Camino Enamorarse, cumplir años, enfermar, morir. Un recorrido no del todo especial, salvo que los años cumplidos sean apenas 12 y esas cuatro estaciones se sucedan, apuradas, en un puñado de meses. Así es la historia que narra la última película de Fesser, inspirada en varios casos reales de lo que ha dado en llamarse “olor a santidad”: la de una niña llamada Camino, postrada por culpa de un raro tumor. Camino (la luminosa Nerea Camacho, ganadora de uno de los seis premios Goya que obtuvo el film) tiene el nombre de un libro escrito por el fundador del Opus Dei, porque su familia pertenece a ese grupo católico –que, previsiblemente, puso el grito en el cielo por la forma en que es representado por Fesser–, y unas lucidez y presencia de espíritu extraordinarias para su edad. Y aunque este relato para llorar a mares, con momentos de auténtico terror religioso y gore quirúrgico, parezca alejado del universo habitual del director, tiene espacio también para la fantasía (en los sueños de Camino) y para la ironía (en paralelos que no por directos son menos efectivos). Pueden preguntárselo al duende de cuento infantil Mr. Peebles, un hombre muy sabio pero con un problema: si no se cree en él, deja de existir.

To fall in love, grow old, get sick and die. A not very special journey, except that the main character is twelve years old, and these four stages take place, one after the other, in only a couple of months. This is the story portrayed in Fesser´s last feature film, inspired by several real stories of what is known as the “Odor of Sanctity”: that of a girl called Camino, confined to bed because of a rare tumor. Camino (the radiant Nerea Camacho, awarded one of the six Goya won by the film) is named after one of the books written by the founder of the Opus Dei, as her family belongs to this catholic group -who, predictably, complained about the way it was depicted by Fesser- and is extraordinarily lucid and has great presence of spirit for her age. Even though this tear jerker, with moments of pure religious terror and surgical gore, seems to move away from the director’s usual universe, there is also room for fantasy (in Camino’s dreams) and for irony (in direct yet effective parallelisms). You can ask Mr. Peebles, the children’s stories elf, a very wise man with only one problem: if you don’t believe in him, he stops existing.
