TÂM TÌN H CHA TUYÊN UÝ

Tham dự Thánh Lễ với Đức Thánh Cha tại bãi biển Copacabana nổi tiếng thế giới, tham dự Thánh Lễ với hơn 3 triệu bạn trẻ khác trên thế giới, chia sẻ niềm hăng say nhiệt huyết với bạn trẻ Công Giáo quốc tế trong suốt một tuần, hội ngộ với phong trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể thế giới, hội ngộ với người Việt Công Giáo từ nhiều quốc gia… đây có thể là một vài những điểm nổi bật của chuyến hành hương Đại Hội Giới Trẻ Thế Giới ở Rio, Brazil hè năm 2013. Nhưng đối với tôi, chuyến đi còn là một cảm nghiệm đặc biệt vượt quá những cái vui vẻ hào hứng bên ngoài. Đây thực sự là một chuyến hành hương của tâm linh, nơi tôi gặp gỡ được Đức Kitô nơi niềm tin tràn đầy sức sống của các bạn trẻ trong Giáo hội của Ngài.

Khi Đức Cố Giáo Hoàng Gioan Phaolô II chứng kiến hàng trăm ngàn giới trẻ quốc tế họp mặt nhau vào Lễ Lá năm 1985 ở Roma, Ngài đã ra sáng kiến biến ngày họp mặt này thành một cuộc hành hương Đại Hội Giới Trẻ cho toàn thế giới. Đại hội đầu tiên được tổ chức tại Roma năm 1986. Từ đó trở đi, Giáo hội và cả thế giới chứng kiến ở những kỳ đại hội sự hưởng ứng nhiệt tình của các bạn trẻ khắp năm châu, tụ họp với nhau để học hỏi Lời Chúa và Giáo huấn Giáo hội, cùng chia sẻ niềm vui và nhiệt huyết của tuổi trẻ Công Giáo qua các buổi thờ phượng và các sinh hoạt văn hoá nghệ thuật khác. Buenos Aires, Argentina năm 1987; Santiago de Compostela, Tây Ban Nha năm 1989; Czestochowa, Ba Lan năm 1991; Denver, Hoa Kỳ năm 1993; Manila, Phillipines năm 1995; Paris, Pháp năm 1997; Roma, Ý năm 2000; Toronto, Canada năm 2002; Cologne, Đức năm 2005; Sydney, Úc năm 2008; Madrid, Tây Ban Nha năm 2011, và lần vừa rồi: Rio de Jainero, Brazil năm 2013.

sau: Trong ngày Thứ Hai và sáng Thứ Ba, các tham dự viên thường dành thời gian thăm viếng những di tích thắng cảnh của thành phố đăng cai Đại hội.

Thánh Lễ Khai mạc thường được Đức Giám Mục sở tại cử hành vào tối Thứ Ba. Vào các buổi sáng Thứ Tư, Thứ Năm và Thứ Sáu, các nhóm tham dự buổi thuyết trình Giáo Lý do các Đức Giám Mục theo ngôn ngữ của mình diễn giải ở những địa điểm rải rác khắp thành phố. Các tham dự viên Việt Nam cũng thường có một địa điểm để quây quần bên nhau, và nghe các vị Giám Mục Việt Nam diễn thuyết, cũng như tham dự Thánh Lễ trong ba buổi sáng này. Các buổi chiều là giời gian tự do để các tham dự viên có thể tham dự các buổi hòa nhạc, triển lãm, chiếu phim, thăm viện bảo tàng hay di tích tôn giáo trong thành phố. Tối Thứ Tư thường dành cho các tổ chức quốc tế và quốc gia nhóm họp và sinh hoạt với nhau. Chẳng hạn nhóm hành hương Hoa Kỳ có thể tìm họp mặt ở một địa điểm nào đó, phong trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể quốc tế kỳ vừa rồi cũng họp mặt và sinh hoạt vui chơi, nhóm giới trẻ Lasan hay Salêdiêng cũng tổ chức những festival quy mô cho thành viên quốc tế của họ vào tối Thứ Tư, v.v… Tối Thứ Năm có nghi thức chào đón Đức Thánh Cha, khi ngài chủ sự buổi Kinh Chiều ở một địa điểm rộng lớn đủ để chứa hàng triệu bạn trẻ, cùng ca hát nhảy múa, mà cũng sốt sắng trong lời kinh tiếng ca. Tối Thứ Sáu thường dùng để suy niệm Chặng Đường Thánh Giá do chính các bạn trẻ địa phương tổ chức: rất sâu lắng, ý nghĩa mà cũng rất thú vị và nhiều tính nghệ thuật. Ngày Thứ Bảy, các tham dự viên đi bộ (theo tinh thần “hành hương”) từ chỗ họ cư ngụ đến một địa điểm định sẵn, để tham dự Đêm Canh Thức cùng với Đức Thánh Cha. Đây thường là điểm nổi bật nhất của tuần lễ Đại Hội. Lần tổ chức vừa rồi ở Rio, đêm Canh Thức được tổ chức ở bãi biễn vĩ đại Copacabana trải dài mấy dặm. Ban tổ chức ước lượng khoảng 3 triệu rưỡi bạn trẻ có mặt ở bãi biển này cuối tuần đó. Đức Thánh Cha chủ sự buổi cầu nguyện thường bao gồm các bài chia sẻ giảng dạy, xen lẫn những tiết mục diễn nguyện hay

văn nghệ vui tươi trẻ trung, và thường kết thúc bằng giờ Chầu Thánh Thể. Các bạn trẻ sẽ ngủ qua đêm tại địa điểm này để sáng hôm sau tham dự Thánh Lễ Bế Mạc. Nói là ngủ qua đêm, nhưng phần lớn các bạn thức gần suốt đêm vui chơi sinh hoạt và giao lưu với các bạn bè từ khắp năm châu. Đâu đâu cũng nghe tiếng nhạc, ca hát, nhảy múa, trò chơi tập thể, hay ngồi chia sẻ tâm tình. Đây thực sự là hình ảnh của một thế giới hòa bình, thân ái khi mọi người đủ mọi sắc tộc màu da cùng được quy tụ với nhau dưới một mái nhà Giáo Hội và trong cùng một đức tin vào Chúa Kitô. Thánh Lễ Bế Mạc sáng Chúa Nhật thường kéo thêm vài trăm ngàn dân Công Giáo địa phương.

Thế giới thường choáng ngợp trước sức mạnh đức tin của rừng người Công Giáo khi họ chứng kiến Thánh lễ vĩ đại này.

Các kỳ Đại hội vừa rồi, tôi đăng ký đi hành hương chung với nhóm trẻ Salêdiêng, nhóm cũng có một tên khác là Nhóm Trẻ 117 do gia đình Salêdiêng Don Bosco tổ chức. Từ Hoa Kỳ cũng có một nhóm khác thường tổ chức đi trên quy mô lớn, đó là nhóm giới trẻ La-san do gia đình La-san tổ chức. Khi đi chung với một tổ chức lớn như thế này, điểm tích cực là những chương trình sinh hoạt và hoạt động tâm linh được tổ chức kỹ lưỡng, và đi hành hương với bạn đồng hành thường đem lại một cảm nghiệm hay hơn đi một mình. Cũng có một số cá nhân đi theo địa phận hay nhóm riêng của mình tổ chức. Giáo Hội tại Việt Nam cũng thường xuyên tổ chức tham dự, nhưng số lượng tham dự thường bất định do điều kiện còn khó khăn so với điều kiện của người Việt hải ngoại. Tại những buổi hội ngộ của người Công Giáo Việt Nam trong tuần lễ Đại Hội, có một cám giác gì đó rất thân thương gần gũi khi những bài hát tiếng Việt và những câu kinh quen thuộc lại được vang lên từ những con tim mang dòng máu Việt họp lại từ khắp bốn phương.

Các bạn trẻ Việt Nam thuộc thế hệ thứ hai-thế hệ sinh trưởng ở hại ngoại-thường cảm động khi chứng kiến và cùng chia sẻ những giây phút hội ngộ bên bạn bè cùng gốc Việt Nam nhưng lại nói nhiều ngôn ngữ khác nhau ngoài tiếng Việt mà các bạn biết được.

Có một truyền thống tốt đẹp khác là các tổ chức đoàn nhóm này thường sắp xếp sao để họ có

thể đến quốc gia đăng cai trước tuần Đại hội để có thể tham gia công tác từ thiện hay mission project với các giáo phận hay dòng tu ở địa phương. Đây cũng là một kinh nghiệm quý báu để các tham dự viên có cơ hội hòa nhập và tìm hiểu Giáo hội và cuộc sống địa phương sâu xa hơn, và để làm cho Đại hội Giới Trẻ mang thêm hương vị của một cuộc hành hương tâm linh chứ không phải chỉ đơn thuần là đi tham quan thắng cảnh và tham dự một hội nghị quốc tế.

Ở những kỳ Đại hội gần đây, càng ngày càng có nhiều thành viên của phong trào Thiếu Nhi Thánh Thể tham dự, như để đáp lại lời mời gọi của Đức Thánh Cha, đến để cùng vui mừng chia sẻ một nhiệt huyết đức tin của những người trẻ Công Giáo trên toàn thế giới. Lần Đại hội tới sẽ được tổ chức tại Ba Lan vào năm 2016. Mong ước sao các bạn trẻ Công Giáo Việt Nam, nhất là thành viên của phong trào TNTT hưởng ứng và tham dự cuộc hành hương mang lại sự canh tân niềm tin của tuổi trẻ Giáo hội như các kỳ Đại hội đã từng chứng kiến.

articipating in the Mass celebrated by Pope Francis at the world famous Copacabana Beach, gathering there with three millions Catholics pilgrims, eager to share the passion for their faith, meeting members of the international Eucharistic Movement, and meeting Vietnamese Catholics from all over the world….those were some of the highlights of World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. But beyond the excitement and the enthusiasm of such fellowship, this trip for me was truly a pilgrimage of the spirit. It was a pilgrimage in which I experienced Christ through the robust faith of the youths of His Church.

After Pope John Paul II witnessed hundreds of thousands of young people gathered in Rome for Palm Sunday in 1985, he proposed that the one day meeting should become a pilgrimage for the youths of the whole wide world. The first World Youth Day was held in Rome in 1986. From then on, the world witnessed an enthusiastic response from the Catholic youths who would gather together in a major city to study the teachings of God and the Roman Catholic Church, and join in the fun in faith, hope, and love. These common elements of World Youth Day continued in: Buenos Ares, Argentina in 1987, Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1989, Czestochowa, Poland in 1991, Denver, United States in 1993, Manila, Philippines in 1995, Paris, France in 1997, Rome, Italy in 2000, Toronto, Canada in 2002, Cologne, Germany in 2005, Sydney, Australia in 2008, Madrid, Spain in 2011, and the most recently, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The typical week during World Youth Day is as followed. Throughout Monday and Tuesday mornings, pilgrims take time to visit tourist attractions within

the host city. The Opening Mass of World Youth day takes place Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings, pilgrims will head to Catechism sessions presided by Bishops or Cardinals invited from all over the world at different sites in the city. There was a session for Vietnamese pilgrims with Vietnamese Bishops. The Bishops also celebrate mass on all three days. In the evenings, pilgrims head to cultural festivals, music concerts, and appropriate parties, all happening throughout the host city.

Wednesday night is usually a time when different organizations hold their meetings. For example, there was a meeting for all pilgrims from America. The Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Society had its own Adoration session and dance party, while the Salesians affiliated groups met with other Salesians from around the world. Thursday night is where all pilgrims come out to greet the Pope (usually, the Pope arrives on this day. This year, however, Pope Francis arrived on Monday to visit various locations in Brazil before participating in other World Youth Day activities). The Pope then shares with the pilgrim his thoughts on the celebration.

On Friday night, pilgrims witness the Passion of Christ as it is reenacted on the streets of the city with the Pope presiding over. Saturday is the apex of each World Youth Day celebration. The attendants will make a “pilgrimage” from their current residences to an apointed place to hold vigil with the Holy Father. The vigil features various lectures and entertaining performances, ending with Adoration led by the Pope. This year, the Vigil was held at the famous Copacabana beach, with an estimated over 3 billions people in attendance. Many groups choose to stay overnight at the area of the vigil. Sunday morning is when the Final Mass is celebrated by the Pope, followed by the announcement of where the next World Youth Day will be held.

For the past couple of pilgrimage, I traveled with Youth 117, a group under the organization of the Salesian

Don Bosco community. There was also another large Vietnamese American group that went with a La Salle affiliated group that was organized by the respective organization. Those attendees traveling with a large group have the benefit of fellowship with other from diverse locations and backgrounds, as well as well planned events organized by the group. There were also small groups and individuals that traveled by themselves during the pilgrimage. The Vietnamese community also had a group from Vietnam, but the government restricted the number of pilgrims from the country to prevent large groups from attending the event. During the Vietnamese catechist sessions, Vietnamese groups would gather to speak, sing, and celebrate Mass in Vietnamese.

One of the most memorable experiences I had in our group was the mission trip that took place before go-

ing to Rio for World Youth Day. My cohorts and I were divided into smaller groups and given various projects in which the group mingled with the local Catholic community. These projects are opportunities for the attendee to experience the global Church and gain a better understanding of the Church, making the pilgrimage a richer spiritual journey rather than just sightseeing and networking at an International event.

In recent years, more members of VEYS are attending, responding to the Pope’s call to share in the universal faith of the Catholic Church. The next World Youth Day will be held in Krakow, Poland in 2016 from July 26th to July 31st. It is my hope that more VEYS members will be able to attend this pilgrimage and experience the transformative power of the World Youth Days.

LETTER Vice-PRESIDENT FROM THE

Kính chào Quý Cha Tuyên Úy, Quý Trợ Úy, Quý Trợ Tá, các Huynh Trưởng và toàn thể các em Thiếu Nhi Miền Đông Nam quý mến,

Mùa thu đã tới, lá vàng lại rơi và một năm nữa chuẩn bị kết thúc. Nhìn lại một năm qua, Miền Đông Nam chúng ta có thể nói là được Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể ban rất nhiều phúc lành. Trại huấn luyện Huynh Trưởng không những đã trao dồi thêm kiến thức mà đã mang đầy tràn tinh thần cho các Trưởng. Các buổi tĩnh tâm mang các Trưởng đến gần Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể hơn. Miền Đông Nam ngày càng lớn mạnh là nhờ sự chăm sóc, cầu nguyện và hy sinh của các Cha, và toàn thể các thành viên trong miền. Nhìn lại, tất cả những sự yêu thương của các Cha, các Trợ Úy , Trợ Tá, những hy sinh, hăng say của các Trưởng là niềm vui và hãnh diện cho Tú nói riêng và cho Ban Thường Vụ Miền nói chung. Tú xin nói lên lời Cám Ơn đến tất cả mọi người đã hỗ trợ và giúp đỡ Ban Thường Vụ trong một năm qua.

Trong năm sắp tới, Tú mong các Cha, các Trợ Úy, Trợ Tá, và các Huynh Trưởng sẽ tiếp tục ũng hộ và tham gia những dự án mà Ban Thường Vụ đã gởi ra. Nhất là, trong những năm sắp tới, chúng ta có thể sẽ có thêm hai đến ba đoàn sẽ thành lập trong Miền. Tú xin kêu gọi các Đoàn bạn giúp đỡ những Đoàn mới hay sẽ thành lập. Cùng nhau, chúng ta mang Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể đến cho mọi người trong đại gia đình Miền Đông Nam chúng ta.

Xin kính chúc Quý Cha Tuyên Úy, Quý Trợ Úy, Quý Trợ Tá, các Huynh Trưởng và toàn thể các em mùa Lễ Tạ Ơn và mùa Giáng Sinh vui vẽ, đầy tràn hồng ân của Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể.

Nguyện xin Chúa Giêsu Anh Cả của chúng ta luôn đồng hành với Miền Đông Nam trong mọi hoàn cảnh sinh hoạt, và luôn ban ơn lành cho chúng ta.

his past summer, đoàn Phaolo Lê Bảo Tịnh had a few summer events, but most importantly, was our involvement with our parish’s renovation project. We are remodeling our gym into a social hall with a commercial kitchen that can be used as a place to celebrate mass with the whole congregation. Our Huynh Trưởng and Hiệp Sĩ Trưởng Thành worked vigorously at church every weekend this past summer.

We’re glad that the project is coming to completion in October, and very proud of our HT and HSTT for their hard work and dedication. Besides that, we also had our regular summer activities such as:

* Sa Mạc Huấn Luyện Huynh Trưởng cấp I và II in Charlotte, North Carolina (May 16 to 19) and in Lincoln, Nebraska (August 16 to 18) Confirmation Retreat – May 18 to 19

* Annual Archdiocese of Atlanta Eucharistic Congress where members of Tôma Thiện and Lê Bảo Tịnh served as the honor guard for the Eucharistic procession – June 1 to 2

* Sa Mạc Hừng Đông 22, our first summer camp at an off-site location – June 14 to 16

* Đại Hội Giáo Lý in Baton Rouge, Louisiana – June 21 to 23

* World Youth Day in Brazil, in which a number of our Huynh Trưởng had an opportunity to experience – July 15 to 29

Đoàn Phaolo Lê Bảo Tịnh rang in the new 2013-2014 school year on September 15, 2013 with an estimated number of 480 kids, around 30 Huynh Trưởng, and 15 Hiệp Sĩ Trưởng Thành (HSTT). HSTT will assist HT in the classrooms, mostly in Ngành Ấu.

They are encouraged, given opportunities to step up, and take charge of activities and events throughout the year. LBT is really excited to see an increase in HT stepping up to be catechists this year, in addition to their HT responsibilities. We went from four Huynh Trưởng teaching catechism last year to ten Huynh Trưởng this year.

The new school year starts out with a lot of events and activities. After finishing up the preparation for our Ngày Khai Giảng, we jumped straight into the planning and preparing for the upcoming events:

* Tết Trung Thu with the theme of ‘Chuyện Xưa Tích Cũ’ with a traditional Vietnamese folktale costume contest (Chị Hằng, Chú Cuội, Ông Bụt…) – September 28

* Tông Đồ Đội Trưởng/Đội Phó and Tĩnh Huấn Hiệp Sĩ with THHS starting on Friday night – October 4 to 5

* Annual Đại Hội Đức Mẹ La Vang, celebrating

It is going to be a busy year. But we are glad and excited to be able to use our time, talent, and treasure to serve God and the community, to be true disciples of Jesus!

ến hôm nay được dịp tâm sự với các bạn cảm nghĩ trước và sau khi tham gia Sinai 19.Tôi muốn đi học là vì muốn phát huy cá nhân giúp thăng tiến đoàn và xin được góp một bàn tay với Phong Trào chớ không có một chút tham vọng gì.

Vào năm nay là đúng 13 năm sau khi trở lại đất trai học tập,13 năm qua chỉ biết lo cho song thân,vợ và con cái; cho đến một ngày đẹp vào mùa Xuân năm nay quyết tâm chí đi tập học làm Huấn Luyện Viên.

Tôi nói với vợ: “Em ạ, anh muốn đi học khóa TNTT để lấy lại phong độ và giúp ích cho đoàn mình. Mẹ ,em và các con được Chúa thương, gia đình mình ổn định rồi, cho anh tham gia nhé em?” Vì muốn đi học,nên chiều vợ con hết cở luôn. Lén lúc đăng ký khóa học mà không cho vợ biết sợ la rầy. Sau một thời gian chờ đợi, có kết quả tốt là được chính thức có tên trong sổ ghi danh sa mạc sinh.Trong những tuần êm đềm bổng có điện thoại vợ gọi vào sáng sớm vừa nói vứa khóc “Mẹ chết rồi anh về liền đi”. Tôi bỏ lỡ công việc

đó chạy một mặt đến nhà. Khi đến nhà thì cảnh sát đậu trước nhà rồi,chạy vào phòng mẹ,tôi ôm chật lấy mẹ rồi hai giòng nước mắt cứ tuôn ra aò aò cho đến khi nhà

tôi có suy nghĩ cái chết của mẹ, và điều này làm thức tịnh trái tim nguội lạnh nầy.

Trở lại sinh hoạt với các em,tinh thần lúc nầy đang vương lên cao. thấy thế, tôi cúi đầu cấm cổ làm bài Tiền Sa Mạc để nộp cho đúng kỳ hạn. Nộp bài TSM xong nhẹ được vài pounds nhưng ai ngờ đâu Bố Thành dến thêm bài Hành Trình Thiêng Liên nữa, thế là cuộc đời tàn mất. Chưa đi mà bài vỡ chồng chất qúa trời như vậy, không biết sau khi về có lẽ là gấp đôi hơn nữa.Thôi thì cũng đã lỡ quyết tâm đi rồi không ngừng được bỏ dỡ dang thì các trưởng cười chết. Có Chúa cùng đồng hành ,đừng sợ cứ tiến bước. Đây là lần đầu tiên phải xa vợ con cả tuần lễ. Đến phi trường có ban đưa đón chở về nhà thờ rồi đi xe bus đến đất trại. Ở đó, có trưởng Dương chờ ở để đăng ký và nộp bài HTTL. Sau thời gian ngắn, chúng tôi vào khóa học và kéo dài đến 2 giờ sáng mới được lên giường ngủ,khỏi có tắm rữa. Được nhắm mắt một lát thì đồng hồ báo thức đậy,tôi xuống viếng Thánh Thể thì thấy trưởng Đức ở

Thời gian dần trôi qua, gia đình tôi cứ thứ Sáu và thứ Bảy là đi lễ cầu nguyện cho linh hồn mẹ sớm lên thiên đàng.Trong thời gian đó

HànhTrình ĐứcTin là khóa học khó mà quên được vì tìm đức tin ngay tai thành phố Chicago.Trên xe bus trưởng Dương dặn dò cặn kẻ và tỉ mỉ mọi chi tiết. Xe bus vừa ngừng tụ lại thành đội rồi chạy như ngựa hoang để tìm kiếm điểm xuất phát,chụp hình và giửi e-mail để làm bằng chứng.Tuổi trẻ thời nay thật thông minh,chạy lẹ hơn ngựa,còn mình thì lúc nào cũng chậm như rùa,có lẽ vì tôi mà đội mình(Ezekiel)về hạng ba.

Một tuần chung sống vời nhau thật là qúy hóa .Qúy Cha tận tụy lo từng ly từng tý.Còn Qúy Huấn Luyện Viên hết sức dạy đỗ và khuyên bảo.Cái bạn Huynh Trưởng và các em hăng say giúp đỡ nhiệt tâm.

Trở về lại mái ấm gia đình sau tuần lễ xa cách giờ đây gia đình chúng tôi siêng năng đi dựThánh lễ cuối tuần,đọc kinh với Hội Đền Tạ,hợp tác mật thiết với các trưởng ,yêu mến các em cắt đặt biệt hơn,tham gia Sa Mạc và tĩnh tâm do Miền tổ chức.Chuỗi ngày còn lại trong cuộc đời tôi mong sao gia đình tôi có thể góp một bàn tay cho Phong Trào.

Love is the key to understanding other human be-

ings on this Earth. Without love, we cannot connect with one another in an effort to unite ourselves in Christ. Love is a language, spoken by word, done by positive simple actions to show kindness.

Prior to World Youth Day, our missionary group stayed in the city of Manaus, located next to the Amazon River. We all had a blast, having been made honorary citizens and parishioners of the city, visiting the villages along the River, and touring the forests of unmatched beauty. But what would strike us most was our final visit to an orphanage.

On our last day there in the morning, we drove across the city to visit a government-run orphanage for mentally ill children. I had not really thought about it, thinking that I already knew what it was like from reading all these stories about Third World orphanages from National Geographic.

I thought of filthy living areas, foul stench hanging in the air, the lack of materials, but children that managed to laugh, welcoming us in as if this meant something for them. But when we got there, this was all reversed around...

The orphanage looked as if it were a small elementary school, complete with a swimming pool in the front. I stared in disbelief at this site. “This......is an orphanage?” I thought silently to myself as our group walked towards the entrance.

We walked into a small hallway, cramming up next to a medical room complete with a patient’s chair in the center, and a small classroom across it. Our group leader, Cha Dang, was notified that we were allowed to take pictures although usually this was not allowed. We were also allowed to meet the kids, which also was not allowed to outsiders.

Our group came in to meet these kids in this small classroom, all doing various activities in a mindless manner. They didn’t stop at whatever they were doing to greet us, continuing in an emotionless fashion. I took a couple pictures before stopping, feeling slightly uncomfortable. In the back of my mind, I began to wonder why I was feeling as if I were disrespecting them in a way even if this meeting and the picture taking were allowed. Then I felt a sudden pang of guilt and sadness, looking at the kids as they drew pictures, destroyed toys, or stared into the walls

of the tiny classroom. They were neither laughing nor crying, simply doing what was offered to them by the caretakers.

I realized that perhaps this was because they did not have parents, parents who were the source of happiness and joy to the lives of these children, absent, missing from this little classroom. As a result, they had no external or internal happiness, the joy people saw in average children, or at least a smile to acknowledge visitors. I sensed that these kids, despite their mental illness, knew that someone was taking care of them, but had no hope because they had no parents, or someone whom they could call their own, who could make them truly happy.

Staring at these orphans again after realizing this, I felt a pang of sadness for the kids.

“Don’t......not in here in front of everybody” I muttered silently to myself in an effort not to cry.

Our group moved outside to a courtyard where the rest of the kids were sitting. They were all sitting in wheelchairs, silently watching TV, oblivious to us who had come to visit. Like the children inside the tiny classroom, these kids didn’t look like they had the energy or happiness that a child had with parents.

Perhaps they had never felt it before.

In an effort to not stand there awkwardly looking at the kids, our group fanned out among them in an attempt to talk, despite not speaking that much Portuguese. Strangely, I found myself standing where I was, looking at my good friend Anh Thinh as he walked up ahead towards a young orphan. This boy like the rest of his friends stared in a clueless manner toward the soap opera on the TV channel look-

ing as if he were dying slowly of some sort of disease.

Anh Thinh held out his hand in a greeting, and with a genuine smile began to ask how his day was. The boy slowly turned to him, offering out his own hand, and then smiled as if God himself had answered his prayers, that someone was finally there to show what love really meant.

I felt a tear form then slowly roll down my cheek. This act of humanity had touched my heart and I began to choke up. I walked away from the group towards an area where no one was hanging out and began to cry.

I felt the sadness these mentally ill kids had, yearning for that desire to feel loved like any other child with a Mom and Dad. I felt the anger and frustration, asking why God, why do these children don’t have what I have, having blessings with a fair amount of abundance?

Yet in all of this, I felt the love that the kids were getting from us. Simple acts of kindness such as a hug, a smile, or at least an effort to somehow show genuine care, gave these children a glimpse of the hope they were all missing from their lives. Someone who felt them, nderstood their problems, and loved them no matter who they were. We were all told on this World Youth Day, to ‘Go forth and make Disciples of all Nations’, and our group did so, speaking the God’s universal language.

I returned to my group after gaining a little bit of composure, joining them on a small tour of the orphanage. I looked over to Anh Thinh who had another orphan by his side, like a long lost little sibling.

I admired his unconditional love for whoever he met, not caring that he did not really know this person,

nor perhaps see them again, yet through his actions, showed love for the orphan next to him as he walked the facility grounds.

“Who is that?” Anh Thinh asked the orphan as he pointed at a painting.

“E Deus..... ele e amor” the orphan whispered in Portuguese. “It’s God.....He is love” I left the group once more to cry privately somewhere in the orphanage. In this entire city, through all its filth, its poverty, its horrible smell, I witnessed God’s language working through my friend.

With compassion, we all acknowledge that God exists by emulating his calling for all of us to serve others, particularly the weak like these orphaned children. In doing so we have to love one another through our actions, instead of just merely saying so in words.

We prove it in our actions, through our hands and feet, our heart, mind, body, and soul in which we are blessed with. We are never always perfect, having our own dark moments, only to realize through love, that there is always hope for our future, hope in someone else’s future, and hope for the coming of God’s future.

If someone were to ask what proves God’s existence, he exists through Faith, Hope, and Love, in plain sight of our lives, when we notice through what we do in our lives. This is what love really means.

“Hey Tuan....you okay?” A voice asked me from behind.

It was Anh Thinh, having noticed that I was not with the rest of the group.

“I’m okay, just having some allergies” I lied, in an attempt to cover up the fact that I spent most of my time crying at this orphanage.

“You know, it’s okay to cry, everybody will understand,” He said as if he knew I was crying.

After all, even though I was wearing shades, I didn’t really wipe the tears off my cheeks, causing my t-shirt to become a mess.

“Crying is just one way to show that you love all of them” Anh Thinh continued.

The trip was an experience of a lifetime. I would recommend to any one that never been  to WYD to save money and time to have this experience. I am glad that I went with my wife. We had so much fun together as well as apart. The greatest memories for me were seeing the pope in person and making friends and sharing our beliefs with people from different countries.

s I was sitting on the bus ride leaving Sao Paolo and heading to Rio for the start of World Youth Day, I thought to myself “what can I possibly tell people at home about my pilgrimage?” It is so hard to summarize the amazing and faith-filled trip into a few sentences. The only answer I came up with is to tell you it was an experience of a life time and you have to attend one to understand and fully experience it.

I can ony try to relay to you some of the highlights .

Firstly, I have to mention the amazing hospitality of the Brazilian people in general; of the Salesian youth, of Father Rosalvino, and of all the locals in Sao Paolo in particular. We were only in Sao Paolo a week for Missionary Week, but the hospitality, warm welcome, and kindness won over every single pilgrim there. We felt exactly at home in a faraway, foreign country. I remember wanting to take my host family out for Brazilian BBQ one night as a thank you for hosting us the whole week, but the dad insisted that I don’t have to feel obligated because they’re doing this from the coração (from the heart) and nothing else. I don’t think I could do what they did if I was in the same position - hosting a couple of foreigners.

The love and sweetness of the Sao Paolo Salesians and the locals made it so hard for us to leave for Rio that Sunday morning. They are the true representation of God’s words: “love your neighbors as you love yourself.”

Another of the many highlights of this pilgrimage was the opportunity to see Papa Francis live. At first, I was not looking forward to his welcoming mass because I thought it would just be the same as when I see him on TV. But it was not the same, not even

close. After hours and hours of walking, and pushing through people, so that we could be as close to him as possible, I was just too tired to enjoy anything.

Yet, right at the moment I saw him in the descending helicopter, my heart started jumping, and skipping around. People started to yell and scream around me.

I felt a surge of joy and happiness. Tears started rolling down my cheeks. I still don’t understand what happened, but I’m glad I was there to witness his holiness and his blessings. For the rest of the night, my eyes and every else’s were fixed on this little simple figure that seemed very far but yet really close to us. He was simple and humble in his every move.

The same similar feelings of sudden joy and happiness swept over me as I was standing on Corcovado Mountain, staring straight at the statue of Christ the Redeemer. The statue is a national monument of the Catholic people in Brazil. It is also the most famous tourist attraction in the country. The statue is at the very top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio. To me it looks like He is extending His arms welcoming each and every single one of us to join Him on His journey, and that He is also watching over the whole country of Brazil. It is so magnificent that I think I could just

stand there and stare at its beauty all day.

Last but not least, I have to write about the indescribable experience of attending mass with millions of other young Catholics from around the world on that long stretch of Copacabana beach. It was like a big party on the beach filled with music, dancing, celebrating, and meeting new people. Except this party had millions of people who came from around the world and gathered there for one common reason to praise God Our Savior. It was amazing to see how nobody knows anybody there, that none of us could understand a word from one another, but there was still something pulling us closer together. We are very different in many ways, but we all share one thing in common: God the Father, the Creator of all things.

Just thinking about how millions of people gathered together in one place for no other reason but simply to praise the Lord gives me goosebumps.

Go and experience it for yourself, at least once in your lifetime. No word can describe the feeling. The Church is young so let’s keep it that way! World Youth Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland, here we come!

Sau một năm sinh hoạt (niên khóa 2012-1013) cũng tới lúc tất cả các em và các Trưởng tạm chia tay để nghỉ hè – Vacation time …..YES! Đoàn Anrê Dũng Lạc có tổ chức buổi Picnic cho các em vui chơi, ca hát, và Cha Tuyên Úy còn chúc lành cho các em nghỉ hè được an lành trong Chúa.

Một số Trưởng đi huấn luyện Huynh Trưởng cấp 1 và cấp 2 tại NC. Điều vui nhất của các Trưởng là hôm tĩnh tâm của miền tổ chức tại Boca Raton Florida. Lần đầu tiên tất cả các Trưởng của Đoàn đi chung (5 Trưởng + 7 HSTT), ăn uống dzui dzẻ với nhau, đặc biệt là cùng nhau hy sinh và cầu nguyện bên Chúa. Trưởng còn đi biển, đánh banh và cầu lông, và đi Disney World…. để xả “stress“.

Thế rồi mùa hè cũng qua đi, và mùa tựu trường lại trở về. Tất cả các Trưởng và các em lại quây quần bên nhau để bắt đầu Niên Khóa Mới. Đặc Biệt.…Đặc Biệt cho Đoàn Anrê Dũng Lạc.

Ngày khai giảng của Đoàn các em tham gia rất đầy đủ, trang phục chỉnh tề.… làm các Trưởng rất ngạc nhiên, không biết chuyện gì đây? Thì ra hôm đó có gia đình Chị Chủ Tịch Miền đến thăm Đoàn – Trưởng HỒNG ÂN. Anh Đoàn Trưởng đã “bật mí“ cho nên ai ai cũng tươm tất trông thật đáng yêu. Đoàn Anrê Dũng Lạc xin cám ơn Trưởng Hồng Ân rất nhiều! Sự có mặt của Trưởng đã nói lên sự quan tâm của Miền đến Đoàn của chúng em. Xin Anh Cả Giêsu chúc lành cho Gia Đình Trưởng mãi mãi. ùng sự yêu thương, dẫn dắt và tận tình của 25 Huynh Trưởng, 5 Trợ Tá. Đặc biệt với sự nâng đỡ, đồng hành của 3 Trợ Úy & Cha Tuyên Úy và Cha Chánh Xứ. Với ước mơ và khát vọng phục vụ TNTT & Giáo Xứ cũng như các bạn trẻ khắp nơi. Do đó, GX đã tuyển chọn & tài trợ cho một số Anh Chị Em HT tham dự World Youth Day 2013. Đây cũng là niềm vui và vinh dự cho TNTT được đại diện GX tham dự WYD lần này.

Với tất cả những bận rộn, lo lắng của Trường học, công sở, cá nhân … nhưng HT đã cố gắng thu xếp để đến bên Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể qua buổi Tĩnh Tâm với các Đoàn bạn được tổ chức tại Miami. Vì người HT mà không có và không sống với Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể thì không thể nào trao ban và gởi tặng Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể cho các em Đoàn Sinh và những người xung quanh. Để có thể truyền đạt cách lãnh đạo, hướng dẫn các ĐTĐP làm thế nào để quản lý, hướng dẫn các bạn đội viên, là cánh tay nối dài giữa các HT và đội viên. Thì các em đã được tham dự Sa Mạc ĐTĐP 8/2-4/2013 tại Tampa để cùng học hỏi và trao đổi kinh nghiệm với các bạn Đoàn Sinh của các Đoàn bạn trong FL. Tháng 10 là Tháng Mân Côi, nên các Ngành đã khuyến khích các em làm Chuỗi Mân Côi, Bó Hoa Thiêng ( mỗi ngành đều có những phương cách cho các em ĐS làm rất hay, phong phú, đầy ý nghĩa… ) . Ngành Ấu vừa mừng Bổn Mạng cho các em ( Thánh Têrêsa Hài Đồng Giêsu ), cùng những sinh hoạt cho lứa tuổi hồn nhiên và đáng yêu này.

Ngành Thiếu thì có những hoạch định, sinh hoạt cho lứa tuổi này, cùng với sự hướng dẫn của những HT trẻ & tài năng. Ngành Nghĩa là sức sống của Đoàn, với sự hướng dẫn của các HTNS để các em được bên Chúa và sống bên nhau trong những giờ sinh hoạt TNTT và các chương trình ngoại khóa. Ngành Hiệp thì chào đón các thành viên mới qua ngày Tĩnh Huấn cho HS, đồng thời Ngành

Hiệp lại có những chương trình thu hút các em khi dạy về YouCat, và những hoạt động thiện nguyện giúp các em trưởng thành hơn, để cảm nhận cuộc sống ý nghĩa hơn. Đoàn Phêrô & Phaolô cũng mới chào đón 5 HT để cùng cộng tác với Đoàn trong tinh thần phục vụ. Đoàn có 2 HT tham dự SM HLVSC, ước mong Đoàn & Miền & Trung Ương có thêm nhiều HLV để cùng nhau nghiên cứu, giảng dạy, tìm ra những phương pháp thích hợp và hữu hiệu cho tất cả các em trong mọi lứa tuổi của thời đại mới này … Đoàn Phêrô & Phaolô có rất nhiều chương trình hấp dẫn cho HT & Đoàn Sinh qua những ngày Trại, Picnic, Sa Mạc, Tĩnh Tâm, CTT, VTT, Pray & Workship và rất hân hoan chào đón tất cả mọi người ghé thăm Đoàn. You don’t have to Dâng Đêm Alone T

he Dâng Đêm group on FB is a virtual meeting place for youth leaders all over the country wishing to come together to do their nightly offering. Tr. Henry Nguyễn (from the southwest region) initiated the group in June 2011 with hope of building network for HT to come together to pray with and for each other. Tr. Daniel Vu, a member of the group’s “core team,” gives us a glance of the group below: When was it formed?

Dang Dem was initially formed after Cap 2 Nganh Thieu in Mien Tay Nam in 2012 by Tr. Henry Nguyen (he’s also from Mien Tay Nam and deserves full credit for creating the group as this was his idea).

Those who first called in were people who went to Cap 2 that year including friends of those Truong who went (Those that didn’t attend Cap 2 included Tr. Huan from Mien Trung, Tr. Thinh from Dong Nam, and myself from MTB).

Why was it formed?

This group was formed so that Huynh Truong from around Phong Trao would get a chance to pray together over the phone via teleconference every weeknight. It gives a chance to make praying easier especially if you’re the type of person that wants to pray with lots of people from around Phong Trao.

A bit of the story.......

After about two to three weeks (after Cap 2 Nganh Thieu) the only guys who called in were the following: Tr. Henry Nguyen (Mien Tay Nam) Tr. Peter Le (Mien Tay Bac) Tr. Nam Phong Hung Le (Mien Tay Nam) Tr. Huan Phan (Mien Trung)

Tr. Tri Doan (Charles from Mien Tay/Mien Trung) Tr. Thinh Phan (Mien Dong Nam) Me (Tr. Daniel Mien Tay Bac) We eventually formed the core group that called in frequently with on a couple of occasions a few other random HT that called in. However, to make things organized Tr. Peter created a FB group in an effort to recruit people who called in and such, but almost every night it was usually the six guys who called in.

We didn’t have a Facebook group before hence why Tr. Peter created it.

We were going to take a break from calling in because sometimes no one would call in but when DHHS happened, we had a chance to meet each other in person (with the exception of Anh Phong from Mien Tay Nam who could not make it) and pray together in the same location while gathering other HT to pray with us.

From that point on, we kept calling in with the original group, deciding not to take a break while reaching out to others to possibly pray with us every weeknight. This became very easy when the HT Network was created on Facebook where we began to advertise the group out to all the HT that were currently in the group.

That helped to boost the number of people in our Dang Dem facebook group, and for a while, the number of those calling in for Dang Dem increased.

How does it work?

Usually in the mornings or whenever someone has time (whether it’d be a random nice Huynh Truong or a core team member of the Dang Dem group), would head into a Google document and update the

tasks that people sign up for to do that night. Usually it’s only the date of the day, Gospel, prayer intentions, and Rosary mystery that needs to be updated.

Then when the time comes to call in, people dial the number and access code given in the Facebook group around 9PM Pacific Standard Time(10 PM Mountain Time, 11PM Midwest Time, 12AM Eastern Time) As people call in, they also access the document so that they can sign up for any assignment that they like to do. This usually takes 5-15 minutes depending on when people call in. After all assignments are taken, Dang Dem starts. When Dang Dem is finished, people usually hang up to go sleep/whatever they’re doing, or they hangout over the phone to chat.

Usually only 10 Kinh is done out of the sake of time, but on special nights such as #PrayforPeaceinSyria, we did an entire Rosary.

While Dang Dem usually takes place on weeknights, some Truong like to call in with a few others during the weekend.

How is the progress so far?

On average, we have 6-8 people from around Phong Trao who call in every weeknight. It’s a given that whoever calls in will most likely meet a core team member (or all of them depending on availability) (Again, the core team guys are

Tr. Phong (Tay Nam) Tr. Tri Doan (Charles Mien Tay/Trung) Tr. Huan (Trung) Tr. Peter (Tay Bac) Tr. Daniel (Tay Bac) Tr. Thinh (Dong Nam) ) These are the guys that call in frequently when not busy. The number of active members is approximately 20 but not all call in every night.

While this group is exclusively Huynh Truong, we do invite certain people such as Hiep Si TT who want to complete their post camp assignments and such, but we do not prohibit anyone from calling into the group.

As of this month, we’re doing what’s called Theme Nights where when you sign up for a task, you write down a name or something that’s related to the theme of the night (for example if the theme night was Disney, you sign up for a task as a Mickey Mouse or a certain character from a Disney movie) That’s basically it about Dang Dem. We encourage all who haven’t called in yet to definitely give it a try as you connect with other HT from around Phong Trao, praying together, and having fun!
