A huge thank you to Avelyn Angus for their generous donation for this year’s fundraiser heifer. Avelyn Sweet’Thang 100’21 is a daughter of Everblack Vision 134E herdsire that has done a great job for them. Every year the Northern Club raises funds for the club that goes towards many things for them including the Junior projects that are purchased at the sale.

Fundraiser Heifer Auction Procedure 1. The final bid in each round will denote the amount of that bidder’s donation. e.g. Round 1 - Final Bid is $300.00 to Randy Mitchell. Randy’s donation is $300.00. Round 2 - Final bid is $250.00 to Tom Jones. Tom’s donation is $250.00. Round 3 - The female is re-auctioned on a downward scale until no further bids are received at the low of $10.00. 2. Each $10 purchased (donated) represents once chance in the final draw. e.g. Randy Mitchell has 30 chances. Tom Jones has 25 chances and so on down the scale to the final $10 donation worth one chance each. 3. One ticket for every $10 donated, bearing the contributor’s name will be put into a draw barrel. 4. At the end of the sale, one ticket will be drawn, with the person winning the heifer.

JUNIOR INCENTIVES • Juniors are eligible to receive 10% off the purchase of one animal. • Juniors that go on to win Grand or Reserve champion at their 4H show with their purchased animal will receive $400 for champion and $250 for reserve credit for their next purchase at the northern select. • Juniors that go on to win Grand or Reserve champion at their 4H club show will receive one of either a coat or a pair of track pants with the northern select logo. • Champion backdrop photos must be sent in and be displayed in the next year catalogue to receive the credits and swag. • Juniors will automatically enter for a $1000 Rob Holowaychuk Memorial Fund in 2022 Sale. • Please email all pictures with the description of your winnings to o.b.i@shaw.ca

OBI WELCOME

O

nce again it is my pleasure to invite you to the 43rd Annual Northern Select Sale. Another year has passed with all families having to make decisions at their operations with the lack of moisture this spring and summer. It was a hot summer and when travelling to all the farms, the cattle sure did look amazing this year with the hard grass around. The cows handled this summer so well and the calves had that extra growth to them. The bred heifers sure kept their condition well. A lot of positives in the cattle industry with the market staying so strong as well. This year again, the consignors have let me dig deep into their herds and you will be able to analyze them. When going to each operation I discuss game plans for this sale and the future of their marketing and promoting and then we sit and negotiate which animals will do that for each program. For 42 years now this event has produced many top end animals for their new owners. Buy with confidence with these operations. We will again be doing an Open House this year from Friday 2 PM to 5 PM where all can come to the CRE to evaluate the cattle if they don’t feel comfortable coming sale day and then can either bid online or call OBI or any of the consignors to help them with their selections. We will follow the CRE regulations put forth to the Northern Alberta Angus Club for the sale. We will be as safe as we can at the sale. All of these regulations will be finalized the week prior the sale and please do call me or any of the consignors for these. I would like to thank again the club and all the supporters of this event last year; your commitment and loyalty in this sale is second to none. If myself or any member of the sale staff can assist you, please feel free to call us. See you in Camrose on the 20th. Mark Holowaychuk OBI LIVESTOCK LTD.

SERVICE: EXPOSED FROM APRIL 20 TO JUNE 15 TO U2 ACCLAIM 144G. DUE LATE JANUARY. Well, I guess Mark has followed in his dad's footsteps. He has developed the silver tongue enabling him to extract females for the Northern Sale that we would prefer to keep in herd! The donor dam to 15H has been our second highest earning cow to bear the Everblack name. Eight sons through our bull sale, most notably the high seller in 2017 to J Lazy A for $19,000, and the lead off bull in 2019 selling to Bill and Pat Bateman. A top selling daughter to Clegg Angus through our spring sale as well as 2 daughters in herd, one being an extremely high-quality full sister in the open heifer pen. The sire BAR-E-L Stamina has raised the bar at our place, exceeding all expectations and siring cattle with ease of fleshing, exceptional feet, performance, and eye appeal. 15H is sweet fronted, hairy, and built like a wedge. Bred to calve late January to the Bravo son we acquired in 2019, U2 Acclaim 144G.

SERVICE: EXPOSED FROM APRIL 20 TO JUNE 15 TO PEAK DOT COLOSSAL 126H. DUE LATE JANUARY. 60H is a Tank. She can convert forage to flesh as easy as any heifer we have raised. Her overall rib capacity is massive, while still being very sound to the ground. We have been extremely happy with the U2 Nighttrain females. They have risen to the top of our herd as our power cows with good feet and udders who raise marketable sons that the cowboys like. The dam JZT 201C is one of our top young cows in her class. Her first 2 offspring were sold to Craig and Ben Dumontel of Claydon SK. Lets see if the old timers remember 60H’s fifth dam…. back in 1991 a cow named WhiskeyJack Travelling Lucy 2Z sold through this very sale. Lucy 2Z was the mother of a highly maternal bull named Everblack Masterplan 007 who sold to Dwajo and Minburn Angus. Goes to show how this sale has stood the test of time and continues to produce productive cattle for generations. 60H is due to calve late January to our pick of the calving ease bulls at Peak Dot this spring, Peak Dot Colossal 126H.

At age 12 she has 10 registered calves in the Angus herdbook, and her 2021 heifer calf is in the replacement pen at home. She is a frame 5, 1400lb cow who was one of the first to calve again this year. The sire side of this gem of a heifer is none other than the breed great, Musgrave Stunner. If you’ve travelled around the prairies to a few herds like I have in the past few years, you probably noticed that Stunner progeny were always deep, thick and very easy fleshing. They’re flatout good cattle. With Stunner, HF Grizzly, Sandy Bar Advantage, and DMM Dynasty in the pedigree, you can’t go wrong with this heifer, and to make it even more exciting, a Jan. 30th due date to Musgrave’s current walking herd sire, LD Grazer. On the dam’s side a stacked pedigree that includes New Design, Scotchcap, Kodiak and Masterplan. This heifer is deep and soggy, while still being angular and feminine. I can’t say enough about the dam, Duchess 36Z, a frame 5, 1400lb top producer. She holds her condition as good as any cow I’ve ever seen, while raising the biggest calf 2 years running, and calving in the first week of calving season. 9 years old with 8 registered progeny. Lots of milk, growth and fertility from this cow family, and her 2021 calf is the biggest and best heifer in the replacement pen. 2H is AI’ed to S Chisum 255 for an early February calf, a rare mating that should really ring the bell.

Powerful as they come yet as sweet made as you can construct one. She is a pleasure to handle; definitely kid friendly and our crew will be sad to see her go. Soft haired, big ribbed and long sided as well as extremely flexible when you get her in motion. We acquired some Young Dale Jullian semen from our good friends at Harprey Farms and couldn’t be happier with the resulting progeny. He has bred true to type; low birth weight and performance. Juniors remember the Northern incentive program, as well we (Pedersen Livestock) also have junior incentives if you choose to show this female. 17J is a maternal sister to our 77H bred heifer. Here is one of the first Rendezvous 8180 daughters to sell and she is flat out good! She is the only one we will be parting with from our program as we think very highly of the calf crop he has sired this year. Rendezvous is a well-balanced herdbull that is moderate framed, deep middled, wide hipped, great hair, large scrotal development, strong footed and owns that unmistakable herdbull character. TipTop 11J and her Mother have been a standout pair and have caught the eye of many visitors this summer. 28C is a brood cow that checks all the boxes and one that you would want to build a herd around. The TipTop cow family has been a cornerstone in our herd with many daughters retained and also, many who have been selected and gone on to do well for other producers. When a herdsire has produced close to 1200 registered offspring, you know he must be pretty darn good and this Bank Note daughter is no exception. She is a big ribbed, moderate framed, easy-doing female in an overall attractive package. On the bottom side, 34J traces back to Roseholm Dyna 92X, a purchase of Austin’s at this very sale…the 2010 edition. She has been designated an elite dam since 2016 and has every daughter and several granddaughters in production for us. A nice fancy heifer that is as structural sound as they come, 2J is just out of a first calver that worked her heart out. This heifer is out of our Zara cow family which is one of our top cow families that we have had when we started in 1982, to last that long they must be doing something right. The sire Hostage was one of Jesse’s top picks at Hamilton Farms bull sale and he has not disappointed with his first calve crop, low BW and some performance behind them, Hostage has great feet and good disposition and has passed that same trait on to his off spring. Looking for that Jr, prospect or top end replacement female with proven pedigree Zara 2J definitely fits the bill.

A heifer that is hard to get rid of as she is one of the last Natural heifer calves out of our Really Windy bull. A maternal sister sold to Rossman farms which they are very pleased with. The Windy’s have been making great females, with nice front ends, volume of body and nice hair. Juniors make sure you look at this sweetie of a heifer as she is nice and quiet and easy to work with and loves to be scratched. As a bonus will throw in a couple straws of Hostage semen the sire of 2J if you wish.

Is an exceptional heifer with a lot of power. A heifer that will reassure you and whisper in your ear: “everything is going to be alright” as you go to bed. She has tons of depth, hip and width in her top. Not forgetting to mention hair! She’s got as much hair as cousin IT from the Adam’s family! The Erica cow family makes up the majority of my herd and were the ones that started my herd. Her mother has been a good producer with calves weaning off near the top of the group every year. 53E is a deep-bodied cow with a nice sized frame and good udder. The sire Foundation gives his calves a nice size and presence while putting a solid foot underneath them. You can say Foundation puts a good “foundation” on his calves.

After viewing Enhance in Billings in the fall of 2019, we utilized him across the board in 2020. The calves came easy, are born light and demonstrate explosive growth. 2J weighed 78 pounds at birth posted a 205 day weight of 796 pounds. Her dam, a two year heifer by Werner Flat Top, is a solidly constructed female demonstrating big capacity and rib, big square hips and a beautifully structured udder has done an outstanding job on her first calf. Outcross pedigree, great performance and solid phenotype on offer here.

The best things come in small packages Right? 707J is a moderate smooth made heifer. She is the complete package of style, performance, and a whole lot of personality. Being sired by a Vision Unanimous grandson has given this heifer the width and dimension that we all love to see in our angus heifer calves. Reigning down from the Pride 707 cow family must be acknowledged also. This family started an incredible foundation for us years ago that we still carry on in our herd today. With very square balanced udders, those angular front ends and incredible weaning weights this is one of those can’t miss opportunities.

Red Cinder Rosette 17J, “Wren”, will be a female sought after sale day. You can bank on these Power Eye daughters from our program; these Power Eye progeny are excelling in the show ring and breeding world. Two females that have rose to the top in our program are Red Cinder Cheta 93C the Champion at the 1st Annual Futurity Junior Extravaganza at Red Roundup and Red Cinder Freyja 29E many times champion the last 3 years and a Top 10 Finalist at Agribition’s RBC Supreme and Alberta Supreme. We feel that Wren has all the pieces to be the next one, her mother was a Red Cinder Pursuit 101S daughter that had a square udder and tons of maternal and feminine features. We lost her mother this past winter so this will be the last of her progeny available. A solid investment coming from Cinder that will impress many cattlemen. We’d like to retain the right for one future flush at buyers’ convenience.

Red Cinder Rosette 217J is well balanced with a cool disposition. Her pedigree is an outcross mating from some outstanding maternal genetics. Freyja 29Y, Cockburn Cora, and Pursuit 101S to name a few proven producer’s that can be found in her family tree. Rosette 217J is a good footed female with tons of dimension and length. She goes back to Jas Diplomat; which is a bull that made some exceptional bulls and females. He put tons of extension throughout their front ends and made them soft and “wedgy”. A really nice little package that is backed by some really cool breeding.

Red Cinder Eugenie 23J is just a March 11 baby, moderate in stature and carries a ton of depth to her rib. An extremely quiet, easy doing female that we feel would make a great 4H project. Her dam has a real solid udder with great attachment and teat placement. She’s also produced some calves with added volume and muscle. Dwajo Strongbar; a bull we’ve used for a few years. Has proven himself through the consistency of his calves, in terms of their structural correctness and eye appeal. A real sweetheart of a calf that’ll only get better with time!

Here is our first Red Box heifer in the offering and OH boy does that photo just make your mouth water. Guess what; she is that good! Sparkles 442J reigns from one of the foundation cow families on our place, the Sparkles line. 442J is sweet made, ultra-feminine and has a gentle disposition. Her blood, red hide never hurt anyone’s feeling either! The dam 422C is a zeromaintenance kind of cow who you forget is out there till you spot her calf. She’s no stranger to the Northern being the dam of our high selling heifer in the Northern in 2018 to Brooklyn Holt. 442J is easy on the eyes and as good as that cheat meal you’ve been craving all week. Keep your fork the best is yet to come here! Parent verified.

Sparkles 452J will be one of a handful of Red Box heifers to sell in Canada this fall. She is a powerhouse of a heifer! Thick, deep, and sound in her structure with a solid foot. I won’t deny that we fell into the buzz around Red Box 55C two years ago and figured why not see what he can do; and I won’t lie I tried not to think about the cost of the semen when I was A.I.ing cows last spring (ha-ha). The dam 452E was on the list of chosen ones for that mating and we are beyond impressed with the result. She’s a moderate framed cow with an excellent foot and a very tidy udder. The Serengetti 803C daughters are surpassing all expectations and are some of our best young cows. A very wise breeder once told me find the cow family’s that work for you and keep every daughter you can. The Sparkles line has been no fail for us and with so many daughters in herd we feel we can let this one go. These are the kind that raise herd bulls! Parent verified.

She’s so soggy, wide based, excellent footed and has a rear end that mirrors something of a Simmental…and yes, she’s parent verified (ha-ha). The dam 73E is another hard-working Serengetti 803C daughter who really knocked it out of this world on this one. The maternal grand dam 173C is the definition of a land hippo and has been admired by many visitors. A daughter of 173C sold to Mustang Land & Cattle in last year’s sale. The Sparkles family strikes again! I truly believe it’s a testament to any cow family when three out of four in a sale come from that same lineage. Sparkles 412J is blood red, fancy and ready to be your new best friend. We purchased a package of Coming In Hot semen through Red Round up in 2019…barely. Lesson learned for us and that ‘anonymous’ phone bidder…never think anything will get cheaper when there is less opportunities to get it bought. Coming in Hot adds a fresh genetic twist and makes them flashy! The dam 422A is a model Red Angus cow with a phenomenal udder and a kind disposition. Almost all of her daughters have been put back into our herd. A daughter 422D had our high selling heifer in last year’s sale to Excel Ranches. Bid with confidence…the proof is in the pudding! We are thrilled to be new consignors to the Northern Select Sale. Mark has chosen two dark red beauties to be the first ever females released form our herd! Laney 13J is one we have had our eye on all summer. Naturally attractive with lots of rib and powerful presence. Her dam was purchased from Maple Ridge Acres Dispersal in 2018. 23Z has a very feminine look and excellent black foot with her offspring have been consistent in performance. 13J is one of the few females offered from Red Duff Red Blood 18114 this year. Get on the ground floor with the Red Blood calves, they are sure impressive all fall. No doubt his excellent phenotype has been passed onto her. 13J is a gentle heifer ideal for any young showman. Her young dam produced a powerful bull calf (Red Gillett Jack 27H) on her first try, he was the first pick out of the bull pen. Red TNF Meg 96F we obtained in a package of females we got from Combest Red Angus and they are sure exceeding expectations. Her sire Powder Keg 32F has given us a fancy and uniform group of calves. He has a strong foot and abundant muscling. His maternal side is used within Allison flush program. 12J has a promising future backed with proven genetics.

This female was shown at the Alberta Junior Angus show in Bashaw and will be at Farmfair. She is also sired by non - other than Red U-2 Foreigner 413B. Her dam came from Vikse embryos we bought from Red Round-Up. Her dam has a clean, superior udder. This female would make an excellent Junior show prospect or a reliable cow.

Imagine my surprise when I realized that 32J was red……sired by a home raised son of Werner Flat Top 4136 and out of daughter of SAV Net Worth, I had forgotten that the maternal great grand dam on both sides was a red cow that I purchased in 1997 from Ron and Jan Wiltshire of Hamiota, Manitoba. Here is sweet feminine heifer with plenty of capacity and style that offers the red sector outlier genetics. Her three year Net Worth dam is a moderate framed female whose Flat Top daughter sold to LLB Angus in last year’s version of the Northern Select. With Flat Top and Net Worth genetics, any red breeder looking for fresh genetics should seriously consider considering this heifer.

It was fitting to talk to Dwajo Angus and we put our minds together and thought of GDAR Dutch 1508 semen to offer for the Rob Holowaychuk Memorial Fund. This was a bull dad bought for Dwajo on one of his many trips to Montana to find new and exciting herdsires for his clients. GDAR Dutch 1508 did an amazing job for Dwajo and if you talk to Joanne, the Dutch females are some of the best at the farm past and present. Thanks again to the entire Dwajo crew for this generous donation to a fund that will continue to give the Juniors some great opportunities down the road.
