Winter Weather Driving Tips Think another snow-pocalypse is on the way? Whether the forecast is filled with forbidding ice or gloomy drizzle, it’s up to you to make smart driving decisions. Assess road conditions where you are and err on the side of caution. Your safety is more important than perfect attendance! And remember, it is your responsibility to contact your professors to let them know why you missed class. If you do decide to drive, be sure to follow safe driving practices. Get your car a winter tune-up. Pack an emergency kit. Check that your spare tire is properly inflated. Don’t allow your fuel to get too low. Clean as much snow off your car as you can before you drive. You don’t want it blowing off the hood and impeding your vision! Buckle your seat belt. Drive slower than usual and leave plenty of room to brake. Brake gently to avoid skidding. Remember that bridges, ramps, and overpasses are likely to freeze first. If you skid on ice 1) do not panic 2) take your foot off the accelerator 3) look where you want to go 4) turn into the skid, back towards straight, in the direction you want to go. You are always eligible for on-campus shelter if you do not feel safe driving home from campus in a storm or other inclement weather. Simply contact the Office of Residence Life and Commuter Student Services at 654-1058 during regular business hours or campus police at 654-1025 after hours.
