Remember when

Yes, Virginia,

There is a

Santa Claus...

and he lives in Middlebury! By Tammy Tilley

H

is eyes really do twinkle. He truly is jolly. His soul is warm-hearted and he spreads Christmas cheer. If Santa is real, then he lives right here in Middlebury. He even grew up in Middlebury. His first grade class was the inaugural class at Middlebury School in 1939. For 55 years, he has been spreading Christmas cheer all throughout Elkhart County and beyond.

Jeremy Miller, MES principal, is pictured on the left, while his friend Brian Smith is on the right. Jeremy was in 7th grade when this photo was taken.

Hughes had it. Playing Santa, I would recognize people but they wouldn’t recognize me, and I could tell them things.

“When people see Santa Claus, you usually bring the best out of them, whether it’s little kids or big kids or grandpas and grandmas,” he said.

“To one boy who walked by, I said, ‘I see you had 14 points last night at the basketball game. Good game.’ That boy stared and stared at me, wondering how in the world I would know that about him. “I enjoy Middlebury,” shares Carmon. “I like living here. And I love making people smile.”

His name is Carmon Cripe. Carmon’s wife Margaret, bringing her own twinkle, laughter, and joy, adorned in a red dress with white fur, has been the merry Mrs. Claus for 40 years. “After our second or third year of marriage, my mom belonged to a home economics club, and they needed someone to play Santa,” Carmon begins their story.

“ They rented me a suit, I

went over to where they were meeting, and I thought, ‘Gosh, this is fun.’

A few years and two Santa suits later, Carmon was hooked on putting smiles on faces and laughter in the hearts of everyone he met.

Share your Carmon-as-Santa moments!

“We used to go everywhere,” said Margaret, her eyes sparkling as brightly as her husband’s. “We’ve gone to nursing homes, friends’ homes, schools, factories, get-togethers. But I usually drive because he can’t see very well with his face all covered in a beard.” The Cripes agree they have gotten away with some slightly ornery stuff. “We used to have a Christmas mall in Middlebury,” Carmon reminisced. “Judy

PAYING IT FORWARD>>>

COMPANY Donates gift to local students

By Mark Salee, Town Manager

T

his month we will take a quick break from the Town government spotlights to fill you in on something spectacular that has happened in our community.

In August, the Town received a letter from John S. Lennie, Chairman of Essential Skills Advantage Inc. (ESA) which is a provider of online elementary school programs. ESA helps children improve their skills in reading, math, geography, and more. Mr. Lennie’s son, John Jr., had recently been traveling through Middlebury and his notebook computer fell off the roof of his car after he forgot to pack it while staying at our local KOA. It was found by Gail Hostetter who took it to Samuel Lovelace at Crystal Valley Computers. They found a way to contact John Jr. to make shipping arrangements to send the computer back to him in Toronto, Canada. Gail would accept no reward for going above and beyond to help locate the owner of the notebook and making things right. Mr. Lennie is a big believer in “Pay it Forward” and we’re pleased to tell the community of Middlebury that we are all being rewarded for Gail’s thoughtfulness and Samuel’s help. Mr. Lennie is celebrating Gail and Samuel by giving a free one-year subscription to ESA’s new and improved Reading and Language program for our elementary school students across Middlebury! This is a value of $150,000 and he is bestowing it upon our community as a Christmas gift. The oneyear subscription includes full access to all elementary grade levels for each student. Mr. Lennie stated “I live in a large city and while most people are good folks I’m pretty sure that if this happened here the computer would be long gone.” This article is sponsored by:

art of the reason for the season is showing care for others by sharing our resources. Numerous opportunities await both givers and recipients right here in our community:

Christmas Angel Adopt-A-Middlebury-Family

Organized by Middlebury’s Deputy Trustee, willing donors are matched with families, with both entities remaining anonymous throughout the process. The families in need provide information on clothing, winter wear, bedding, and toys. Donors can provide any of the following: • Food and wrapped gifts for a family • Financial support for someone else to shop for food and gifts • Financial support to pay for utilities or rent for a family • Financial support for everyday necessities for children, including winter wear Donations are dropped off at the Middlebury Township Trustee’s office located inside the fire department. For more information on this program, please call Kris Mueller at 825-3446, or e-mail: kammiddtwp@frontier.com.

Middlebury Food Pantry

The entire community is welcome to drop off food at our local pantry at 203 E. Lawrence Street (First Mennonite Church). Residents can also get in on the Middlebury Elementary food collection by providing goods to students. The entire school then walks to the pantry on the last day of school before Christmas Break, delivering several hundred pounds of food to share with those in need.

Chamber of Commerce

Wrapping Up

2013

by Julie Whitehead, Chamber Marketing Committee

It is hard to believe that 2013 has flown by, but it certainly has! The Chamber spent 2013 beginning to embark on its own strategic planning process by looking at past accomplishments and envisioning its future. The Middlebury community has so much to offer its citizens and guests and the Chamber wants to promote ALL that we have to offer. And, just so you know, if you receive the inMiddlebury magazine in your mailbox we consider YOU a part of the Middlebury community! In 2013, we joined with the Town of Middlebury and adopted our new logo as part of our branding process. Additionally, the Chamber reformed its Finance Committee and its Marketing Committee. Both of these committees have provided input for the future development of the Chamber. As we wind down the year, the downtown merchants and friends will be hosting their final 3rd Friday party on December 20th. The theme for December will be “Sharing Means Caring” and will feature our annual Ice Festival with ice carvers from around the area making works of art from ice blocks donated by area merchants. So plan to take a break from the craziness of the holidays and enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas celebration with fun, food and fellowship. We are looking forward to 2014 as we will see some of our planning done this year take shape in the form of a few more Chamber events and expanded marketing. If you have considered becoming a member, this is a great time to hop on board. Just give the Chamber office a call at 825-4300.

Chamber Directory Each year, the Chamber publishes a directory of contact informa-

tion for its current members. This handy guide categorizes the great businesses that support the Chamber by business type. You can find a handy “flip-through” digital version of the directory online at www.MiddleburyINChamber.com. Enjoy the many things your town has to offer this month – Middlebury is a wonderful place!

Harry Eby uses a special saw to cut down some trees at the evergreen farm he started in the mid-1940s.

featured STORY

Time-Tested

Traditions By Tammy Tilley

Traditions. They bring us closer and help tell our family story. They’re the stuff memories are made of. One family that has helped make family traditions for nearly seventy years is the Harry Eby family. Today, third generation family members continue to help shape special memories for the Middlebury community at Eby’s Evergreen Plantation, Eby’s Family Fun, and Eby’s Pines RV Park and Campground.

Make A Christmas Tree Memory

Jeff Alexander, grandson of Harry, began working on the farm as a teenager and has owned Eby’s Evergreen Plantation since 1994. Alexander continues in his grandfather’s footsteps by selling Christmas trees to the community during the holidays:

From left, Indiana Governor Robert Orr, Inez Eby, First Lady Rosalyn Carter, and Harry Eby pose in Washington, DC in 1980 when an Eby’s Pines evergreen was selected to adorn the White House for the holidays.

Eby’s Evergreen Plantation

“Never in my wildest dreams was I thinking of Christmas trees,” wrote patriarch Harry Eby about the Scotch pines he planted in 1942 as part of a post-Dust Bowl soil conservation effort. “People stopped and demanded to buy them,” he wrote in his book, My Thoughts After 80 Years. Such was the beginning of a long, trial-by-error task of growing trees. In 1963 after learning retailers were selling trees on lots “down near a very wealthy bunch of residences for $15 or $10 or $25, I thought, ‘If they’re going to sell them at that price, why can’t I?’” writes Eby.

• Enjoy a horse and wagon ride through the tree farm, and visit with Santa on the last weekend of November and first weekend of December. • Visit between 10 am and dark seven days a week to walk the fields, find that perfect Christmas tree, and have it cut down for you to enjoy in your home. • You can also purchase a tree at the Eby Christmas Tree lot located on U.S. 120 immediately west of York Elementary School. For more information on Eby’s Evergreen Plantation, visit their website at www.ExceptionalTrees.com.

In fact, Eby and his trees were so revered in the industry that during the Jimmy Carter presidency, one of Eby’s evergreens was selected to adorn the White House in 1980. Trees have also been provided many times for the state Governor’s mansion and the Statehouse. 900 acres, 70 years, and three quarters of a million trees later, one might understate Harry Eby was quite successful, as Eby’s Evergreen Plantation grows on. 14 InMiddlebury Magazine | DECEMBER 2013

This photo, taken in the 1990s, shows visitors enjoying a horse-drawn wagon ride through the evergreen farm. You can still enjoy a tractor-pulled wagon ride the last weekend of November and first weekend of December.

Eby’s Pines Skating Rink

On July 30 2013, Mark Hooley posted on the Facebook group page, “I Grew Up in Middlebury, IN” two photos taken at Eby’s Skating Rink in 1964. What followed was a thread of 35 comments from people reminiscing about their special moments at the rink. Three comments read: Karen Heesacker: I still have my roller skates, white with big pom-poms! Treva Yoder: Of course my pom-poms were navy and white. Go Middies! Mark Hooley: Remember how the girls would put one arm behind their back so the boys could hold BOTH of their hands during couples’ only skates? Granddaughter Janice Maxey, who owns and operates the rink today, adds: “My brother Barry and I grew up at this rink,” she said. “Grandpa and Grandma [Inez] were committed to offering activities for families, and then my mom [Doris] ran things.”

Make A Family Fun Memory

Maxey is proud their skating rink has been around for 60 years and is still in the business of helping families make memories, just as her grandparents envisioned. While the rink still stands where it started in 1953, the part of the building that once housed the very popular restaurant now is home to laser tag. “I see grandparents and parents with the teenagers and kids all playing together. Laser tag is fun, fast-paced, and our system has all the sound effects and bells and whistles,” said Maxey. Mini-bowling will be added to the attraction in January 2014. Harry Eby, photographed in the 1990s, stands by his “Classified Forest” sign, indicating that some of his farm remained a natural wildlife habitat.

Eby’s Pines RV Park & Campground

“In my continuing search for ways to serve the people of the community, I came up with some ideas in rather peculiar circumstances...the campground was no exception,” wrote Eby about his decision to create a campground. In 1968, that idea became reality when Eby’s Pines RV Park & Campground was born. Eby developed the ground himself, cutting through the earth in some places, building hilly terrain in other areas, always maintaining the beauty of the pines along the Little Elkhart River. Families came from all around to enjoy the 40 acres of nature’s tranquil playground, and numerous RV corporations held company picnics at the campground.

Make A Camping Memory

Left is grandson Barry Lang, and right is Janice Maxey, who today run Eby’s Campground and Family Fun, respectively. The lake, once located at the campground, was made by grandfather Harry Eby.

Barry Lang, Eby’s grandson, and Lang’s wife Chris, have been running the campground since the mid-1980s. Like Lang’s grandfather, countless hours of sweat and labor have been invested in keeping Eby’s dream alive. “We’ve updated everything,” he said. “We’ve laid new underground lines, our pond area has been updated, which we keep well stocked for fishing. We have a 2,400 square foot heated pool with slides and a water umbrella.” The Langs have also added a second, smaller therapeutic pool with spa jets. What you won’t find changed among the 300 camp sites and numerous Amish hand-built cabins is nature’s beauty. “This campground is still one of the most beautiful spots around,” muses Lang. “We bump right up against Bonneyville Mill County Park and its trails. It just doesn’t get prettier than this. “I think my grandpa would be very proud of this campground. He loved to create great experiences for other families. Many people who come here today do so because they camped here when they were children. Now they bring their kids.”

THE NATURE

of a blogger

Introducing Carla Gull, creator of Inside Outside Michiana Story and photos provided by Carla Gull

M

y childhood was full of hanging upside down from trees, picking strawberries, and being outside all day long in the summers. Almost thirty years and many international moves later, I moved back to the area with my own family of boys and tried to find alternatives to the bombarding technology options. I love getting outside with kids and enjoy discovering new places, activities, and nature programs. I started my local nature blog, Inside Outside Michiana, last fall after repeatedly saying, “Someone should . . .. I was inspired to finally be that someone! I had just gone through the Indiana Master Naturalist program and found myself going to several

18 InMiddlebury Magazine | DECEMBER 2013

different websites and newsletters to find the nature programs our family wanted to attend. I was already putting many of these on my own personal calendar and wanted it all in one place. At the same time, we visited several local nature places and found very little information online about these great natural spaces. I started recording our journeys through the natural world in and around the greater Michiana area. Over time, Inside Outside Michiana has truly become the place to find the scoop on getting outside in Michiana. On Inside Outside Michiana, I have a Calendar of Natural Events, reviews of various natural spaces in the area, links to nature-based organizations and resources, and a regularly-updated blog of our adventures. I have gone on hikes with the Elkhart-South Bend Audubon Society, built bird and bat houses at the Middlebury Library, eaten foraged meals with locals, and dipped my toes while creek stomping as a part of the Hoosier Riverwatch Training. Sometimes I am solo with the boys with the youngest strapped to my back; other times, the whole family goes on our adventures. I also enjoy joining great friends I have met in the area through natural journeys.

One of our early nature blog challenges included visiting all of the nature centers within a one-hour drive and reporting on each one. In November, I hosted 30 Days of Nature Art, with many nature-based art options for both children and adults. In December, I am hosting 31 Days of Nature Kindness for the holiday season. Armed with a Doctorate of Education, I share resources and options to help connect others with nature in our local area. As a mother, I know how to push through the obstacles to get our children and families outside. As a granddaughter, I am honored to fill the birdfeeders so my grandparents can better enjoy the icy winter view. To me, nature can be as close as the beautiful view out the back window. Nature has something for all of us, no matter our ability, age, or education. Middlebury is a vibrant area full of nature and people who enjoy their time outdoors. Join us as we get the inside scoop on getting outside in Middlebury on the Outdoor Living page!

Dr. Carla Gull blogs at www.InsideOutsideMichiana.com. She is often seen with four tag-along explorers in the greater Michiana area.

What IB means to me: I have a very special place in my heart for IB. I thoroughly enjoyed the program and my coursework while at Northridge. While it was gratifying to receive the full diploma, the real payoff is happening right now - in college. I am one of the few Honors College students not struggling with coursework. IB taught me excellent study habits, and as a result, I can handle the academic workload in college. IB also taught me great time management skills that have allowed me to balance a rigorous course load with a large amount of campus involvement. Professors, advisors, and peers have already noticed my passion for learning as cultivated through the IB program. Pursuing the IB diploma, or IB certificates, should be a goal of every high school student who plans on attending post-secondary education. The skills you will learn through group projects, rigorous coursework, and finding a balance between school, extracurricular, and social activities will be an asset in any college experience. If you know of a former IB student that should be included in the IB Student Spotlight please contact Shelly Wilfong wilfongr@ mcsin-k12.org

Northridge Engineering/Industrial Tech. Department Teaming with the Community Students in the Introduction to Manufacturing classes are teaming up with local businesses and organizations for their projects. The Introduction to Manufacturing class covers basic woodworking and metal working processes throughout the year. Students are currently working on projects for the Middlebury Little League and for the NHS athletic department. Students working for the Middlebury Little League have been manufacturing 14 helmet and bat holders that will be used in the league dugouts. Other students that have been working for the NHS athletics department are currently working on designing and manufacturing ticket booths. Both of these projects are being completely manufactured by students during their class time. With the great facilities and equipment at NHS the Engineering/Industrial Tech. Department is always looking for ways to team up with the community. Students have the ability to do 3D Modeling, 2D CAD drawings, and floor plan design as well as manufacturing of products. If you have a project that you would be interested in teaming up with a Northridge High School student please contact Mr. Hembree at hembreek@mcsin-k12.org.

Northridge Middle School Chicken Soup for the

NMS Teacher’s Soul Mrs. Adams Gets Published in Acclaimed Book Series

M

By Tammy Tilley

rs. Kristina Adams teaches the subject of sixth grade social studies with stories. She writes stories. She tells stories.

Adams spent her growing up years in several different countries, but one country in particular she talks about is Austria.

Adams’ LIFE is a story.

“My older brother and I would ride a couple of streetcars through the city of Vienna, which was over an hour away from our apartment building. It’s hard to believe now, since we were only in second and fourth grades when we were doing this commute. All of our peers did the same thing.

Recently, Adams’ story called “Past, Present, and Future” was published in the latest edition of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” book series. This particular issue, titled “It’s Christmas!” contains “101 Joyful Stories about the Love, Fun, and Wonder of the Holidays.”

“When I was in middle school, we lived in Istanbul, Turkey, and then my brother and I also went to boarding school in Germany when I was in 8th grade.” Gaining many life lessons from her childhood, it seems natural Adams would choose teaching social studies as her vocation. Not only does her upbringing provide the perfect backdrop for her classroom, her writing accomplishments also parallel her subject matter. Adams’ story, “He Sees,” was published in “Chicken Soup for the Christian Teenage Soul” in 2003, and then also selected in the “Best of ” series for teens in 2008. You’ll have to purchase the book on Amazon to read her brief and captivating story, but a few hints include: • Highlights from Adams’ childhood as the daughter of missionary parents • Her favorite childhood book series that’s virtually unheard of in America but is similar to the “Nancy Drew” or “Hardy Boys” series

Adams’ writings have been published in other magazines, but she quickly credits her colleagues and family for helping along the way “Their honesty and constructive criticism have been invaluable.” Turns out, Adams’ stories are invaluable to her readers.

Mrs. Adams poses with her favorite book series from childhood, “The Famous Five”. This book series originated in Britain and is very difficult to locate today.

Heritage Intermediate School News from Mrs. Dyer, Principal

Northridge High School Foreign exchange students helped Mrs. Dyer and H.I.S. students lead morning announcements throughout Diversity Week. Students from Italy (far left) and Denmark (far right) shared about their homelands, their cultures, and what they enjoy most about being in the United States.

C

reating cultural awareness of different countries is at the center of Culture and Diversity Week at Heritage Intermediate School. Honoring Martin Luther King Jr., the introduction of this week is meant to be the start of a new journey of exposing students to various cultures. Heritage students and staff celebrated diversity November 11-15 by learning about Thailand, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Brazil, Honduras, and Italy. Northridge High School foreign exchange students from each of these countries spent time visiting Heritage and sharing about their homelands and cultures on the school’s televised morning announcements. Heritage students enjoyed hearing the exchange students speak in their native languages and enjoyed learning interesting facts about each of the countries represented. The exchange students also shared about their typical daily lives in their home countries, including sharing about their favorite activities and favorite foods. The fun of learning continued at lunch time as students viewed pictures of each country ‘on the big screen’ and as they sampled traditional foods such as sauerkraut and tortellini. Diversity week was a great week for learning about other cultures throughout the world and opened the door for learning more about the cultures represented in this community and the school’s classrooms.

Mrs. Gannon is serving Pad Thai to celebrate learning about Thailand.

WINNERS

On September 27th, second graders at Middlebury Elementary participated in the O.R.E.O. Project, hosted by a teacher in California. Since 1999, students from every state in the US, almost every Canadian province, and several other countries have participated in this project and submitted their results online to share with each other. Middlebury second graders are always excited to compare their data with schools around the country and the world!

Here’s how it works

Each student has two chances to stack as many Oreo cookies as possible before his or her tower falls. Once a cookie is placed, the student may not touch it again to make adjustments. While one student is stacking, his or her classmates help keep track by counting and tallying. Some students even captured the action using Flip video cameras! After every participant has recorded his or her stack counts, the class takes everyone’s highest count and calculates the class average to submit online. Over 900 classrooms across the United States, Canada and the world signed up to participate this year. Currently the average stack for all 2nd grade classrooms is 18. Pumped about Pumpkins

The second grade students at Orchard View Elementary recently celebrated Pumpkin Day! Students were able to rotate through eight stations, learning something new at each one. They learned about how pumpkins were first used and how pumpkins are grown. They measured pumpkins, counted and tasted pumpkin seeds, and discovered that all pumpkins float. They even got to cook up their own snack: pumpkin pancakes. First Grade teachers just finished a unit on “Miss Nelson’s Missing,” and guess who subbed in each First Grade classroom in the morning? The Better End

n

of the STICK Discovering the Joy of Adopting Senior Dogs

By Jonna Garver, as told to Tammy Tilley Photos by Russ Draper

me laugh, and he loves treats. He immediately adjusted to my home with two other dogs. Because of my special friendship with Harley, I am committed that all other dogs I adopt will be senior dogs, for they deserve a nice home to grow old in just as much as any other dog does. It’s also an easier transition to add a dog already trained and housebroken. Truth be told, I think the owners of these precious senior dogs get the better end of the deal... or stick.

By Gloria Salavarria

“There’s this one dog we know about...” began the conversation between my friends Jerry and Kim and me. They know my heart for rescuing dogs that might not otherwise find a home. This dog the Edwards were referring to, however, is an older dog. A “senior” dog, meaning he is older than eight years. I have since learned that senior dogs are the least likely to be adopted simply because of their age. Even though I have been rescuing dogs for 18 years and currently have two dogs at home I’ve rescued, I knew if I cared for them, they would live for a long time. With senior dogs, I wasn’t sure if I could allow my heart to embrace them and then only have them five, six, or seven years until they die of old age. Still, I listened as my two friends told me about Harley. Harley is a mix breed of Doberman Pinscher and Golden Retriever who had been part of a wonderful home for eight years. When his family moved, they couldn’t take Harley with them, so they took him to Dogtown Resort, a boarding kennel and shelter in Middlebury. I also learned Harley was already housebroken and well trained to sit, stand, and give high fives. My mind started wondering what Harley was going through, what he might be thinking or feeling. After all, he had been loved and part of a family, and then everything changed for him. This adorable, kind animal in my opinion deserved a home regardless of his age. When Carolyn Manley, owner of Dogtown Resort, brought him out, my heart skipped a beat when I saw his friendly face. I immediately knew it didn’t matter whether I had six months or six years with him, Harley already had my heart. It seems like we have been together forever, Harley and I. He bounces when he runs, making 28 InMiddlebury Magazine | DECEMBER 2013
