Outstanding academic improvements at Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury A long-time member of the Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury, Jayson Henry, has attended the club’s Starfish tutoring program every year to improve his reading abilities and has shown astounding improvements this year. Henry struggled in the games room at the club and was consistently in conflict with other members simply because he was bored due to not engaging in activities, programs, or tournaments. Area Director Natasha Lantz and Education Supervisor Cheryl Ross began encouraging Henry to go to the Learning Center to participate in educational activities. Finally, after weeks of convincing, the club began to see Henry in the Learning Center. Recently, Henry asked if he could read to Lantz. “I have been coming to the Learning Center every day to read,” he shared. “I want to read to you (Lantz).” Lantz was blown away! She remembers helping Henry last year with reading and he could barely read a sentence or comprehend what the story was about. She was so impressed with him and proud of his hard work. Henry now comes to the Learning Center every day and is either reading or working on math worksheets for fun!

Art makes Middlebury parks even more special

June 8-July 17

Middlebury’s Linda Pieri is a professional artist and art instructor who partners with the Middlebury Parks Department to brighten parks and create memorable points of interest. She has completed several significant projects this year. The Krider World’s Fair Annual Quilt Garden pattern was named “The Krider Festival Rose.” This original contemporary pattern pays tribute to the Festival Thornless Rose that helped make Krider Nurseries Inc. a successful business. Linda constructed and painted this larger than life red rose mural that was the centerpiece of 2019’s Quilt Garden. She also painted original artwork of key features in Krider World’s Fair Garden that was used to make lightpost banners that hang along Krider Garden Lane in warm weather. For several years Linda has led a painting project for children and adults at Riverfest. Linda has art for sale and conducts painting classes at the Linda Pieri Studio, 208 East Berry St. in Middlebury. In the future we hope to incorporate art in the parks and along the trails to enhance our properties. We appreciate Linda’s help to make our parks even more special!

Thanks!

Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Christmas Tree Lighting in Memorial Park. It was a tremendous gathering of the community. Special thanks to our friend the Grinch for his guest appearance! Thank you to Starfleet for sponsoring this page again in 2020. According to our Master Plan surveys, inMiddlebury is the #1 way the parks can communicate with the public.

Education& Action: Tracks & Scat Many critters forage for food, find cover from prey, and shelter from harsh conditions locally, even in the deepest cold. Tracks and trails tell their stories in snow or muddy areas. Otters, foxes, and others grow thick coats. Deer nibble twigs and paw down to food beneath the snow. On Saturday, Jan. 18, from 1011:30 a.m., meet Middlebury Parks Superintendent Tom Enright at the Middlebury Community Public Library to learn to identify tracks (or other “calling cards” the animals leave behind) that you can find in our parks. There will be an edible craft for kids to make, and then we’ll proceed outdoors to look for tracks. See you there!

What if this year we all made a New Year’s Resolution we could stick with, to just continue practicing the love and generosity we often feel during the holiday season. And what if we even had a daily calendar to help keep us on track? Well here it is. How many of these can you check off

during the month of January? If you check them all off, why not start afresh in February or add some more good deeds of your own (the dates don’t have to be precise, if you see an opportunity to check one off feel free to skip ahead).

RED FOR ED

On November 19, several Middlebury teachers traveled to the Indianapolis Statehouse to rally with 20,000 other teachers from across the state to stand up for public education. They felt strongly that the elected officials of Indiana needed to hear the voices of teachers now more than ever. In particular, the RedforEd rally was a time for educators to peacefully gather at the Statehouse in hopes that our legislators would take notice of some of the many critical issues facing our public schools today – properly funding public schools, a reduction of state mandated tests that take away

hours of instructional time and costs taxpayers millions of dollars annually, and doing away with legislation that places undue demands on schools, classrooms, students, and teachers. While these teachers represented Middlebury Community Schools (MCS) in Indianapolis, MCS administrators went to each classroom with a RedforEd cookie and words of appreciation for what is done in the classroom on a daily basis. The accompanying graphic depicts some of today’s challenges regarding public education.

sports is “the brotherhood that comes with being a part of the teams. Everyone comes together like a family and loves being around each other on and off of the field.” In addition to soccer and football, Graber says he loves to travel to new places with

his family. In the summer he enjoys wakesurfing and other watersports. In the winter he likes to snowboard in northern Michigan and out west. After high school Graber is planning to study business management at Arizona State University or Purdue University.
