Regional CEO Message

WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL ISSUE OF SHAPING SOUTH ASIA

“Welcome to Shaping South Asia, our new newsletter aimed at keeping our clients abreast of our regional business operations and some of the exciting projects in which we are involved. This region within the Meinhardt Group extends from Pakistan and India down through Southeast Asia. We have existing offices in many of the countries in this region, but even where we have not yet established a presence we are already actively involved in projects, such as in the Maldives, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, as can be seen from some of the projects featured here.

John Pollard Regional CEO, South Asia j o h n p @ m e i n h a rd t . n e t

While we continue to expand our resources and capabilities in our traditional Civil & Structural and Mechanical & Electrical engineering, we are also aggressively expanding our Project Management, Lighting Design, Façade Engineering, Sustainability (ESD)/LEED and our newly-formed Transportation consultancy services throughout the region. Globally, the Meinhardt Group is working to expand and diversify our Infrastructure and Environmental services, in which we have had some excellent project wins in India and Singapore. To be involved in these emerging markets as Regional CEO is an exciting and rewarding challenge as we build upon our long-established network of offices to support our new areas of endeavour.”

Interview with 01 Tell us a bit about your career development at Meinhardt and what your latest role as deputy managing director of Meinhardt Singapore entails?

Kam Mun Wai Deputy Managing Director, Meinhardt Singapore k m w @ m e i n h a rd t . c o m . s g

Apart from the traditional principal consultants, specialist consultants also now play a significant role to the design. We see that there are many opportunities in the market for specialist services which we can develop into and at the same time grow our business.

I joined Meinhardt in 1995 as an engineer and was fortunate to be given the opportunity to work on several exciting and challenging projects under the guidance of Dr Shahzad Nasim. These projects included Capital Square, One Raffles Link/CityLink, One Raffles Quay, The Sail and the more recent Marina Bay Financial Centre. I was promoted to Director in 2004. I have been leading a Structural Team since 2002 and became Joint Division Manager of the Civil & Structural Division in 2009. As the Deputy Managing Director, I will be responsible for the performance of both Civil & Structural (C&S) and Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Divisions, as well as involved in corporate planning and administration. It is a big challenge for me moving forward and I relish the trust and opportunity the Group has given me. 02

Who are the leaders supporting you?

I am fortunate to have a strong and competent team of leaders in the office. Currently both the C&S and M&E divisions are separately managed by the Joint Division Managers. Budi Lee and Tan Chin Hock are looking after C&S while Francis Koh and Lui Chi On are jointly managing the M&E division. We recently set up a Group Design Team in both divisions, led by Dr. Juneid Qureshi for C&S and Mei Yeow for M&E. Their teams will focus primarily on providing technical advice and guidance for our projects, assuring the solutions we adopt are practical, cost effective and sustainable. The C&S and M&E teams are managed by their respective Team Leaders for the day-to-day running of the projects (see chart below). They are, in turn, supported by Deputy Team Leaders and Principal Engineers. I am happy to see more and more younger engineers in the office coming forward to contribute and taking on responsibilities. Some of them have been identified and will be groomed for the next generation leadership.

03 Do you have an operating philosophy for how the Singapore teams should serve clients and handle projects?

Professional fees are getting more and more competitive, both in Singapore and the region. The best service we can offer our clients is to do a good and professional job; nothing beats that. Long- term relationships with clients are built up through trust, good support and technical competency. Fees no doubt are a key consideration in the current market conditions, but being able to deliver quality service would ensure we stay in the forefront of the industry and have repeat customers. Clients invest a lot in their projects, and as consultants we must endeavour to help them get the best returns on their investments. In every project we take on, it is in our core value to put in our best effort for the job and hopefully meet our client's expectations, and better yet exceed them. We have been successful but there are also times we have not but we have learned and have become better engineers. My philospohy on handling projects is therefore very simple - be sincere to our clients, understand their needs fully and do the best we can.

04

How do you plan to grow the Singapore business and enhance client relationships?

Meinhardt has made its name in the past 30 years by offering integrated services in C&S and M&E engineering for building projects. We are very fortunate to have successfully completed many high-rise and iconic buildings not only in Singapore, but also in many parts of the world. Over the years, we have grown and expanded our capabilities to include infrastructure planning and design, facade engineering, transportation, aviation, marine, geotechnical engineering, fire, specialist lighting and environmentally sustainable design. We have also successfully ventured into other service sectors like project management, masterplanning, due diligence, feasibility studies and construction supervision. "We recognise that ... at the same time grow our business." There is need to offer a broader spectrum of intergrated services to our clients as projects are becoming more sophisticated. Apart from the traditional principal consultants, specialist consultants also now play a significant role to the design. We see that there are many opportunities in the market for specialist services which we can develop into and at the sametime grow our business. We want to be a one-stop servcice provider; this will enable us to support our clients and their needs more efficiently.

05 As Meinhardt expands its footprint across the globe, how do you make sure that it retains a firm foothold in the Singapore market where it has a long history and tradition and many good clients?

Meinhardt has more than 30 offices worldwide. Its headquarters is in Singapore where the Global CEO sits. Singapore is where our roots are. For the last 37 years, we have been very active in the local industry, and we will continue to do so for many more years. While the Group is expanding into the global market, my primary focus is still going to be Singapore. We will continue to serve our existing clients and at the same time, we will explore opportunities to develop and work with new clients both in the public and private sectors.

06

Give us a few reasons why clients should work with Meinhardt?

We have what good project teams and clients need, namely: 1. Dedicated, creative and competent professionals. 2. A solid track record in Singapore. 3. A fully integrated engineering services. We are a one-stop innnovations and value-add provider. 4. Good project directors who are focused on long-term relationships 5. A clear and effective decision-making process.

The 37,000 sq m cruise terminal and port service centre is designed by Reiser + Umemoto, RUR Architecture PC from New York, and local architect, Fei & Cheng Associates. Meinhardt is able to provide good design solutions for the façade while still maintaining the architectural design intent.
