I

t is refreshing to see so many new workplace design concepts coming up recently. With rising demands for more flexibility to ensure better health and safety in the office as well as allow remote working options, designers are rising to the challenge to create optimised spaces that boost productivity and morale in the workplace. I would like to extend my gratitude to our featured designer, MGroup for sharing their innovative workplace designs in this issue. From the digitally empowered Ricoh’s Asia Pacific regional headquarters and Maybank’s banking suites to contemporary offices for premier financial banks, each of their exceptional projects shows how changing needs in our work environment can result in remarkable spaces that perfectly merge tech-enhanced elements with people-centric interior features. In terms of office furniture collections, they are similarly impressive with their well-conceived concepts and high-performance features aimed at offering a high performance yet ergonomic experience in the office. Well-being and comfort take the lead, as the Steelcase Flex Collection and Okamura’s graceful Rin work chair exemplify. Cappellini’s classic Tate Chair also offers a vibrant combination of style and function to complement modern workspaces. For a sense of privacy, Kettal’s Phone Booth O collection provides a comfortable work zone amid an open plan office setting.

reativity and inspiration. Authenticity and quality. Cappellini perfectly epitomises these values in the brand’s expansive collection of contemporary avante garde furniture. An internationally renowned furniture design brand, Cappellini gained its global recognition from decades of success in the design sphere. From iconic pieces that earned a spot at prestigious museums, including London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and New York’s Museum of Modern Art, to a portfolio of high-profile contract projects, along with collaborations with famous designers with the likes of Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson, Marcel Wanders, Bouroullec brothers and Nendo, as well as other notables, Cappellini is unequivocally at the forefront of Italian design excellence. Cappellini’s success comes from humble beginnings. Established in 1946 by Enrico Cappellini, Cappellini started as a small traditional furniture workshop in Carugo, Italy. In 1977, Giulio Cappellini joined his father’s company, bringing the brand to new heights of success. Over the years, Giulio, who fulfils the role of Art Director of Cappellini, strategically transformed the company’s business with an impressive collection of premium designer furniture solutions. Today, under the leadership of this iconic figure in the design scene, Cappellini thrives as a trendsetting design brand with flagship stores in Milan, New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London, as well as Cappellini showrooms and partners all over the world. On the contract side of the business, clients from different parts of the world turn to Cappellini to find the best furnishing solutions for their properties. These large-scale design projects range from the hospitality sector, public and commercial office spaces to acclaimed retails spaces and private residences. In this interview, Giulio Cappellini shares more about the brand and how Cappellini aligns with the emerging trends in the current design arena. Artwright (AHB Technology Sdn Bhd) is the exclusive partner for Cappellini in Malaysia, with the showroom located at 10, Persiaran KLCC, 50450 Kuala Lumpur.

San Siro

Q: Can you briefly introduce yourself and the Cappellini brand? A: My name is Giulio Cappellini. I am an architect and designer as well as the Art Director of Cappellini. Established in 1946, Cappellini is an Italian design company specialising in furniture for offices, residences, and hospitality spaces. Our products are designed by renowned designers worldwide, including Jasper Morrison, Marcel Wanders, the Bouroullec brothers, Nendo and many more. Q: In your opinion, what are some of the Cappellini’s unique values or attributes? A: Cappellini aims to be a leading company in contemporary design; hence, we continuously invest in research and innovation. Our research involves new materials, textures, and manufacturing processes. We constantly try to anticipate future trends and come up with new approaches to design. At Cappellini, we offer versatile and multifunctional products that are also highly appealing from an aesthetic point of view. I believe this is what makes us different from other brands. Q: In terms of workspaces, what is Cappellini’s design approach, especially when it comes to meeting emerging market demands for the new normal work environments? A: Workspaces have dramatically evolved over the years. These spaces are becoming more flexible in terms of layout, as well as material and colour selections. For example, we are diverting from the classic black and white palette in favour of brighter colours and natural materials. For Cappellini, the office is a place where people want to be and feel at home. Due to the worldwide pandemic, our workspaces are continuously evolving; thus, it is crucial for a forward-looking company like Cappellini to have the correct answers and solutions, tailor-made for every need and market request. Q: What are some of your product highlights for 2021? Can you talk about the design direction for these collections?

Hiroi

A: For 2021, Cappellini presented a profound collection of new products, which perfectly reflects the company’s DNA: simple yet sophisticated, modern, and innovative, and suitable for both residential and contract environments. The collection includes the Litos sofa, a flexible seating system with beautiful organic shapes designed by Sebastian Herkner and the San Siro by Jasper Morrison, a multifunctional armchair with perfect proportions and dimensions. There is also the Hiroi, a minimalistic armchair for hospitality spaces and offices. Featuring solid wood and saddle leather, this chair is designed by Jansky & Dundera, two young designers from the Czech Republic. We have also launched a series of decorative lamps, such as the beautiful glass lamp Cord by Werner Aisslinger, along with a range of accessories, new and vibrant lacquer colours, materials, and fabrics. Every single product represents our fundamental values as well as elegance and beauty that go beyond trends. Q: What are some design trends this year that you think would make an impact on the way we work and live? A: The recent pandemic has profoundly changed the way we live in our homes and offices. Today we live, work, and connect to the world from home, so our own place has become almost like a stage for the outside world. There is less privacy, in a way. We are also spending less time in the office, having fewer social contacts with people, but more virtual meetings throughout the day. It goes without saying that we need more flexible and adaptable spaces that reflect our personality and everyday needs. Predicting a new trend in this specific context is really challenging as things are constantly changing. Nevertheless, most of us would lean towards living spaces that are quiet and serene, illuminated by warm lights, and have a neutral yet charming palette of colours. We would also want the freedom to mix and match furnishing and furniture with different styles.

Cord

Q: What or who inspires your design process? A: Anyone can take inspiration anywhere and from simple things, as long as you are always curious and open-minded. For me, I observe nature, architecture, and my environment. I like discovering people’s behaviour, how they dress, where they live…all these are wonderful sources of inspiration. Q: Can you talk about one of your latest contract projects (workspaces) and how Cappellini contributed to the overall design concept and ambience? A: I recently worked on a workplace project located in Germany. We were meticulous with selecting the right materials and colours. The result is a modern and dynamic environment that perfectly reflects our design approach to this kind of project. Q: What’s next for Cappellini in the near future? Anything new and exciting in the pipeline? A: Currently, we think it is no longer enough to design and produce furniture. We must work in a more comprehensive way to develop new landscapes for our homes and office as well as public spaces. The new environment will need to reflect our new approach towards work and living. There is an emerging need for more flexible and lighter creations. For instance, simple objects with a clear design that people can easily relate to. It is important that we create what we call “long sellers” and not only “bestsellers” – products, which are timeless today and in the future. This, I believe, is the challenge of contemporary design.

s a global technology provider, Ricoh strives to improve work-life through empowering digital workplaces with high-tech solutions. To infuse the company’s core values into the design of their Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore, MGroup employed two key elements aimed at optimising space usage and boosting productivity. First, an activity-based working (ABW) concept, which divides the office space into four main zones: workstations, the e-Cafe, meeting spaces, and collaborative areas. The second, a suite of smart office solutions with an ecosystem of data-driven hardware and software for creating an agile digital workspace within the ABW scheme. The smart office concept begins at the entrance where visitors can sign in digitally via a visitor management system at the front concierge. Next to the front entrance is an elegant waiting lobby done up in ash wood trellis, light grey marble tiles and red accents to reflect Ricoh’s corporate colour. At the corner, a Ricoh Collaboration Board and two units of Ricoh projectors are on display.

The waiting lobby leads to the meeting zone, which accommodates a group of flexible meeting and discussion rooms. Designed with operable wall panels integrated with acoustic treatment, each of these rooms can be combined to form a larger space for conferences or training sessions. The meeting zone can also be opened up to merge with the pantry and collaboration area for town hall meetings. Acoustic fabric panelling with geometrical patterns blends in with the frosted glass panels, creating a stylish vibe in the meeting zone.

The world of work has been in a state of flux for well over a year, with digital solutions and technology integration coming to the fore more and more to enable flexible working. “No longer will a person’s job be defined by where they work: It will be defined by how they work.” A modern workspace and the design detail organisations need to take into consideration now should revolve around this employee collaboration, how it’s fostered, and how the employer can enable this. Workplace technology should improve culture and connections, enable better teamwork, and support overall workplace collaboration. A major part of this will be a move away from office space that is focused on maximising capacity and getting the most out of every square foot. Employees will want to come into the office only when needed, and only into a more spaced-out environment where they can feel safe. Right-sizing an individual environment for this approach could be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be guesswork: analytics and scheduling solutions can shed light on how exactly a space is required, the design

elements needed, and how best to balance that with the needs of every employee and the teams as a whole. Ricoh utilises its state-of-the-art workspace scheduling technology in their new HQ, which combines the best of office and remote working, giving the choice to the employees when they need spaces to work. This smart workplace scheduling provides user-friendly tools for booking anywhere, any time.

BOTTOM: The office layout is based on an activity-based working (ABW) concept, which divides the space into four main zones.

Ricoh’s office is also an interactive workplace with ample opportunity for impromptu discussions and creative conversations. More than just a space for taking a break or having meals, the pantry and an adjacent e-Café offer employees a conducive place for informal meetups or ad-hoc brainstorming sessions that can take place during lunch or over coffee breaks. The high, exposed ceiling spray-painted in white provides a clean backdrop for the light wood flooring and neutral-toned furniture pieces. Fresh indoor plants and artificial greenery along with a green wall punctuate the space, bringing in a lively atmosphere. A kitchenette with neutral-toned cabinetry and a unique bar counter further complement the café-themed room, which accommodates various seating options. In the centre of the space is a Ricoh 55-inch Collaboration Board that serves as a source of entertainment during breaks and a collaboration meeting tool to provide information related to ongoing meetings and other office matters. The e-Café also incorporates a powerful 6,400-lumen Ricoh projector, which comes with a sizeable 150-inch screen for town hall gatherings.

Apart from serving the local sales and service network, Ricoh Asia Pacific also covers and supports the marketing and sales activities in the Asia Pacific region. With this in mind, the company requested a touch of cultural identity in the office design to represent their presence and growth in this region. It was also crucial that the design element does not compromise the sophisticated, modern aesthetics of the workspace. MGroup drew inspiration from the iconic landmarks at Marina Bay Sands and designed a massive tree-like sculpture that bears a resemblance to the Supertree Grove at the Gardens by the Bay. Featuring a composition of wood strips that gently bend outward and “branch” up to the ceiling, the tree sculpture is placed as a centrepiece in the middle of the collaboration area. Surrounding the tree are low benches and a display area for Ricoh’s new digital technology solutions. Greenery in planter boxes and natural light streaming in from the windows give the space a cosy park-like atmosphere for facilitating collaborative work.

RICOH 050 TOP: The cluster seating area consists of tables in two heights, enabling employees to sit or stand while working.

In this office, Ricoh moves away from traditional workstations where employees are assigned to specific desks throughout their work tenure. Their teams frequently shift between different workspaces throughout the day to carry out a myriad of work tasks and meetings. Thus, the best solution is an agile workspace that allows employees to choose where they want to work. This approach is also in line with the company’s work culture to foster flexibility in terms of communications and collaboration as well as promote higher productivity while catering to the well-being of their employees. Taking the company’s workflow into consideration, MGroup created a variety of workstations ranging from hotdesks with digital booking systems to cluster seating and collaborative corners. The cluster seating area breaks away from the monotony of conventional work desks to provide a group seating experience for teams who are handling a project together. Irregularly shaped tables in two heights offer a spacious workspace, allowing employees to sit or stand while working. Green carpeting and plants complement the tables, while the exposed ceiling painted in white maintains the clean and modern look of the space.

One of the pivotal elements for the office’s tech-optimised work environment is equipping every work desk, primarily the hotdesks, with a digital booking system integrated with human sensor. This system effectively eliminates the need for fixed workstations, thus increasing workspace efficiency. Upon detecting human presence, the sensor will record desk usage and generate a seating pattern to manage workspace bookings. Users can conveniently key in their booking details, and the system will match them with a vacant desk. Over time, the system will provide data comparison using seating trends, offering insight on optimal desk and space usage. The sensor will also adjust lighting levels according to current activity, contributing to energy savings in the long run.

iverting away from a conventional design approach, the Maybank Private Banking suite in Singapore infuses a breath of fresh air to banking spaces with its travel-inspired interior concept. The entire floor, designed with wealthy, well-travelled clients in mind, is divided into imaginative zones, which include themes like an airport lounge, luxury cruise, East Asian train, hot air balloon, yacht, limousine, and a private jet setting. The vibrant concept starts at the entrance foyer designed to simulate an exclusive airport lounge. As the motorised door opens, visitors arrive at a cosy lounge area adorned with a custom-made carpet showcasing the Southeast Asia map. Easy chairs placed next to the windows provide guests with spectacular views of the Esplanade amid the seascape as they sit down for casual discussions or coffee breaks. On one of the feature walls, triangular gold-tinted mirror panels that mimic the Esplanade’s iconic durian spikes create a stunning visual point of interest within the space.

The lounge leads towards different thematic meeting rooms, each with its own whimsical interior features. The boardroom, which resembles a private jet interior, evokes the experience of having meetings high above the sky while the meeting room next to the lounge is beautifully done up like a luxury cruise ship. In another meeting space, a hot air balloon theme is achieved using different shapes of bubble lights, colourful carpeting, and a swing chair. Thematic aesthetics aside, the meeting rooms are also equipped with acoustic and privacy features. For instance, the usage of gypsum partition and internal rock wool as well as absorption panels ensure better sound control. The glass panels and doors are also designed with an electronic frosting film solution, whereby, with the push of a button, the glass will be fully opaque to offer complete privacy.

contemporary and streamlined corporate space was envisioned for the Maybank Treasury office in Singapore to represent the establishment’s prominence in the global trading arena. As privacy and sound control are crucial in this office, one of the key features is its well-planned acoustic treatment. Situated right next to the reception area overlooking panoramic views of Marina Bay Sands, the boardroom is fully fitted with acoustic components, which include acoustic control for the ceiling, three-layer thick gypsum partitions with internal rock wool, double layer soundproof glass, and electronic frosting film solution for the glass panels and doors. Aesthetic-wise, the boardroom features a large marble conference table customised with concealed sockets as well as a cantilevered video conferencing system within the ceiling for a clean and sophisticated appearance. Designed for expandability, the boardroom can be further merged with the adjacent meeting rooms via its operable acoustic panels.

At the reception area, natural marble stone is used prominently to conjure a sleek and modern look. Large Italian marble tiles envelop the entire floor space, complemented by metallic textured glass and warm wood on the feature wall. For this space, MGroup moved away from the traditional reception counter that is often placed facing the front entrance. Here, an all-white concierge counter is positioned off-centre to afford more space for the waiting area, resulting in an inviting atmosphere while bringing focus to Maybank’s bright yellow logo on the signage wall. This approach also creates a touch of visual balance to the timber trellis on the right where the textured glass wall ends diagonally with a sharp angle. The wood trellis continues all the way to the ceiling and conceals a series of LED lighting strips that illuminate the space with a cosy glow.

ocated in the heart of Phnom Penh’s financial hub, Maybank Cambodia stands out prominently with its contemporary facade, taking the spotlight as one of the key landmarks in the area. As one of MGroup’s most comprehensive overseas projects to date, the firm provided a well-rounded scope of consultancy services, including project management, interior design, M&E design, QS works as well as facade signage and lighting design for the bank’s 12-storey headquarters. The brief called for a sophisticated and customer-friendly interior concept while keeping stringently to Maybank’s corporate identity and Singapore’s standards of quality. To achieve this, MGroup employed the use of quality materials and installation methods from Singapore. At the front entrance leading to the main banking hall, Maybank’s signage captures attention instantly with its bright yellow logo. With a 6-metre-high ceiling and glass panels wrapped around the front facade, the banking hall conveys a welcoming and vibrant ambience. An ATM area is also incorporated at the front lobby for customers’ easy access.

For the main customer banking hall, polished floor tiles and smooth Corian countertops imported from Singapore lend a sleek and elegant feel to the space. The teller countertops feature a modern curvilinear design, meticulously constructed to comply with Singapore’s quality standards. Gold hues, which reflect Maybank’s branding, accentuate the hall via different elements, including gold-coloured tinted mirror finishing for the pillars and gold-toned glass for the signage wall. The centrepiece, a curved coffer lighting feature, adds to the interior’s classy aesthetics. The rest of the walls are enhanced with Alucobond panels with metallic finish for a glossy effect while banking posters spruce up the wall behind the teller counters. To separate the ATM area from the main hall, the design team opted for an operable glass wall.

The general understanding about trading is that investments come with upturns and downturns. MGroup translated this trading concept into the ceiling design via two approaches. First, the ceiling height was raised from 3 metres to 4.5 metres to evoke a higher value of space. Next, the design team optimised the extended ceiling space using irregular triangles with protruding axis points set in varying heights to portray upward and downward investment trends. A selection of triangles is merged with the brightly lit Barrisol ceiling, resulting in a modern lighting effect to bring out the hub’s contemporary aesthetic. To further enhance the contemporary theme, MGroup designed a series of circular semi-open cubicles constructed from curved double-layer glass with built-in LED lighting. On the sleek surface of the cubicles, the frosted finishing displays the trading market platforms of different countries.

The lighting strips flow to and from the rooms, linking the spaces together. The LED lighting also changes colour intermittently to signify human movement. To maintain a uniform look throughout the meeting spaces, the design team employed curved acoustic panels for the walls, echoing back the curved wall panels present at the reception area. Thick black lines that mirror the lighting strips within the ceiling accentuate the floor, while the glass panels are adorned with light blue motifs. In the boardroom, a large conference table anchors the room to set off a touch of formality. classic and highly versatile piece, the Tate Chair was first designed by Jasper Morrison and produced by Cappellini in 2000 for London’s Tate Modern, an institution for art galleries. Since then, this chair, which comprises upholstered or wooden chair shells on a stainless-steel base, had been making headlines as one of Cappellini’s bestseller. “Born for Tate Modern’s cafe, these chairs have been really appreciated by the market. They have been inserted in the company’s permanent catalogue and continue to be a long seller,” says Cappellini. Over the years, Tate has expanded into a vibrant collection of chairs and stools. Today, the Tate collection has been given a fresh new look using new finishes and colours, resulting in three new seat models that adapt seamlessly to various environments, whether at home, in hotels, or workplaces. “More than twenty years after the launch of the original project, the Tate family of chairs and stools by Jasper Morrison has been completely renewed in its look and finishes to give a touch of freshness and innovation to one of the bestselling products of the Cappellini catalogue,” Cappellini elaborates. “Three different seat models, three different base options, and a wide range of colours and finishes make the Tate chair an extremely versatile object.”

These three new models include Tate Color, Tate Wood, and Tate Soft, each featuring an array of stackable chairs and stools of two different heights, with a high or low backrest complemented by a profound revision of the original design’s look and finishes – as reflected in its name. Tate Color stands out with its aniline-stained ash plywood, which comes in a variety of striking hues like white, mud, anthracite, pumpkin, brick, grass green, petrol, and Prussian blue. Perfect for breakout rooms, pantry cafes, or creative workspaces, Tate Color’s vibrant and trendy palette contributes to a lively atmosphere in the workplace. Wood tones take the lead in the Tate Wood series, which features ash plywood with mahogany or oak veneer (with a natural or stained white, wengé, or black finish) for the chair’s shell. Tate Wood exudes a warm vibe with its natural tones, making it ideal for spaces where a welcoming atmosphere is called for.

THREE DIFFERENT SEAT MODELS, THREE DIFFERENT BASE OPTIONS, AND A WIDE RANGE OF COLOURS AND FINISHES MAKE THE TATE CHAIR AN EXTREMELY VERSATILE OBJECT.

The third model, Tate Soft comes with fixed upholstery (in fabric or leather). Fabric upholstery offers a nature-inspired palette of colours ranging from offwhites, beiges, browns, and dark greys, while the palette for chairs upholstered in leather consists of brighter tones like shades of blues, greens, reds, browns, and more. All three of these updated Tate models offer a wide range of base options: four legs with a satined stainless steel finish or matte satined lacquer in the shades of white, mud, anthracite, pumpkin, brick, grass green, petrol, and Prussian blue; with a sled base, in satined stainless steel, or matte varnished in white, anthracite or mud; and with five polished chrome spokes, with feet or castors. The four-legged version in stainless steel can also be equipped with a reclinable table in thick black laminate. CAPPELLINI.COM ARTWRIGHT.COM (exclusive partner in Malaysia)

THE JOURNEY OF PERCEPTION

B

orn in Singapore in 1921, Lim Tze Peng is one of Singapore’s most significant artists and a living legend. Renowned for his Chinese ink creations of post-independence Singapore, he also practices Chinese calligraphy. Alongside local and international exhibitions, his masterpieces are exhibited in prominent Singapore institutions and part of many prestigious collections. Lim has been bestowed several awards including the Special Prize at the Commonwealth Art Exhibition in England in 1977 and the prestigious Cultural Medallion in Singapore in 2003. In May 2012, he broke records with the sale of his works at a Christies auction in Hong Kong. Lim is famously known for his Chinese ink drawings and paintings of Chinatown and the Singapore River produced in the early 1980s after having embarked on his artistic journey in the 1950s. His paintings of these landmarks signified and reflected the change these prime locations were undergoing during urban development in Singapore. These paintings are a memory of what Lim saw as a Singaporean watching his kampong transform into an urbanized capital, and documented the cultural diversity and transformation of the city. Lim shows that Singapore’s multi-cultural environment may provide a context in which artists can respond to a variety of influences without being trapped in a defensive form of traditionalism or a superficial form of cosmopolitanism. Having a solid foundation in Chinese philosophy, art and culture, Lim also practiced Chinese calligraphy, especially in the 1990s. Lim’s creative impulses for his new works is clear, where previously it was “I see and I paint, now it’s I reflect and I paint.” His latest series of calligraphic works reveal a new level of artistic maturity - their raw energy reflect an aggressive swiftness and decisive ferocity, injecting the calligraphy with invigorating tension.
