Welcome to the Revolution! Last year, we celebrated “Film is Art” - and this year, it’s time to bring that art to the masses! The great digital tools that filmmakers of all ages have available to them give everyone an opportunity to tell their story. From the top-of-the-line cameras to someone’s iPhone, the technology is literally in everyone’s hands to make a film. Now is the time to embrace the movement. Here at the Phoenix Film Festival, you can watch films made by artists that scrape together resources to bring their visions to life. You don’t need millions of dollars to make a good movie. All you need is story, characters that you embrace, and the willingness to embrace the independent. That’s why our programs like the Phoenix Film Festival, the Phoenix Film Society, IFP - Phoenix, and the Arizona Student Film Festival are important. Why our volunteers, staff, partners and sponsors are so enthusiastic and supportive. We believe in the Revolution. Hey Everybody! Welcome to the 2014 Phoenix Film Festival! Thank you for joining the Film Revolution. The film revolution is about discovering new and creative films, learning about how they’re made and then spreading the word about the great films that you’ve found. In order to help you, we have spent the last year putting together our best film festival yet. We’re extremely proud of the film selections we have programmed this year. It’s the most difficult and most rewarding thing we do. I would like to thank the filmmakers who have trusted us to exhibit the films that they have poured their hearts and souls into. Each year I’m amazed at their talents and their story-telling ability. Be sure to congratulate them on their success of creating these great films that we get to enjoy. FESTIVAL 101
Welcome film lovers! You have arrived at one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “Coolest Film Festivals” So, what exactly do you do at a “film festival”? Well, to start you can be sure to check out the new films showing here – all of the movies at the PFF are Valley-wide premieres, with the occasional retrospective or classic film thrown in for good measure. Basically, you relax, eat some popcorn, and enjoy the movies! I want to see movies. What do I do? We have a couple different options for you! You can look through this magnificently handy program right in front of you, or browse the PFF website. (phoenixfilmfestival.com) All of the films screening at the festival are covered in the program and on our website. There’s an abundance of films including narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films, and more – all there for you to watch over the duration of the festival. Where do I get tickets to see the movies? Excellent question! You can buy passes online or at the Festival Ticket Center located a few doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatres – there’s a big sign; you can’t miss it. Tickets and passes bought online can be picked up at the Festival Ticket Center. After you get your passes, be sure to pick your films and get tickets for them – get there early so your choices aren’t sold out! If you have a ticket for a screening, you are guaranteed a seat. If you don’t want a pass, you can still buy single tickets both online and at the Ticket Center. But the best value is to buy a pass – with so many great films playing at the festival, you can save some money and catch more films! So I heard there’s other stuff going on? What’s that all about? Well, if you get tired of watching movies all day (and let’s face it, you’ll need to take a break at some point!), we’re giving you the opportunity to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! It’s our treat. Don’t forget to check out the Arizona Republic Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. Just follow the signs and you’ll find out just how awesome a PFF party is. Within the Party Pavilion you will find DJs, the bars and the parties, as well as the free seminars, our great partner booths where they love giving stuff away, and our silent auction where you can buy movie-related memorabilia and help out this amazing non-profit! And yes, this will be the best weekend of your life.

Do I have to wait in a line to see a movie? Yes, you do have to wait in line for the films. There are so many movies playing and so many audience members attending that there is no way around it. However, the audience lines will give you a chance to chit-chat with your fellow film lovers, and keep us organized to make sure you see the film in a timely manner. That’ll let you have fun! There are 3 different lines, based on which pass or ticket you hold. Line 1 is VIP/Filmmaker/Press – if you have one of those passes, then you can sit first! Line 2 is for Festival passholders. Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/ Single Ticket holders. If you want to be seated with one of the earlier lines, you can upgrade onsite at the Festival Ticket Center anytime during the Festival! What makes this “film festival” different than just going to the movies? It’s best to answer that question with another question: when you go to the movies are you able to interact with actual filmmakers? Here, the filmmakers talk before the films, they talk after the films, they talk during the seminars and workshops, and they talk during the parties. Luckily, they won’t talk during the movies. Don’t be afraid of them, they don’t bite! They’ll even talk to you if you introduce yourself. Okay, I’m sold. Anything else I should know? Please make sure that if you ever have any questions, ask our friendly Volunteer Staff! They are always smiling and wearing shirts that say Festival Crew! They are more than happy to help you out with any question you have about the festival. We have over one hundred volunteers who work on the festival. And just like you, they love movies too! PHOENIX FILM FOUNDATION VISIONARY AWARD The Phoenix Film Foundation Visionary Award is given annually to an outstanding individual or company for their support of film and the community. This year we will be presenting the award once again as part of our Opening Night Event. Join us on Thursday, April 3th to see this year’s recipient.
Steve Rizley Steve Rizley is senior vice president and general manager of Cox Communications Southwest Region which includes Arizona and Nevada operations. Rizley previously served as senior vice president and general manager of Cox Arizona. Rizley serves in several civic, church and educational leadership capacities. He is board chairman of Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross and serves on boards of Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Banner Health Foundation, and on the executive committee of the national advisory council for the Marriott Business School of Brigham Young University. He is also a past-chair of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce. Rizley is the 2005 recipient of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association’s (NCTA) Vanguard Award. In his 34-year cable career he has served nationally on affiliate advisory boards and committees for the A.C. Nielsen Company and MTV Networks. In 1997, he was awarded the Cable Television Advertising Bureau’s President’s Award for industry leadership, and in 2002 was inducted into the Arizona Cable Television Hall of Fame. Prior to joining Cox Communications in 1995 as general manager of Cox Media Arizona, Rizley worked for Times Mirror Company as regional director for Dimension Media Services and also held management positions with American Cable. Rizley worked for The New York Times before entering the cable field. A graduate of BYU, Rizley has a Bachelor’s Degree in communications and holds an MBA in International Management from The Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is married to Marilyn Berg Rizley. They have four children and eight grandchildren.

The Phoenix Film Critics Society boasts over 25 members and more information about them can be found at PhoenixFilmCriticsSociety.org. Amica Insurance Kids’ Day at the Phoenix Film Festival Saturday, April 5, 2014 – 9 am to 2 pm Party Pavilion at Harkins Scottsdale 101 Kids’ Day returns for a fifth year and is an exciting opportunity for children ages 5 to 12 to experience this year’s festival. There will be a series of hands-on activity stations focusing on different aspects of film production. From coloring film posters for the youngest to acting and creating their own short films for the oldest, kids will love this action-packed morning. Everyone will get a kick out of the music station where they develop musical sounds and the screenwriting station, where they write a script “Mad Lib” style. Bring a 2g flash drive and take your creations home with you! All stations are age-appropriate and run the full gamut of the filmmaking process. IFP-PHOENIX FILM CHALLENGE SCREENING AND AWA Run Time: 90 minutes Screening Time: Monday, April 7 at 7:10 pm Over the last year local filmmakers have competed in three film challenges and this is the culmination of those efforts. In the summer, the filmmakers competed in the Beat the Clock 48 Hour Film Challenge. Then in the fall, the challenge was the Mystery Box. Finally the winter brought the Breakout Film Challenge. We’ll be screening the finalists and the award for Best Film will be announced, along with other individual awards.

Designed specifically for middle- and high-school students, this weeklong program during the Festival allows you to join other students in creating film from script to screen one day at a time. Each day different we explore different aspects of filmmaking with Industry Professionals. From film lovers and filmmakers, including writers and actors, these seminars are a great way to complement your school’s curriculum for real world exploration and application.
