OFFICE CONCEPT

STREAMLINED SOPHISTICATION AT ITS BEST Office culture has undergone quite an evolution over the last while. With work environments becoming increasingly fluid or digital and the escalating number of staffers working remotely, we’ve traversed well beyond the open-plan office. Given these recent proceedings, there’s something to be said for clearcut workplace design solutions that lend themselves to multiple opportunities for creative expression.

I

f there’s a firm that understands the potent effects of merging simplicity, functionality and contemporary good looks, it’s SW1 Solutions. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, this noteworthy Kuala Lumpur-based outfit has made waves beyond and within Malaysia’s borders for the past decade. Balancing timeless elegance with on-trend utility, impressive projects such as the British International School in Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry are reflective of SW1’s signature sensibility. We are truly honoured and delighted to feature the work of this incredibly established firm in the following pages. In every issue, we aim to spotlight brands or products that are, in their own way, changing the course of how we live and work. For us, acoustic pods have been part of that sweeping tide. Now a default fixture in collaborative workplaces, this innovative enclosure, teamed with accompanying acoustic accessories for enhanced privacy, has been a godsend to open-plan offices in terms of its combined modularity, functionality and flexibility. Readers might also notice that we’ve also been all over height-adjustable tables as of late. Personalisation is still king in every successful office and what better way to elevate your work experience to a whole other level than with a customisable desktop, we say? Have a favourite workplace gem or solution that you can’t live without? We’d love to hear about it. Until then, read on with our compliments…

Cubicle seating solutions are oftentimes terribly run-of-the-mill. Coppice, designed by Orangebox, is anything but. Its vaguely honeycomb-like arrangement is unexpectedly upbeat, thanks to a retro colour palette and softly textured surfaces. In addition, this unique design is composed of panels that accommodate ease of passage for multiple cables, rendering it a tech nerd’s dream. While portable storage systems may not instantly come to mind when it comes to aesthetically pleasing office furniture, Boxie begs to differ. Designed by Claudio Dondoli and Marco Pocci, this sleekly compact series score highly on function and good looks. Equipped with multiple drawers, integrated handles and set on lockable castors, Boxie’s lightweight composition is emphasised by an appealing arrangement of minimalist lines that render this design both classic and contemporary.

A crowded waiting room area can at times be unnerving when all one needs is a bit of quiet. When done right, cleverly configured seating is all it takes to restore peace of mind. Comprising an armchair and a two-seater sofa set on black, white or chrome painted steel legs, Kontext’s low and high back components transform the pieces into private nooks, allowing you to feel at ease, even in the most congested setting.

Versatility and timelessness are key when comes to furniture that will ‘grow’ with the space in question. Offering a wide spectrum of variations, 7900 Creva soft is a winsome collection of stools, benches, sofas and armchairs that’s certain to appease every preference while conforming to public areas of all sizes. Basic modules may be transformed into comfortable supports via upholstered side elements while optional power and date modules make the collection perfectly suitable for co-working scenarios.

Swami Jayaraman, Managing Director of SW1 Solutions

“A DECADE OF CREATING EXCEPTIONAL WORKPLACES FOR EXCEPTIONAL CLIENTS.”

“Recently, I was asked to describe SW1 in less than 10 words. Easy, I thought. But when I tried to answer this seemingly run-of the-mill question, it just made me ask myself even more questions: how to distil what defines SW1 as a company? How to convey the intellect, hard work and learning garnered over the 10 years of the company’s existence? How to acknowledge and celebrate our clientele who are so instrumental in making SW1 what it is? Most importantly, how do I keep the answer short (something that those who know me will attest is quite a challenge for me at the best of times!). Nevertheless, it was a great question. After what seemed like ages (actually it was just a couple of minutes), the answer came to me: “SW1 creates exceptional spaces for exceptional clients”. The question was answered with three words to spare. I think this says it all and as you flick through this magazine and read more about SW1, I hope you will agree.”

REACHING GREATER HEIGHTS

It all started with the vision to provide worldclass solutions and a set of principles to deliver this vision with uncompromising integrity. This was how SW1’s journey began and since their first step into the world of design, they have pushed boundaries and strived to do the right thing. Whether it’s through innovation, statutory compliance, ethical practice, wellness or the environment, they relentlessly and passionately work towards putting their best foot forward. Through this they have developed a methodology that is genuinely new and truly addresses the needs of the modern workplace whilst raising standards and expectations… something that their clients are always seeking to do themselves. This is achieved by always focusing on what is important: people. 10 years on, their vision and principles continue to stay

strong, giving them a solid foundation to grow a team that Swami is truly proud of. In all that SW1 set out to do, they will continue to work hard, stay humble and embrace the appetite to do the right thing. It’s this way of being that will ensure they continue to evolve and reach greater heights. Sic Parvis Magna!

“SW1 STRENGTHENS THEIR TEAM TO MEET EXPECTATIONS FOR THE NEXT DECADE, EMPLOYING TALENTED INDIVIDUALS TO INCREASE THEIR SERVICE OFFER.”

SW1 SOLUTIONS

SW1’s unique suite of services is like no other, harmoniously fitting together like a jigsaw. Strategic Planning, Interior Design, Branding, Project Management, Cost Management, Construction and Change Management are woven together in a carefully crafted methodology that plugs in and out of businesses seamlessly while acting like another department within their clients’ organisation structure. The old adage that if you “fail to plan you plan to fail” is what drives this most important of services. It is a standard pre-requisite for every project undertaken. Strategic Planning makes everything more focused and potent as well as helping to plug into the client’s organisation as if they were their own dedicated department.

Strategic Planning involves outlining clear objectives and how to measure them as well as proper researching, brief and information gathering. Also, it involves setting up of proper approvals processes, committees and stakeholders with a view to keeping them informed and in control of their project from the outset. How this is done varies from client to client and involves workshoping, surveying, data gathering, interviewing, profiling, questionnaires and other methods which are experiential and empirical. This is one of the most important aspects of the project process that leads perfectly into Interior Design.

A UNIQUE SUITE OF SERVICES

Autonomous or combined in part or whole; that is the beauty of SW1’s services and methodology. Clients will benefit from SW1’s customised solutions to address the requirements of any given project. At SW1, project and construction methodology are based on the model of likely constraints taking place in projects where various strategies have been idealized to overcome them. Cost is the glue that binds every project together and it sits right at the centre of SW1’s approach. In view of this,

SW1 advocates Cost Management as an essential process which involves the planning and controlling of the budget to give optimal outcomes for the given spend. Put simply, it is a “bang for buck” approach which focuses on value and long term gains – something that clients will definitely appreciate. SW1 also provides comprehensive and competitive access to the industry’s supply chain and constantly maintain, research and develop products, services and materials.

DESIGNING SPACE FOR PEOPLE “THE BEST DESIGN SOLUTIONS DERIVE FROM A STRATEGY THAT PROVIDES CLEAR DIRECTION. WE LOOK INTO CREATING THE LOOK, FEEL AND FUNCTION OF THE SPACE.”

032

Christine Teoh Senior Design Manager

Design is an integral process. Based on this understanding, SW1 adopts a traditional form versus function approach to generate substantial creative output that not only looks great but also works well with everything. The methodology splits the process into two key components which not only addresses form and function separately but also allows these components to influence one another. Spatial planning incorporates function to the space and generally involves preparation of plans showing workflow, facilities, work points and other elements to ensure the client’s requirements are met. Design development focuses on the look and feel of the space as well as the visualisation of materials,

furniture and finishes. This approach to design ensures maximum effectiveness. Each aspect involves and requires different skill sets and engages specialisation of resources. This approach further enables SW1 to speed up the design process and run each aspect of the design activities in tandem with each other whilst complying to authority regulations when necessary submissions need to be carried out. SW1’s approach to Interior Design is backed up by the latest tools which complement and enhance every interaction in the design process. Traditional 2D methods have been replaced with the latest intelligent 3D model-based process called Building Information Modelling or BIM for short.

BIM facilitates better project coordination and collaboration with stakeholders and produces more efficient workflows and integrated 3D visualizations, resulting in improved project outcomes for clients. SW1 uses numerous types of software to implement their BIM process and are particularly proud of their REVIT team. REVIT is considered to be the most ideal, robust, functional and flexible BIM tool used by the top design and architecture firms the world over. As Interior Design fulfils different requirements by architects and engineers from structural to technical, SW1 will continue to improve technical documentation from the inside out through the implementation of REVIT.

PREPARING PEOPLE FOR THE SPACE

From cubicles to open floor plans, office layouts have changed significantly over the years. The idea of working in a space that best reflects the task at hand is known as Activity Based Working (“ABW”). Many companies have now realized that employees need options — options that accommodate the various types of work they do on a daily basis as well as their most productive working style. Apart from office planning and design, another key success factor in any workplace is Change Management. Planning for change is a journey that revolves around the human element and SW1’s value is to manage employees to view change from a different perspective. Employee experience in any organization can be comprised of three distinct environments: the cultural environment, the physical environment and the technological environment. Change Management influences how an employee feels at work, their relationship with their co-workers, their physical and hierarchical place within the organization, their physical surroundings and the tools they utilize to get their job done. It’s the ‘people-side’ of change that ensures the project is successful as it empowers employees to embrace change as well. The benefits of Change Management are numerous and provide a seamless transition to new ways of working in conjunction with minimising resistance. It allows proper initiation and support of the change process, whilst addressing employee’s concerns, fears and anxieties. As this process puts employees concerns of “What’s it in it for me (WIIFM)?” in the forefront, the end result is an increase in productivity and morale.

“CREATIVITY NEEDS TO PROVIDE VALUE AND TO ALWAYS GIVE A HOLISTIC, BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL SOLUTION. ON TOP OF THIS, SW1’S DESIGN METHODOLOGY ALSO PROVIDES A CLEAR PLUG IN FOR THEIR BRANDED ENVIRONMENTS SERVICE.”

THE VALUE OF YOUR BRAND

The office is more than a physical environment. It’s a place in the mind. A brand experience. Applying the values of a company’s brand in the physical space is essential for a complete design solution. To brand the work environment effectively with sophistication, meaning and purpose, a strategy that aligns with the full program of your fit-out project is paramount. Engagement at the early stages of design with brand guardians, marketing teams, architects, interior design consultants, change managers and forwardthinkers is also essential. SW1 believes it’s more than just placing a logo or vision statement in reception. All elements that comprise a place – architecture, interiors,

lighting, furniture, wayfinding, graphics, landscape – should be integrated to create an intuitive brand experience. A strategically branded environment promotes loyalty, trust and motivation; putting companies in the best light and connecting staff and visitors to their products or services. The fact is, space does play a role in brand expression – an unavoidable one. The SW1 team recently worked closely with their Interior Design team and client to create a compelling branded environment for a leading Telco in Malaysia. To move the process forward, a simple set of brand tools was developed to help designers and suppliers identify shape, colour and form more cohesively.

AGILE, FLEXIBLE & BUILT FOR PURPOSE Adaptive workplaces are fully equipped to deal with the everyday ebbs and flows of every individual’s work tasks while providing a future-proof real estate solution for the companies that occupy them. SW1 calls it an “Adaptive Worklife Experience”. This is how they define it in their words: “ADAPTIVE because we design agile, flexible and collaborative spaces which can cater for multiple tasks and headcounts changes that provide a resilient and future-proof real estate solution. WORKLIFE because we cater for the multiple generations of people who have different expectations of the workplace. As we spend so much time at work, our workplace must also enhance our quality of life as needed. EXPERIENCE because it is all about communicating Brand Values, Vision and Mission. Everyone that comes to the workplace must have a visceral experience of this.”

CELCOM 042

An ADAPTIVE WORKLIFE EXPERIENCE is truly ‘social’ having multiple spaces for people to collaborate, socialise, focus and energise. It represents how we will be working in the future. It will be a true enabler for the workforce and technology is one of the keys to achieving this.

Interesting design features throughout the office create “Instagrammable moments that can be shared and experienced by others no matter where they are. SW1 commissioned a talented, local up and coming sculptor to create a visual centrepiece for the HQ lobby, enticing and wowing visitors, generating a memorable first impression for visitors. To enhance the theme, eye-catching details can be found throughout the office space, shaping an identity and brand impression that will be instantly remembered.

WORK LIFE BALANCE “A VARIETY OF SPACES FOR PEOPLE TO COLLABORATE, SOCIALISE, FOCUS AND ENERGISE CREATES A THRIVING WORKPLACE.”

High staff morale is now shifting towards the quality of workplace experiences, which are directly influenced by wellness. As food is an integral part of Asian culture, it is an important aspect in the planning process. Variety is key - whether they are food choices or where you like to eat, people enjoy having options. And of course, after that delicious plate of nasi lemak, employees can choose to burn off those calories in the office gym before heading back to their work tasks. SW1 calls this scenario an Adaptive Worklife Experience.

Pivoting around a central location, everything within the new Celcom headquarters was designed to provide the essential balance between work and lifestyle, offering employees and visitors the experience of harmony, innovation and productivity. In terms of functionality; the operational spaces were crafted to create an efficient and effective workflow, instilling a conducive environment that encourages interaction and collaboration. Throughout the entire design, the art of balance between functionality and aesthetic experience is prevalent, resulting in a truly empowering work environment.

“THE ADAPTIVE WORKLIFE EXPERIENCE CAN BE SEEN WITH THE DIVERSE APPLICATION OF FURNITURE – ENABLING STAFF TO WORK IN A WAY THAT SUITS THEM – WHETHER INDIVIDUALLY OR IN GROUPS.”

Set within the corporate towers of The Pinnacle Sunway in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, the interior spaces of a multinational pharmaceutical company express a distinctive concept that reflect the company’s values and standing in the medical and healthcare industry. Collaborating for the third time in a row, this MNC continues to trust SW1 to deliver quality projects with the purpose to dynamically create an agile and collaborative workflow for their recently renovated Shared Service Centre. The company requested for the office design to facilitate and empower staff – with a mixture of an open floor concept and a cubicle-based workspace. A healthy balance between public, semi-private and private spaces prevails throughout the space. To create a versatile space, SW1 also incorporated rooms that can be easily converted into larger meeting rooms should the need arise.

MULTINATIONAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY 056

Commitment to quality and attention to detail encompasses the interior design of their office. Starting at the reception area, branding is subtle and is all about user experience. Wall features remind guests of the organisation’s role and heritage but instead of a loud portrayal of the brand, SW1 directed the focus to human needs – for instance, warmth and care.

TOP & BOTTOM: Townhall area and meeting pods.

Timber textures and colours can be seen on reception desks as well as the flooring for the waiting area and loose furniture. Seats are ergonomic; bright green and orange ottomans dot the lounge area to make guests feel immediately at home. The natural lighting flooding in through the glazed openings further enhance the human experience throughout this social and collaborative space. The core office spaces are strategically and efficiently planned – with ergonomic and functional office systems installed to increase staff comfort and productivity. The MNC’s values and ethos subtly exude throughout the operational space. The open floor plan for the employee’s workspace encourages transparency and collaboration – cornerstones of the company’s values. The workspace also features coloured highlights which keep the place lively and visually arresting without becoming a source of distraction.

The ‘Adaptive Worklife Experience’ is demonstrated with the diverse application of furniture, enabling employees to work in a way that suits them – whether individually or in groups. The private spaces accommodate the human resource department and key managerial rooms. The entire design further encourages collaboration through the creation of huddle spaces, social corners and the games room. Echoing the company’s investment on human resource, the games room not only provides a space for the staff to relax and blow off steam but also acts as an informal space to brainstorm and share ideas. Throughout this corporate space, it’s apparent SW1 has successfully delivered a future-proof workplace that allows this leading pharmaceutical to be flexible, paving the way for them to grow while providing their employees with an experience that is truly memorable and empowering.

A truly “flexible and social” workplace has different spaces for people to collaborate, socialise, focus and revitalize, representing ABW working in the future. Transitioning in and out of different work settings (ranging from quiet rooms to meeting tables or social areas with soft seating) throughout the day not only helps to motivate ideation and break down social barriers and power distances, but also reduces tension and stress, inducing better work quality by letting people unwind in a safe and comfortable space. Throughout the design process, thinking ahead is vital to protect a client’s real estate investment.

CONSTRUCTION MADE SIMPLE

“KEEPING CLIENTS INFORMED AND IN CONTROL OF THEIR PROJECT.”

SW1’s project, construction and cost management methodology dovetail all activities in a simple and effective manner. It is interwoven through all service offerings and provides a seamless point of contact to transfer knowledge and information on cost, time and quality back and forth between all protagonists. SW1’s methodology has defined procedures for the inception of a project right through to the post-handover activities. Several factors influence time frame in one way or another. It recognises that the key is to obtain a proper acceptance and sign-off of all design by the client and allows activities to be prioritised as necessary to meet the deadlines. Any potential bottlenecks are pre-empted right at the outset. There is a set system of checks and balances which ensure nothing is missed and the client is informed and in control at all stages. Long lead times are identified early in the process and via the cost management model, orders can be locked out and placed in time. All projects have changes to deal with whether they are change in circumstances, requirements or just a change of mind. SW1’s methodology addresses this in a unique and systematic manner. There are standard tools that define and track all changes and ensure that the client is aware of all the deadlines and decisions required. SW1 has an extensive QA/OC process, which is ISO accredited and proven. The commitment to quality is a process and

throughout the project process there are checks, balances and reviews which ensure that quality is optimized for any given situation. SW1’s Safety Department ensures all construction works are undertaken under a proper safety regime. SW1’s Safety Managers are certified and have developed an attitude and demeanour about safety that truly adds value to the industry. Safety Managers operate autonomously and report directly to the Management eliminating any conflicts and allowing them to focus on keeping people safe.

SW1 SOLUTIONS

IT’S NOT JUST A PRETTY PICTURE SW1 sees design as a process and team effort. As many different skills are required, the firm brings together a team of architects, interior, product, graphic and industrial designers to work alongside commercial and project minded people – the essential ingredients for a complete office design solution. SW1 understands functionality well – to them, it’s sometimes not just a pretty picture, it’s a solution to make life easier and functional for the people who will use it.

We are living in a unique time where companies are required to continually offer more complicated, tailored and higher quality solutions to their customers. This means innovation is a key factor – greater emphasis is placed on generating new ways of thinking about the same problem as well as completely out of the box generation of ideas (ideation). The current workforce is also unique in its diversity as well as demographic. The demands of the workplace have never been higher and design needs to support the function in a simple and direct manner. Flexibility is of course the key and thus new approaches and real estate products are becoming popular.

“WE’RE CREATING A NEW TYPE OF WORKPLACE THAT IMPROVES WELLBEING AND INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY. PEOPLE DETERMINE AND INHABIT SPACE WITHOUT BOUNDARIES.”

Co-work is developing into an essential plug in for companies to augment their real estate needs and address multidisciplinary collaboration. This approach dictates that companies look at their own real estate differently and thus a new type of adaptive workplace is coming to prominence. SW1 is working in conjunction with a Global Tech Giant and Global Co-work Service Provider to augment and provide flexibility for their workplace needs. With their unique take on generational demographics, real estate and the workplace SW1 researches and designs education spaces with the understanding that the seeds of the workplace of the future are planted in the schools, colleges and universities of the present. There is a trend emerging which blurs the lines between education and workplace design of which SW1 are at the forefront.

Before construction begins, dealing with the authorities is essential to ensure the proper approvals, permits and certificates are issued. Unfortunately, these submissions take time and can involve multiple stages of submission and inspection prior to issuance of the Certificate of Completion and Compliance. SW1’s methodology identifies all risks and ensures compliance for the client whilst minimizing time frames. The client is always kept informed and in control.

EXECUTION OF STRATEGY One of the biggest problems in most multidisciplinary companies is obtaining design approvals and buy in from the relevant stakeholders. There are many requirements, objectives and opinions that need to be factored into the design. Getting final and lasting agreement with stakeholders is always a potential risk to the timeframe. SW1’s methodology ensures thorough design coordination and presentation via workshops, focus groups as well as online tools to share, disseminate and get proper and clear approvals within the timeframe.

“THERE ARE MANY REQUIREMENTS, OBJECTIVES AND OPINIONS THAT NEED TO BE FACTORED INTO THE DESIGN.”

ARUP 082

HASSELL and Arup have a long history as project partners, collaborating on more than 300 projects dating back to the 1980s with a combined build value in excess of $90b. Having collaborated on Arup’s workplace transformation in Australasia, they are now embarking on this new journey together to transform their new workplace in KL, taking forward their learnings, insights and evidence from their workplace journeys in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore. This transformation journey began in 2013 with the development of workplace guidelines to outline the new workplace experience for Arup in Australasia. The guidelines aim to provide a framework which establishes a consistent baseline for workplace projects across the region while seeking to amplify the Arup culture and form a solid understanding of the personality of the office and its location. While it is not a prescriptive document, one of the key drivers is about bringing in community, engagement and innovation, understanding that Activity Based Working (ABW) needs diverse settings that make sense for the culture and business.

“ACTIVITY BASED WORKING (ABW) NEEDS DIVERSE SETTINGS THAT MAKE SENSE FOR THE CULTURE AND BUSINESS.”

ARUP

To support Arup in Kuala Lumpur, SW1 was appointed as a key design partner along with HASSELL, resulting in a fruitful partnership to ensure Arup’s work culture and operations remain relevant and authentic to the KL context. As an integrated team, SW1 started with strategic lens – working with a workplace strategy process of staff engagement and using data to co-create an evidence-based design for the company. Through active listening, learning and collaborating as well as challenging the status quo, SW1 produced a distinguished creative outcome throughout the process. Emphasis was placed on integrating the strong learning culture of Arup into their new KL workplace to encourage more collaboration and choices of where to work both individually and together. More than just bringing in the Arup University as part of this new space, SW1 also delivered the project through an integrated BIM approach, combining design and engineering into a cohesive whole.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?

Despite all the talk about AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning, when it comes to anticipating the future of the workplace, it is still very much “the primate” that creates and innovates. Indeed, with AI and machine learning still emerging as usable technologies, we can expect offices to be run by humans for the foreseeable future. What changes is the companies’ expectation of their workforce and the workforce’s expectations of their companies. If day-to-day tasks are handled by machines then this places an emphasis on ideas, creativity and thinking. The question for the immediate future is how can designers create workforce environments that stimulate and encourage this. What society understands right now is we are all still ‘human’ and we function and operate so much better with natural light, healthy diets, natural surroundings and peace-of-mind. Companies embracing nature, offering childcare, somewhere to keep fit, a variety of food choices and technology to make their working day more focused and efficient are considered as workspaces of the future.

A DIGITAL WORKPLACE Adopting a digital workplace helps companies become more efficient by streamlining operations and helping teams operate at peak capacity. SW1 breaks down digital workplaces into three main categories focusing on operations, space and collaboration. Digital Operation makes simple day-to-day tasks like gaining access to your office, booking meeting rooms, ordering lunch, locating fellow employees, even your car etc. This makes collaboration and workflows much more efficient. Biometrics (eg. facial recognition), cloud-based services and technology are changing the landscape in this area. Digital Space focuses on using digital methods to enhance the space, deliver brand messages, corporate communications and build knowledge and sharing. This aligns with company values and training as well

as keeps employees informed and focused. Spaces are made more interesting and interactive with touch screens, digital art and interactive content which can blend seamlessly with the interior design. Digital Collaboration is a more traditional use of digital technology and if deployed properly will enhance collaboration and idea sharing via presentation, displaying of ideas or data and video conferencing. SW1 looks at all three aspects to see how best a company can leverage from technology as a whole. Integration is the key and SW1 works closely with international consultants, content creators as well as creates its own content to deploy and integrate technology into their design solutions.

SW1 prides itself on being a people organisation. Every aspect of what they do has a human-centric motivation at its heart. Any new project means change, and any change is an emotional journey. When approaching any project, it is important to understand that a workplace is made up of human beings who can be complex, emotional and are subject to whims, fancies and moods. SW1 understands the roadmap towards change and recognizes that human beings swing pendulously from one state of emotion to another. The idea is to make these swings smaller and smaller until we reach equilibrium. At that point we have reached the goal of any project. SW1 are a bunch of creative, passionate, hardworking individuals that don’t rely on robots or apps to do their business. Initiative, experience and knowledge gained from working with local and global companies deliver compelling environments for people.

S

treamlined yet sleek, the Barra Work table conveys a floating appearance that emerges from pure construction logic. Designed by Swiss designers Nathan + Ismaël Studer from Atelier I+N, Barra Work features exceptional modular features that fit perfectly into modern workspaces. “Our goal was to design a table with an archaic, archetypal shape. Its purpose and meaning should be immediately recognizable. It is an essential and significant object at home and in the office; it is architecture in small format,” says Nathan Studer as his brother Ismaël adds, “And yet it is radically minimalist.” Two solid wood beams and a pair of angled legs at the opposite ends support the tabletop, offering excellent stability and visual balance. When a longer table is called for, a two-piece tabletop complemented by a third pair of legs enables Barra Work to be extended to a length of 480 cm. The width can be between 110 and 130 cm, depending on the length. For higher functionality, the area between the two beams is designed to provide storage space for media elements and cables. Users also have the option to incorporate a data box with cover in wood to match tabletop or a customized data box cut-out to maintain the minimalist outlook of the table. Featuring a natural palette of colours, the legs are powder-coated in a choice of black or silver while the solid wood table is available in Oak or American walnut. The ideal table for conference rooms, Barra Work works well as a universal desk or team workplace. GIRSBERGER.COM

AT ESP OFFICE CHAIR WILKHAHN

HIGH POWER

WILKHAHN’S AT CHAIR IS NOW INNOVATED WITH ESP CAPABILITIES, MAKING IT THE PERFECT PARTNER FOR HEIGHT-ADJUSTABLE DESKS TO IMPROVE SITTING-STANDING POSTURES.

THIS PICTURE: The AT ESP chair, third in Wilkhahn’s free-to-move range, comes with ESP or the elevated sitting position.

WILKHAHN AT ESP OFFICE CHAIR 104 THIS PICTURE: Ideal for sitting or standing at a desk, or just perching on, the AT ESP chair features innovative functions to ease the transition between standing and sitting.

I

t’s one thing to invest in height-adjustable desks, but quite another when it comes to people actually using it. While the intention behind these desks are good, when people find it too tedious to get up and adjust the table, it defies their real purpose. Wilkhahn has come up with a superb solution for this: sit higher so that standing up becomes easier, reducing the need to reset the table again and again. Here’s where the AT chair, third in their free-to-move range which comes with ESP or the Elevated Sitting Position truly makes a difference. Whether you want a standard chair with full 3D movement capabilities or seats that are height-adjustable, AT literally has your back. Not only can you adjust up to a height of 62 cm, this chair also features a patented forward seat tilt, which upon activating it, AT turns into a dynamic office chair that allows users to perch on the edge of the seat while leaning back on the backrest. If users want to alternate between standing and sitting for short periods of time throughout the day, AT makes the transition much easier. “As a result, the extra investment in height-adjustable desks truly pays dividends,” Wilkhahn says. AT comes with the option of automatic weight adjustment or rapid counter pressure adjustment. Accessories are also available for different scenarios: from the adjustable lumbar support (standard) to 1D, 3D and 4D armrests, optionally with hard or soft armrest pads all the way to seat-depth extension that can be conveniently altered by turning a knob. ATLAS OFFICE LANDSCAPE BRINGS TOGETHER HEIGHT-ADJUSTABILITY AND COLLABORATIVE WORKING. DESKS CAN BE CONFIGURED TO MAKE SPACE RATHER THAN LOSE IT. W

ith emphasis on human-centred design and ergonomic excellence, the Atlas Office Landscape ingeniously combines heightadjustability and collaborative work systems into one elegant desking solution. Designed by Tim Wallace, this system features a unique “no beam” structure, resulting in a clean and versatile space that supports collaboration, focused activity or impromptu meetings. “Reflecting Herman Miller’s long history and expertise in pioneering innovative work systems, Atlas Office Landscape differs from a standard sit-to-stand desking system,” says Tim. “Ultimately, flexibility is its greatest strength. Atlas isn’t constrained by structures traditionally seen in height-adjustable furniture, such as a horizontal beam. This means that rectilinear, 90-degree and z-plan layouts are all easily achievable,” says Tim. Central to its design is its height-adjustable desking system which revolutionizes the standard sit-to-stand workstation. Componentry and electrical elements have been simplified and kept in a uniform manner, making large groups of height-adjustable desks easier to configure as a single workstation. To complement these desks, storage and meeting tables as well as shared cable management can be integrated for higher flexibility and better use of space. Appearance-wise, the Atlas Office Landscape takes on a smooth and organic form featuring soft curved edges to create a seamless, cohesive effect. Diverting from conventional desk design which often produces a regimented look, Atlas’ rounded aesthetic is crafted to reflect an elegant piece of furniture that flows effortlessly throughout the office space. With the addition of work surfaces, screens, power supply and storage units, these desks become more functional and substantial, appealing to our human nature. HERMANMILLER.COM

I

t’s pure poetry how leading carpet manufacturer Carpets Inter celebrates the beauty of our water world. However, it’s more than waxing lyrical because the brand has turned their green dream into reality, actualized in the form of their highly imaginative carpet tile collection aptly named Upstream, using the revolutionary carpet tile cushion backing EcoSoft® made entirely from upcycled PET plastic bottles. Among the plastic debris responsible for the deaths of millions of marine animals each year, plastic bottles pose a particular threat, as nearly a million are bought or sold around the world every minute, however less than 6.5% are ever recycled. The eye-catching Upstream collection comprises two distinct designs, each of which is available in five colorways. The designs are appropriately named EBB and FLOW, evoking The Ocean Cleanup’s ongoing mission of using deep sea currents to rid the world’s oceans of nearly 9 million tons of plastic accumulation each year. The Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 as the brainchild of Dutch inventor and prodigy Boyan Slat. His breakthrough proposal utilizes passive collection methods that harness the natural flow of earth’s water masses to gather and recycle plastics in oceans around the world. Chief among its goals is a plan to eliminate at least half the Great Pacific Garbage Patch within the next five years. Proceeds from the sales of Carpets Inter EcoSoft® backed carpet tile will be donated in support of The Ocean Cleanup organization. As a leader in the commercial modular carpet tile industry, Carpets Inter has a history of creating sustainable ‘fit for purpose’ collections for more than 15 years. In support of their latest sustainability campaign, Upstream with Ecosoft® backing modular system offers the facility a wide range of benefits including ease of installation, under floor maintenance with minimal disruption, superior underfoot comfort and acoustical propensity, as well as excellent indoor air quality. s a progressive world-leading cloud data management company, Informatica is fully committed to taking ambitious action to reduce its carbon emissions. For suppliers hoping to work with Informatica, this means their procurement process only selects the most environmentally friendly manufacturers. That’s why we are so proud that Informatica has chosen to work with Interface again and again. In India alone, we have completed four separate projects for Informatica over the last three years, including their newly constructed offices in Bangalore. Here, sustainability isn’t just ticking boxes on a list of product specs; it’s intrinsic to the operation. Informatica offers incentives to employees who reduce their carbon footprint and encourages the use of public transport or car pools. Their offices are “binless”, which reduces overall waste, and they only allow companies with proper recycling capabilities to handle their office waste. For Informatica, it’s a big plus point that all Interface products are carbon

neutral at no extra cost to the customer – an industry first. For their new office in the east of Bangalore at Bagmane Tech Park, Informatica wanted to create a modern and flexible workspace where their most important company value “act as one team” could thrive. The final design includes a range of collaborative areas that provide space for formal meetings and informal discussions. To boost employee well-being, Informatica invested in advanced ergonomic chairs and height-adjustable tables that allow employees to sit or stand, and installed self-watering “green walls” with air filtering plants. The green credentials of their new office were further enhanced by choosing to install Interface Carbon Neutral Floors. This allowed Informatica to offset 19 tonnes of carbon emissions – that’s the same emissions as a car travelling roughly 74,000 km or twice around the circumference of the earth. Carbon Neutral Floors come as standard on all our

products globally, which is only possible because we’ve been leading the way on reducing carbon emissions for more than two decades. We’ve moved beyond reducing the carbon produced by manufacturing alone; we now minimise emissions across the entire product lifecycle, from raw material extraction down to installation, removal and end of life stewardship. We’ve reduced the carbon footprint of our products by over 60% – the lowest levels in the industry based on publicly available data. Product carbon neutrality is then achieved by offsetting the remaining carbon emissions with investment in verified emission reduction projects all over the world. It’s no secret that we look forward to working with Informatica, because they always choose our latest, most advanced products in their signature vibrant colours. Repeat business from climate-conscious clients like Informatica is also confirmation that our quest for reversing global warming and our behind the scenes work perfecting recycling processes are truly appreciated. For their new offices in Bangalore, Informatica again embraced one of our latest product ranges: Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT). A range of hard floor coverings that mimic traditional wood, stone and metallic flooring, designed to integrate seamlessly with our modular carpet tile system without transition strips. LVT tiles are the exact same size and depth, so they can be used to create unique patterns, irregular transitions, or as with this project, seamless joins between hardwearing, durable pathways and softer workspaces and meeting areas. Additionally, all our LVT designs come with our superior Sound Choice™ backing, so even hard floors can minimise noise and amplify concentration and focus. As senior director of real estate & workplace solutions at Informatica, it’s Suresh Rao’s job to keep current employees happy and create a work culture that helps to attract the best talent. His biggest challenge in recent years has been “dealing with the change from traditional offices to a collaborative open-plan office culture”. For Suresh, “space that helps foster collaboration between cross-functional teams is incredibly important.” It’s in these collaborative areas where we can see the seamless integration of hard LVT flooring and soft modular carpet tiles. The joins are created without the use of transition strips, so there is no interruption in the surface when moving from one area to another. The soft carpeted areas help to encourage spontaneous group huddles and form the boundary of the collaborative space, while the hard wood grain LVT tiles installed in pathways and connecting corridors add warmth and sophistication without the problems associated with real wooden floors. If an area becomes worn or damaged, it’s easy to just lift up the tiles and replace them. Suresh and his team chose the Net Effect™ collection as the floor covering for the main work areas. “Nature and the ocean were the inspiration for our office design,” he explained. “We wanted a lively, collaborative space; a

free-FLOWing organic carpet design like Net Effect was a perfect choice.” Net Effect is a unique range of carpet tiles that is both inspired by the ocean and helps to remove plastic waste from precious coastline habitats. The collection includes a sequence of patterned tiles that echo the movement of waves breaking against the shore. Net Effect is constructed using ECONYL® yarn, which is made entirely from recycled materials. This includes discarded fishing nets reclaimed through Net-Works™, an innovative business model established with the Zoological Society of London in 2012. Net-Works empowers people of coastal communities in the Philippines, Cameroon and Indonesia to collect and sell discarded nylon fishing nets, which removes them from the ocean where they harm marine life. So far, 224,000 kilograms of nets have been collected through Net-Works, which has allowed us to provide more than 2,200 families with access to financial support and helped to create a cleaner, healthier marine environment for over 64,000 villagers. Informatica’s vibrant blue and orange brand colours always take centre stage in their office interiors – another reason why they keep coming back to Interface. Suresh was clear on the importance of colour: “The materials selected had to complement our brand colours and logo,”

not just for the floor coverings, but also for the acoustic wall panels used extensively to dampen sound in meeting rooms and collaborative spaces. Interface products come in a vast range of textures and colours, and if a specific brand colour is required we also offer a custom colour service. Suresh was also keen to point out that Interface account manager Vinay Kumar was a big factor in their decision to work with Interface again. Working with a partner who is fully committed to timelines was very important to Suresh and his team: “Interface is well known for their ability to execute projects within agreed timelines. Even so, Vinay ensured that we didn’t have to worry about delivery or execution. This meant we could fully focus on the other priorities for this project.” As always, our product design team is hard at work developing new floor coverings that push the boundaries of innovation, design and utility – and help our customers take concrete steps to help to reverse global warming. We hope to see them featured in Informatica’s next climate-focused office interior. INTERFACE.COM

ODE TO ART 146

SPOTLIGHT

CLOSE TO SCULPTURES BY XIE AI GE

X

ie Ai Ge is a Chinese sculptor who is continually gaining acclaim in the international art world for her works made in bronze and synthetic materials. Her genius was recognised by art critics during a national exhibition in China in 2005 as a “promising young sculptor”. Xie’s work shows the limitlessness of her technical virtuosity, productivity and artistic imagination. Although linked together by her signature minimalistic style, she has created many different series that explore different subjects, symbols and facets of cultures. Xie’s Tai Chi series, for example, demonstrate poses of the Chinese martial art “Tai Chi”. Her minimalistic approach in portraying its movements emphasise the calm and grace that the peaceful martial art adopted for self-defence champions. One of the key concepts within “Tai Chi” is balance, such that each movement is meant to be carried out slowly with high levels of relaxation and intense concentration. The steadiness of Xie’s figures perfectly emphasise this balance, sculpted with somber, focused expressions and steadfast postures. Her more recent Tree Top Memories series, however, explores themes that are entirely different in concept yet similar in tone, reminiscing on the connection between nature and man. There is an analogous feeling of peace, as her sculptures depict man returning to his roots in nature, but there is an added sense of play, interacting and exploring different parts of nature. They symbolise the purity of her vision of life, uncorrupted by her living in the fast-paced, modern Shanghai. As a whole, Xie Ai Ge’s sculptures represent the values she respects and holds dear, a model of her own character. The wonderful and innovative work Xie Ai Ge creates exemplify that she is not just a leading young sculptor of her generation in China, but rather a significantly successful Chinese artist on an international level.
