Excavator Have you ever tried to dig your fingers into soil to copy the action of a Backhoe? You will find that it takes some considerable effort in doing so. A backhoe performs this task efficiently and quickly. It is a powerful machine capable of doing work equivalent to as many as 500 horses. Excavators are designed to dig out soil or lift heavy objects. Excavators are mainly actuated using hydraulic power. This is because hydraulic system can transmit force from one point to another effectively and flexibly. A hydraulic system is used where a large amount of force is required for doing work and where precision and control is more important than speed.

How to operate: There are three electrical switches and three hydraulic circuits that control the excavator. Two of the switches control the track of the excavator and make the machine mobile. The third switch rotates the excavator’s arm about the body.

Lesson to be learnt: Hydraulic System A hydraulic system is used where a large amount of force is required for doing some work. In such a case, speed is generally not an important factor as hydraulic systems are usually slow. Hydraulics uses the principle of transferring a push or a pull through a medium which cannot be compressed (incompressible). In actual hydraulic systems, oils are used as the incompressible medium. We will create our own hydraulic systems using syringes as piston-cyclinder assembly, and water as the incompressible fluid inside them. The hydraulic system can be easily demonstrated by the following activity. 타 Take two 10ml syringes. Fill one syringe with water and connect it to the other syringe with the help of plastic tube. 타 Now place the syringes in each of your hands such that your right thumb is on one syringe and your left thumb is on the other. 타 When you Press the plunger/piston of one of the syringes you will find that the plunger/piston of the other syringe goes up.
