part-time members, the Hawkins Team is dedicated to servicing residential, industrial, and commercial customers throughout the Michiana area. Hawkins’ Elkhart location offers convenient drive-up service for salt, water, and more!

Customer First

Their ‘Customer First’ focus influences every decision made and action taken at Hawkins. From the time Bob and Nancy began until now, their customized approach of treating each situation as a unique opportunity has made word-of-mouth referral the largest resource for their growth and success.

Middlebury: It’s Home Curt VanCuren, Vice President and General Manager of Hawkins, says, “Middlebury is our ‘home’. We enjoy working in every area our customers consider home, but Middlebury is where we come from. The people and businesses in our community will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Serving Our Community Another secret to their success is the intense desire to give back to the community, whether it’s time volunteered by team members, donations of bottled water to various events, or monetary support. Some of the organizations who benefit from time volunteered by Hawkins Water employees include: Middlebury Chamber of Commerce, Crystal Valley Kiwanis Club, Crystal Valley Exchange Club, Clinton Frame Mennonite Church, and Middlebury Church of the Brethren. Over 10% of Hawkins’ marketing budget is invested in sponsorships and donations to scholastic and athletic programs and to charitable events – things as elemental to maintaining our community as water is to life!

Featured STORY

Dean Weirich

From Shooting Star to Hall of Fame

By Rich Troyer

Let’s go back to January 22, 1972 at Northridge High School. Dean Weirich grabs a rebound off a missed Angola Hornet free throw and dribbles quickly up the floor. He crosses mid-court and moves to the top of the key. He stops, gathers himself, and launches a picturesque 18-foot jump shot that hits nothing but the bottom of the net as it exits the rim. Two points for Northridge – the 23rd and 24th points of the night for Weirich. The capacity crowd packing the Northridge gym erupts in a long, loud cheer.

Northridge basketball coach Irv Pratt, left, congratulates star player Dean Weirich on becoming the new Elkhart County career scoring champ. Weirich had just run up a 46-point total against Angola as the Raiders waltzed to a 102-64 victory. That gave him 1,543 career points (to date), topping the previous record of 1,523 set by Goshen's John Ritter.  (Goshen News Photo)

N

o, that shot didn’t win the game. It was actually just a little before halftime and Northridge was ahead by over twenty points. What was so special about that shot? With it, Dean Weirich passed John Ritter as the career scoring leader for Elkhart County. Dean would go on to score 46 points that night, the last two coming on a 70-foot shot at the final buzzer. He would finish the season with 699 points, averaging what is still the best in Elkhart County history: 31.8 points per game. His career point total of 1,823 remained the county record for sixteen years and has been surpassed by only one player in county history, NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp, ranking him in the top 100 all time in the state of Indiana.

Shooting Star A highly recruited high school player, Dean signed on to play college basketball at Ball State University. But, before playing a game for the Cardinals, he transferred to Bethel College where he was named team MVP his junior and senior seasons. His accomplishments as a basketball player are well-known in this area. Ask anyone from that era about Dean and they’ll remember a picture-perfect jump shot – a shot that Dean said he developed while playing against his older brother Don, a 1966 graduate of Middlebury High School. Dean needed to adopt a quick-release, high-arching shot if he was going to stand a chance against his then much-taller brother and his friends. It was a shot that high school and college opponents knew all too well and one that prompted his college coach, Tom Firestone, to refer to Dean as the best shooter in the history of Bethel College basketball.

Making the Hall of Fame Despite local recognition, Dean received little attention from the rest of the state. Other than a 2nd Team All-State selection as a high school senior, there were few accolades or recognitions for his basketball prowess. That changed late last year when

Dean making one of his legendary jump shots at North Side Gym.

Dean was informed that he had been inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame (IBHF). The IBHF, located in New Castle, celebrates the greatest high school, college, and professional basketball players and coaches in Indiana History. It includes legendary basketball names like Wooden, Bird, Knight, and the Big ‘O’ – Oscar Robertson. The process involved many hours digging The community is part of this recognition, too, through microfilm files at local newspapers to find according to Dean. “They were there every Friday original articles about his playing days. It wasn’t New Castle to plead his case for Dean’s induction. One uncommon for Northridge fans to outnumber the other year, he was even accompanied by Dean’s high school team’s home fans. Their two sons followed in Dean’s footsteps and played basketball Sharing the Recognition for Northridge. Even after their graduation, basketball remained a big part of Dean’s life. He still goes to While Dean accomplished a lot on the court, you wouldn’t guess it from talking with him. His quiet, see four or five games each week during the season unassuming nature speaks more to his humility than to between Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Bethel, and his celebrity. Did you know… Did you know that Dean Weirich isn’t the first Middlebury resident to make it into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame? 1924 Middlebury High School graduate Walter Kindy, the man legendary basketball coach John Wooden called “one of the best basketball scouts”, was a 1997 inductee into the IBHF because of his coaching exploits. He coached tiny Beaver Dam high school (located between Rochester and Warsaw) to consecutive Sweet Sixteen appearances in 1933 and ‘34. He later went on to assist Coach Wooden at South Bend Central high school. As a coach, he was an innovator of the shifting zone defense and the running one-handed set shot.

THINK SPRING

Pretty inPink!

When we asked Barb Schwartz of Homeland Gardens to recommend a superstar flower, she had a clear winner to suggest – the Proven Winners® Supertunia® Vista Bubblegum. The pink petunia is one which they use for their own beds at home. Barb loves them because they’re extremely hardy, blooming all summer long in the hot sun and lasting until the first frost. They are low maintenance needing no pinching and, when planted in beds, need little watering. Barb loves how well this variety fills out a basket or bed, with only one plant needed to fill out a 12” pot and only seven plants to fill out their 10” bed, which you may have seen from the road as you’ve passed by. If you’d like to mix a basket with multiple colors, Barb recommends adding in the Silverberry and Fuchsia for a pretty splash.

THINK SPRING Bring Back the

Butterflies

Plant Milkweed! The population of Monarch butterflies has critically diminished due to the elimination of native milkweed. Indiana Master Naturalist and Middlebury resident Monica Yoder shares that milkweed not only help the Monarchs by providing food for the caterpillars and nectar for the butterflies, it can also bring beauty to your garden. There are many varieties of milkweed beyond the common, weedy variety that most of us know. Check out Swamp Milkweed for white and pink color, Butterfly Milkweed for bright orange, or Showy Milkweed for a soft pale pink! There are many resources available online if you search for milkweed or Monarch habitat.

Northridge High School Science Olympiad Invitational On January 17th, Northridge High School hosted the 9th annual Northridge Science Olympiad Invitational. Fifty-six teams participated in this year’s event. Science Olympiad is comprised of 23 individual events that each team competed in. Northridge High School won the High School Division and Wilbur Wright Middle School from Munster, IN won the Middle School Division. Andrew Ostrander and Anthony Eshelmen are preparing the plane to fly in the ‘Wright Stuff’ event. Students must build a balsa wood airplane that will stay in the air as long as possible powered only by a rubber band.

Congratulations to the Northridge Team, winning first overall for the day.

Students must design a car that goes down the track as fast as it can and stop as close to the wall as possible without breaking the egg on the front.

So Much Talent! Heritage students recently celebrated their many talents during the school’s annual talent shows. The audience of nearly 800 students, faculty, and parents were in awe of the students’ skills. The crowd enjoyed watching students play piano or drums, perform magic, Taekwondo, gymnastics, dance, hula-hoop, recite poetry, and sing. The talent shows are just one way Heritage tries to recognize the hard work and discipline students are engaged in both inside and outside of school.   Landon Story plays drums for the HIS talent show.

New Behavior Program at Middlebury Community Schools By Maggie Kenworthy

Walk by a Middlebury Community School’s first grade classroom and you are likely to find a room full of children pretending to be ballerinas or crab-walking.  You may be quick to assume that

it’s indoor recess, or that the children have locked their teacher in a closet. Instead, a new educational game has taken over the schools: the PAX game.

to the game 30 years ago show higher graduation rates and fewer problematic behaviors such as addiction and violence, as well as other benefits.

The PAX game was first introduced to Middlebury Community Schools in 2013. Horizon Education Alliance funded the training of teachers and staff. Horizon is a non-profit organization geared towards improving life in Elkhart County through education. The game has already produced results within the school system. Data collected when the program was first introduced showed that the average classroom saw a 66% decline in negative behaviors. “The teachers and students can feel a difference. The students just love the game and what it stands for,” said Yvonne Buller, principal of York Elementary School.

The PAX game allows students to earn rewards for good behavior in the classroom. But instead of rewards like candy, toys, or stickers, children pick a prize from the classroom’s ‘Granny’s Wacky Prize Bag’. The treat inside the bag may be a chance to walk down the hall backwards or to play invisible basketball for a minute.

Not only does the PAX game produce desirable results in the classroom, but the PAX Good Behavior Game has also produced long-lasting effects. Adults who were introduced

“It really is an easy program to incorporate into your daily routine. It does not take a lot of time out of your day and the students really catch on to the vocabulary that goes along with the program,” said first grade teacher Mrs. Nickell from Jefferson Elementary. The game itself is quite simple. Teachers start the game and watch the students for specific behaviors. The game

First graders at YES give the peace sign which is the signal for ‘PAX quiet’.

Xayvion Maust’s hat for the hat parade had a variety of translations for the word PAX. PAX is actually the Latin word for ‘peace’. 24  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  March 2015

does not take away from learning because it happens while the students are working. Good behaviors that increase classroom productivity are known as ‘PAX’. Bad behaviors, such as distracting others during activities, are called ‘spleems’. Teams with zero or very few spleems win the prize. The magic isn’t in the game or even in the prizes. It is in the discussion that surrounds PAX. Students work with teachers to create a PAX classroom and they define what PAX and spleems are.

PAX Good Behavior Game is the most proven classroom strategy to avert lifetime mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. PAX increases instructional time by 300 hours per year, reduces the need for special education placements 30% or more and has long-term impact on rates of mental illness, ADHD, crime and substance abuse. Since 2013, HEA has launched PAX in 230 elementary classrooms.

All MCS first grade teachers, elementary principals, and elementary counselors, as well as staff in additional grades have been trained. As more staff members continue to be trained in the PAX game, more students are able to benefit. Principal Buller is excited to see the growth in PAX. “The benefits of PAX reach far beyond the classroom and are shown to contribute to long-term success in individuals. As long as Horizon can find individuals to help fund the trainings, we will continue to grow it in our schools.”

The mission of inMiddlebury Magazine is two-fold: to celebrate life in Middlebury and to be a communications hub for the community. It is important to us that the magazine be sent to every household and business in the school system free of charge. In order to serve our community, we rely on ad sales and business sponsorships. We’d love to be able to continue providing in-depth information for all our schools – actually hoping to expand to FULL PAGES for EVERY school – on a consistent basis. We currently have page sponsors for the high school and the athletics page, but need sponsors for the other six schools and for the performing arts page. We fix feet. Most of us climb out of bed in the morning, hit the floor, and we’re off and running. But for some, the feet just aren’t up to the job. And it’s not surprising. One-quarter of the bones in the human body are in the feet. With 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments, it’s no wonder that the foot is one of the most common parts of the body to fall victim to musculoskeletal ailments. And the list of possible issues is long – bone fracture, sprain, hammer toe, heel spurs, bunions, plantar fasciitis, crush injury, infections and open wounds related to diabetes – the list goes on. These are conditions we see every day at OSMC. Many of these conditions can be treated with non-surgical procedures and therapies. But for others, more involved procedures including surgery are called for.
