DURABLE

More Strength Means Less Substructure. Building decks with Humboldt Redwood requires less substructure because its strength allows for 24” spans from joist to joist. Other materials require tighter spacing, 16” spans and in some cases 12” spans – that’s almost like building a deck under your deck. More substructure means more materials, labor, and costs. No wonder contractors and do-it-yourselfers love building with redwood.

Built With Redwood Means Built To Last. Decks, fences and outdoor structures not only enhance the value of your home, they enhance the quality of your life. So when choosing building materials for your outdoor living projects, you want to make sure that the value and quality are going to last.

Legendary Strength That Passes The Test Of Time.

“Beautiful decks and satisfied homeowners. That’s two big reasons why I love working with redwood.”

Humboldt RedwoodTM is one of nature’s finest and strongest building materials with shear strength up to five times greater than other decking materials. That’s important for a number of reasons — first and foremost is structural stability. Whether you’re building a deck, fence, play set or outdoor living structure, the enduring strength of redwood means added safety and security.

Stands Up To The Elements.

STABLE

Nature can be harsh — sun, wind, rain, and insects can wreak havoc on some outdoor structures. But redwood stands up to the elements. It is naturally resistant to insects and decay. It resists warping, splitting and stays comfortable to bare feet even on the hottest, sunniest days.

Here’s To Long Life And Easy Maintenance. With simple care and maintenance, your Humboldt Redwood deck, fence and outdoor living structures will provide decades of excellent performance, and long-lasting value.

Legendary Fire Resistance. In 1906, an earthquake struck San Francisco causing tremendous damage and numerous fires throughout the city. In assessing the damage, P.H. Shaughnessy, Chief Engineer of the San Francisco Fire Department wrote:

“ …if the exterior finish of these buildings had not been of redwood lumber, I am satisfied that the area of the burned district would have been greatly extended.”

“We wanted something that would bring a warm, earthy balance to the outdoor living space. Humboldt Redwood is the ideal complement. I’ll be using it again.” Rosemary Wardell, Developer

PEACEFUL

Naturally Beautiful In Ways That Can’t Be Duplicated. There’s something about Humboldt Redwood. The warm, rich color and timeless beauty create a breathtaking first impression. Some call it the “wow factor.” But the beauty of redwood goes far beyond first impressions. It blends into the landscape creating a peaceful and relaxing natural outdoor living environment. And over time, it ages gracefully with lasting character that other building materials simply cannot duplicate. But enough words. See for yourself why redwood is world renowned for its natural beauty.

TIMELESS

The Secret Ingredient… Tannins.

What makes redwood heartwood so special? Natural tannins. The same substance that gives red wine its character, gives heartwood its distinctive warm, red color. Beyond the beauty, tannins also give the wood natural resistance to insects, decay and fire.

Legendary Redwood Beauty On Big Sur.

“FSC® Redwood Decking and Fencing allows this Green Business to install top quality redwood projects and respect the forest.”

Scott and Deanne Clough. www.CloughConstruction.com

The drive along Highway 1 in California is a spectacular series of coastal cliffs and panoramic ocean views. Nowhere is this more true than along the stretch known as Big Sur. There, perched on a cliff high above the ocean shore, is the famous Nepenthe Restaurant built in 1947 by Bill and Lolly Fassett. Working with Rowan Maiden, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, and legendary Big Sur builders, Frank and Walter Trotter, they built the structure using native materials; redwood, hewn from the canyons and adobe bricks, which Lolly made with her own hands.

GROWTH Red Is The New Green. When it comes to environmentally friendly building materials, redwood is as green as it gets. Humboldt Redwood is a renewable resource and comes from forests that have been certified as well-managed by the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM (FSC®).

Every Day We Grow More Than We Harvest.

A Positive Impact From The Forest To Your Home.

In 1998, we made a commitment to be stewards of vast redwood forests in Northern California. Through our ongoing process of responsible and selective harvesting, we have harvested less than 50% of the growth of our forest since we took over. We display our Forest Stewardship Council icon as an emblem of excellence in sustainable forest management.

According to recent life cycle assessments, redwood has a positive impact on the environment throughout its life. That’s because instead of emitting carbon, it stores it. From forest to mill to your home, Humboldt Redwood is one of the most energy-efficient building materials. And when it’s done providing strength and natural beauty to your property, it goes back to the earth to nurture future growth.

BALANCE

Forests Are More Than Trees. A forest is a shared ecosystem of plant life and animal habitats. It’s a symbiotic relationship, a delicate balance that we strive to maintain through a comprehensive Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) that encompasses:

Protection Of Species With dedicated conservation areas throughout our forests, we provide natural habitat and protection for a number of birds, animals and fish including: spotted owls, marbled murrelets, the bald eagle, peregrine falcon, western snowy plover, bank swallow, red tree vole, amphibians and reptiles, and rare plants.

Watershed Analysis Working collaboratively with the California Department of Fish and Game, NOAA Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, California Geologic Survey, local consultants and community groups, we study impacts and address watershed conditions affecting aquatic habitat through multi-disciplinary scientific analyses.

Roads Management Roads can be a significant source of sediment that is delivered to watercourses, but this impact can be substantially reduced through proper management and upgrades. We minimize the impacts of forest roads through an ambitious plan of road improvements. This includes ongoing road inventory and assessment, road upgrading and storm proofing, and cooperative restoration projects with state and federal agencies to improve water quality.

It’s Like Gardening, Only On A Grander Scale.

“We’re forest stewards first and foremost. That’s like being a gardener only on a much grander scale. Our goals are to sustainably manage the land, selectively harvest, promote growth, provide jobs, and preserve habitat and water quality.” Maralyn Renner, Stewardship Manager Humboldt Redwood Co., LLC

Not only is Humboldt Redwood strong, beautiful and environmentally friendly — it provides an incredible array of finishing options, including doing nothing at all. Left on its own, redwood gradually turns a silvery gray; a natural, rustic look perfect for those seeking a timeless elegance for their property.

LASTING

Versatility From Start To Finish.

Surfaces should be clean and dry. Moisture is the most common cause of finish failures, so use proper vapor barriers, air vents and flashing in new construction. Apply finishes on windless days. Ideal temperature range is between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, which is why early morning is a great time to finish your deck. Use finishes recommended for wood exteriors. Follow manufacturers’ directions and read warnings on toxicity. To avoid nail stains, use stainless steel, aluminum or top quality hot-dipped galvanized nails. Back-priming is recommended for all exterior finishes, particularly paints. Do not use wire brushes or steel wool as metal particles may become embedded in the wood and can cause stains. Use stiff bristle brushes. Don’t mix incompatible materials or apply them over one another. Finish failures may result. Periodic rinsing with a garden hose will remove dirt and leaves. Stubborn build-up can be removed by scrubbing with a bristle brush with a solution of warm water and a mild detergent. Rinse afterward. To rejuvenate and restore redwood color, apply oxalic acid according to directions.

VERSATILE

For All Of Your

Outdoor Living Needs.

The Scotia Series From Humboldt Redwood TM

For generations of deck-building contractors and do-it-yourselfers, the go-to grades of redwood Deck Common and Deck Heart came from Scotia, California and were known for their consistency in quality, board-sizing and grading. Those same standards are the inspiration and benchmark for the Humboldt Redwood Scotia Series.

CHARACTER

The Right Grade Makes All The Difference.

Other Grades

According to the California Redwood Association (CRA), there are over 30 different grades of redwood; but fear not, the process for picking the right one for your deck is really quite simple.

The garden grades of redwood include Construction Heart, Construction Common, Merchantable Heart, and Merchantable Common. These grades are frequently specified for fences and other outdoor structures where knots and grain add a unique character to the finished surface.

The Scotia SeriesTM From Humboldt Redwood

Deck Heart

Deck Common

Humboldt Redwood’s Scotia Series Deck Common and Deck Heart are graded specifically to be strong and stable, look great, and last for years and years. These are structural grades that meet stringent requirements for slope of grain and knot content.

Redwood Grades...The Basics. Redwood grades fall into two major categories – heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood comes from the center of the tree and has the warm red color that gives redwood its name. Sapwood comes from the outer areas of the tree and has some red heartwood but is primarily cream-colored wood. The next major factor in grading is the number and size of knots in the wood — the fewer the knots, the higher the grade.

Sapwood

The architectural grades of redwood include Clear All Heart, Heart B, Clear, and B Grade. These grades are normally for exterior and interior architectural uses. They are the choice grades for siding, paneling, trim and cabinetry.

So Which Grade Is The Right One For Your Project? All redwood is structurally sound and provides lasting character, but there are some important things to remember. For uses where the wood will be on or near soil, such as posts, bulkheads, patio grids or garden boxes, it’s essential to use one of the durable, heartwood grades – Clear All Heart, Heart B, Deck Heart, or Construction Heart. For construction above ground where there is little danger of insect or decay issues, one of the sapwood grades – Clear, B Grade, Deck Common, Construction Common – will serve very well.
