A view across the border in Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus, from the rooftops of the Greek Cypriot south to the mountains of the Turkish Republic in the north. Moving between macro and micro perspectives, Flag Mountain sets dramatic spectacle against everyday life as the inhabitants of both sides of the city go about their daily business. Since 1972, John Smith has made over fifty film, video and installation works that have been shown in galleries, cinemas and on television throughout the world and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. Recent retrospectives of his films have been held at the International Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, the Tampere Short Film Festival and at other festivals in Uppsala, Glasgow, La Rochelle, Regensburg and Winterthur. Recent exhibitions include the Berlin Biennial (2010) and the Venice Biennale (2007). This is his first appearance at Media City. He lives in London, where he is Professor of Fine Art at the University of East London.
