Sunday Hale

This past summer Sunday Hale interned with inMiddlebury Magazine and presented that unique point of view her eye sees when she looks through a camera lens. Sunday grew up in Middlebury and this December will be graduating from IUSB with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in photography and a minor in drawing and painting. Best wishes to Sunday as she finishes her college degree! Please enjoy this small sampling of her work.

Krider Gardens

During her internship Sunday has enjoyed seeing her hometown through a different lens, so to speak.“I like to use unusual angles and vivid colors to give my subjects an enchanted quality – like the mushrooms and windmill at Krider Gardens.”

Middlebury is such a friendly town; you can’t help but smile at people. I love having people wave at me when I’m driving around. It always puts me in a better mood.

Rural Farms

“Growing up in a smaller town made me pay attention to detail,” shares Sunday about living in Middlebury. “In the city, everything is so busy. But in the country, everything slows down and you take the time to notice and enjoy the little things.”

around TOWN Town Manager Update

Middlebury’s

BRAND

by Mark Salee, Town Manager

What is a brand? When I think of mac & cheese, Kraft pops into my head. What about cars? Could be Ford or Chevy. So what is a community’s brand? A community’s brand is not just a product, a logo, a website, or the name. It’s what the community’s residents, visitors and audiences perceive about the community and the community’s promise. This is what the Middlebury Chamber of Commerce, the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Town decided to find out starting last January. A team consisting of local business owners, government and civic leaders, and professional consultants asked themselves and others in and around the Town of Middlebury,

“What is Middlebury?” What they found were six core values that people from all ages and backgrounds identified with our community. These core values help define today’s promise and tomorrow’s legacy of the Town of Middlebury.

Sense of Community –

Middlebury is a small town where people care after their own. It is friendly, welcoming, quaint, peaceful, wholesome, caring and traditional.

Industry, Innovation and Education – Middlebury is

home to many entrepreneurs and is “traditionally advancing forward.” There is a surprising balance of old and new with a progressive edge. There is a strong population of people from outside the area who find Middlebury to be the perfect place to develop their family values, education and business ideas at the same time.

Infrastructure and Safety –

Middlebury is a safe place to live. People feel secure and know that the community has a watchful eye. The Town and its citizens highly invest in what they believe in, both financially and through volunteerism.

Simple Lifestyle and Faith –

Christian values and the simple life are highly regarded. The Amish lifestyle adds character culture to the town.

Family Focus – Middlebury has

strong family values, is kid focused and it is valued as a great place to raise a family.

Nature, Parks and Trails –

Middlebury’s investment in green space, trails and parks is highly regarded and expanding. The next step in this branding process was to take the core values and create something tangible to be used to connect with our community: a community logo to be used to differentiate our community from others. The result is shown above. Imagine three rolling hills appearing as a stylized “m” representing the landscape, openness and simplicity of our community. A circular shape suggesting momentum and continual change with colors that are refreshing, safe and inviting.

That is the community that we call Middlebury.

Help Pack

A BACKPACK by Tammy Tilley

Sharpened pencils. Fresh paper. A new box of crayons opened by you for the very first time. Most of us have had that new school supplies experience where we have all we need to start off the school year just right. Walking into school on the first day backpack in tow, enables many children to feel excited about that first school day.

From now until August 12, The Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury is collecting new school supplies to distribute at their Pack A Backpack drive. All donations may be brought to the Club MondayFriday, 8:30 am-6 pm. Totes will be set up at local Middlebury banks as well. Backpacks and supplies can also be dropped off at the Club’s booth at the Middlebury Summer Festival. While any new school supplies are appreciated, the club is in need of durable backpacks, dry erase markers, pencils, 3 ring binders of all sizes, and sticky notes. According to Lara Wheeler, Associate Executive Director, in the last few years of the initiative, Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury has received 135-165 backpack requests.

Lara Wheeler, Associate Executive Director, Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury.

“For parents with multiple kids, it is a real struggle to get everyone everything they need to start school,” Wheeler said. “We want the kids to be focused on their academics, not worried about whether they have the right pens or pencils.”

One child, after being asked about his backpack last year, exclaimed with fists pumping in the air, “It was awesome!” Sharing a laugh with the child, Wheeler added, “It is so rewarding to see the kids’ facial expressions when they get new supplies. Some of them are just grinning from ear to ear.” So when you go shopping for your kids’ school supplies, please grab a few extra items to contribute to the Pack a Backpack drive. You’ll make a child’s day, and quite possibly their entire school year. Boys & Girls Club Opens August 14 After an exciting summer break, the Club will open on August 14th to start another great school year. Memberships are only $15/year. The Club welcomes youth ages 6-18. Interested families are encouraged to call the Club for a tour and orientation.

Hosts 15th Annual Auction

by Tammy Tilley

What is MDC Goldenrod?

MDC Goldenrod is a faith-based not-for-profit organization that provides quality services to adults and children with disabilities.

What is the Middlebury Connection?

Located at the corner of County Roads 16 and 43, this Goldenrod community provides housing for individuals with disabilities. Support is provided to each individual as needed. This particular community also has Goldenrod Gardens and holds an annual “hosta dig.” The purpose of the auction, according to Colin Rusel, Director of Outreach and Development, is to support the ministry of MDC Goldenrod.

Schedule: Friday, September 6, noon-8:30 pm Open House—come see what is available at the auction. 4:30-7:30 (or until sold out)—BBQ dinner and fundraiser 5-6 pm—Silent Auction 6-7:30—Live Auction (smaller items and some quilts) 7:45-8:30—Program, including live music Saturday, September 7, 7 am-noon 7-10 am—Pancake & Sausage Breakfast 9 am—Live and Silent Auction (until sold out) 9 am—Farmers Market (fresh produce and plants) 9 am-noon—Photo Booth available

How You Can Help

Since financial needs are ongoing, the public is invited to the auction that continues to grow each year.

Rusel expresses his gratitude to Middlebury as individuals extend help to those with disabilities. He also recognizes the welcoming spirit Middlebury residents share toward those living in the community.

Money raised at the auction helps provide housing, food and safety, learning experiences, opportunities for spiritual growth, and participation in local congregations and the larger community.

The entire Goldenrod community hopes to see you at the auction! You can read the entire story online at: www.inMiddlebury.com/stories.

Said Rusel, “The help and support of many hands can empower people of all abilities to be able to live meaning-filled lives.... This program helps to promote independence and self-worth. The auction is an extension of that effort.”

Third Fridays &

Golf Outing by Julie Whitehead, Chamber Marketing Committee

Y

ou’ve heard us mentioned around town perhaps, but really, what does the Middlebury Chamber of Commerce do anyway? It’s okay….we’re not offended. Chambers of Commerce throughout the state of Indiana operate for different reasons - The Middlebury Chamber of Commerce was officially formed in 2003 through the efforts of local business leaders who wanted to make sure that our Middlebury community stays vibrant and alive. The Chamber does this in many ways through involvement in Elkhart County initiatives such as the Economic Development Corporation, Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Additionally, the Chamber has enjoyed a great partnership with Middlebury Town and Elkhart County Government to make sure that Middlebury businesses have a voice in planning. Lastly, the Chamber promotes area businesses to tourists and locals alike through our annual Tourism Brochure, website upgrades and the Fall Festival.

Live music at Third Fridays

Downtown merchants hold a party just for you called Middlebury Third Fridays. In August we’ll be enjoying the last few weeks of summer with stores staying open until 8pm. We’ll have musical entertainment under the tent next to Legacy Furniture. Downtown restaurants will also be open until 8 and there will be some sidewalk vendors selling goodies to eat as well.

Food and friends at Third Fridays

Our Annual Golf Outing will happen on Friday, August 23rd at Meadow Valley Golf Course. The outing raises money for the Chamber to continue its efforts to support and maintain the Middlebury community businesses. So, gather up a foursome and come join us for lunch and a fun 18 holes of golf. You do not have to be a Chamber member to participate. Just call the Chamber office at 825-4300 for an entry form.

Lifelong Lessons

by Tammy Tilley

5 Teachers, 173 Years & 20,760 Students

Thirty-eight years ago, Leonard

Beachy entered his very first classroom as an English teacher at Northridge High School. Four years later, Ellen Augustine, Lynn Thomas, and librarian Dan Shroyer joined Beechy. One year later, Donald Lanctot, another English teacher, came to Northridge. They’re still in the same department, still teaching, and all still committed to the profession and their students. Combined, their total years teaching together equal 173. They also have influenced somewhere around 20,760 students through those years. When these four teachers, minus Thomas who couldn’t attend the interview, came together to reflect on their tenure, what became obvious very quickly is they love their jobs, they enjoy Northridge students, and are concerned about the future of public education.

you younger. Many of my peers are “old people.” I don’t feel that way yet. And I think Middlebury Schools is still an excellent school system.

What’s it like to have worked together for so long? Lanctot: You have a familiarity and when you work with people for a longer time it’s easier to overlook our shortcomings and see our value. You find ways of making things work. Beachy: And you learn the value...all the names and stories we have in common. There’s a lot of history there.

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in kids?

Below is a sampling of answers they gave when asked about all the many years they’ve been in education. To read the entire interview, visit www.inMiddlebury.com/stories.

Shroyer: I would say we’ve seen more of a change in families and not so much kids. The families just aren’t what they used to be; there’s not the traditional mother and father.

Why are you still teaching?

Beachy: I think when people ask me how things have changed

Augustine: For me it’s still the kids. I don’t have a perfect day

every day, but I still enjoy my classes. I like being with these kids.

Shroyer: Definitely the kids. Working with kids every day keeps 16 InMiddlebury Magazine | AUGUST 2013

they’re expecting me to say things have really gone downhill, and I just don’t see that track. Kids are still kids. I think that the access to information and each other and connection is constant, and that’s the biggest change I see.... I’m still able to tell people, “As long as I still love it I’m going to do it.” I still do. Every day there are still things I love to do and interactions I still value.

What do you see is the biggest change in education? Augustine: Paperwork. Shroyer: State standards, mandated. Beachy: We’ve been somewhat insulated by some of those changes at the high school level. It isn’t as severe here, partly because our teaching loads are more laden with honors kids. In education as a whole, it’s the influence of outside assessment, outside accountability, if you will.

Has that influence been good, bad, or is it just what it is? Lanctot: Bad. That’s what I would say. In fact, I was going to go back and answer your first question, “Why here?” and I would say that insulation from the current trends in education, that insulation has been one of the reasons I’ve stayed. Because Northridge has for various reasons allowed us to teach as individuals. And to me the creativity and opportunity and the empowerment that comes with trying to create and implement a curriculum is part of the reason as to why we teach. The new movement in education to me as I see it isn’t a very fertile environment for that way of teaching. It’s a model of trying to create replication of what they consider effective teaching.

Beachy: It really is intentionally created to make interchangeable parts in education. So that the curriculum outlasts you or the teaching methods outlast you.

What will you remember most about all these years of teaching? Shroyer: The relationships you build in education. There are a lot of

kids who need extra attention and if you’re willing to give it, what you get out of it is just as equal if not more than what they’re getting out of it, especially when you see them years later and they’ve turned out. If you can create a safe harbor for them, away from home, and give them a place to hang out and just to feel safe, and sometimes that goes well beyond what they’re learning from a textbook.

Any final words? Lanctot: I hope people would critically assess these reform move-

ments and listen to what the teachers have to say about the unintended consequences of these reforms that are anything but beneficial to the students.

Beachy: This school and profession...are worthy of the best people coming into it, and I am so hopeful that they will, and we need those people to reform it and say, “This is the way education needs to be done.” I’m hoping it will be better than we did it. I’m hoping it will turn a corner and be better than it ever was. Send special thoughts to one of the English teachers you had as a student! Augustine: I feel like we’re being made into cookie-cutter teachers,

right down to where you have to give the same final exam. Everything’s data-driven anymore. You’re supposed to be looking at the data.... I’m just a firm believer that if they would let us teach the way we’re supposed to teach that our kids would still do just fine on the tests.

Tucked in the hills off County Road 10 is a backyard treasure relatively few may know about. Dogtown Resort is a safe haven for dogs that have been rescued and are in need of loving homes. However, it is much more than that. Dogtown also provides boarding and doggy daycare. They can even bathe your dog and trim its nails. There are ten acres that make up the facilities, so the dogs have plenty of room to run and play. With a capacity to house over 50 animals, they are sure to have some buddies to play with, too. Carolyn Manley (pictured left) is the owner of Dogtown Resort and her passion for these furry friends is evident. Dogtown Resort was founded back in 2001 by Russ and Kay Culver. At the time, Carolyn spent a lot of hours traveling for her career in the music industry. She owned two dogs and needed a place to board them while she was away, so she brought them to Dogtown. Eventually, she became interested in becoming a partner of the business. However, Russ and Kay decided they wished to retire instead, so in 2009, Carolyn became the new owner. Her actions make it clear she has never looked back. They currently have dogs of all sizes, breeds and ages that are available for adoption. Taki is an adorable Chihuahua who is looking for his forever home. For people who are looking for a calm, loving pet, Eddie and Sammy are perfect. They are both senior dogs who still have a lot of love to give. Finding homes for senior dogs can be a bit of a challenge, 18 InMiddlebury Magazine | AUGUST 2013

according to Carolyn, but in spite of their age, these guys still have hearts of pure gold and would be easy keepers and strong lovers. If you aren’t looking to adopt but want to help out the cause, Dogtown will always gladly take volunteers. If you have dogs of your own and are looking for a place to take excellent care of them while you’re away, Dogtown is a wonderful choice. They have four people on staff, including a veterinary technician, as well as volunteers. They all work to keep the facilities clean and well-kept while also making sure that each dog is personally taken care of and given love to every single day. Carolyn is passionate about what she does and makes every effort to take excellent care of each dog that comes through Dogtown’s doors. You can be sure that every dog that spends time at Dogtown Resort will leave as happy and healthy as all dogs should be.

elcome to Middlebury Community Schools! We are ready to begin the 2013-14 school year and are excited to see our students. We know they have played, rested and relaxed over the summer and are ready to jump right in to learning! We have been preparing for the beginning of school over the summer by cleaning, painting, shining, polishing, and repairing parts of some of the buildings. Northridge Middle School will have new chillers to help control the learning environment for students and staff. The kitchen and cafeteria will also have some changes in new equipment and lines for service. The Northridge Middle School Pool will be out of service for a while for refurbishment, but hopefully will be up and running by the beginning of the second semester. Thanks to our custodians and maintenance personnel, our facilities are in good shape and will be ready to go when school begins.

gories at state competitions. We won the NLC All Sports trophy for Girls sports and came in second with the boys sports for this year. Our students continue to amaze our community with their strengths in academics and athletics. With all of the changes happening in our world, it is comforting to know that our local community supports all of our schools. We would like to thank all of our parents and community members for providing such a nurturing and safe environment in which our children are able to flourish. We know that our successes depend on the strengths our community builds within our families, staffs, and students. Thanks to all of you, we look forward to another great year in Middlebury Community Schools! -Jane Allen, Superintendent

Our teachers and administrators have also been planning for what lies ahead with learning in the classrooms. We will continue teaching the Common Core State Standards in all of our classrooms from kindergarten through grade twelve. The successes of our One-to-One initiative at Northridge High School will continue to bring the tools for 21st Century skills to our students. The academic successes of York Elementary and Northridge High School being named 4-Star schools gave us reason to celebrate this past year. We can also be very proud of all of the work all of our staff and students do every day to become lifelong learners. In addition to our academic successes, we have many extra-curricular activities that have brought success to our school community. We have become competitive and won awards at the state level in our band and choir programs at the high school and middle school. Our Science Olympiad teams and Math Counts continue to be high in the award winning cate20 InMiddlebury Magazine | AUGUST 2013

Each new student and parent/guardian will be required to attend a Laptop Orientation Session before receiving their computer. These sessions will start on the hour and run for the duration of the registration period. The last session will begin at 2 pm on the 8th and 8 pm on the 9th. Please allot an hour to an hour and a half to complete all of the required stations including the Laptop Orientation Session. No student will be issued a laptop without completing this required orientation so plan accordingly.

Other Registration Activities Will Include:

• Schedule distribution • Pictures taken and Student IDs • Distribution of Student Handbook • Computer access information • Parking tags • Completion of necessary paperwork • Medical permissions • Athletic information • Class Ring /yearbook information • Mealtime information • Building tours

Transportation Class – Super Mileage Team Northridge High School had a new class this past year where students’ primary mission was to design and build a high mileage vehicle to compete against other schools in the state. The transportation class is made up of engineering students who have taken at least 2 engineering courses at Northridge as part of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program. The class worked diligently on all aspects of the car from braking to drive train to the aluminum frame that was welded with help from Northridge students at the Elkhart Area Career Center. Students worked countless hours to design and build the car in order to participate in the big day at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis at the end of April. The Indiana Mathematics Science Technology Education Alliance’s (IMSTEA) Super Mileage Challenge had approximately 40 cars entered from 34 other schools in Indiana. This year the NHS Super Mileage Team competed in the stock class, which allows no modifications to the engine. After a long day at the track, the team was able to see their hard work pay off as they completed several qualifying runs (each at 10 laps around the 5/8 mile oval track) and took home the “Best New Team” trophy. Congratulations to the 2012-2013 NHS Super Mileage Team!

First Day of School

School Supplies

With the first day of school right around the corner, stores are stocked with new supplies and are offering great deals! You can find your child's supply list on our webpage, http://www.mcsin-k12.org/his/, by following the School Supplies link.

The first day of school is always exciting, but it can also be accompanied with some anxiousness, especially for new students. Students do not need to worry about finding their classrooms on the first day of school, though! As all the students arrive for school, they will be ushered into the gym where they will find their teacher (signs will be posted around the gym). After announcements, students will head to their classrooms with their teacher and class mates. Fourth graders will also visit the cafeteria in the morning to learn how lunch time "works," and will also take a building tour later in the day. Staff members will be very helpful during the first days of school to assist all students in finding their way around the building.

Back to School Night

Monday, August 12, 2013 Heritage Intermediate School will be hosting a Back to School Night from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 12, 2013. This is a great time for students and families to meet the teacher, tour the school, and learn about ways to be involved with the school. To help with hallway congestion, it is recommended that fourth graders attend between 6:00-6:45 p.m. and that fifth graders attend between 6:45-7:30. Can't come during the recommended time? That's ok! All teachers will be present for the duration of the event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Middlebury Elementary School News from Mr. Miller, Principal

P

arents, I am writing this month to encourage all of you to take part in our monthly PTO meetings. These meetings are a great way to get to know what is going on in the school and to also be involved in the school in a very intimate way. We want and need parents to be involved in what is happening. Studies show that schools with a large parent presence have students who learn better. We want that to be MES! I realize that families are busy with sports, music, church, etc. However, I am asking you to become a stakeholder in what is happening at MES. The PTO meetings are held in room 7, starting at 6:30 on the following dates: September 16th, October 21st, November 18th, December 16th, January 13th, February 10th, March 17th, April 21st, and May 19th. I look forward to having a great year with our PTO this year!

Lyndon Bontrager and Jade Pletcher received the Nolan Lawson Outstanding Attitude Award. They are pictured with Dave Lawson, Keli Lawson, and daughter Chandler Lawson.

School Picture Day

Friday, September 13th is set for pictures at MES. More information will be coming home soon. Smile...smile..smile!

Mum Sale

Our annual Mum Sale is set to kick off August 26th with orders and money being due on August 30th. Mum Sale Pick-Up is on September 14th at Homeland Gardens.

Fundraiser

We are having our big Club’s Choice fundraiser again this year. This fundraiser is a great way to support the students at the school by purchasing wrapping paper, kitchen items, household goods, and food items (think cookie dough, soup mixes, chocolates, Aunt Anne’s pretzels, and pizza!). All of the proceeds go back to directly help the students at the school. The fundraiser this year will run from September 6-23, 2013.

Author and musician Jim Gill performed at Middlebury Elementary and York Elementary in May of this past school year. It was a fun-loving time where students were entertained and encouraged to read.

York Elementary School News from Mrs. Buller, Principal

Four Stars for York In May, York Elementary School received the honor of being named a Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education. The honor was a thrill to staff, families and students who worked so hard to deserve such a distinction. This was the first time that York has received the award and what made it even sweeter was that York was the only elementary school in Elkhart County to receive the award this year.

The award recognizes schools that perform in the top 25th percentile of schools on the ISTEP+ and ECA state assessments. Northridge High School also joined York on the list. The two schools were recognized along with 311 schools statewide. So what is the key to the success? York staff members work tirelessly to provide rich learning experiences for the students. That includes partnering with families and creating a place where kids want to be. York provides a solid academic program in a school that feels more like a family than an institution. York pays attention to each and every student and what they need to be excited about learning. As Mrs. Buller, principal says, “We work hard and we play hard. That is what creates excited, successful learners.

Announcing New Owners! Sharon and Eric Houser, shown left with daughters Heather, Sara, and Emily, took over ownership of the Village Inn in June. Sharon worked there over the past 14 years. She enjoys good old-fashioned cooking and talking with the customers, so she was excited about the opportunity to become the newest owner of Middlebury’s oldest restaurant.

Sharon and Eric aren’t planning on making any major changes other than adding casseroles to the daily specials, and featuring a different homemade soup every Tuesday: stop in and you may find that taco, tomato basil, cheeseburger, or chicken tortilla soup just might be on the menu. Remember when

Shoups Celebrate 90 Years with Cardinal Buses by Tammy Tilley

I

n 1923, Branston and Gertrude Shoup purchased a bus line that offered service between Middlebury and Topeka in their five-passenger Model T touring car.

Second generation owner John Shoup continued the service as well as expanded the line, changing the name from Middlebury Bus Lines to Shoup Buses, Inc. In 1954, they purchased Cardinal Buses, and thus began their charter bus business. Today, John can be seen in the office on some days, but most of the daily business is run by third generation Dan, Matt, and Becky and her husband. Matt clarifies that instead of running trips to Goshen or Shipshewana, Cardinal Buses now runs throughout the United States, with most of their business coming from school field trips and sporting events. Both John and Matt affirm their love for the business. “It is a family business,” said John. I was born into it, and so were Matt and Dan.”

John and Margaret Shoup’s chain saw sculpture of a cardinal in front of their home.

In typical humorous fashion, John discussed how bus tours have changed through the years: “At one time the senior tours were a big thing, but that’s kind of slimmed down.... The newer senior is different, more independent. He likes to buy a motorhome and a poodle and take off.” Congratulations to John, Margaret, and their family for a successful 90 years, and all of Middlebury wishes you good health and many more years of business with Cardinal Buses.
