It would seem that it is early in my tenure at All Saints’ to offer much of a reflection, a look back, at All Saints’ Day School. I’ve been here for just a short time and haven’t had an opportunity to do much more than bask in the gracious and warm welcome that has been extended to me by all in this lovely educational community.

From a more distanced perspective, though, I am in a position to offer, at the very least, a view of All Saints’ informed by more than two decades of relationship with the School and all that makes it a distinctive, well-recognized, and happy place for children to be led and taught by adults who are deeply committed to them.

Years and years and years ago, I chaired a California Association of Independent Schools accreditation visit to All Saints’ Day School. It was during that visit that I began my understanding of what an Episcopal school could really be. There was a palpable sense of joy and community that was everywhere evident in the school. A balanced focus on the spiritual and the physical aspects of a child’s life enhanced the vigorous

Underlying it all was a sense of connection. Children connected to one another and to the adults in the community.

Adults connected to one another, parents, faculty and staff, cooperatively engaged in the raising up of children.

And generations connected to one another, too, as aunts and uncles, grandmothers and grandfathers appeared as ancillary support to the process. Finally, All Saints’ Day school did not understand itself to be an island unto itself. It was connected though service to the broader community.

There are more buildings now.

Perhaps the structure of the academic program has been modified over time. Certainly there have been changes in personnel (though I take great comfort in the continued presence of an old timer or two). And, of course, there is much greater emphasis on information technology.

But the essence of connection and cooperation and the sense of a joy-filled community committed to the wellbeing and broad education of children remain. It is a wonderful, a wonder-filled place, to be. We are all of us blessed to be a part of such a community.

What a privilege and honor it has been to have served as Head of our fine school for the past twelve years. As this newest edition of Reflections celebrates so beautifully, we all have so many reasons to be proud of our remarkable school community and our outstanding teachers, staff, students, parents, friends, and supporters.

My years at All Saints’ have been very special ones indeed, and I leave carrying warm and wonderful memories of our time together. And it has been together - as a full community - that we have accomplished great things for our school and the students we serve.

Our teaching staff is excellent - second to none - and defined by caring educators who are always willing to go the extra mile for their students. The All Saints’ parent body is renowned for its heartfelt volunteer spirit and generosity, and our school is blessed to call as its own so many caring and loyal friends, donors, and supporters. Our students, I am proud to say, are not only sought after for their academic accomplishments and preparedness, but for their strength of character and the well-rounded young men and women that they are. Countless times over the years I’ve heard from high schools that you can always tell an All Saints’ student, and that our students are consistently academically wellprepared, inquisitive learners who are giving and positive school community contributors.

An inspired “forward-thinker,” Michele’s vision, with support from the Board of Trustees and the All Saints’ community, has resulted in the following major accomplishments: - Establishment of All Saints’ Core Values - Curriculum Mapping Program - Organic Garden Program - Campus and facility upgrades - Playground/fitness course - Development of Long Range Strategic, Site, and Financial Plans - Competitive Faculty Compensation Plan - Remodeling of Coats Hall - Early Childhood Unit facilities - Completely remodeled Tech Center - Organic Garden expansion Prior to coming to All Saints’, Michele spent 15 years as a history teacher and Dean of Students at Sacred Heart School in Atherton. While an administrator, she taught senior honors history courses in Russian History, American Foreign Policy, and Comparative Political Systems.

She received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree in English and teaching credential from the College of Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, CA. She has been listed in “Who’s Who in American Education” and other publications, and received the UCSan Diego Distinguished Teaching Award in 1997. She is and has been a member of school accreditation teams across the country.

An avid reader, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her family and in the company of her golden retriever and school mascot, Frances.

Michele has been married to her husband, Bob, for over 30 years and is the mother of two grown sons - Matthew, an attorney in New York, and Christopher, a State’s attorney in Sacramento and a proud grandmother to grandson Noah.

In the spring of 2003, a couple of weeks before graduation, after Mrs. Rench was hired, and before she was to take over as Head the next fall, I took her on a tour of the school. We went into the gym, where the 8th graders were setting up for an event, and I asked them, “Do you know who this is?” One of the boys, whose name shall go unmentioned, replied, “Your mother?” I knew then that Mrs. Rench was someone to be reckoned with, because, without missing a beat, she replied, “It’s a good thing you’re an 8th grader!”

In a way, it’s too bad he was an 8th grader; think of all the things he missed because he graduated that year. This is just a short list of the ways Mrs. Rench improved our school: First of all, just look around at our physical plant. Under her direction we vastly expanded our organic garden and made it an integral part of our curriculum. We put up a brand new set of playground equipment. Our tech lab was upgraded with new computers and received a complete facelift. We have our beautiful ECU, and our new performing arts space, a huge improvement over our old space. Student life also saw great advances under Mrs. Rench, including the development of the student planner, the six-day rotating class schedule, the beginnings of our participation in History Day and the County Spelling Bee, character education, an expanded summer program, the introduction of volleyball as an after-school team sport, and increased participation in Orchestra in the Schools.

Our use of technology expanded during Mrs. Rench’s tenure, including the new tech lab, laptops for all students’ use, establishment of the school website, online teacher and class pages, curriculum mapping to facilitate teacher collaboration, and the expanded use of email among teachers, parents, and students. Mrs. Rench also oversaw the drafting of a new Strategic Plan for the school, based on our mission statement and ten core values.

One of Mrs. Rench’s first initiatives was to address the issue of teacher compensation. Under her leadership our salary schedule was reorganized, and salaries were increased to make them competitive with public school salaries. She also instituted a substantial professional growth program, and she introduced my favorite, teacher appreciation week.

It is not uncommon for recently-graduated students who are visiting to look around the campus and to see the programs we offer, and to say, “Whoa, we never had this when I was here.” Thank you to Michele Rench for all that she did for All Saints’ throughout her 12 years here.

TRIBUTES TO ANNE CRISAN AND CELESTE WILLIAMS

Throughout the past thirty years CELESTE WILLIAMS has dedicated her life to All Saints’ Day School as not only a teacher, but also as a mentor and friend to students and fellow faculty alike.

Throughout those years Anne was a calm but enthusiastic presence, organizing Visiting Days and Open Houses and giving countless tours of the school to introduce All Saints’ to the community. She also quietly carried out the complex job of maintaining all of our student records, and she was a key player in helping to organize a number of school activities, including our annual trips to SEA Lab, the Marin Headlands, and Yosemite.

To appreciate the very important role that Anne played in the life of the school for the last quarter century, consider this: Despite the fact that most of her work was behind the scenes, when she was introduced at the retirement chapel last May, all of the students, faculty, staff, and parents spontaneously rose and gave her a standing ovation. - Bud Smith

Although Steven graduated in 1998, and his younger brother Charlie graduated in 2000, we were able to keep Anne, who filled her post with energy and grace until her retirement last spring.

All Saints’ fosters growth by providing students the opportunity to engage with one another in research and innovative programs, through our speaker series, in discussion groups, on field trips, and during events in which students share ideas, explore possibilities, and take initiative. Our ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM broadens our students’ educational experiences.

Students were the investigators in the lab, feeding the animals to determine if they were herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores. Later they toured the Point Sur Lighthouse. The views from the lighthouse were gorgeous, and they had a lot of fun at the All Saints’ campground afterwards. Students also completed their ‘Walk Through California,’ an interactive experience featuring friendly competition and lively retelling of common core history curriculum, demonstrating that they are experts on all things California.

5TH GRADE spent a ‘Day at Google,’ an auction item generously donated by the Morgan family. They enjoyed

knowledge and reenacting battle scenes and important events. They continued their study of botany at the Preserve, learning firsthand about redwoods and their importance to the environment.

6TH GRADE participated in a workshop on sustainability, organized

by SOS (Schools of Sustainability). The students also experienced the NASA Ames Exploration Encounter, a unique educational program designed to inspire positive attitudes about science,

technology, engineering, and math. Located in a renovated supersonic wind tunnel building, the Ames Exploration Encounter provided the opportunity to experience science in action. They also toured

For this school year’s Shakespeare production, the All Saints’ Middle Schoolers performed The Tempest, a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation.

It was produced at All Saints’ in 1998 and 2005. Director Laura Hewitt worked with over 50 student actors, dancers, musicians, and stage crew to produce a captivating play.

PRIMARY PLAYERS tales that were brought to life on the Coats Hall stage with student actors, singers, dancers, and stage crew. The first graders shared the story of The Little Red Hens. Imagine our two Red Hens finding out that all their friends were too busy to help them plant, water, weed, and harvest their corn. Now, imagine their friends’ surprise at not being offered a corn muffin: there’s a lesson there!

The second graders told the tale of The Little Red Riding Hoods. After being warned by their parents, friends, and owls that there were hungry wolves in the forest, the Little Red Riding Hoods strayed from their path and came face to face with two hungry wolves. Ask the second graders what happened next!

THE WIZARD OF OZ

THE WIZARD OF OZ Spring had us skipping down the yellow brick road with the musical The Wizard of Oz. Bud Smith directed over 80 students as they acted, danced, and worked backstage to bring this timeless classic to life. Dorothy, Glinda and her sorceresses, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Munchkins, Jitterbugs, and Little and Wicked Witches had the audiences mesmerized. L. Frank Baum’s heartwarming tale holds a very special place in All Saints’ history. 2015 brought the 6th installment of the musical, which was performed in 1981, 1988, 1993, 2002, and 2009. It was a smashing success, with four sold-out shows!

INTERNATIONAL WEEK In January the All Saints’ community celebrated International Week, honoring global diversity and learning about different cultures.

Chapel presentations included salsa dance lessons, folktales from foreign lands, beautiful international songs, and more.

Parents and grandparents made the week unforgettable as they presented events based on their heritage and first-hand experiences from

around the world. Everyone enjoyed authentic culinary delights, music and dance, slide shows, artifacts, and more from the home countries of many All Saints’ families.

In ECU, Layla’s mom, Andrea Ibessaine ’88, treated everyone to a traditional Algerian tea service, offering mint tea and delicious dates. Students learned about Chile and how to dance the Cueca with John and Katherina Burton.

Our 3rd graders got an inside look at Italy and the Sicilian fishing industry in Monterey. They learned to prepare and stuff cannoli.

Students ended each day of the week feeling as though they had been on trips to faraway lands. There were French presentations, Russian treats, expositions on Tahiti complete

with coconuts, and Italian pizza and gelato for everyone. We had invaluable help from All Saints’ families.

The Middle School sponsored a panel on the topic of cultural similarities and differences experienced by émigrés as they came to the United States from their home countries. Nine All Saints’ parents and teachers participated, representing Ecuador, England,

Japan, Trinidad, Uganda, Tunisia, Czech Republic, Germany, and Colombia. Middle school students developed the questions posed to the panel. Their answers demonstrated extraordinary contrasts in culture and opened eyes, minds, and hearts to the entire world and its people.

The week concluded with the rededication of our Peace Pole and a potluck of international foods from each grade.

ALUMNI NEWS wife, Renate. He is Dean of the 12th Grade at University Prep, an independent high school in Seattle, and a History and Economics Teacher. He is in his 31st year of teaching there. He has fond memories of his time at All Saints’, where he developed a strong appreciation of history and German from Jim Kohnke, who taught him in 4th, 7th, and 8th grades. In 1997 he was chosen by the Washington State Council for Social Studies as the Teacher of the Year. This year he was chosen as the World Educator by the World Affairs Council.

LOUISE BOONE BOWEN-WEST ’79 is

the mother of Lygon (20) and Elizabeth (18). Lygon is studying engineering at Imperial College and Elizabeth is just graduating from secondary school and will be attending university in the fall. Louise, a non-practicing solicitor, teaches Latin at a school very much like All Saints’. She lives in a village not far from Cambridge, England.

LAWRENCE BOONE ’83 and his wife Virginie both work in the wine business in the Sonoma area. Lawrence is a wine broker and Virginie is editor of the California section of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

She is also a freelance writer for the wine industry. Their son Miles William Boone (10) is loads of fun!

TANNA FRANKE DRAPKIN ’84 lives on the Sonoma County Coast and works for Stanford University in the Persuasive Technology Lab. She and her husband Stephen have an eight-year-old daughter Sulwen who loves to find ways to be creative and expressive. This summer she asked her Aunt Hailey to help recreate a pioneer’s life for several days, doing activities that the American pioneers did, including wearing the traditional garb of the day!

MARY SCHLEY ’86 has been a reporter

for the Carmel Pine Cone since 1998. She was nominated by Paul Miller (former All Saints’ parent and owner of the paper) for a Pulitzer Prize in local reporting. Mary especially “loves her job because she is always learning and asking questions.”

She credits her All Saints’ education for cultivating and encouraging personal expression. “My job has taught me to live life the best that you can. It’s free. Be in the moment!”

Carson Barrett on August 15, 2014. He weighed 9lb 10oz and was 20 inches long.

He is an incredibly happy baby, and the Barrett family feels so blessed! Madeline (4) and Catherine (2) are excellent and very loving big sisters! They recently received orders that they will be moving from Pensacola, Florida to San Diego for the next two years. Now that we know they’ll be in California, we are looking forward to seeing them on campus soon.

SOPHIA ALBOV ’98 returned in July from

her Fulbright grant period in Finland to University of Montana to complete her masters’ coursework. This spring she was honored to receive the American Geographical Society’s Council Fellowship to support additional fieldwork in Finland this summer. She also connected with fellow alum Jessica Simms ’95 at the Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois, the nation’s largest geography conference, where they were presenting their respective work.

the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Boston University on May 16, 2015. She was also given the Thomas T. Gilbert, M.D. Award for Excellence in Family Medicine, and was admitted to membership in the Gold Humanism Honor Society. She began her residency in Family Practice at Brown University in Providence, RI in June. Just one week after graduating from medical school, Jenny and Brad Miller were married in Essex, Massachusetts.

She leaves at the end of August for a semester in Paris, France, where she will be studying education, management, and psychology at Paris Diderot 7 University. She will graduate with an MA in International Education Management and an MPA in December, 2016.

She received the Shirley Schoof Club Sport Athlete of the Year Award at the annual Stanford Athletics Board Award Ceremony, honoring her for four consecutive regional High Point Year End Rider Honors (Cacchione Cup), a record-shattering 16 IHSA National Finals events (top 10 finishes in 13 events), four-time Academic All American, and for service to the team as a Captain/President for three years. This summer Claire spent time with friends exploring Croatia, France, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Budapest, and Prague, and hiking in the Sierras with family.

year at the University of Oregon. He received a fouryear scholarship with the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) program and traveled to Fort Knox, Kentucky for a month of training this summer. When he graduates from University of Oregon, he will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He hopes to serve in the Infantry branch.

CLAYTON ARCHER ‘09 formally committed

to stay at the U.S. Air Force Academy for the remainder of his college career and to serve in the U.S. Air Force for a minimum of five years after graduation. He just started his junior year.

He is majoring in Economics.

Scholar Athlete and Big West Honor Roll-Highest Honors Recognition as a 1st year collegiate athlete at UC Irvine competing on the Women’s Water Polo team. She also received Dean’s Honor Roll all three quarters. She was in Orange County all summer training with her teammates to prepare for next year’s season as a strong cohesive group and is competing on the SoCal Women’s open division team. She has had a fun, exhausting, and busy year as a Business Administration major and traveling with UCI water polo. She loves UCI and is enjoying the school and area.

After a rousing speech to the crowd, he was elected State Controller at Boys State - one of only 9 state officials elected by a group of 1,000 delegates.

ALUMNI NEWS JACK MARGOLIS ‘12 was named an

ELISE CRICCHIO ’13 completed a

Outstanding USA Water Polo Academic All American.

In addition to competing in the Junior Olympic Qualifiers for our region, Jack also competed on the Legacy Water Polo team in the 16U Junior Olympic National Finals at Stanford last summer. He had a great season as co-captain of Stevenson’s varsity lacrosse team, playing with fellow All Saints’ alum teammates. This summer Jack spent his time at the Engineering and Technology Leadership Camp at UC Berkeley and the LSL High Altitude Lacrosse Camp at Incline Village. He is looking forward to co-captaining this fall’s varsity water polo team, and playing with fellow All Saints’ alum teammates.

EMMA MORGAN ‘12 spent a week at MIT

CAROLINE HENDRICKS ‘13 served as Team

presenting her paper ‘Artificial Musculature: A new Approach to the Linear Solenoid’ as one of six finalists.

She was one of the three winners of the nationwide MIT THINK competition and now has the opportunity to develop her idea in a laboratory with MIT faculty and students.

ALEX MICHEL , who attended from 2007

to 2012, was selected as a finalist in the Kennedy Lugar youth exchange scholarship program. He will spend his junior year living in Bosnia-Herzegovina attending a local International baccalaureate high school living with a Muslim family. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Cultural Affairs Department. He will be a youth ambassador from Carmel.

MADELEINE FONTENAY ‘13 competed at

the 34th annual Constitutional Rights Foundation Mock Trial Competition in Riverside.

Carmel High’s team finished in 6th place. It was the first time that a mock trial team from Monterey County had placed this high at the state level.

DYLAN HOUPT ‘14 had a successful

freshman spring baseball season at Carmel High. Towards season’s end Dylan, a left-handed pitcher, was pulled up to JV to pitch the final few JV games of the season.

He was then called up to play on the CHS varsity baseball team for the playoffs.
