2016 COLUSA COUNTY FAIR GUIDE 1

Back in the day. . .

By Kathy Craigo

The 44th District Agricultural Association (44th DAA) history began before the turn of the century. This year it is celebrating its 77th year.

an act of the legislature adopted on March 31, 1897 but it wasn’t until 1899 that the 44th DAA was organized as the host of the county fair.

The 44th DAA was formed in 1899 and held what is called the first in a modern series of annual expositions (Colusa County Fair) in 1900.

Peart circulated a petition to garner the needed signatures to get the ball rolling. As reported in the Daily Colusa Sun in June, 1899, the first board of directors was appointed by the Governor at that time.

E.C. Peart was dubbed the “father” of the Colusa County Fair. Previous publications on the origin of the Fair described Peart as a merchant who in spite of poor health had been in business in various locations of Colusa County since 1870. It was Peart, who in 1899 was the owner of the Bargain House on Fifth and Market, who helped to organize the 44th DAA. The County was constituted as the 44th DAA by

They were; William Ash and L.G. Manor of Williams, C.D. Stanton of Arbuckle, J. F. Campbell of Maxwell, C. P. Wilson of Grand Island and W.R. Merrill, William M. Harrington and Peart all of Colusa. The biggest job proved to be soliciting public subscriptions of funds to support the fair and the races to be held at the same time. While the legislature had appropriated $1,400 for a county fair in Colusa County, much more was deemed needed. The March 17, 1899 act appropriating this sum contained a stipulation that none of it could be used for races or to foster any kind of gambling activities. Peart and his committee managed to raise $8,750 to be offered as purses during the five days of racing at the first Colusa County Fair. Just as many Colusa County business people and individuals have done, and continue to do today;

Peart followed his philosophy of supporting his community and it’s County Fair. “The fair is beneficial to the community,” according to Will S. Green, Daily Sun editor who wrote and published the statement in 1899. “It lets the outside world know that there is such a place as Colusa, brings about a friendly rivalry between pumpkin, grain, fruit, sheep, cattle and horse raisers and is an inducement for everyone to improve on what they raise,” he wrote. . . . and so it goes; just as it was in the beginning, The Colusa County Fair remains a huge part of the pride, promotion and love of what the people of Colusa County are so very proud of sharing with its visitors. Editor’s note: Information contained in this article was found in an article by Robert L. Johnson which was published in the Colusa Sun Herald on June 16, 1976.

Getting to Know Mike Doherty...

Our New Colusa County Fair Board Member Tell us about yourself.

I have lived in Colusa County all my life except for a short stint at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for college. My parents were Michael V. and Kirsten K. Doherty who farmed in the Arbuckle area. We are part of a multi generational Colusa County farming family. I went to Pierce High School in Arbuckle and then received a degree in Fruit Science from Cal Poly. Returning home to join the family farm and started farming with my father and later my brothers Sean and Tim. I married Amy (Myers) Doherty in 1996 and we have two children: Molly, 18, who graduates from Pierce High School in June, and Emma, 14. who is a freshman at Pierce High School. My wife Amy and I currently operate Chamisal Creek Ranch where we grow wine grapes and almonds and manage high density olive plantings. We also own and operate Grindstone Wines, our wine label that is made entirely from Colusa County grapes. What do you love about Colusa County?

I love the rural atmosphere, the small town feel and being surrounded by friends and family. Tell us about your involvement in the fair foundation?

I am a proud member of the Colusa County Fair Foundation and have

been since its inception. The board of the Foundation is working hard to preserve our Fair’s heritage and viability. Through membership, strategic alliances and fundraisers we feel we are making a difference.

What do you look forward to the most about serving on the board?

As a recent appointee to the 44th D.A.A. Fair Board I am looking forward to carrying on the mission of the Fair Foundation. I also will work in making sure that the Fair is under sound management and that it offers something to all the citizens of Colusa County in one manner or another. What are your favorite things about our fair?

For me as a past 4-H and F.F.A exhibitor and 4-H leader, my favorite thing about the Fair is the Junior Livestock Show and Auction. To see all the kids working hard on their projects and showing them to the best of their ability after months of hard work is something we should be proud of. How would you like to see the community get involved with the fair?

Get involved and participate by volunteering or helping out. Talk to the fair staff or the board members and voice your concerns or compliments or any ideas that we could entertain to make the fair better.

Memories from “The Voice of the Fair” By Jim Lemos

I began working as the Voice of the Fair over thirty years ago when Roger Gibbs became fair manager. I was in charge of the program at the Colusa County Center of Yuba College and Roger was teaching night classes for us. When he was appointed manager he came to me and said if he was going to continue teaching for me at Yuba, I’d have to go to work for him during the fair. I’m still here. We’ve have some great entertainers here at the Colusa County Fair over the years. One of my all-time favorites were The Drifters who performed here two different years. They put on a terrific show. Freddy Fender was great, very friendly and easy to work with. The Nelson’s likewise. We’ve had some great local entertainment including the Poppinga Family, Highway 20, and years ago Cottonwood. The ground acts we’ve had over the years have been fun and entertaining. I used to say, each year I’d go from the world of academics to working for a week with clowns, jugglers, and carnies. I honestly enjoyed it, otherwise I wouldn’t have continued to do it. I’d go from wearing a tux for the Mini-Miss and Miss Colusa County pageants, to wearing shorts and getting hit with mud at the derby. When I was growing up, the back fence of our property was adjacent to a fairground, so I’ve always been around fairs ever since my childhood. When I first began working at the Colusa County Fair I said I was doing it for our kids. Now I say I work at the fair for my grandkids. In reality, I really enjoy working at the fair. To me, it’s like a family or class reunion. I get to see people that I might only see once a year, and it’s at the fair! As my family has always said, “Fair time is Fun Time.”

Festival Stage Madison Hudson Raised in the small town of Wheatland California, Madison convinced her parents to spend the money they had saved for her college tuition on sound gear so that she could form a band. Her promise to them was that she would graduate from high school a year early and make enough money singing to pay for college herself. Madison did graduate a year early and has just completed her first year of college that she paid for and she has enrolled and paid for her full second year already. Never one to let something stand in her way of getting on stage and sharing her passion of country music, Madison has had the opportunity over the last four years to sing with some of the best vocalists around. She has shared the stage with the Doobie Brothers. She has opened for several national artists and sat in with most of the current bands playing in Northern California. At the age of twelve she recorded her first song and produced a music video. Never one to be labeled or placed in a category, Madison’s vocals are unique in country music. Madison can be found in the audience of a show as much as on stage. Always wanting to take the music closer to the listener and drawing them in, always a pleasure to talk to and one of the most grateful musicians you will find.

Def Cats Defcats is a musical and spiritual brotherhood of veteran Chico musicians. Their desire is to lift spirits, move feet, and celebrate life using the universal language of rhythm and harmony. Defcats features vocalheavy covers of classic songs by the best bands of every era.

Hannah Jane Kile Hannah Jane Kile on first impression is sweet and lovely, bright and cheerful... then, with a flourish of harmony pouring from her guitar, she steps up to sing and you enter another realm. Hannah is radiantly fluent in the universal language of multi-instruments & song where she has the gift of making seriously beautiful music with effortless grace. Her performances are always artistically surprising and deeply moving. She finds treasure in even the most daunting of life’s experiences. Her songs and her voice, soulful and haunting, are magic, as she fearlessly shares the most complex of emotions with her listeners often drawing comparisons to her heroes Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, & Adele.

High Noon High Noon is a hot and fresh Rockin’ Country Band, no solo man. They’re a band that all grew up in the country and play all of the new age country music with big guitar sound, punching drums, and 4 part vocal harmonies. All young and friendly musicians, High Noon is a band like no other around. They are all pro musicians who have played with big touring acts such as Big and Rich, Merle Haggard, Montgomery Gentry, Tyler Farr, Clint Black and even Tesla to name a few. With combined talents that have played all over California, Nevada, Texas and Oregon they decided to create a band that will blow people away as they hear them for the first time.

Main Stage Rovetti & Meatballs Rovetti & Meatballs is a well-known band from Sonoma County. Paul’s first practice was with a band in Richmond Hill led by “Gabby” Worme. Paul has been a member of the Harmonics Steelband since 1980. The Harmonics has warmed the hearts of many pan lovers in the San Francisco Bay Area with their varied repertoire over and over again. FAIR ATTRACTIONS Etchepare Garden Keith Bear Mandan-Hidatsa storyteller and musician Keith Bear weaves a magic of story, song, history and personal reflection that enchants audiences of all ages. Reflecting the dignity and spiritual wisdom of his ancestors, he inspires reverence for the earth and all our relatives, gratitude for the diversity of human experience, and appreciation of the beauty of traditional Native American songs and stories, many of which have been shared for hundreds of years. Keith Bear is an educator who works with students of all ages in school programs and residencies. He is an award-winning recording artist for Makoche Records who performs solo and ensemble concerts through the United States and Europe.

RazzVio RazzVio is a violin and electronic drum duo that reinvents familiar pop and rock arrangements from an entirely different angle. Through live looping, they feature powerhouse vocals with a modern beat and a unique violin designed to build songs with the sophistication of a string quartet. Razz is a songwriter and classically trained musician. She performs with a custom 6-string electric violin called a ‘Viper Violin’ which allows her to sing and play at the same time and encompasses the range of a violin, viola, and cello. Kevin Proctor is a multi-instrumentalist as well as the producer and engineer of the project. The duo have toured throughout the United States with their intimate, self-sustained, and volume-controlled setup; delighting listeners in concert halls and street corners since 2013. Prepare to be enthralled by their music and talent. Don’t miss them this year, they are a MUST SEE!!

Grandstand Events Who’s Bad Now heading into their second decade as the Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, Who’s Bad continues to show their dedication and devotion to the King of Pop, playing in more cities worldwide to more fans than any other MJ tribute act. Their social media following has exploded in recent years as well; the band recently surpassed 311,000 likes on Facebook.

North Carolina alum, Vamsi Tadepalli, has grown to be something bigger and more symbolic than he ever dreamed it could be: “After college, we started rehearsing in my parents’ basement to prepare for local and regional shows in the Southeast. With a critical approach to the music and visuals, we put everything we had into our performances – word spread quickly, and today the band is an internationally touring act. Back then, not even in my dreams was this a possibility.” In the last decade, Who’s Bad has cemented a legacy as the fan’s choice of Michael Jackson tributes by consistently delivering performances that thrill Michael Jackson fans and quickly win over skeptics.

Destruction Derby The 2015 Destruction Derby was a huge success due to a higher involvement from our sponsors and community. The Destruction Derby was significantly larger than previous years with a total of 25 Full Size Entries (the highest entry rate in the State of California), Truck and Compact entries, as well as a purse that exceeded $5,000. Plans for this year’s derby include an open pit, expansion of the pits, and an expectation of higher entry rates. We will see you Sunday, June 12th at 7 P.M. for what is expected to be a phenomenal derby.

2016 COLUSA COUNTY FAIR GUIDE 21

Growing Up in Colusa County I started 4-H at the age of 9 and was involved for ten years. I never took an animal to auction, but participated in breeding projects and showing cattle. A highlight was always the round robin competitions every year, which I even had the opportunity to win a couple times. I believe that the Colusa County auction is the highlight of the fair. It gives our youth the opportunity to participate in local agriculture. Going and seeing our kids working hard and doing their thing is great! I love our rural community, and the fact that we’re so small. Living here gives people the opportunity for great friendships and a familylike community. Louis Kaelin

I raised animals, but I didn’t take them to the fair because there wasn’t an auction. I did take my steer to the Maxwell rodeo so the kids could all pet him and people could see him. When I was young, we had to sell our animals at a regular auction for market price. We also got to go to the Cow Palace so the city kids could see how we lived and we could see how they live, but I think they learned more from us.

My mom and dad were both heavily involved in the fair. My dad was part of the fair’s opening ceremonies every year as far back as I can remember. He and my mother both dedicated a lot of their time to the fair, as well as the Arbuckle 4-H program. I will never forget the first year I had a steer at the fair. He got spooked and somehow got loose from his stall area in the livestock barn and took off running through the fairgrounds! I just remember a huge stampede of cowboys running after him! After a long jaunt around the fair, they finally got him lassoed and back in the barn. My poor parents. It wasn’t a great memory for them, but is definitely one I won’t forget! Stacey Peterson Harrington

The best experience I had, my claim to fame, was the test plot I did with feeding almond hulls to lambs in 1948. The woolgrowers gave me 6 lambs for the project. I gave 2 straight alfalfa, 2 ½ alfalfa and ½ almond hills and 2 straight hulls. The ones that got ½ alfalfa and ½ hulls did the same as those that just got straight alfalfa. I had to go the annual Woolgrowers association meeting and give a presentation on my project. The Etchepere family promoted the project. That next year we got 50 cents a ton for our hulls! Raymond Charter Raising animals has always been a family tradition for us. My brother Jimmy and I would battle it out over feeding and walking the lambs. Although it could get a little tense at times, I always knew he had my back and would help out when I needed him. It’s fun to see the tradition continue and see my kids, along with my niece and nephew, involved with livestock. This time of year reminds me of my dad, and I only wish he could be here to see all of the kids take part in the fair. I have such great memories of the fair with my family and it’s wonderful that we continue to create more each year. Susie Traynham Stassi 22 2016 COLUSA COUNTY FAIR GUIDE

I loved the fair! It meant school was out, summer was beginning, and best of all, I was done with my lamb. The funniest 4-H memory I have was taking our lambs to the weigh-in day in the back of my mom’s station wagon. When we got them back home, they escaped out of the car, scared the cow in the pasture, and the cows broke through the fence and ran through the tomato field. It was a train wreck! Thankfully, Charlene LaGrande and her posse came to the rescue! Brett LaGrande
