PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the Revolution! Last year, we celebrated “Film is Art” - and this year, it’s time to bring that art to the masses! The great digital tools that filmmakers of all ages have available to them give everyone an opportunity to tell their story. From the top-of-the-line cameras to someone’s iPhone, the technology is literally in everyone’s hands to make a film. Now is the time to embrace the movement. Here at the Phoenix Film Festival, you can watch films made by artists that scrape together resources to bring their visions to life. You don’t need millions of dollars to make a good movie. All you need is story, characters that you embrace, and the willingness to embrace the independent. That’s why our programs like the Phoenix Film Festival, the Phoenix Film Society, IFP - Phoenix, and the Arizona Student Film Festival are important. Why our volunteers, staff, partners and sponsors are so enthusiastic and supportive. We believe in the Revolution. Together all of us are part of something that changes the world, every time the lights dim and our imaginations are ignited. To another great year! Viva La Revolution!

Chris LaMont Founder and President Phoenix Film Foundation

14TH ANNUAL PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 3-10, 2014

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Hey Everybody! Welcome to the 2014 Phoenix Film Festival! Thank you for joining the Film Revolution. The film revolution is about discovering new and creative films, learning about how they’re made and then spreading the word about the great films that you’ve found. In order to help you, we have spent the last year putting together our best film festival yet. We’re extremely proud of the film selections we have programmed this year. It’s the most difficult and most rewarding thing we do. I would like to thank the filmmakers who have trusted us to exhibit the films that they have poured their hearts and souls into. Each year I’m amazed at their talents and their story-telling ability. Be sure to congratulate them on their success of creating these great films that we get to enjoy. A great big thanks goes out to our sponsors. They’re a crucial piece of the festival puzzle and we ask you to support them all year long. Finally, please join me in thanking our volunteers. They are donating their time to help support this organization and for their love of film. Thanks for coming, enjoy the festival,

Jason Carney Executive Director

FESTIVAL 101

Welcome film lovers! You have arrived at one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “Coolest Film Festivals” So, what exactly do you do at a “film festival”? Well, to start you can be sure to check out the new films showing here – all of the movies at the PFF are Valley-wide premieres, with the occasional retrospective or classic film thrown in for good measure. Basically, you relax, eat some popcorn, and enjoy the movies! I want to see movies. What do I do? We have a couple different options for you! You can look through this magnificently handy program right in front of you, or browse the PFF website. (phoenixfilmfestival.com) All of the films screening at the festival are covered in the program and on our website. There’s an abundance of films including narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films, and more – all there for you to watch over the duration of the festival. Where do I get tickets to see the movies? Excellent question! You can buy passes online or at the Festival Ticket Center located a few doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatres – there’s a big sign; you can’t miss it. Tickets and passes bought online can be picked up at the Festival Ticket Center. After you get your passes, be sure to pick your films and get tickets for them – get there early so your choices aren’t sold out! If you have a ticket for a screening, you are guaranteed a seat. If you don’t want a pass, you can still buy single tickets both online and at the Ticket Center. But the best value is to buy a pass – with so many great films playing at the festival, you can save some money and catch more films! So I heard there’s other stuff going on? What’s that all about? Well, if you get tired of watching movies all day (and let’s face it, you’ll need to take a break at some point!), we’re giving you the opportunity to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! It’s our treat. Don’t forget to check out the Arizona Republic Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. Just follow the signs and you’ll find out just how awesome a PFF party is. Within the Party Pavilion you will find DJs, the bars and the parties, as well as the free seminars, our great partner booths where they love giving stuff away, and our silent auction where you can buy movie-related memorabilia and help out this amazing non-profit! And yes, this will be the best weekend of your life.

10

14TH ANNUAL PHOENIX FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 3-10, 2014

Do I have to wait in a line to see a movie? Yes, you do have to wait in line for the films. There are so many movies playing and so many audience members attending that there is no way around it. However, the audience lines will give you a chance to chit-chat with your fellow film lovers, and keep us organized to make sure you see the film in a timely manner. That’ll let you have fun! There are 3 different lines, based on which pass or ticket you hold. Line 1 is VIP/Filmmaker/Press – if you have one of those passes, then you can sit first! Line 2 is for Festival passholders. Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/ Single Ticket holders. If you want to be seated with one of the earlier lines, you can upgrade onsite at the Festival Ticket Center anytime during the Festival! What makes this “film festival” different than just going to the movies? It’s best to answer that question with another question: when you go to the movies are you able to interact with actual filmmakers? Here, the filmmakers talk before the films, they talk after the films, they talk during the seminars and workshops, and they talk during the parties. Luckily, they won’t talk during the movies. Don’t be afraid of them, they don’t bite! They’ll even talk to you if you introduce yourself. Okay, I’m sold. Anything else I should know? Please make sure that if you ever have any questions, ask our friendly Volunteer Staff! They are always smiling and wearing shirts that say Festival Crew! They are more than happy to help you out with any question you have about the festival. We have over one hundred volunteers who work on the festival. And just like you, they love movies too! Thanks for the help! You’ve been great. No problem. That’s what this page is for! One more thing – enjoy the Phoenix Film Festival! With Love, The Executive Staff of the Phoenix Film Festival

FEATURE-LENGTH FILM COMPETITION

45RPM Directed by: Juli Jackson Run Time: 97 minutes Cast: Liza Burns, Jason Thompson, Candyce Hinkle, Natalie Canerday Screening Times: Friday, April 4 at 7:25 pm Saturday, April 5 at 12:55 pm Sunday, April 6 at 11:55 am

Synopsis: 45RPM is a dark comedy that extends the world of the classic American road movie into multiple mediums while exploring rich Southern history. The film follows Charlie Clark, a struggling artist who seeks a connection between her artwork and her deceased father’s music. By trying to track down a rare copy of her father’s only cut on a 45 record, Charlie finds herself out of her element in Memphis with no leads. Louie Traxler, a record store owner and an obsessive collector, sees a chance to do what he does best. The two of them hit the road in a rumbling vintage Pontiac, scouring the South in search of the elusive 45 that hails from the heyday of ‘60s garage rock. Drawing on Arkansas’ unique musical history, showcasing local artists and animators, and featuring original music, 45RPM pulls together a wealth of untapped modern talent as well as Southern music legends like bluesman CeDell Davis, rockabilly pioneer Joyce Green, and early garage rockers like The Coachmen and The Spyders.

Jake Squared Directed by: Howard Goldberg Run Time: 100 minutes Cast: Elias Koteas, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Virginia Madsen, Jane Seymour, Mike Vogel Screening Times: Friday, April 4 at 1:10 pm Saturday, April 5 at 4:55 pm Sunday, April 6 at 9:55 am

Synopsis: Jake Klein, 50, sets out to make a movie. He hires an actor to play himself and throws a big party. His idea is to shoot the heck out of it and see what he gets. But, everything spins out of control as different, unexpected people show up. Old loves are there. New loves are there. His dead father, his mother when she was young, his kids, his ex-wife. Even his younger selves, Jake at 40, Jake at 30 and Jake at 17, are there, too! And every one of them has tons of advice on how to fix his screwed up life. Jake’s head reels as he staggers through what’s either a mystical experience, a nervous breakdown... or both!

King of Herrings Directed by: Eddie Jemison, Sean Richardson Run Time: 85 minutes Cast: David Jensen, Joe Chrest, Laura Lamson, Eddie Jemison, Wayne Pere, Andrea Frankle, John Mese, Carl Palmer Screening Times: Friday, April 4 at 3:30 pm Saturday, April 5 at 7:15 pm Sunday, April 6 at 12:15 pm

22

Synopsis: King of Herrings is an offbeat look at four Crescent City layabouts, who dream big in a small-change world of cards, women and endless cups of coffee. Their passionate blundering, like their rants, can be at once funny, poignant, ridiculous and heartbreaking. “Ditch” their self-appointed king, is an irascible son-of-abitch with a Napoleon complex and his pals love him for it, until one day. Until one day he pushes the self-tenured “Professor” too far. A game of threats, posturing and sexual ploys lead them down a dark but comic road in this exploration of what it is to be a man today. Filmed in black and white, this richly textured character study could be the bastard child of Woody Allen and Tom Waits, brought to life by an ensemble of real-life character actors who have known each other and worked together for over twenty-five years.

Little Help Was Arson delivers edge-of-your-seat suspense and mystery while transcending into human conflicts of forgiveness, religion, and re-defining the concepts of church, family and justice.

Misfire: The Rise and Fall of The Shooting Gallery Directed by: Whitney Ransick Run Time: 80 minutes Screening Times: Friday, April 4 at 5:30 pm Saturday, April 5 at 9:00 am Sunday, April 6 at 12:10 pm

24

Synopsis: Misfire: The Rise and Fall of the Shooting Gallery is a documentary about the independent film company responsible for arthouse hits You Can Count on Me and Laws of Gravity; a company that rose to the top of the independent film scene in the 90s before financial risk-taking and mismanagement caused it to crash. In 1991, a group of young filmmakers banded together to make films and found great success producing Billy Bob Thornton’s Academy Awardwinning Sling Blade. But the company’s success came at a cost, and it eventually collapsed under massive debt and questionable business practices. Misfire is a story of passion, hubris and missed opportunity, where the question of ‘what happened’ is asked not just of the company, but independent film itself.

Synopsis: Sheriff Joe Arpaio, ‘America’s Toughest Sheriff’, accused of blurring the line between public image and public policy, accused of creating a ‘culture of cruelty’ and even murder... and may be the most popular politician in America. Eight years in the making, our cameras had unprecedented access to the most notorious and controversial American lawman ever. A politician both loved and despised by millions around the world for his shocking personality, his harsh - some say brutal - treatment of pink underwearclad prisoners, his volunteer posse, his unapologetic handling of undocumented immigrants, and his complex, symbiotic relationship with the media. This important film pulls back the curtain of The Joe Show, revealing the truth behind this (in)famous politician.

After discovering a 13-year-old acting prodigy (Sharbino), he is poised to close the deal of a lifetime which would catapult his tween client and, at long last, himself, into the big time. With the support of his gorgeous new neighbor (Peet), he must wrangle the actress’ volatile, overprotective father, dodge a scheming producer (Felicity Huffman), and outwit his uber-slick nemesis (Sam Rockwell).
