Infierno en el Pacífico Hell in the Pacific
La demencia bélica aparece admirablemente sintetizada en esta película singular, que prescinde rápidamente de las palabras porque éstas no hacen entenderse a los protagonistas. Algunos datos laterales permiten deducir que la acción transcurre durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial: un norteamericano y un japonés, varados en una misma isla desierta, prolongan irracionalmente la confrontación de sus respectivos países aunque no hay nadie cerca que los obligue a ello. Con un empleo virtuoso de la pantalla ancha, Boorman los muestra alternativamente animalizados, desesperados, conquistadores, conquistados y finalmente sociables, como si a través de ambos resumiera con ironía la historia de la humanidad. A esa proeza general de realización debe agregarse una sutil banda sonora compuesta por Lalo Schifrin y ese doble milagro que fueron Mifune y Marvin, dos actores que supieron imponer, ante todo, excepcionales presencias físicas con las cuales logran sostener sin otra ayuda todo el film.
Military madness appears admirably synthesized in this remarkable film, which from early on avoids the use of words, because the main characters can’t use them to communicate. From a few indirect facts we may deduce that the action takes place during the Second World War: an American and a Japanese, stranded on the same deserted island, irrationally extend the confrontation between their respective countries, although there is nobody around who orders them to do so. Boorman virtuously employs the widescreen to show them behaving like animals, desperate, alternately playing the role of conqueror and conquered, and finally socializing, as if their relationship ironically summarized the story of humanity. This cinematographic feat includes the subtle soundtrack composed by Lalo Schifrin and the miraculous performances of Mifune and Marvin, two actors who managed to impose, among everything else, their impressive physical presence with which they sustain the whole film.

John Boorman Nacido en 1933 en Shepperton, Inglaterra, fue jefe de la Unidad Documental de la BBC de Bristol antes de ingresar a la industria cinematográfica con Catch Us If You Can (1965), un intento de reeditar el éxito de Anochecer de un día agitado con la banda Dave Clark Five. En Hollywood dirigió, entre otras, A quemarropa (1967), La violencia está en nosotros (1972) y El sastre de Panamá (2001); en Inglaterra, El príncipe sin palacio (1969; premio al Mejor Director en Cannes), Excalibur (1980), La selva esmeralda (1985) y La esperanza y la gloria (1987; cinco nominaciones al Oscar). Su último film es The Tiger’s Tail (2006). Born in 1933 in Shepperton, England. He was the head of the BBC’s Bristol-based Documentary Unit and then began his career in the film industry with Catch Us If You Can, a film aimed at repeating the success of A Hard Day’s Night, this time with the band Dave Clark Five. In Hollywood he directed, among others, Point Blank (1967), Deliverance (1972) and The Tailor of Panama (2001). In England, Leo the Last (1969, awarded the Best Director Prize in Cannes), Excalibur (1981), The Emerald Forest (1985) and Hope and Glory (1987, five Oscar nominations). His latest film is The Tiger’s Tail (2006).
