CELEBRATING STYLE AND SUBTANCE Time flies when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe that we are almost three quarters into the year. It’s been a fruitful time, however, particularly with the exceptional design firms and projects that we’ve had the pleasure to meet and feature so far in 2018.

F

rom the publication of our first issue over a decade ago, we swore we’d do our absolute best to bring you, our readers, the finest office design projects from across the region. So far, we’ve kept our word, if recent feedback is of any indication! I must say we’ve had our work cut out for us though, what with the number of exciting new practices that have, in recent years, raised the bar for design throughout Asia and beyond. The industry has expanded most impressively, and we are proud to have been a part of it, charting its growth for as long as we have. In this issue, we are also proud to bring you stellar projects by The DB&B Group. Headquartered in Asia, this formidable firm has been offering a refreshed perspective on commercial interior design since its inception. Proffering holistic solutions that lend themselves to work environments fostering happiness and wellbeing, DB&B designers make it their business to embrace an approach that is ‘more than design’. In our humble opinion, there’s nothing more inspiring than that. On the product design front, we’re delighted to have been invited to attend the Orgatec exhibition in Cologne later this year. Needless to say, there’s a fair bit of page space devoted to the innovative pieces being showcased, so look out for them in this issue and the next. Happy reading and until next time…

If you’re looking for a sure-fire way to perk up your home or office, the KLIA chair by Kastel might be just the ticket. WE HAVE BEEN ADOPTING NEW DESIGN LANGUAGES THAT SUIT THE NEW CORPORATE WORLD. WITH 21ST CENTURY OFFICES ADAPTING AND CHANGING LARGELY DUE TO DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY, AN OFFICE TODAY IS MORE THAN A WORKING PLACE, WHERE THE WAY WE WORK AND MEET HAS CERTAINLY TRANSFORMED.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR JOB AS KETTAL’S CEO AND VICE PRESIDENT? AND THE MOST REWARDING? A: Managing people and their emotions is always the hardest thing to do. We are all different and have different motivations. Thankfully, the most rewarding part is to see how we are increasingly becoming a unique team, even as markets today are increasingly dynamic, changing and challenging. We encounter not a few new challenges that will require a team that is able to understand what we stand for and to work very closely together as one unit. We also need to be extremely customer-driven, listening and adapting as everything is produced in Europe, so timing is crucial for us.

Q: CAN YOU DESCRIBE KETTAL’S CORE VALUES? A: Teamwork, design, innovation and investment. These four core values are embedded in our brand and are avidly promoted by the second generation leadership. Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS KETTAL APART FROM OTHER OUTDOOR FURNITURE COMPANIES? A: Kettal’s aim is to create timeless, functional, and expressive furniture that can be handed down from generation to generation. We like innovating and seeking out new materials and forms of production. Our furniture is suitable for outdoor spaces, as well as interiors and work spaces. Q: YOU MENTIONED KETTAL PRODUCTS BEING SUITED FOR THE OFFICE ENVIRONMENT. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON THIS? A: We have been adopting new design languages that suit the new corporate world. With 21st century offices adapting and changing largely due to digital technology, an office today is more than a working place, where the way we work and meet has certainly transformed. It is in light of this development that we need to create suitable solutions.

IN THIS NEW MARKET, WE ARE CONSTANTLY LEARNING FROM OUR CUSTOMERS. FOR EXAMPLE, WE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PROJECT AT FORA IN LONDON WHERE WE DEVELOPED OFFICE SOLUTIONS WITH CARD KEYS, ETC. WE ALSO COMPLETED ANOTHER PROJECT INVOLVING NEW MEETING ROOMS IN PERTH FOR WESTPAC BANK. THESE INSTALLATIONS TRULY REFLECT THE NEW WAY OF WORKING, WHERE MEETINGS ARE FASTER, SHORTER, AND LESS FORMAL.

At the same time we have been working and investing in our materials. We are developing materials that suit the corporate environment from the certification point of view, such as cleaning, rubbing and fire-retardant requirements. Q: TELL US ABOUT KETTAL’S MOST SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS INVOLVING WORKPLACE INSTALLATIONS. A: In this new market, we are constantly learning from our customers. For example, we successfully completed a project at Fora in London where we developed office solutions with card keys, etc. We also completed another project involving new meeting rooms in Perth for WestPac Bank. These installations truly reflect the new way of working, where meetings are faster, shorter, and less formal. Q: KETTAL HAS COLLABORATED WITH INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED DESIGNERS SUCH AS PATRICIA URQUIOLA AND JASPER MORRISON, AMONG OTHERS. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE WHO YOU WORK WITH? A: Our first designer item was the Oscar chair, created by Oscar Tusquets. In 2006, we made a huge stride with Patricia Urquiola’s Maia collection. She reinvented furniture with this collection, producing a new interwoven design that brims with energy, character and a three-dimensional feel. After Patricia, came prestigious designers like Jasper Morrison, Hella Jongerius, Rodolfo Dordoni, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Doshi Levien. We met Nipa Doshi and realized that she could help with our own identity. That was how we started our terrain fabrics and aluminium palette. Later came the bela ropes and parallel sling, all designed by Doshi Levien. We try to design and control every single detail of the process, for example, providing our customers

with the best materials, which are 100% UV, fire-retardant, and easy to maintain, among others. We brief our designers, and they produce a design and manufacture it in line with state-of-the-art knowledge and technology. It’s vital for the designers to share the company’s values and for their style to adhere to the brief for the new collection. Q: CAN YOU DISCUSS WHAT NEW DESIGN CHALLENGES KETTAL’S DESIGNERS ARE TACKLING TODAY? A: We have just resolved the issue of making polypropylene bela ropes and parallel sling fire-retardant, which is a mandatory requirement for this market. Now we are working on creating furniture products for new meeting areas, which will be showcased at ORGATEC 2018. Q: WHAT DOES THE ASIA-PACIFIC MARKET MEAN TO YOU? A: Asia-Pacific is a consolidated market but is at the same time a market that is evolving and embracing changes very quickly. As there are numerous good studios working on new office projects there, it is certainly one of the most dynamic markets. Q: HOW DOES KETTAL FURNITURE APPEAL TO DIFFERENT GENERATIONS? A: I believe our designs are fresh yet boast a certain sophistication that, depending on the colours and materials, is well-suited for both startups and traditional businesses like banks. Q: WHAT DO YOU WANT KETTAL TO ACCOMPLISH IN 2018? A: To keep working on the things we like with an unfettered clarity. This would be enough for us.

Q: WHAT WAS THE DESIGN INSPIRATION BEHIND THE NETBOX LEAF? A: We were looking to deviate from the typically straight-lined and right-angled NETBOX units and taking the cue from nature seems like the ideal approach. Q: WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES YOU ENCOUNTERED THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN PROCESS, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? A: For starters, there was the challenge of bringing together the separate components of the NETBOX Leaf to achieve a cohesive organic design, where each part of the design relates to the whole. Then there was the need to achieve a design that doesn’t appear obtrusive and bigger than is really necessary. This was accomplished by employing a pair of lines which begins from an end point and fans out toward the facia and eventually converging at a point directly opposite from where it originates, hence endowing the NETBOX Leaf with an expressive and tri-dimensional aspect. The finished product resembles leaves which snugly enfold the internal parts to form a unified whole. Q: WHY DO YOU THINK THAT PRODUCT DESIGN IS IMPORTANT AND INFLUENTIAL? A: Product design isn’t simply about aesthetics. In fact, it can also be a reflection of a company’s corporate culture and philosophy. For me, good product design should demonstrate quality in every detail, including the

hidden elements, such as a commitment toward caring for the environment through the responsible use of resources. By all accounts, new materials, new technologies and new findings must always be taken into consideration when designing new products as product design may also be seen as expressing current trends or appealing to a specific taste. Q: WHAT DO YOU TURN TO WHEN YOU ARE IN NEED OF INSPIRATION? A: Inspiration is all around us. It doesn’t matter if it’s created by people or by nature itself. You just have to keep your eyes open to the plethora of opportunities that lay in wait, right in front of us to craft unique products that reveal their inspiration while retaining the designer’s distinct vision. Q: HOW DO YOU STAY AHEAD OF CURRENT DESIGN TRENDS? A: I have always been driven by a genuine quest to create the most appealing and technically-driven solutions to address specific design challenges. Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR DESIGN AESTHETIC IN JUST ONE SENTENCE? A: A clean, minimalist aesthetic that reflects the interplay between the interior of the product and its exterior.

Co-working operator, Distrii, seeks to reinvent global workspaces and create collaborative environments by converging internet technology with commercial real estate to form the Internet of Things, thus providing benefits of online collaboration tools and offline premium spaces for the future ready office.

oining forces with real estate developer City Developments (CDL), China-based Distrii successfully unveiled the single largest and tech-driven co-working facility in May 2018, located

at Republic Plaza, Raffles Place, Singapore. Occupying more than 62,000 square feet across six floors, the facility provides amenities including more than 900 work stations, private work spaces and customizable team spaces, a 200 -pax capacity multi-purpose hall and a food & beverage outlet. DB&B had the privilege to have been selected to work with Distrii to design the bespoke space. As this is Distrii’s first foray out of their base in China, the facility had to undergo thorough design thinking process right from the onset. One of the key objectives of this project was to effectively integrate Distrii’s proprietary enterprise collaboration and productivity tools to the space. This included a mobile application that is backed by a cloud-based system and Internet of Things (IoT) Technology, focusing on office tools and social circles. The application provides access and booking of meeting rooms, as well as supporting video conferencing and internal administration management.

For a start, the design team had to familiarize with the fundamental needs required to set-up a co-working space. Diversifying from the usual office set-up, Distrii aims to operate in a more organic fashion by having both private and social spaces. With the intention to accommodate different work needs and styles, there is a balanced provision of private and customised spaces as well as flexible, hot-desking work settings. Private office spaces, complete with its own bespoke managerial rooms and exclusive meeting room installed with Distrii’s proprietary video & voice conferencing tool, are suited to start-ups and small businesses. To maximize privacy, these rooms are situated at the back-of-house, equipped with advanced room booking systems. The design team had to rely on their rich experiences in designing global work spaces to value add to this new concept, for example, strategic space planning to maximize real estate efficiency.

WARM HOSPITALITY The overaching design concept for the Distrii space involves considerable use of the wood-inspired material, one that is commonly opted to elevate the hospitality look and feel. This material is also commonly applied to high traffic spaces as it is more durable and offers ease of maintenance. Multinational food products corporation, Danone, was seeking a commercial interiors specialist with the right expertise and experience to deliver its new Asia headquarters in Singapore. This workplace had to be ‘agile’ to cater to its regional and local employees and at the same time, reflecting Danone’s mission to build a healthier future.

AGILE WORK SETTINGS OFFER FLEXIBILITY AND ENCOURAGE COLLABORATION The space planning guidelines that was set by the Paris steering committee provided the design team a framework to work with; further studies such as surveys, interviews and workshops were conducted to discern the needs of the users for better understanding. Findings revealed an agile work setting will appeal to both the regional and local employees, providing the flexibility and support they needed. Planned autonomous ‘neighbourhoods’ are effectively zoned to meet work (with amenities), collaboration and storage needs. The mixture of workstations and high desks (hot-desking) are availed for different work styles, with close proximity to huddle spaces and phone booths for more focused tasks. Majority of the seats are unassigned and users are free to choose according to the nature of the task at hand. Manager rooms are easily adaptable and can double up as meeting rooms when unoccupied. Plenty of collaboration areas and other amenities are available to support the teaming culture at Danone. For example, the multi-purpose training room is configurable to suit various event needs and when combined with the spacious pantry, it becomes a large townhall that is able to accommodate up to 200 people. Facilitating social interactions and creative discussions, the collaboration areas are designed to be more relaxed and informal with vibrant, expressive colours.

Starting from the impressive greenwall at the reception and surrounding greenery that’s peppered across the entire space, employees are also equipped with environmentally-friendly amenities to uphold the company’s mission of building a healthier future. Sustainable innovations like the charge-as-youride, self-powered cycling devices that can generate power to charge mobile phones motivates users to choose an active lifestyle to be fit and healthy. The office was also granted the BCA Green Mark Platinum certification. A clear representation of an Asia headquarters, the workplace embraces the region’s eclectic cultures by incorporating unique themes for each zone. The different zones for the back-of-house are demarcated using special cultural motifs to represent Asia Pacific countries that Danone has presence in. The design team and the Client hand-picked each furniture and display accessories in each space. Encapsulating ‘homeliness’, the final design is unified by bringing a sense of belonging at the Singapore-themed pantry , a home for Danone Asia Pacific headquarters. The DB&B design team said, “This is a very memorable project for us, it’s one space that’s packed with uniqueness and personality. Grosvenor Asia Pacific is a developer and investor in property and has been present in the Asia Pacific region for more than 20 years. Grosvenor Group (‘Grosvenor’) engaged DB&B to design their new 2,600 square feet office located in HKRI Taikoo Hui, Jing’an District. The final design became the first office in Asia Pacific to be awarded WELL Building Standard™ (WELL™) Certification at Gold Level for New & Existing Interiors by the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™).

he WELL Building Standard is an evidence and performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features that impact human health and wellness in buildings through air, water,

Guided by these seven categories, DB&B identified the critical design elements necessary to apply and deliver an office centred on the health and wellbeing of its staff. Designed to be future-ready, these collaboration areas are easily configurable to accommodate increased numbers of work stations as the team grows. The Linde Group (‘Linde’) is a world leading industrial gases and engineering company with a presence in almost 100 countries. For its new workspace at its Asia Pacific headquarters in Singapore, they aspired to transform their current set-up to an open office setting as they move into a more collaborative environment.

ollaboration is the key word these days. As companies take the vital steps into a new work culture, the planning and design of the office is critical in setting the right foundation.

TRANSITING INTO OPEN OFFICE As part of Linde’s relocation into a brand new space, DB&B also looked into the planning strategies to support the company’s quest to move into a more agile setting. The design team consulted with the Linde steering committee to ascertain the project goals right from the onset and strategies were put in place to ensure this assignment is delivered successfully. Apart from striking a balance in meeting user needs, the design strategy also must allow for optimum flexibility. One key implementation was the training room, which can be combined with the pantry to form a large town hall that accommodates up to 400 people.

ACHIEVING THE RIGHT DESIGN HARMONY Being in the specialty gas industry, the theme of the office had to reference their global workplace guidelines. In line with the client’s corporate stature, the front-of-house exudes timeless elegance and sophisticated simplicity. The design aims to portray the company’s branding clearly at the reception with a prominent contrast of the logo against a neutral background. A seemingly more exuberant colour palette is introduced in the back-of-house spaces from dynamic colours to the country-themed graphics application at the pockets of collaboration spaces. The two themes embody a combination of liveliness and functionality, striking evenness between refined and spirited in the office. The design team also took great effort in ensuring Linde employees are treated with the best window views of the Singapore city scape. Countrythemed collaboration are lined along these parameters to enable employees to take in the breath-taking views and interact at the same time.

They opted to work with DB&B to establish a new office that’ll seal their growing presence in the country as well as providing for potential growth in the near future. This new office had to express their brand aspirations and underline the company’s vision.

BRANDING THE OFFICE Being a recent start-up, it is extremely crucial to seal the brand standing. To support the Client’s vision and mission, the design follows the brand personality closely. Using the company’s youthful orange as the anchor colour, the design concept easily infuses the new office with an energetic and compelling spirit. The design elements and details such as the carpet pattern choice, representing a road, and the ceiling design of wheels, juxtapose the Client’s nature of business. The final design aims to support the Client in having a head start to mark their presence in Thailand.

For the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) flagship branch, they were looking for an interior design consultant to express the brand’s aspirations of being a leading bank in Southeast Asia. This flagship branch houses both the workspace for its Head Office employees as well as providing full banking services to its customers.

ong since its establishment, BPI has a sprawling network of over 800 branches regionally. Offering a wide range of diverse financial

products and services, DB&B had to consider the requirements of each user groups carefully to craft a well-tailored solution to fit the 8,600 square feet multi-purpose space.

FOR THE CUSTOMER As the trusted provider of financial services, the customer service space aims to provide a secured and comfortable environment to their clients. For such a compact space, planning plays a very essential part of the process to ensure proper crowd and traffic management. The lift lobby has semi-private ATM machines for fast transactions, segregated by translucent glass panels. This arrangement aids in providing seamless and efficient self-service options. While the lift lobby serves fast transactions, there are also specially-designed high counters where multiple private transactions can take place simultaneously without disruptions. The two zones are designed to co-share a common holding area. For client meetings, exclusive meeting rooms are available with restricted view to offer privacy where needed.

EMBODYING THE RICH HERITAGE Unlike other BPI branches, this flagship branch takes on a more unique disposition. DB&B proposed a new look to provide the space with a bespoke personality. Using the brand’s bold and exuberant red colour and the introduction of the colour white and stainless steel, the combination emboldened BPI in its quest to being the Philippines’ premier bank. The fluidity of the ceiling formation illustrates the bodies of water surrounding the Philippine islands. Different dynamics and depth of the pattern brings different experiences for both the employees and customers. To accentuate the design concept of heritage, the design team injected finer details into the space. For example, the seating area, counter and meeting room represent the three main islands of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Befitting its rich heritage, the image of the galleon is prominently illustrated on the wall. DB&B believes that the combination of all these elements create a space that will nurture integrity, professionalism and loyalty, promoting BPI’s culture of respect, performance and teamwork.

Three elements make up the Paro, united through just two weldings: two metal tubular frames, one serving as a structural support and the other as armrests and the third, a wooden shell. irsberger has indeed come a long way. Founded in 1889 as a woodturner’s workshop, the Swiss furniture manufacturer continues to maintain an unwavering focus on creating high-quality wares with particular expertise in processing wood. Providing premium furniture solutions for varied environments, including offices, public spaces and homes, Girsberger also supplies furniture manufacturers and carpentry businesses with top-quality wood via its wood trade unit. And the emphasis on heritage doesn’t just end with the company’s trade material of choice: Girsberger happens to be managed by the great-grandson of the original company founder, further underscoring its illustrious legacy. Reintroduced into the market earlier this year at the International Interiors Show in Cologne, the Workshop stool is clearly indicative of Girsberger’s ongoing approach with respect to fusing traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Crafted in 1910, the stool is a landmark design that maintains a particularly relevant place in the company’s history. A patent for the stool’s height adjustment mechanism, dated the same year in which the piece was created, further confirms its significance as the first ‘key stepping stone’ for Girsberger. The successful design enabled the company to move beyond its initial existence as a woodturner’s workshop, reestablishing Girsberger as a reputable chair specialist and furniture manufacturer. But although its remarkable narrative continues to inform its overall design sensibility, Girsberger’s Head of Design and Marketing, Matthias Seiler, says that it’s not the only reason for reissuing the historic stool model. “It’s also clearly evident that Workshop stools are back in vogue,” Seiler observes. Stunningly fashioned in natural oak or stained walnut, Girsberger’s design certainly makes a good case for embracing the past. Available in a conventional format as ‘Modell 111’ or the slightly higher ‘Modell 112’, sticklers for comfort can also opt for new upholstered seat, clad in a fabric of one’s choice from Girsberger’s collection. n yet another attempt to inject a little more fun into the workplace and make it a place where employees can be more collaborative, Oasis Furniture is testing the frontier between design and art by creating exclusive design pieces that pay tribute to nature. A modular sofa concept, the versatile collection enables a variety of combinations and configurations, consisting of single- and two-seater sofas, and coffee tables that integrate easily with the overall aesthetics as well as poufs and cushions to crank up the cosy factor, creating an impression that is both inviting and endearing, characteristics that are key in an agile workplace centred on collaboration, innovation, and creativity. Aptly monikered the Ramma or “butterfly” in Malay, the modular pieces evoke the idea of a natural metamorphosis. As if peering through a car window during a monsoon-lashed afternoon, the number of pedestrians gradually dwindled. Like many Southeast Asian cities, the streets of Yangon are chaotic and energetic. In downtown Yangon, we also encountered the vibrant Burmese street life that included mobile street vendors, roadside eateries, and wandering Buddhist monks wore pink robes seeking donations. Soe’s own search experiments in the composition of the characters gave rise to working out his identity and style. Eager to keep up with his spirit of the times, his fresh work is characterized by Soe’s ability to inspire seemingly ordinary elements such as colour, design, simplicity, clarity and austerity, and to create the best visual effects by releasing their potential to produce A composition with surprisingly attractive visual power.
