A Night at the Opera is one of the most outstanding films of the Marxist filmography and it owes as much to the Marx brothers (Chico, Harpo, Groucho) as it does to producer Irving Thalberg, who insisted in taking them to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and have them star a blockbuster, although the Marx Brothers had starred in a couple of brilliant but unprofitable films for the rival company Paramount. The key consisted in emphasizing the contrast between anarchist humor and the aristocratic atmosphere of the New York opera house, an idea which justified the use of abundant music and the inclusion of a love story which would keep the audience grounded. The international success of the film opened new perspectives in the cinematographic career of the brothers. Among the many scenes which will go down in history, the crammed dressing room one, based on an idea by Buster Keaton, is one the best. A new copy of the film will be screened, thanks to APROCINAIN, and the collaboration of Kodak and Cinecolor.
