CHARLES LADSON A thriving young artist that calls Macon home, an upcoming exhibit at the Musuem of Arts & Sciences will feature his work along with six other hand picked artists by the talented painter. BY LEILA REGAN-PORTER

The time when artists discover their incredible talent varies wildly. For many, it is an early knowledge that there is something inside them that sets them apart from other human beings, and gives them an unbearable need to create and connect to their art. But for Macon-born Charles Ladson, 38, the realization that he was born to be an artist came a lot later. Not that there wasn’t enough encouragement at home. With a mother and maternal grandfather both with artist backgrounds, there was plenty of art fodder to feed a young painter’s mind. “My mom was an art history major at college and so growing up she always had an interest in arts,” says Ladson. “We had lots of reading and literature on the arts and like any number of other kids you draw, we all draw when we’re little, she encouraged that. “My grandfather, her dad, was a hobbyist painter. Through those two, there was quite a bit of encouragement. Maybe they didn’t really intend me to practice this as a profession, but the appreciation for the arts led to an encouragement, and that interest of mine.” Although Ladson continued to paint through high school, and even sell a few of his pieces at that time, it wasn’t until he was at the College of Charleston, “to study god knows what,” that he received the concrete encouragement that led to attending art school. “I found myself drawn to the art department there, and was encouraged by some of the professors there to apply to an art school in Savannah,” the New Yorkbased the School of Visual Arts. This was all a self-proclaimed “wild” time for Ladson, who ended up being transferred to New York to finish his art degree along with the rest of his class when the school closed its doors due to a lawsuit with the Savannah College of Art and Design. While he stresses that it was “a great experience,” Ladson is also quick to point out, “To tell you the truth, I was maybe glad to get out of there when I did,” happy to opt

06 APRIL 5 - 19, 2013

for the “style and speed” of cities like Charleston, Savannah and, of course, Macon. It’s not always an easier way for an artist, he says, but it’s worked for him. “I like Macon. I like the pace here, I love my friends and family. I struggled to get my work out there but slowly and surely it does get out there one way or another.” Ladson’s art has surely not suffered from its location, and indeed, the artist himself points out that he thrives on the lack of distractions. His moving, isolated scenes tend to appear as overlapped stories with missing elements, which is more due to Ladson’s technique as it is to his planned narrative. “I never start a painting thinking of a story or any sort of narrative at all, really,” he explains. “I’m really just playing around with shapes and certain objects and interiors, and they’re constantly unfolding and changing. A painting that I’d say is finished, that I’ve ceased working on, there’s probably been a dozen other images and stories beneath it. I’ve just happened to finish at that image and there’s not necessarily a particular story or narrative in mind. Though people seem to find their own stories or narratives in them, and that’s fine by me. I just set up a scene and people can read it how they see fit.” Ladson’s attention to the shapes and movement of his pieces are what gives them their distinct look that has made Ladson such a sought-after artist, with Atlanta’s Tew Galleries and Asheville’s Blue Spiral 1 hosting showings and selling Ladson’s work for up to $6,500. His technique also means that the piece will evolve in many unpredictable ways before reaching their conclusion, and few would believe all the different scenes and figures that lie underneath the finished product. “I can work for a week or two weeks developing some figure that’s doing something and then all of a sudden something else develops on the page and that figure and whatever she’s doing or he’s doing doesn’t work any more and I’ve got to paint them out and maybe a piece of them

stays on the canvas for whatever reason,” he explains. “One week it could be a fairly fully developed image as an interior and then all of a sudden the interior isn’t working and I’m turning it into an exterior landscape. They just evolve and move and change and I really never know where they’re going, I just only know when they are done. And I don’t know how I know that they’re done, I just, all of a sudden I have nothing more to say on the canvas and I’m pleased with the feel of it. Or maybe I just tired of working on the damn thing.”

Ladson is a sought-after artist, with Atlanta’s Tew Galleries and Asheville’s Blue Spiral 1 hosting exhibits and selling Ladson’s work for up to $6,500. As for influences, Ladson cites the British school that includes Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, a group that was introduced to him by British-born School of Visual Arts professor Anthony Tallitser. While Ladson’s style on the face of things may differ wildly from the likes of Freud and Bacon, his pieces share the emotion, both raw and sad, that so frequently emitted from the great artists. Today, however, Ladson stays away from art and artists who could sway his influence, instead preferring to look inward. “That’s who I looked at when I was younger, in my formidable years, when I was figuring our what I like about painting,” he says. “Nowadays I don’t really look so much at ArtWorld magazines or anything like that. I just find it easier and less distracting not to because there’s so much out there.” For this same reason, Ladson finds himself unattached to the art scene of Macon, which, while he appreciates for the support (“I’m not suggesting that Macon isn’t supportive of the arts; I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t”), doesn’t hold the appeal for himself as an artist. “I do get out occasionally to art events and functions, not as much as I should or used

to when I first came to town. But I’m kind of a homebody,” he explains. “For some people I know that it is [necessary] to be more caught up in that and draw from it inspiration from that and ideas. But for me, I don’t really find it that necessary; I find it to be a distraction. I haven’t had any shortage of ideas or motivation to work in the five years that I’ve been really working here in Macon. Maybe if that day would come I might reassess my situation, but for now, I’m good to go.” Macon is about to receive more of Ladson and his work than ever before, as the Macon Museum of Arts and Sciences prepares to host an exhibition of seven artists emerging from the Southeast, with Ladson leading the way. Ladson even had the opportunity to help discover and suggest artists, including Jeffrey Whittle, the gallery director and an academic professional at the University of Georgia, and Jeremy Hughes, whose vivid pieces can be spied at The Rookery. Other artists showing will include Brian Hitselberger and Taehoon Kim, both from Georgia, and Bo Hughins and Kyungmin Park, both from Alabama. Susan Welsh, Executive Director at the Museum of Arts & Sciences, has been a fan of Ladon’s for several years, since she saw his work at Wesleyan College. “His work, of course, has evolved quite a bit since then – but what I loved then still is very present in his work now,” she says. “Regardless of the subject, there’s an Alfred Hitchcock styled narrative in every painting that is very contemporary and uniquely ‘Charles Ladson.’” To Welsh, Ladson’s recognition has been a long-time coming and well deserved. “Charles is highly regarded in the Southeast for his extraordinary work – by his contemporaries, art patrons, museum curators, and gallery owners,” she says, going on to speak of the other artists featured in the exhibition. “These emerging artists are producing incredibly strong work and we’re anxious to introduce them to central Georgia.

Bait and Switch uch to the consternation of some of my Democratic friends, I have always favored non-partisan local elections. There is nothing partisan about garbage pickups or removal of dilapidated houses. Just as I have voted twice in the past to shrink the size of City Council (and many readers will be shocked to learn that Council unanimously voted to reduce ourselves from 15 to 11 members several years ago but the legislature refused to act on our request), I have never wavered in saying publicly that local elections should be nonpartisan. As always, however, the devil is in the details. I publicly supported consolidation last year even though I had a few qualms about the specifics. For example, the law mandates that we must reduce our combined expenditures by 20% in the first five years. No one expects that to happen, but I could never get anyone to answer my question about what takes place when that goal isn’t met. Surely we don’t un-consolidate? The newly-elected governing body can vote to override that detail at the time but what happens if, with an eye toward their re-election chances, they don’t vote to do so? However, I put that question aside in the larger interests of consolidation and voted for it. One detail that did please me was the provision that an elected sheriff, rather than an appointed police chief, would direct public safety. The new Mayor/Chairman has an almost autonomous job description and the commission can’t fire a department head. With an elected sheriff who answers to the public, a wayward official could be ousted at the ballot box while a police chief would be safe so long as he/she keeps the new Mayor/Chairman happy. That was an important point for me and was one of the reasons I voted in favor of consolidation. Similarly, a lot of people voted in favor because the legislation provides for partisan elections. Now, six months after we have voted to consolidate, the Republicans in our legislative delegation have changed the law to call for non-partisan elections without a public vote. Perhaps even worse, they have also changed our November 2013 election

to July. In Bibb County, our last July voter turnout was 40.34% while our last November voter turnout was 73.28%. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out which party benefits from a lower voter turnout – the Republicans (that’s not opinion but documented fact). In fact, the U.S. Justice Department last year prevented Augusta/Richmond County from switching their November elections to July for that very reason, finding that, “moving Augusta-Richmond’s mayoral and commission races from November to July would have a retrogressive effect on the ability of minority voters to elect candidates of choice to office.” Further, the Justice Department found that even the intent of the legislation was discriminatory. In our situation, it is instructive that, of the five Republican legislators who sponsored and forced this change over the objections of their Democratic colleagues, only one of the five actually lives in Bibb County. The others were given small slivers of Bibb County in the redistricting process in order to gain a majority of our delegation. City Council currently has 13 Democrats and two Republicans. Under the new boundaries, four districts are Republican, four are Democratic, and one is barely Democratic. According to one person whom I trust who was in the room when the deal was made, the plan is to elect one Democrat who will vote with the Republicans, thus ensuring their control of local government. You don’t need to look further than the current campaign contributions to learn who had a tailor-made district gerrymandered for that very purpose. And remember that this Republican control will be in a county in which Mitt Romney received less than 40% of the vote. If you’ve not looked at the new district boundaries drawn by our delegation, do yourself a favor and go to: http://www.macon.com/2012/03/23/195739 4/interactive-map-revised-macon.html. Enlarge the map roughly in the center where I-16 and I-75 intersect. Notice how many neighborhoods have been sliced in half and how many times the lines cross an expressway rather than unify a community that has

historically been populated by residents of who share many attributes. What does Bloomfield have in common with Intown? Or Northside Drive at Riverside with Guy Paine Road? Or Middle Georgia Regional Airport and its surrounding industrial development with Upper River Road? Yet the most affluent neighborhoods in north Macon have been kept intact. The only elected incumbent in the city or county who lives in a district that has no other incumbent is one of Council’s two Republicans. I actually like and respect her, but could her new district be a complete accident, particularly when our only other Republican long ago announced she would not be running for re-election? I re-iterate that I support non-partisan local elections. But I do not favor deceiving the voters. If our Republican legislators had placed that item in last year’s consolidation bill and the voters approved it, I would be front and center in applauding our new nonpartisan elections. They knew, however, that a majority of the city would not accept such a change. For them to achieve their goal in this manner is a bait and switch of the worst kind. I suspect the U. S. Justice Department might agree with my opinion.

Alternatives Coming To Bibb For Education

There is no question that the state of our local educational system in Bibb County is in a shambles. Thank goodness s there may be some light at the end of the tunnel and this time it may not be a freight train that has a direct path towards the students and taxpayers. Over the past two years, since the coronation of King Dallemand, the Bibb County School System has not only been a local joke, but thanks to him and the propaganda machine he put into place a statewide, nationwide and worldwide joke. Some folks have started to take notice… I would guess that largely in part to the gigantic dropout rate of the public school system, The Magic Johnson (Yes…..THAT Magic Johnson) Bridges cape Center was opened in Bibb County as an alternative for students who can’t make it in the mainstream public school systems. According to Principal and Director of the Center Lamonica Sanford, Middle Georgia was also chosen as the location because, “Middle Georgia has urban centers, including Macon and Columbus. Students have access to public transportation to be able to get to a Magic Johnson Bridgescape center in these cities. In the next few months we will open centers in Savannah and Augusta. All of these cities are listed by the U.S. Census Bureau as being within the top 14 metropolitan areas in Georgia. We will also open two satellite campuses at Fort Gordon (Augusta) and Fort Stewart (Savannah) Youth Challenge Academies.” But Bridgescape is different than other schools of its toe that are already in Middle Georgia such as the Elaine Lucas EL Academy. Bridgescape is totally FREE! Yes… you read that right. It’s free… Ms. Sanford states, “The Magic Johnson Bridgescape Center is a program of Provost Academy Georgia. Provost Academy Georgia is a public high school open to all students who are eligible for grades 9 - 12. There is no tuition for the program or the school. As with most schools, there may be minimal costs to families for optional extracurricular activities and fieldtrips, and peripherals like binders, pens, etc. In cases where a student does not have access to required computer equipment, the program will loan a laptop to the student, and provide a subsidy to the family to off-set some internet costs. This is based on financial need.” I went on to ask Ms. Sanford what the differences were between The Magic Johnson School and other schools that charge for high school diplomas for kids who cannot complete a traditional educational path, as well as what role are parents expected or encouraged to play in their children's involvement in your program and what if anything does your program do to address the very needs of your potential students including mental health issues, poverty, parental lack of involvement, etc? Her response should enlighten and encourage you: “The Magic Johnson Bridgescape Center is a dropout prevention and recovery program designed to help high school aged students who are either at risk of quitting school or who have left and want to return to complete their high school education and earn a standard high school diploma. This is not a credit recovery program or a traditional alternative school for misbehaving students--it is a full-service high school program with a complete curriculum ranging from remedial courses through Advanced Placement for all four grades of high school. Provost Academy Georgia is a public high school, not a private school or company. Students can attend an AM or PM session,

12 APRIL 5 - 19, 2013

Monday – Thursday, and work online from home as well. The center is staffed with onsite education teams to assist students in their daily studies and includes teachers, counselors/advisors, and other professionals who work together to provide academic support and post-graduation assistance for students, including those with learning disabilities. Students take online classes in our computer lab but also receive onsite and online tutoring from qualified teachers. All teachers hold, at minimum, a bachelor's degree and the high school teaching credentials required by the state. Many teachers also have graduate degrees. Since our program is part of a public high school, all of our students have to meet the same graduation requirements that other public high school students have to meet. All of our students are required to take all the state-mandated tests required of all Georgia public high school students. Every family is assigned an advisor before students begin classes. The advisor's primary objective is to make sure each one of his/her students is making progress and meeting or exceeding his/her academic goals. During the enrollment process, the advisor has a conference with each family to create an individualized learning plan for the student. The student’s prior academic record, goals, and learning needs are considered when creating the plan, and the plan is adapted by the advisor as needed throughout the year based on the student's pace, performance and assessment results. Our goal is to make it easy for parents to take an active role by staying informed about the curriculum and their student's achievement. With our Parent Portal, each parent receives a log-in which gives them access to all of the relevant information about student progress from a single homepage. Parents are not required to provide direct instruction or tutoring like they might in some other online programs. Parents may also contact their child’s advisor and instructors if there is a concern or question about progress. For students without parents, or with disinterested/unable parents, the advisor plays a crucial role in keeping the student on track for graduation and providing a caring adult. Students can call, text, or email their advisors anytime.” Awesome stuff, huh? And all for free. Another group of educators are also looking at other alternatives to help our children here in Bibb as no less than six groups have shown interest in creating Charter Schools here. Foremost and primary are former Westside High School Principal Laura Perkins who along with former Westside Graduation Coach Esterine Stokes are creating the Academy for Classical Education or ACE. According to Perkins, “The Academy for Classical Education is slated to open in August of 2014 but a school site has not yet been determined for many reasons. The most important reason is that the founding members want to insure first, that Bibb County residents want and will support a charter school. Charter schools have become a wonderful option for parents in many of the larger cities in Georgia and other states. Macon has yet to open a charter school but that could all change with the opening of ACE. An online petition and survey can be found at www.academyforclassicaleducation.com and ALL community members interested are asked to complete both the petition and the survey as both are needed to prove to the district and the state that a charter school is warranted for the Macon/Bibb County area. Once the Founding Board has the assurance

The Travis Denning Band: Josh Graff - Guitar/Vocals, Jake Johnson - Bass/Vocals, Brad Sorrell - Drums

I first really became a huge fan of music when my dad came home with AC/DC Live. Ever since then, it was rock n' roll all day every day. When I started high school I finally got into the Allman Brothers, and their Live at the Fillmore East album made me want to chase music as a career.

LISTEN UP

THE TRAVIS DENNING BAND

A graduate of Warner Robins High, Travis Denning has been playing regularly around middle Georgia the last couple years, and has garnered a lot of local support. Listen up to...

Who are your influences? Allman Brothers, Alabama, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, George Strait, Levon Helm and The Band

What's your favorite moment on stage? One of my favorite times on stage with my current band was the first time we played Milledgeville. We played Buffington's downtown and it was just one of those nights when everything went perfect. We brought out a great crowd that night.

How would you describe your music? I like to describe us as a great live Country band that's not afraid to step out of the predictable boundaries. Josh brings a lot of blues to the table, Jake and Brad bring such a powerful groove, and our mutual love for bands like the Allman Brothers Band and The Band really take the songs I write to a different level.

What do you enjoy most about playing? I just love being able to do what I want to do with some great friends. And I absolutely LOVE to hear people sing along to my music.

What's next for Travis Denning Band? We're heading down to Dothan, AL for the Toadlick Music Festival in a few weeks to play along side acts Colt Ford, Luke Bryan, Jake Owen, and Chris Young. Then this summer we're going to start working on a new record. 2013 has had a great start so far for us, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year has to offer.

WHERE TO GO, WHAT TO DO.... SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH FESTIVAL, BEARSTOCK, SOAP BOX DERBY AND SECOND SUNDAY CONCERT SERIES AND SO MUCH MORE! I'm particularly excited about a number of events going on around Middle Georgia over the next few weeks. The weather has been incredible the past week and if it keeps up I might pull out the ol' Daisy Dukes and get my shine on.. Which, by the way, is an absolutely terrible song that's been playing on 99.1 by this group called Florida-Georgia Line. There's an equally as terrible video to go right along with it. Indulge yourself.. Sounds of the South Festival returns to Milledgevllle the weekend of the 5th & 6th for its second year and the 2013 lineup boasts huge growth from the humble inaugural event. Thirty-two bands will be playing around the Downtown over the course of the weekend with proceeds benefitting the Children's Miracle Network of Hospitals. It's not very often that you only have to pay $7.00 to see that many bands - especially when the lineup includes acts like Bloodkin, Issac Bramblett Band, Betsy Kingston & the Crowns, Dank Sinatra, and local favorites sunDollars, WoolFolk, and Free Lance Ruckus! You can check out a full schedule at soundsofthesouthfestival.com. Should you choose to linger around in Macon, it is First Friday and there's music, art, dining, and plenty of good company to be found around town. The companion exhibit for FiredWorks - "Off The Wall" - opens up at the Macon Arts Alliance at 5:00pm, while The 567 Center is hosting "The Joy of My Art",featuring the work of various members of the Fine Art Society. There's been this big basketball thing going on over the past month and it's finally coming to an end. I'd make a "break a leg" nod to Louisville, but that would be highly in appropriate we can be assured they don't need any luck in winning the big dance this year. That all being said, there are a number of free concerts in Atlanta that are well worth making the drive for - including Sting, My Morning Jacket, Grace Potter, and Muse - all part of the March Madness..madness. And then of course The Braves are off to a hot start and

SAVE THE DATE

2-4-1 wells 4-8PM! Fusion trio Trioscapes explores the ground between jazz and metal. things are looking up! Go sports! Moving on to the next week… The Big Game is taking place Monday night (8th) and while every bar in America will be blasting the game, The Cox Capitol Theatre is offering $10.00 all-you-canbe-late-to-work-Tuesday High Life/PBR, so start working on your excuses. The Grand Opera House will be presenting "The Rainbow Fish" (Come on, you have to remember this book..) on Tuesday the 9th. Showtimes are at 9:30am & 11:30am, and despite being a children's play, this sounds like a decent reason to tell your boss why you were late to work (see what I did there..). For all you ladies looking to have oneup on all your "stylish" friends, Karats and Keepsakes on Forsyth Rd will be having their Spring 2013 preview of the Henry & Belle denim line (I made a typo and spell check insisted upon correcting it to "demon line"). You can donate $20.00 to Central Georgia Autism, Ltd. fund and receive 20% off your order, so that's cool, I think. Not sure what else to say about this one, other than nice jeans benefiting a great cause - and the potential for some of you folks to meet your potential second half.. On Friday, April 12th, the Knight Fund for Macon at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, Hay House, a property of the Georgia Trust is proud to present Ian Gow, the Senior Curator for the National Trust for Scotland, who will be giving a lecture on A Scottish Duke's Treasure House: Brodick Castle and its Collections. Not what I would have named my castle, but that's just me… Renowned as the author of three books including most recently, Scotland’s Lost Houses, Mr Gow’s lecture will center on the architecture, social history, and decorative arts of Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, a seat of the Duke of Hamilton’s family whose lives there in the twentieth century constitute a story in the vein of Downtown Abbey. Take a break from knocking back Platinums and spend an evening educating yourself on the world outside of Bibb County.

“Amour” Screening @ Douglas Theatre – Macon, – April 14th Old You @ The Hummingbird – Macon, Georgia – April 17th Wanee Music Festival @ Spirit of Suwannee Music Park - Live Oak,

Rise and shine the next day though because Mercer University's annual FREE music festival - Bearstock - kicks off at noon on Saturday. Featuring headlining appearances from Switchfoot, Travis Porter, and The Ready Set, Tattnall Square Park will be jammed packed with crowds from around the area. The lineup also includes Macon ex-pats Stevens Layne (they're now in Nashville after signing a pretty sweet record deal), JuBee & the Morning After (they're all over Georgia, but Macon is always home), and eight other bands from around our fair state. With the money they're spending on the event, I sure would like to see a headlining lineup that caters to a slightly more refined audience, but you can't beat free and it's always been a great time. Soapbox Derby, Second Sunday featuring Yacht Rock Schooner, and the 2013 Bragg Jam lineup announcement are on schedule for Sunday the 14th at Washington Park. Weather permitting, this could be the best day of the year. A "glass completely full" kind of day. All of this is free - and they'll have food trucks. Macon Noise is bringing the insanely good three-piece combo, Trioscapes, to Nospace on MLK on Tuesday, April 16th. Look up Trioscapes on Youtube, watch the first video that pops up, and have your mind expanded. That's the bassist from Between the Buried and Me, and the drummer from Eyris, a band from Warner Robins. This is the good stuff. Ever heard of Buzzin’ Cousins? No? The supergroup featuring John Mellencamp, John Prine, Joe Ely, Dwight Yoakham, and James McMurtry? Well, James McMurtry will be making a stop in Macon on April 24th for a FREE show at The Hummingbird – the only free show of his entire upcoming tour. The son of Pulitzer Prize winning writer Larry McMurtry, James’ music has been an anchor in the alt-country and americana scene for more than two decades. You must know the song “Choctaw Bingo”, right? When you get to the bar, tell them in his words, “I don’t want another drink. I only want that last one again”.

SATURDAY,APRIL 13 Bearstock @ Tattnall Square Park

The former professional golfer and collaborator with Jermaine Dupri is used to adversity, taking country music by storm at a time when Nashville labels deemed him “not pretty enough” and country radio sees him as too distinct to add to their playlists. The fact is Colt Ford is hard to categorize is exactly why he’s been successful. His fans appreciate his diverse musical talents by the boatloads, as a visit to one of his shows will prove. Colt’s list of guest superstars on Declaration of Independence is an impressive one. Jason Aldean, for whom Colt co-wrote the smash “Dirt Road Anthem,” lends his vocal talents to “Drivin’ Around,” while Jake Owen adds his unique spin on “Back,” the album’s first single.

Mercer’s annual FREE outdoor concert features headliners American alternative pop < The Ready Set, hip hop act Travis Porter and the American alternative rock band Switchfoot. The music starts at noon with local favorites playing throughout the day; Stevens Layne, Jubee & the Morning After, The Electric Sons, Funk You, Wowser Bowser, Iron Jayne, Baby Baby, sunDOLLARS, The Rest of Us, DJB3. The concert takes place at Tattnall Square Park, bring blankets, chairs and a picnic and set up for the day. Also taking place will be a car show and an all day bike race.

SATURDAY 4/6

SOUTHERN CROSSROADS @ AP’S HIDDEN HIDEAWAY

The Southern Crossroads Band plays a mix of 60's oldies, classic and southern rock, and classic country music.

FRIDAY 4/12

CAROLINE AIKEN @ THE 567 CENTER FOR RENEWAL

Aiken is a prolific songwriter who has been making a career of music for 44 years. Her bluesy voice, masterful finger picking guitar style and hypnotic stage presence made her the artist of choice to open for such diverse music legends as Arlo Guthrie, Muddy Waters, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, Beach Boys, and many others. She also has influenced and mentored many young musicians during her career, including Shawn Mullins and the Indigo Girls. More recently, Aiken performed on NPR’s nationally-syndicated radio show MOUNTAIN STAGE. Doors open at 7:30, show starts at 8 pm. A cash bar will be provided by Downtown Grill. Tickets are $10.

COPPER INTO STEEL @ ROASTED

What do you get when you add twangy bluegrass to acoustic rock? What happens when you blend folk music with the blues? The answer is Copper Into Steel, a band that creatively blends classic influences with a fresh vision for what modern Southern music could be. Based out of Tennesse, welcome these guys to Macon.

FREELANCE RUCKUS @ MELLOW Veteran musician Bramblett raised enough funds thru his Kickstarter program to finish his newest album, Meantime. While Bramblett may not be a household name, he is legendary within music circles for his songwriting and musicianship. He released a pair of acclaimed solo albums in the mid-‘70s, then joined the jazz-rock outfit Sea Level, becoming their principal songwriter and vocalist. From there, Bramblett embarked on a path as a bigleague, musical utility man (primarily sax and keys) and landed on the speed dial of some of the greatest names in rock history, including Traffic, Steve Winwood, Levon Helm and Bonnie Raitt. “[He's] one of Georgia's musical treasures… Guaranteed to improve your day!” —Dave Schools (Widespread Panic)

FUNK YOU EP RELEASE @ THE HUMMINGBIRD

Funk You is a funk band out of Augusta, GA formed in early 2011. Funk You delivers an eclectic blend of funk, reggae, jazz, and hip hop focusing on a high energy progressive funk sound that will keep you moving all night long!

COUSIN DAN @ ROASTED

ALBATROSS @ ROASTED

Blues/jazz/funk/rock, what more do you want? Roasted consistently brings in new regional talent to their stage, go check them out.

FRIDAY 4/19

FREELANCE RUCKUS @ MELLOW MUSHROOM

The guys out of Haddock, GA have acquired quite a local following and have been playing gigs all over middle Georgia. Playing popular rock n roll and sounds from the seventies, these musicians are talented and know how to put on a show.

COUSIN DAN @ ROASTED

Nick, owner of Roasted says you’ve got to check this new wave, electronica out! Cousin Dan born and raised in Texas, but has been doing his thing for the past year or so in Atlanta. Basically his moustache makes the ladies weak at the knees, he rips bibles in half, and shoots lazers from his fingertips and bounces them off of his junk. All the while mounted upon his personal dance floor equipped with lights and fog blasting from the sides. Oh yea and the music is kind of an 80's throwback....2080's that is. Become a believer!

Continued from page 10 from the community, the search for a school site will officially begin.” “ACE will open with grades 6-8 and will add a grade each year until the configuration is a 6-12 program. Founders Laura Perkins and Esterine Stokes believe that teachers make the real difference in the success of any school and are truly the lifeblood of a well-performing school. Only the very best, academic practitioners will be invited to teach at ACE. A second vital factor in the integrity of a school is the role that parents will play. We know the importance of strong parenting in the life of a child, but that strong parental role is equally needed in schools. Parents and teachers must work hand in hand in order for students to grow and learn. Bibb County has a long and rich history of producing excellent students from schools filled with incredible teachers. In spite of the last few years, we believe that can still be the case and want to make that desire a reality at ACE.” Further Perkins states that, “A proposal has been made to the local Board of Education and the state Department of Education for a charter school that will use a curriculum called a classical education curriculum delivered in a blended learning model. Classical education is a curriculum best defined as a pattern of learning that is developmentally appropriate. It is extremely language-focused and students working with this curriculum become adept at using words in their written and spoken work rather than pictures, videos, etc.” If you would like to find out more about ACE, there will be two public forums upcoming very soon. them at Northway Church on Zebulon Rd. across from the Chic Fil A on April 9th from 7-9PM. The 2nd will be at Harvest Cathedral on Rocky Creek Rd. on April 23rd from 7-9PM. Ok, so far we’ve addressed the futures of Middle School kids, High School kids and kids who can’t make it in mainstream education…What about the little ones, like my son Teddy who is about to enter the 1st Grade? Well, another group called Charter Group Educational Foundation out of the Atlanta area, will be trying to start a Charter School for K-8 as well! This group, headed by Chairperson Lyn Michaels-Carden as well as Treasurer and CFO Danny Dukes, already operates two other Georgia schools in Coweta and Cherokee Counties that are very successful. (On a personal note, I’ve known Danny for many years and trust him very much.) According to their website, CGEF “was founded by a diverse group of Georgia based individuals concerned with the option of quality school choice for families and students in Georgia. The purpose is to provide a premier academic school options for students and families in Georgia. The Board is responsible for the legal and financial obligations, establishes policy consistent with the School's mission and vision, and ensures that the programs and operations of the School are faithful to the terms of the charter.” As for the schools, they are part of the Charter Schools USA family and “will foster students in a culturally diverse environment providing them with healthy learning and growth in order to prepare students to be lifelong learners who contribute to society.”

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland JASON HOWARD wrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later conArrested 4/13/2009 4 Cts Felony Murder firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame. For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
