2014-15 TENNESSEE STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

2014-15 SEASON REVIEW The 2014-15 campaign was an unpredictable one and it culminated into what could only be described as a historic run for the Lady Tigers. The season was one filled with ups and downs in which the Lady Tigers were faced with adversity early on. Through the first seven contests of the season, TSU only managed to win one game but the team continued to persevere despite frustrating circumstances. After finishing the non-conference slate with a 3-8 record, TSU turned its attention to the Ohio Valley Conference schedule. The Lady Tigers opened league play with a 5-1 mark before three straight losses forced the team to refocus. The turning point was a closed-door meeting in which the team came together for a common goal. From there the Lady Tigers won seven straight to close out the regular season. After being predicted to finish the OVC race in sixth place the Lady Tigers posted a 12-4 record and went into the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed.

Still, outside of the players, coaches and those closest to the program, many did not expect what happened next. In the opening round of the OVC Tournament, Tennessee State dispatched Morehead State, 81-66, before knocking off, No. 2 seed SIUE, 71-59, in the semifinals. The ultimate test came on Saturday, March 7, when the Lady Tigers faced four-time defending OVC Champion UT Martin in the Championship. The Skyhawks went 16-0 in OVC play and were seeking their fifth straight title. TSU gave UTM all it could handle and outscored the opponent 11-7 in overtime to secure the win. The victory gave Tennessee State its first OVC Tournament Championship in 20 years and extended the program’s winning streak to a record 10 games. SENIOR LEADERSHIP The four seniors (Chelsea Hudson, Rachel Allen, Briana Morrow and LaTeasha Hill) account for nearly half of TSU’s scoring. Hudson is TSU’s leading scorer and

She finished the contest with 22 points and came up with clutch buckets when TSU needed them the most, especially in overtime. She was named the MVP and to the all tournament team for her efforts. She is the third leading scorer on the team with an average of 8.7 points per game. She has registered double-digits 10 times and scored at least 15 points five times. CLICKING AT THE RIGHT TIME Tennessee State saved its best run for the end of the season as the Lady Tigers won seven straight to close out the regular season and then went undefeated in the OVC tournament. The 10 consecutive wins is a school record. LEADING THE WAY Head Coach Larry Inman, in his third season at Tennessee State, led the team to an OVC Tournament Title for the fist time in 20 years. He now has a total of seven OVC tournament crowns at three different schools. Fourth year assistant coach Joe Bonham was the only familiar face on the coaching staff at the beginning of the season as Inman brought in two new assistants. LeCoe Willingham joined the staff after a 10-year WNBA career while former Middle Tennessee standout Chelsia Lymon also joined the TSU coaching ranks. A FITTING END On Jan. 31, 2015 TSU welcomed back to campus members of the 1995 women’s basketball team that won the OVC Championship that season. The former Lady Tigers were honored with a reception and celebrated during halftime of the basketball game for the 20th reunion of their accomplishment. Only two months later, the current women’s basketball team accomplished the same feat. Current Athletics Director Teresa Phillips was on hand to witness both wins, this time from the stands as she served as the head coach of the 1995 Championship Team.

Sophomores Jemilah Leonard (14.5 minutes per game) and Diamond Beatty (7.7 minutes per game) combine for an average of 5.2 minutes for TSU off the bench. Leonard notched double-figures in two games including a career-high 13 points at Austin Peay. POST PLAY The TSU post players average 33.4 of the team’s 67.4 points per game. She scored in double-digts nine times including matching a career-high 17 points. Senior LaTeasha Hill came off the bench for the Lady Tigers and scored a career-high 10 points at Murray State. She averages 6.0 minutes per game. Freshman Sam Palma has only saw action in 18 games while averaging 5.5 mpg. 2015 OVC CHAMPIONS • 1994 OVC CHAMPIONS • 1995 OVC CHAMPIONS • 2 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

SEVEN AT THREE Head Coach Larry Inman has seven OVC Tournament titles at three different schools: Middle Tennessee, Eastern Kentucky & TSU. 20 YEARS IN THE MAKING On Jan. 31 during the TSU vs. JSU game, members of the 1995 team came back to campus for the 20th reunion of their OVC Championship to be honored during halftime. Two months later, the current TSU Lady Tigers brought the hardware back to campus once again. A MOTHER’S DREAM BECOME’S DAUGHTER’S REALITY Senior Briana Morrow was just one year old when she sat in the crowd to watch her mother Darlene Crawley - Morrow take the court and win an OVC Championship as a TSU Lady Tiger in 1995. For years Darlene wanted her daughter to experience the same feeling. On March 7, the two switched places as Darlene watched her daughter win an OVC Championship. Briana wears the same number (5) that her mother wore 20 years ago. ALLEN FOR THREE Rachel Allen made a career-high five three-pointers in the semifinals game versus Morehead State on Thursday. She was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Chelsea Hudson was named to the Teresa Phillips Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 15 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games. The TLP Classic was named after former TSU head coach and current Athletics Director Teresa Phillips. WNBA EXPERIENCE First year women’s basketball assistant coach, Le’Coe Willingham, brings a wealth of professional experience to the Lady Tiger staff. Willingham played ten years in the WBNA and won two championships, with the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm.

When you think about Tennessee State University, many things come to mind – a rich heritage and legacy in athletics, academics, entertainment, research and service. Tennessee State University has long been a rising star among universities across the country. It is designated as one of the best public historically black colleges and universities in the nation, and it’s not by accident. Tennessee State University is among the few historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) with a chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the oldest and largest freshman honor society in the United States and a Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the most prestigious honor society comprising all academic disciplines. A great deal of focus has been given to improving the academic environment – strengthening our research reputation, attracting and retaining the best and brightest students, encouraging service-focused programs, engaging and supporting expert faculty in diverse fields, building on our student-centered philosophy and holding steadfast to our motto of “Think. Work. Serve.” Today, Tennessee State University’s student enrollment is more than 8,000. There are more than 400 faculty and more than 1,200 staff who are part of the university’s team. Additionally, the university’s rich strength in embracing diversity is evident with 45 countries and 46 states representative of the student body. The beauty and accessibility of the university’s main campus is a plus with now 65 buildings on more than 450 acres. Complimenting the main campus is a newly renovated downtown campus that features a simulated stock-trading center, a student computer laboratory and continuing education, distance learning and multimedia services. The university is arming students with the intellectual resources to compete in a global environment. In support of that, important partnerships have been established with leading global companies such as Boeing, Raytheon, Dell, IBM and others, in which both funding and service-learning opportunities are currently active.
