around TOWN | Middlebury Gives Back

Middlebury gives back

in a big way

Cancer is such an evil disease. It is especially horrible when it strikes the youth and children that are so innocent.

-Gregg Eash, Team Coach

By Stephanie J. Salisbury

LAX OUT Childhood Cancer

On May 3, the Northridge Lacrosse Club would like to share their love of the sport with our community and raise awareness of childhood cancer which affects some of our own youngsters such as Sam Grewe, #20 on the team. Wear yellow to show your support, and come watch Sam and the team. Games start at 10 am and last all day. Admission is free, concessions are available, and you can purchase a yellow LAX OUT bracelet or try out your shooting skills at halftime. For more info, contact Stephanie or Eric Lee at 825-2537.

KOA Care Camps BIG Weekend

The Middlebury KOA on SR 13 just north of SR 120 hosts a Sam Grewe KOA Care Camps BIG Weekend on May 10th. Local vendors will be there from 9 am to 4 pm, WFRN broadcasts live, and there will be carnival-style kids’ games, crafts, tie-dye, buzz cuts, face painting, a live and silent auction, and more. All events raise funds for KOA Care Camps, which provide week-long summer oncology camps to kids with cancer at no charge. In 2013, they sponsored 56 camps with over $550,000 in grants. This year, all overhead has been completely covered by corporate donations, so all monies raised at the event will go directly to the camps. For more info, contact Hope Perkins at 800-562-5892.

Health Fair/Carnival Benefit for Phil Rissot

On May 17, Amberwood Terrace Chiropractic and the Elkhart County community come together to celebrate the life of Patrolman Phil Rissot, honoring his memory. A lifelong resident of Elkhart County, Phil was committed to serving others. He graduated NHS in ‘93, married Jennifer Scheetz the following year, and they were blessed with three beautiful daughters. A 15-year veteran of the Goshen PD K-9 Unit, serving on the ERT and Honor Guard during his tenure, Phil was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in October 2013 and, after the battle of his life, sadly passed on February 4, 2014. In his honor, there will be a Health Fair and Carnival from 11am to 3pm in the Amberwood Terrace Chiropractic parking lot at 663 CR 17, Suite 3, in Elkhart. All proceeds will be donated to Phil’s wife and daughters. Local police departments and FOPs will sponsor game booths for kids and there will be a jousting arena, obstacle course, bungee run, jump house, and other carnival games. Food, refreshments, raffles, and entertainment demonstrations are all available throughout the day.

REMEMBER when

Old Timers

Meeting

Photos and Story by Gloria Salavarria

“Remembering When” is what the Old Timers Meeting is all about and it’s fun! In 1993, Vernon Miller came up with the idea for the Old Timers when he attended a lecture at the Middlebury Library by historian Patrick Furlong, a professor at Indiana University South Bend. After his talk, Furlong opened the session to the audience and people enjoyed this sharing of stories from Middlebury’s past so much that Miller, an avid local historian who ran his family’s cider mill northwest of town, decided to host an annual Old Timers Meeting as a way to get the town’s senior citizens together to enjoy and share stories of what life was like once upon a time in Middlebury.

Don Smucker shares a bit of Middlebury’s past.

Rex Krider speaks about growing up and playing on the grounds of Krider Nurseries.

This year will be the 20th year for this meeting and all are welcome. Folks do not have to pay to attend, nor be born in Middlebury to enjoy and appreciate the stories told of life growing up in northern Indiana, just show up at the Middlebury Town Hall at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, May 13.

The Middlebury Community Historical Society now hosts the event, along with the Vernon Miller family. The meeting is recorded to provide a permanent record of Middlebury people and their stories for future generations.

Spring Updates from

Parks Report |

around TOWN

Middlebury

Parks By Tom Enright, Park & Recreation Director

Parks and Chamber of Commerce Partner to Promote Economic Development

Several joint projects are planned for this spring that will blend the Chamber of Commerce’s mission to promote economic and civic opportunities with the Park Departmet’s mission to provide exceptional parks, trails and educational opportunities. These projects are being funded by the Parks Department and donations to the Friends of the Middlebury Parks and the Chamber Fund for Middlebury.

Wayfinding Signs Improve Guest Experiences

• An Informational Kiosk will be constructed and placed in East Park adjacent to the Middlebury Public Library. Along with a large map, the kiosk will have literature and points of interest as well as information about Middlebury attractions and events.

New signs are being placed along the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail in town to help guests navigate our trails and guide them to local destinations. This is a big improvement that will create a more satisfying experience for guests to our town. The signs were purchased with the funds raised from last year’s Trails of Middlebury Celebration.

• A Trails of Middlebury Pocket Map will be published identifying and promoting Middlebury attractions, destinations, eateries, schools, accommodations, and services. • A Learning Corridor will be developed along the Middlebury Greenway between Wayne Avenue and the Little Elkhart River trestle bridge. Interpretive signs will educate guests about Middlebury’s history and natural resources.

Trails of Middlebury Celebration

SAVE THE DATE! The Friends of Middlebury Parks and the Park & Recreation Board have set the date for Saturday, July 12th from 6 pm to 9 pm. This year will be an evening event that includes a guided walk along the Learning Corridor, a casual kayak cruise on the Little Elkhart River Blue Way, and a hospitality tent featuring local music, food, drink and children’s activities. Funds raised at the celebration will go towards improved wayfinding on the Trails of Middlebury. Look for more information in next month’s issue – and be sure to mark July 12th on your calendar!

Summer Fun Day Camp The Summer Fun program is a free program offered by the Middlebury Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with Middlebury, Jefferson and York Townships. Children ages 5-12, living in any of these three townships are eligible for the camp. Summer Fun is held Monday through Friday from 9 am -3 pm at Riverbend Park. The dates are from June 9th through July 18th with the week of June 30th to July 4th off. The children will have planned daily activities and take exciting field trips to local attractions. The camp is limited to 40 kids, so register soon by contacting the Park office at 825-3283.

The golf outing is such a fun way to enjoy a day of golf, all the while making an impact in the lives of children right here in Middlebury. It’s a win-win.

Join us for our 12th Annual Golf Outing! May 16th, Meadow Valley Golf Course How can four people and one small ball positively impact the lives of 650 children? Through the annual Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury golf outing! 2014 marks the twelfth year for this fun, laid back afternoon of golf, and it’s all in support of the youth in Middlebury. This year’s event will take place at the newly-renovated Meadow Valley Golf Course in Middlebury. Lunch will be served at 11 am, followed by a noon shot gun start. Members of the community are encouraged to gather a foursome and join

us on the green. There are many ways to support the golf outing and they can all be found at www.bgcelkhartcounty.org. Held for the first time in the spring of 2003, the now popular golf event was the first major fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club. Each year, the event has grown due to the support of the wonderful volunteers, sponsors and, of course, golfing enthusiasts. The organ was restored following the 2011 renovation of the theatre which opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1924. After the restoration, a crew of nearly 20 spent three weeks hoisting equipment and filling the two pipe chambers with more than 1,000 pipes. The project absorbed nearly 10,000 man hours for the crew over a year. Looks are one thing, but wait until you hear it! featured STORY | American Legion

With over 14,000 posts across the world, the American Legion provides services not only to veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces, but also to the communities where these posts make their homes. Our own Post #210, named for Mark L. Wilt, a local man killed in action in France during WWI, was established in Middlebury on February 27th, 1921.

Then & Now What Does the American Legion Do?

“The Legion is here to support our veterans and their families and survivors, welfare of children, national defense, and to promote Americanism through our community and schools,” says Jack Cook, Commander of Post #210. “The other entities [Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, and Legion Riders] support the Legion in their efforts. Over the last eleven years, the Legion has donated over $140,000 to various community projects and programs including school organizations, Boy Scouts, our food pantry, Fire and Police Departments, functions such as Christmas for Kids, Boys & Girls Club, as well as worthwhile veterans’ projects.”

While the core mission of the Legion hasn’t changed, the facilities have been more open to the public of late in the hopes of educating and involving the community in that mission as well. They’ve also become smoke-free which, Cook says, was a difficult decision at the time but “we did so in order to provide a stronger commitment to being a family-oriented facility and organization.” Currently, their biggest difficulty is trying to gain interest from the younger generation of veterans returning from deployment in the Middle East. If you, or anyone you know, is a returning vet, give Post #210 a call to see how you can get involved. Photo by Sunday Hale

Scholarships and Education

And the love that the Legion pours out to our community doesn’t stop there! There is scholarship money available to active members and their children, step-children, and grandchildren who are interested in higher education, whether they’re a senior in high school, already in college, or an adult looking to go back to school. “The Legion also oversees the Scott Neilson Memorial Scholarship for Trade/Vocational Education, open to any Elkhart County Career Center or Northridge High School senior as well as families of Post #210. This scholarship is not solely based on academics, and provides $6500 or more each year,” Cook says. You can pick up an application for scholarships right at the post.

Memorial Day Schedule: Friday, May 23rd: Legion posts flags at local and

nearby cemeteries.

Sunday, May 25th: Legion posts lights on vet-

erans’ graves at Gracelawn Cemetery. Candlelight vigil begins at dusk and goes until dawn.

Monday, May 26th: Parade begins at 10 am from

elementary school to Town Memorial Park. Immediately following is the park service, then the memorial service at Gracelawn where the war roster of area vets will be read by era. Public is then welcome to a picnic-style lunch at the Legion at conclusion.

ORCHARD VIEW ELEMENTARY: Run the Halls OVE had a great turnout for our first “Run the Halls” program. The students committed to meeting twice a week for six weeks of running the halls. There were 58 students who participated and they all received medals and bracelets after completing the program. It was amazing to see their commitment and overall running improvement over the six weeks. There were students who struggled to complete one lap in the beginning and, by the end of the program, they were able to run a mile without stopping! A lot of rewards were handed out to students who completed 13+ miles over the course of six weeks. We would love to continue this program next year and possibly have a fall and winter session. Thanks to all the great parent volunteers, this program was a huge success.

SCHOOLS | Heritage Intermediate & Northridge Middle HERITAGE INTERMEDIATE:

Roller Coaster Fair

Heritage Intermediate students brought the theme park to school with them on Friday, April 18, by hosting Heritage’s first Roller Coaster Fair. Thirty-one teams of students put their heads together to create gravity-pulled thrill rides. Students constructed their roller coasters using household materials that allowed a marble to roll down the roller coaster and land in a paper cup at the end. While teams could use various sources of energy to add pizzazz to their roller coasters, the coaster itself could only operate as a ‘gravity ride’. Students had to problem-solve and think like engineers in order to figure out how to create corkscrews from the 5th and vertical loops, or how to keep their marbles moving down one hill and up another. Roller coasters were judged on technical merit, theme/ creativity, rider enjoyment, and student inquiry. Ride designers had to be prepared to talk about the methods they used to create and test their coasters “Sometimes you just have to keep trying different things to find something that works” said one of the participants. H.I.S. students learned a lot making their roller coasters, and had fun too!

Memories of

Mother’s Day By Linda Garber

Linda Garber’s roots are in Middlebury. Her grandfather’s and greatgrandfather’s names are on the building plaques at the old Middlebury High School. She has served 5 Middlebury schools as Library Media Specialist. She and her husband Steve, their 3 married children and 6 grandchildren continue to live in the community.

It was a straw hat with an upturned brim, a pink ribbon circling it with a bow in the back. Wearing that cute hat for Mother’s Day was one of my first memories. And I learned that Mother’s Day was always very special at our house!

When we were young, the day began with serving Mom breakfast in bed. My biggest contribution was running outside to cut a fresh flower for the tray while my sister Randa fixed the toast. The best part was sitting in the big bed eating with Mom –I wonder how many crumbs were on the sheets that night!

Mother’s Day also meant a corsage for Mom. Showing up at church and the big family dinner without a corsage was like walking in with no make-up and your hair in curlers! I remember Dad pinning a single carnation on my Sunday dress, and feeling how special it was to be a cherished female.

The Mother Daughter Banquet

One of the biggest traditions at our church was the Mother Daughter Banquet. It happened every year just as sure as the sun came up in the morning. What a celebration it was! Each year the committee chose a different theme – a lady who talked about hats and we all wore hats, a clown who entertained us, a celebration of weddings with ladies of the church modeling their wedding gowns, a gardening theme and we each took a geranium home. Planning the event was as detailed as planning a NASA mission into space. There were little programs and handmade favors at each place setting. How many times did I memorize the welcome to mothers, which followed Mom giving the welcome to daughters? Seemed like a lot! 22

is for the million things she gave me, means only that she’s growing old, is for the tears she shed to save me, is for her heart of purest gold, is for her eyes, with love-light shining means right and right she’ll always be.

One highlight we all loved was the contest for door prizes. There were gifts awarded for the grandmother with the most grandchildren, for the person who had traveled the farthest to attend, for the youngest baby, for the mother who had washed windows that day, for the family with the most generations in attendance, for the woman who had her garden planted, and on and on. We loved the door prizes! However, the part I remember best was the feeling I had – the blessing that each one of us were special! Getting together with my cousins was always fun, fun, fun! And we were always together on Mother’s Day. As the years passed and our family grew, we got together less often. But we still spent Mother’s Day together. Being a woman will always be worth celebrating.

Dutch Creek Farms animal park

W

hat if I told you you could drive ten minutes and see deer, elk, zebras, yaks, kangaroos, pot-bellied pigs, monkeys, and even a wildebeest? Or, if you’re not that adventurous, what about petting some baby goats, lambs, and ponies?

Six years ago in the fall, Vernon Miller was laid off from Jayco and then was home during the winter. “My husband had so many ideas I didn’t know of,” laughs Esther. “He came up with this idea: let’s start a little petting zoo! And the next spring, we started up. We didn’t have nearly as many things as we do now, but we’ve been adding on and it’s been busier every year.” Dutch Creek Farms Animal Park is just a stone’s throw from us, right off SR 120 in Shipshewana. They’re open May 1st, just in time to see some adorable baby animals. They have a horse-drawn wagon ride around the park, where you’re each given a bowl of animal feed and, if they walk up to you, you can reach out and let the animals eat right out of your hand! “We have a petting area where the smaller animals are – goats, sheep, a very tame pony, all the kangaroos are up there – and you can go right in to the animals and pet them,” Esther says.

Taking into consideration the care and food for the animals, the pricing is pretty good, too. You get access to the petting area and the horse-drawn wagon ride, and can stay as long as you like. Adults are $11.95, seniors 65+ are $9.95, and kids 3-12 are $7.95 (2 and under are free!) With a group of ten people or more, adults are only $8.95, seniors $7.95, and kids $6.95. “We have people who have been here every year since we opened, but we have some that come that don’t live too far away and never knew we were here,” says Esther. So gather up the kids and their friends, take SR 120 east to 1000, turn left, and the first place on the right is Dutch Creek Farms. Bring your camera and make some spring memories today! John McKee is the President of the Middlebury Park Board. He is very hands-on, cutting wood for bat boxes, planning for parks, and leading hikes. He said, “I enjoyed the variety of different meeting locations in Elkhart County. We went to places I had heard about, wanted to go, but never had. This has encouraged me to return and take my grandchildren.”

Monica Yoder

Elma Chapman

Elma Chapman is very active outside, kayaking, cycling, cross country skiing, hiking, etc. She volunteers with Maple Wood Nature Center, monitors blue bird houses along Pumpkinvine Trail, volunteers with Middlebury Parks, sews vests for Indiana DNR, writes a weekly column for the Middlebury and LaGrange newspapers, and is on the IMN Alumni Elkhart Board. She said the best part is meeting others with similar interests, learning about volunteer opportunities, and sharing what she has learned with others. She said, “The contacts you make are the most valuable part.”

Gloria Salavarria

Gloria Salavarria shares nature through writing and taking pictures. She is on the board of Friends of Middlebury Parks. She adds to her knowledge of our natural environment, geology, plant life, and bird populations daily. She takes in nature on her recumbent bicycle.

Monica Yoder is a member of Friends of Middlebury Parks and serves on the Middlebury Park Board. Serving on the IMN Steering Committee, she is an excellent resource for questions about the IMN program. She remarked, “A few hours given by a generous volunteer can mean kids learn why and how to plant a tree. Volunteers can mean that benches, swings, and buildings can have a fresh coat of paint and that flowering bulbs planted in the fall become spring flowers.” Indiana Master Naturalists are a great asset to our local community, giving back in many ways.

fit Pumpkinvine Cyclery Our Fitness Interview: Tony Bontrager

1. What made you decide to get fit, or have you always been?

In 2012, I was carrying an excessive amount of weight, ashamed to see myself in a mirror or pictures. I always admired a group of bicycle riders who rode past while I mowed the lawn. I wanted to ride so badly, but didn’t feel like I could even begin, being so out of shape.

2. What did you do to get fit?

During a 10-month process leading to bariatric surgery, I learned that there would have to be a huge, committed change in my lifestyle, including proper diet, exercise, and a new positive mental outlook in everyday living.

3. How has it changed your life?

I had my surgery in October; my wife bought me a road bike for my birthday that January and my life changed for the better. Today I’m 110 pounds lighter. Cycling has played a huge role in my weight loss and, in the process, has become a passion for me.

4. What is it that keeps you working at your program to get fit?

Now my whole family is involved in riding! We generally take leisurely rides which I enjoy just as much as challenging myself for 50 miles on the Pumpkinvine trail. We’re regular visitors to Pumpkinvine Cyclery. Spencer and Brittany, the owners, have given my family one more thing in common and loads of information and support along the way. There’s always something going on, spring to fall. It keeps you motivated and it’s just a good time.
