8 IN MY CORNER

Spring has become my REAL New Year and a reason to purge By LaTria Garnigan

W

hile January is the beginning of the year, the spring is known to bring about a renewed spirit. Personally, I’m using this spring as my actual New Year. It’s as if the beginning of the year was just a trial run — a hold-over from last year. I recently heard that the pressure of beginning to accomplish your goals promptly on Jan. 1 isn’t necessarily reasonable or even crucial. As long as you have a goal in mind, does it matter if you build in some cushion to get going? I don’t know about you, but this is my current way of thinking. It doesn’t hurt that along with a spiritual and personal renewal, nature begins its change with outside foliage in the spring. Flowers begin to bloom, trees regain their leaves and the grass gets a bit greener. This entices us to venture outside more and start to finally thaw out from our winter doldrums. And I think we all can agree that we DESERVE a nice spring after the last few months. Perhaps the most important change that comes about is spring cleaning. It’s not just a saying, it is a feeling that does tend to take hold of you during this time. There is something about the shedding of winter clothes that effortlessly translates into the shedding of items you no longer need around your home. We’re packing away those bulky sweaters and thinking, “will I wear this one next year?” And more often

8

than not a donate pile will start to build during this time. With March 20 being the first day of spring, it could be time to start taking inventory of ways you can spruce up around the house. *** It doesn’t begin and end with cleaning, you may be thinking of ways to change up your home, in general, this season. Maybe you’ll remove a door from the closet, paint a wall or two or perhaps you’ll take on a more extensive home project. Whatever you decide to do, we may have some inspiration for you on the pages that follow. This March issue is dedicated to all things home and we have plenty to get your creative ideas flowing. There are two different features with interior designers and home professionals giving advice that any design novice should know. Home envy will become real when you see the top homes sold in Cobb last year. If sprucing up your backyard is a priority, a fire pit might be attractive to you. Tackling an extensive renovation like one Marietta couple could be the inspiration you need to get started in your own home. And you’ll also catch up with local pros featured on Flip or Flop. No matter where you are on your homeownership journey, I hope you’ll find this content beneficial to your specific needs.

WORTH WATCHING If you’re looking to head to the movies this month or want to know what’s new on television — here’s your guide. Enjoy! By LaTria Garnigan

A Royal Romance Parisa Fitz-Henley (“Jessica Jones”) and Murray Fraser (“The Loch”) have been cast in the title roles for the Lifetime feature “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance.” The movie will premiere this spring. Chronicling the courtship and love story between a beloved prince and his new fiancée, the film will examine the history of Prince Harry (Fraser) and Meghan Markle (Fitz-Henley) from the moment they met after being set up by friends, through their initial courtship when they were able to keep their romance under wraps, and ultimately the intense global media attention surrounding their relationship and Meghan’s life as a divorced American actress.

From visionary director Ava DuVernay comes Disney’s “A Wrinkle in Time,” an epic adventure based on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light. Cast: Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Pena and introducing Storm Reid with Zach Galifianakis and Chris Pine. “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” March 8 on Netflix New York City private investigator Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is beginning to put her life back together after murdering her tormenter, Kilgrave. Now known throughout the city as a super-powered killer, a new case makes her reluctantly confront who she really is while digging deeper into her past to explore the reasons why. Make sure to catch up on season 1, while you’re counting down the days to binge season 2.

Legal Eagles “Grace vs Abrams” March 29, 10 p.m. on A&E

Two of the country’s best-known legal analysts — Nancy Grace and Dan Abrams — are joining forces to debate infamous crimes and legal cases in A&E Network’s new original series, “Grace vs. Abrams.” Known for their epic battles on their “Good Morning America” segments, “Grace vs. Abrams” will see the two attorneys break down cases, providing their unique legal perspectives and compelling and opposing points of view on crimes and trials that captured the country’s attention. Each episode they will break down the case, feature key players from the cases as well as never-before-heard from players, both in-studio and by remote.

16 ‘Barry’ “Barry” March 25, 10:30 p.m. on HBO

The globe-spanning conflict between

‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ otherworldly monsters of mass

“Barry” is a dark comedy starring Bill Hader as a depressed, low-rent hitman from the Midwest. Lonely and dissatisfied in his life, he reluctantly travels to Los Angeles to execute a hit on an aspiring actor. Barry follows his “mark” into an acting class and ends up finding an accepting community in a group of eager hopefuls within the LA theater scene. He wants to start a new life as an actor, but his criminal past won’t let him walk away – can he find a way to balance both worlds? The eight-episode series also stars Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Glenn Fleshler, Anthony Carrigan and Henry Winkler.

destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in “Pacific Rim Uprising.” John Boyega (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)-who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction. ‘Tomb Raider’ Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer

who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. An exhilarating mix of dark comedy, white-knuckle action and dramatic intrigue, “Gringo” joy rides into Mexico, where mild-mannered businessman Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) finds himself at the mercy of backstabbing business colleagues back home, local drug lords and a morally conflicted black-ops mercenary. Crossing the line from law-abiding citizen to wanted criminal, Harold battles to survive his increasingly dangerous situation in ways that raise the question: Is he out of his depth — or two steps ahead? dynamic duo

Young, up-and-coming interior designers, Forbes + Masters, talk about their style and take on all things home

T

avia Forbes and Monet Masters were each carving their own lane in the interior design world. They initially met on a commercial project, where Monet admits that it wasn’t going in her favor and the owners brought in Tavia to more or less take over the project. “After that initial meeting, I contacted her the next day,” says Monet. “I researched her, looked up her work and thought she was really cool. I thought it would be a great business relationship.” Once the duo got to know each other, they realized they had more in common and after three years it made more sense to merge their businesses — with a loving nudge, of course. “My mentor recommended I merge because in interior design there’s so much work and each of us were doing work that entire firms do,” says Tavia. “And it’s good to have someone to work with and another set of eyes.” If you haven’t heard of this design team, you’ll get a chance to get up-close-and-personal with them at the American Craft Show, where they will be participants in the Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft event. Until then, get to know them a bit more.

19 How would you describe your overall approach to design? Do you have certain aesthetics as designers that you go for? Monet: It’s broken into three — 1. Existing furniture: an iconic piece a client purchased that needs to be incorporated; 2. Inspiration from the client; and 3. Initiative to seek new art, fabrics, new wallpapers — if we know its the hottest thing and perfect aesthetic then we already have it for our clients Tavia: Both are eclectic. We love eclectic spaces that mix time periods, textiles, and the juxtaposition of pieces. We do encourage (clients) to have eclectic space, but can match our likes with our clients and give them an elevated version of what they’re thinking. I’ve noticed a lot of boldness, with wall stencils and wallpaper in your designs. How do you get your clients to see the overall vision? Both: The company itself is growing in a sense of the type of clientele that are becoming more interested with our firm. But for a long time we would get a lot of clients who approached us with budgets a little below what they should have, so it caused us to be very creative. We want it to look like a designer was here no matter the budget, so that prompted us to do designs a certain way. In the instance with the eyes, the client had plenty funds but considering her quirky style we couldn’t find anything edgy enough so we did it ourselves — she loved the idea. For the craft show, you’re participating in the Make Room segment where you’ll design a vignette in the chosen color scheme: deep teal. Can you talk about how you’re going to incorporate that color in your project? Both: We love teal — we’ve been really drawn to dark moody colors and rooms. We are still building, but we’re very excited about the art pieces we go to select and are looking to create a really polished and eclectic space. One of the favorite spaces we like to create are rooms that that have no specific purpose but

look good and you can do a lot of different things with them. So we want the space to look creative; we’re stretching our imaginations. Lastly, what are some tips for someone who has never worked with an interior designer before, but is thinking about changing up an aspect of their home? What should they know before diving in? 1. Tell them to do a little research on the process outside of HGTV, and have a few questions for the designer. Because every designer works differently and it’s important to know your designer or project will be handled differently from what you’ve seen or heard of. 2. Actually try and develop a budget for yourself. It’s as simple as picking a store online and dropping random items in a cart. Put them together that way you can come up with a cost for a room. The designer will help through the process because it is a luxury and then you’ll be able to manage your budget along with the designer cost. 3. Select images that demonstrate the look and style you want in your space because a lot of people have their own idea of traditional, contemporary and modern and it gives the designer ways to play off that style and helps you trust the designer.

ROOM CHANGERS Artists and home design professionals give tips on transforming a space

By LaTria Garnigan Photography by Katherine Frye

I

f you’ve ever wanted to hear home tips from the experts, Markay Gallery helped interested residents do just that. Recently, the downtown Marietta gallery held its first Luminaries of Art & Design panel featuring five interior design, home building, and art professionals. The goal of the intimate gathering was to share information from the experts for the purposes of helping homeowners learn to beautify, simplify and redefine their homes. Christen Fountain, the gallery’s sales and marketing coordinator hosted the panel, which featured insight from owner Amber Markay Byrd. Featured speakers were: Chris Lafaive, of Rezide Properties; Cassandra Buckalew, of Cassandra Buckalew Interiors; Lori May, of Lori May Interiors and artists Stacy Milburn and Mary Jane Huegel. Check out their tips for refreshing your space.

20

Chris Lafaive Rezide Properties Chris, whose business is primarily in the downtown Woodstock area, spoke on innovative home designs saying high-density is the wave of the future. Future homeowners should get used to not having large front and backyards, and look toward a more downtown living situation. Also on the horizon for home design are C-shaped homes that make way for a private courtyard — helpful when there isn’t sufficient yard space. To maximize space when moving from an expansive estate to a downtown spot, homeowners should create smart storage. Chris said focusing the master on the

main and downsizing items in the home are key. “I try to talk with clients on bringing only things with sentimental value with them,” he said.

Cassandra Buckalew Cassandra Buckalew Interiors Working in residential and commercial interior design, Cassandra said budgets are one of the most important first steps clients need to take. For residential, it’s important to set a budget so clients can get a grasp on what needs to stay and what they can acquire for the design. And in commercial spaces, every decision can have a financial impact. Depending on what design changes are done, they can immediately impact how customers react to a space.

Lori May Lori May Interiors Life changes can dictate how a homeowner goes about redefining a space, according to Lori. With her clients, it’s all about function first. She stressed changing out artwork and textiles to create a completely different room. These are changes homeowners can even do seasonally. As for design, Lori said an emphasis on client-driven design is the biggest trend. “The trend to me is what my client wants,” she said. “It’s about what you all want in your homes.” By valuing and listening to clients, Lori said designers can help shape a client’s true style while also keeping the integrity of their home.

When discussing popular colors, she said neutrals were still the way to go. But she just so happened to have a color wheel in tow and gave an expert lesson on color combinations. Cassandra urged the guests not to be afraid of color. One tip is to use varying shades of the same color to help give the space a bit more distinction.

HOW DO YOU GET A REHAB LOAN? Many lenders won’t approve a loan for a home in need of major repairs. Luckily, there is a special rehab loan backed by the federal government that allows you to finance the purchase of the house and the renovation costs into one loan. The down payment for this program can be as little as 3.5% of the total loan value. The process is as follows: 1) Get Loan Approval 2) Secure a House 3) Find Contractors 4) Get Bids 5) Close The Loan 6) Complete Repairs 7) Move in! Contact Nic for further details!

22 Mary Jane Huegel Artist

Amber Markay Byrd Markay Gallery

Coming from an artist family, Mary Jane’s main priority is to bring beauty into people’s’ lives and to paint in the spirit of love. She primarily uses oils in her work and said homeowners can make any space a statement space by featuring art. “You can hang art everywhere,” said Mary Jane. Paintings can speak to any style and purpose of a room. If a homeowner wants to invoke the feeling of tranquility, there’s a piece of art for that. Same goes for if they want to bring love and joy into a space. Art, said Mary Jane, can speak to all emotions.

Amber was once an assistant to Lori and has a keen eye for design and art. Markay Gallery is one of the few spaces where every single piece in-house is artist made. Everything from the desk, tables and chairs, artwork, stair railing and more. By housing all of this work, it gives Amber a unique chance to meet artists from all over, whose work many homeowners may have never heard of before, she said. A gallery such as this is a great place for inspiration for design and can help homeowners and designers find pieces that are truly artistic.

Stacy Milburn Artist Stacy has carved out a unique place for herself in the art world. She is a mirror artist and has created pieces that have been used as backsplashes, fireplace elements and as a way to add height to a room. She urges homeowners not to be afraid of mirrors as artistic and design pieces for their homes. “It’s a beautiful way to double the light,” said Stacy. In the piece shown, Stacy displays an example of mirror photography — another way to add an artistic flair to any space. The process in which she achieves the look gives a nostalgic tone to any mirrored surface. n

23 Why Do I Hear, But Not Understand? Cambridge University Study Reveals Key Answer is now being released from Optimal Hearing Systems that can be programmed to bypass the dead cells. As a result, the patient’s usable hearing cells receive amplification, thereby improving speech understanding in noise.

Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identification of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the fitting of hearing aids. This research reveals that amplifying dead cells is a mistake which will result in poorer speech understanding in noise. A new type of digitally programmable microcircuit

trend spotting Using trendy ‘Ultra Violet’ hue in decor Wire reports

When the Pantone Color Institute recently announced its color of the year for 2018, the vibrant “Ultra Violet,” it might have seemed a natural fit for fashion and cosmetics. “Ultra Violet is a color that’s almost like a neutral in fashion now,” says New York-based interior designer Brett Beldock. “Every newscaster you see is wearing a purple tie.” But this rich violet is more challenging to use well in home decorating. It can easily overpower a room, and needs to be paired carefully with other shades. We’ve ask Beldock and two other interior designers — Abbe Fenimore, founder of the Dallas-based design firm Studio Ten 25, and Jessica McClendon, founder of the Los Angeles-based design firm Glamour Nest — for advice on bringing his trendy, bold color into home decor in ways that won’t quickly go out of style.

BEST FOR BEDROOMS McClendon says violet can bring a touch of luxury to bedrooms, especially when used sparingly in rich upholstery fabrics. “Go with a deeper or dustier shade for a more mature look or brighter for a playful, younger vibe,” she says. “If you want a softer, more feminine feel, opt for a less saturated or paler tone.” One key is choosing the right fabric: “If you are thinking about using purple on an upholstered item, opt for fabrics rich in texture or feel,” McClendon says. “Think silk, velvet, chenille, textured woven or even an interesting print. I’m not a fan of just plain solid purple twill cotton because it ends up feeling flat and looking not high-quality.” Along with fabrics, Fenimore likes using violet for accessories in the bedroom “for a rich and sophisticated feel. Amethyst accents like lamps, picture frames or small accessories stacked on books work well,” she says.

CAREFUL PAIRINGS Ultra Violet “can be bold and take over a room quickly if it’s not balanced correctly,” says Fenimore. So use it as a supporting player only. Choose color combinations that make Ultra Violet feel like a part of the room, instead of taking over, she says. Good partners might be celadon green, lavender and soft pink. That palette, with a touch of Ultra Violet, would be beautiful in a modern wallpaper used in a small space like a powder room. Beldock loves violet with white, heather gray, khaki, olive or camel.

And a mix of violet, chocolate brown and white, she says, would have a smartly retro 1970s feel that could look very fresh today. One warning about color pairings: “I would avoid mixing the color with red,” says Fenimore. “Together, the two shades will quickly take over a room and create an environment with too much anxiety.”

BE WARY OF WALLS If you’re considering painting your walls violet, Beldock suggests testing a large swatch first. McClendon agrees: “Make sure you look at large samples of the paint before committing. Purple is a hard color, and it straddles a fine line between super-luxurious and cheap. You have to be really thoughtful when choosing a purple paint color.” Look at the samples in different lights and in different parts of the room. Two ways to moderate violet’s impact on walls: Use it only on a single accent wall, Beldock suggests, or bring it in as part of a wallpaper pattern. In her own wall covering designs, she has used violet as a solid backdrop covered with images rendered in crisp white, or as a playful accent over a simple white background.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Ultra Violet a statement color, McClendon says. So even though it’s popular right now, “don’t commit to painting a room or a large piece of furniture unless it works for your true style.” But if you love it, go all in. “I’ve seen rooms that were all purple and amazing,” she says. “Again, it goes back to what your true style is and how you want your space to feel.” n

Outdoor Living Firepit provides a life-changing landscape for this Marietta family By Stacey L. Evans Photography by Erin Gray Cantrell

Jean Ann and Steven Murphy find many uses for their outdoor space — from relaxing with a glass of wine to roasting marshmallows with their kids — the space is a haven for activity. Right: Matthew Murphy enjoys roasting marshmallows by the firepit.

onding with the kids while roasting marshmallows over a fire pit. Pickup football games on a wide open, grassy space. Unwinding with a glass of wine in a relaxing outdoor retreat. And celebrating a Dawgs win with friends around a blazing fire on a cool fall night. These are the moments that fill the lives of Jean Ann and Steven Murphy since renovating the backyard of their Marietta home in August 2016. “When we moved into this house, there was a forest in the back and the land was uneven,” Jean Ann said. “There was a lot of space, but we were not able to use very well.” So they called Paradigm Landscape to design an outdoor living space that would bring fulfillment to their outdoorsy natures. “The existing landscape did not serve their family’s needs. It was overgrown with trees, had too much shade, no level playing area for the boys and next to no parking space for guests,” said Todd Angel, owner of Paradigm Landscape. First, the landscape team cleared part of the land to increase sunlight and air circulation and then provided grading to level an open play space for the children. They added a variety of plants to enhance the aesthetic value as well as provide shade and privacy. The driveway was also replaced, and a retaining wall created a second tier in which they placed a large fire pit area, with room for 10-12 people to gather. The fire pit area also allows the adults to have some privacy while the kids play below. “It feels like a separate space,” Jean Ann said. The couple chose a handcrafted stainless steel fire pit from S&S Firepits, a Hapeville company that uses recycled and repurposed materials in their custom-made creations.

“We love that they are unique and one of kind, and we also love the rustic look,” Jean Ann said. “It makes for a nice decoration when the weather is too hot for fires!” In addition, a grill grate can be placed on top of the pit to cook directly over the fire. “Typically, a landscape is thought of as a seasonal item,” Todd said. “Adding a fire pit gives you the opportunity to use your property all year. Furthermore, with kids, who doesn’t like roasting marshmallows and telling camp fire stories? It’s a time for families to disconnect from a busy life and share in quality, safe, family fun.” The backyard has indeed become the Murphy family’s favorite place to be. The new outdoor space lives up to Paradigm’s motto of creating “life-changing landscapes,” Jean Ann said. “It’s truly changed how we use our house. We love that our home feels like a retreat. It’s a place we can enjoy nature and family time. Also, we have more people over now because we love being able to provide a space to create a community with our friends and family,” she said. The Murphys have an open-door policy with the friends of their boys, ages 6 and 9. “The more the merrier,” Jean Ann said. “They love playing on their ‘football field’ and enjoying their ‘s’mores pit.’ They will run around and have water-gun fights. We have their birthday parties there and they have so much fun.” Outdoor living spaces open up the opportunity to have experiences you can’t get inside the home, Todd said.

“Maybe it’s the sound of birds, maybe it’s watching the kids play ball, maybe a water feature sound in the background.” Whatever the size of the project — a full renovation with covered pool cabanas or simply adding a fire pit — what’s important is providing a space that encourages spending time outdoors and brings joy to your life, Todd said. “I do what I do, and our Steven and Jean Ann Murphy with their company does what it does sons, Matthew and Jonathan. to positively impact our clients in a way that truly changes their lives,” Todd said. “The idea of those boys having the space they need to run and play, to climb on the boulders and to hang out with their friends and family at the fire pit is what I love most. Anyone can pick the perfect plant or put in a great irrigation system. I care far more about the use of the space and the memories created. As a designer I try and place myself in their family, how will we use this space, how will we grow in the space, what will be provided to us here. That is what we call the ‘Paradigm’ shift of landscape design.” — more on page 32

32 Tips from Todd: Steps to redesigning your backyard •

First, research! Take advantage of many online resources to get ideas. • Determine your need — ask questions such as who is going to use this space, when and how? • Make a list of what features are must-haves, and which ones are wants. That will help dictate the size of the project, and eventually a budget. • If your project is DIY, reach out to local vendors for help and to review material options. If the project is larger than you can take on, network with friends to find a reliable design/build team. • Finally, consider what the space’s second function could be. It’s nice to create a space that serves a dual Todd Angel role in your landscape. In the winter it’s a fire pit patio, but in the summer it can be transformed into an area with a table and chairs or a hammock. We have built concrete play courts for families with small kids to ride bikes and play, then later converted the space to covered adult spaces with a hot tub and TV.

Have a small budget? It’s simple to create a space to enjoy the outdoors, even on a tight budget, Todd says. “You just have to get creative!” Fire pits are a great option because you don’t have to spend too much to get the essentials. Todd prefers portable, heavy-duty fire pits built from recycled propane tanks, like the one installed at the Murphys’ home. “It provides a purpose for an old tank and it offers a change in material from a typical stone or rock fire pit,” Todd says. “I like details in the landscape, and an old, custom-made fire pit has a story to tell.” What’s more, a recycled tank typically cost less than a stone fire pit, and its portability makes it easy to transform the patio in summer months when a fire isn’t needed. “If you’re a DIY-type person you could create a nice space with a fire pit for $500 to $1,500 that will last for years,” Todd said.

Are you a DIYer who needs a little guidance? Paradigm offers a $149 “Clipboard Concept” to aid clients who are addressing a small space. A landscape designer will sketch a design and provide a shopping list of plant material and direction on where to install it. “Hiring a landscape designer is paramount to a well thought out landscape,” Todd said. “It’s not often that clients, on any level, do the entire project at one time, and so having a well thought out master plan is key. It gives you something to work towards. Most of our master residential plans are implemented over years.” n

Modern Living ‘Good bones’ transformed this Marietta ranch-style home into a stylish sanctuary By Amanda Swartwood Photography by Erin Gray Cantrell & submitted before

I

n 2009, as Tiffany Hendryx searched for the perfect home in the perfect neighborhood at the perfect price, she drove by what she calls, “a flesh-colored airplane hangar,” several times before looking inside.

“I was having a tough time finding exactly what I was looking for,” Tiffany remembers. “The outside wasn’t my preference, but the inside was absolutely lovely. I could tell it had good bones; it was livable and functional. Updating was simply a matter of style, I could see great potential.” Tiffany sent a picture of the outside of the house to an architect friend asking what he envisioned. To her surprise, he sent back a beautiful sketch with massive windows and an open floor plan. So, now with the spark of hope, the excitement of potential, and the confidence of location and price, Tiffany took a leap of faith and began her home remodel journey.

36 It wasn’t a quick process, however, as Tiffany lived in the house for five years before beginning the remodel. During that time, she began dating and ultimately married, Marietta native, Jess Taylor, who shared her passion to remodel. Tiffany and Jess spent months combing through magazines and frequenting home tours for inspiration and ideas to create their “forever style.”

“The house was functional but very closed off,” she says. “We really wanted to open the floor plan, get rid of the beige walls, and make it more modern. Our goal was to bring out the best in the house; to make it its highest self.” Once they agreed on a style, the couple worked with structural engineers and an architect to bring the remodel to life in the fall of 2014. Inspired by California mid-century modern ranch homes, Tiffany and Jeff selected kitchen cabinets from Ikea with custom doors from California and adorned spaces with modern light fixtures. Tiffany’s favorite part of the renovation may be their boldest decision — painting the outside of the fireplace orange. — more on page 38

38 “Painting the fireplace makes it look like a sculpture,” Tiffany says. “Orange is such a vibrant, happy color and seems to really bring the house to life.” The couple advises keeping an open mind throughout the process. “The architect suggested flipping the kitchen and dining room which I thought would be difficult,” Jeff says. “It wasn’t nearly the hassle we thought it would be and now the kitchen is so open to everything; it’s become my favorite part.” Tiffany adds, “Letting go opens opportunity, so be open to ideas that pop up once the process has started.” After eight months of construction (three of which were spent in the basement with three kids and a new puppy during the kitchen remodel) the bulk of the renovations were complete. “We’ve been astonished at the number of people who stop by to let us know how amazed they are with the transformation of the house and how great they think it looks,” Tiffany says. Though it had its difficult times, the couple says the accomplishment of bringing their vision to life is extremely satisfying. They offer this advice for future home remodelers: “Be brave; look for what inspires you and assume it can happen until someone tells you otherwise.” n

nita and Ken Corsini have been remaking houses throughout Atlanta and its suburbs for years, including Cherokee and Cobb counties. From their base in Woodstock where they live and operate their business Red Barn Homes, the work they have done in the area of flipping — renovating and reselling — more than 600 houses gained them national attention and their own television show on HGTV, “Flip or Flop Atlanta.” So far, the couple has filmed one 13-episode season and are in the midst of filming a second season. The show is one of several spinoffs from the popular original Southern California-based “Flip or Flop.” “The success of HGTV’s original ‘Flip or Flop’ and ‘Flip or Flop Vegas’ set the stage for ‘Flip or Flop Atlanta,’” said John Feld, senior vice president of programming for HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country. — more on page 42

42 The Atlanta housing market is “totally different” from other cities featured on “Flip or Flop” shows, Anita Corsini said. “Atlanta has some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country. We take pride in making it a little more beautiful with each house we flip.” The Corsinis met in their junior year of college at the University of Georgia and after years of working in other fields with their respective degrees, decided to “pursue their passion.” “In my first five years out of college I was in insurance but always wanted to be in real estate,” Ken Corsini said. “Once I graduated I was listening to real estate courses going back and forth to work knowing somehow that’s where I wanted to be. After five years of being in a corporation, I quit my job and Anita was a teacher at the time and a year later quit her job and became a real estate agent. We both quit what we were doing to really pursue what we love.” Now a national television audience gets to share in that love. How long each house-flipping project takes depends on the size and the work involved. The projects can range from three weeks to two months, Ken Corsini said. The pair has found that many of the projects can be extensive — a century-year-old house can cost $100,000 to rehabilitate.

They’ve also bought houses with unusual items from previous owners, including preserved animals and mannequin parts. The couple commonly finds insects, old magazines, mold and “very odd smells,” Anita Corsini said. “It’s pretty gross.” Being on television has drawn more attention to their business, Ken Corsini said, but it hasn’t affected the way they do business. “It is a lot to juggle, but it’s a lot of fun,” Anita Corsini said. “It certainly adds. It’s not like anything from our normal work habits, daily lives have changed, you’re just adding filming on top of that — which is adding a very thick layer. But it’s a very fun layer. So, we’re learning to juggle things in a different way. We were always juggling things.” The second season of “Flip or Flop Atlanta,” should wrap production in May, with the new season starting in August. Atlanta’s city center has provided both business for Red Barn Homes and fodder for the program. “There’s a real big push out there to revitalize in-town neighborhoods, which was previously stagnant for years, especially during the downturn,” Ken Corsini said. “But now, you’ve got a lot of young professionals that want to get back in town and not have these long commutes. So, there’s a lot of in-town neighborhoods with really old housing stock — we’re doing one that’s over 100 years old right now. Because of that, that’s making our rehabs a much bigger process.” In the second season of “Flip or Flop Atlanta,” viewers will see some pretty extensive renovations, Anita Corsini said. “Because of the inventory selection that’s out there, the houses we’re picking up are way more distressed than typical. So, on our show, you’ll see much bigger rehabs just because the inventory that’s out there is very severely distressed.” Even with the success of their show, the Corsinis remain grounded and love their lives in Cherokee County. “We love Woodstock because we love the people first,” Anita Corsini said. “We love the community and the way everyone works together.” “It has a small town feel. Schools are good and the community is tight. It’s a great place to raise a family,” Ken Corsini said. The home where the couple lives with their three children, Naomi, 10, and twins, Rocco and Kayla, 7, sits on 14 acres with a private lake. The home has 12 different levels, according to HGTV. n

The following list reveals the most common improvements the Corsinis make while flipping houses in Atlanta and its suburbs: Kitchen upgrades - Cabinets (new or repainted with new doors & hardware) - Granite or quartz countertops - Backsplash - Plumbing - Light fixtures - Layout or configuration Bathroom upgrades - New or repainted vanity - Plumbing - Light fixtures

- Shower flooring and tile Flooring upgrades - New or refinished hardwood flooring - Laminates Paint upgrades - Fresh coat of paint with updated colors Exterior upgrades - Front door - Shutters - Landscaping - Siding

magine running errands in Kennesaw, or strolling downtown or through a park when suddenly you come across a piece of artwork that advertises itself as free and encourages you to take it. Sounds pretty rare, right? Well not if Kim Meacham and Vision Bear have anything to do with it. The two are donating their artwork to start a new art movement in Kennesaw called Free Art Friday. It’s an international project where local artists donate pieces to fellow residents by way of a scavenger hunt.

CL MARCH 2018 45 45

Meacham explained that artists should post a picture of the artwork that they will “hide” along with a clue as to where it is and tag the post #fafkennesaw or #freeartfridaykennesaw. She said this is an initiative of the Kennesaw Art and Culture Commission, and that Free Art Friday also exists in Atlanta, and other areas in Georgia. Meacham would like to invite any and all artists to participate, from beginners to masters. “The more the merrier,” she said. “They could be crafters; any kind of art. Vision Bear and I both happen to be painters.”

2/12/2018 11:50:19 AM

46 Meacham and Vision Bear own the art studio Ehecatl Art in the Artisan Resource Center in Marietta. The artwork they produce and teach students is very spiritual. Vision Bear is Mexican and Mayan and has developed the Ehecatl technique of painting. “It’s based on the idea that being native, we do things purposefully,” he said. “It has to have a purpose so it makes sense to us all. It’s a spiritual message that reaches your soul.” “It’s been instrumental over the years to help people navigate through their life.” The method of creating these paintings requires a ceremony. Raw canvas is submerged in water and once it is soaked, it gets curled up into a ball. “It represents the planet, the Earth” Vision Bear said. “We say a prayer, we are meditating on the process of water flowing through us, through the planet and bringing life up from the ground.” Once the canvas is dry, it is unfurled and stretched. The remaining water lines are what the artists map out and begin to paint. — more on page 47

47 Vision Bear said the painting process can take weeks, months or even years because the painting is reflective of each individual artist and of their lives. “They are transitioning each time they work on it,” he said. “They come back sometimes after one class and suddenly felt that it changed, but in fact, they changed. They have evolved.” He said a lot of the paintings bear icons that resemble issues the artist is having. The process said Vision Bear, and the end result is both healing and soothing. He was drawn to art early in life, taking bits of charcoal and sketching on cardboard when he was 4 or 5. It took him awhile to find his purpose, however. Meacham has been painting since 2003. “Kim was at first a little reticent about painting, but once she got into it, she took off,” Vision Bear said. “She was able to use the process to grow herself.” Indeed, Meacham gained the confidence to start her own business, KRM Solutions Group, where she says she is a grant and proposal writer by day and a painter by night. n

ore than just a place to catch the Braves during spring and summer, The Battery is a destination itself. One of the main attractions is the dining options. A new addition to the roster is The El Felix, a Tex-Mex spot from restaurateur, Ford Fry. “We were really conscious not to make dishes too “chefy” or alter their essence,” says chef Kevin Maxey. “We unashamedly use American cheese and dried chili powder even when fresh is available because that is part of the soul of Tex-Mex cuisine.” During my meal, I had my choice of eight different kinds of margaritas. A blood orange margarita was calling my name, but The Casa margarita or The ATL, made with a jalapeno cilantro syrup sounded equally appealing. If margaritas aren’t your thing, they riff on other cocktails as well. A Moscow Mule gets a Tex-Mex spin, swapping vodka for Mezcal. There’s also a Tequila y Tonic. I’ve had plenty of cheese dip in my life, but never one with brisket. It’s something only available at The Battery location. They call it “Compuesto” and it comes with a generous scoop of guacamole sitting atop the dip. Balance out that rich starter with the shrimp and octopus cocktail. The fried tostada chips served with it support the large, perfectly cooked seafood pieces well. I eyed the house salad as the avocado, pickled onions and tortilla strips along with a creamy oregano dressing would be a healthy follow-up to the preceding brisket cheese dip. But alas, my stomach had different ideas. I can never resist a mole sauce (a slightly sweet, slightly spicy chocolate-based sauce). It comes on the chicken enchiladas. If that’s out of your comfort zone, go for the chicken

verde, with a slightly tangy green sauce. They are both on the lunch combo menu and you can pair them with a soup or salad. For a heartier meal, order the El Felix’s Fajitas, served with house made tortillas. Choose from bacon wrapped shrimp or NC Catfish or for more mainstream fillings, there’s chicken and steak. Park in the red lot — which is free for four hours if there is no event that day — and The El Felix is just a few short steps away. The colorful decor and bright space make for a cheery diversion from office life. Garage-style windows line the walls, letting in light to the spacious restaurant and on the enclosed patio. The glass doors roll up, allowing the El Felix to serve cold drinks right out of their customized vintage truck to customers on the warm days ahead. The Battery allows for open containers, so you can get your drink to go.

30-MINUTE MX4 WORKOUT BECOMING THE RAVE OF COBB BY AMANDA SWARTWOOD PHOTOS COURTESY OF WORKOUT ANYTIME MARIETTA

N

o doubt time is precious these days. Once we send our kids to school the daily grind begins: running errands, cleaning house, closing deals, facilitating conference calls, attending business meetings, juggling family events with after work obligations and feeding everyone somewhere in between. With schedules like this, finding time for one’s health and wellbeing can be difficult. MX4 fitness classes at Workout Anytime in Marietta are revolutionizing the way we exercise and all it takes is a little motivation and 30 minutes, three to four days a week. What is MX4? “MX4 is small-group, high-intensity interval training run as a circuit,” says Dianna Kaga, owner and operator of Workout Anytime Marietta. Each class includes 10-12 students and two certified trainers. Trainers design lesson plans incorporating four to six, 4-minute exercise stations targeting strength, cardio, power and endurance. They vary lesson plans and equipment used to work every muscle and keep participants engaged. “MX4 classes are fast paced, but are designed to get you into awesome shape in just three to four, 30-40 minute sessions a week,” says Dianna. “The class setting itself is meant to pull people out of their comfort zones and push them a little harder than they would on their own. It’s a great fitness option for any age; men or women; because exercises are clean on the joints and scalable — trainers can modify any movement to better suit individual needs. — more on page 54

54 For those starting a fitness journey, Dianna recommends taking full advantage of gym staff and the programs they offer. Workout Anytime Marietta offers two complimentary MX4 sessions with the purchase of a gym membership, or the ability to try one complimentary session prior to purchasing a membership. They also offer a “complimentary success session” where new clients meet with personal trainers to create tailored fitness plans. The experience is designed to make clients feel as comfortable as possible with starting something new. Dianna encourages clients to embrace the change! “Sometimes our MX4 clients are uncomfortable with their new heart rate, but we have certified professionals overseeing each class to ensure individuals are training at a rate that’s best for them,” she says. Longtime member Kathie Monti shares, “MX4 has been life changing for me. I am a middle school administrator with crazy working hours. I can attend MX4 early in the morning or late afternoon. The class only lasts 30 minutes, so I can get in and out quickly.” What she likes best about the class, adds Kathie, is the people. “People of all fitness levels participate and we have truly become a team,” she says. “During an MX4 class you will see a lot of high-fives and fist bumps. You will hear lots of encouraging words. The coaches will push you to your limit. We laugh and say, we can do anything for 30 minutes.” n

KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH

O

n Jan. 18, I drove to the Marietta home of my friend and fellow Marietta Arts Council member Bonnie Reavis (who you might also know from her myriad of fabulous businesses on the Marietta Square, including The Brickyard Marietta, Zenith Design Group and gallery43.2), and we hit the road to west midtown. A new theater company had invited me and a guest to get a sneak peek at the pieces they were working on for an upcoming show at Kennesaw State University’s new dance theater. The company, called Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre after Atlanta’s first name, is made up of dancers who are very familiar to those who follow Atlanta’s ballet scene and bring an ultra-modern approach to their art. The five founding members — Heath Gill, Tara Lee, John Welker, Rachel Van Buskirk and Christian Clark — have a combined 85 years of experience in professional dance. All five were stars with the Atlanta Ballet and announced last April (with the exception of Welker, who had retired the previous December after dancing with the Atlanta Ballet for 21 years) that they would be leaving the company. The split came as a shock to many, and was said to be a result of then-new artistic director Gennadi Nedvigin’s desire to make the company completely classical. The previous artistic director, John McFall, embraced modern as well as classical ballet and thus the dancers felt they had an artistic freedom under McFall’s direction that no longer existed in the Atlanta Ballet. As we stepped into the company’s west midtown practice space (which we arrived to after walking through a warehouse filled with giant pink dog statues, but that’s another story), we were welcomed by the dancers and staff and joined 20 other supporters to sit on a bench along the wall of the practice space. The next hour was filled with marvel, interest and discussion. The choreographer and creator for the upcoming performance, Danielle Agami, took the onlookers through bits and pieces of the performances they were developing for the show and welcomed comments and questions throughout the evening. The company may or may not decide to continue to perform at the KSU Dance Theatre, but I hope that they do. Having an innovative, talented, mind-provoking company such as theirs in our own backyard — even if it is just for March — is a treasure. “NEXT DOOR,” a world premiere production, will take place on Friday, March 30 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 31 at 2 and 8 p.m. Run time for the show is approximately an hour. Tickets are on sale now and are $20 for students and $30 for general admission. For more information, visit terminus-serenbe.com. The KSU Dance Theatre is located on the college’s Marietta campus, at 1100 South Marietta Parkway in Marietta. n

Inspired by playwright Tarell McCraney’s interest in Yoruban mythology and his own childhood growing up in housing projects in Miami, The Brother/Sister Plays is a trilogy of works that have earned McCraney a reputation as one of the most exciting playwrights in a new generation. First up in the Emil Theatre is Tarell’s first installment of The Brother/Sister Plays, “In The Red and Brown Water.” Fast, spirited Oya is a promising young athlete who is offered a scholarship that could jump-start her future. Forced to choose between her dying mother and her own dreams, she makes a life-changing decision. Oya’s subsequent path to womanhood leads her to a crossroads where she finds herself torn between settling down … and just settling. This play is recommended for ages 13 and older. When: March 8-25. Comedian Eddie B brings an uncensored, raw and hysterically realistic portrayal of a teacher’s hectic life with “Teachers Only Comedy Tour” to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. Eddie B is comedy on steroids! The Houston native is single handedly changing the comedy game, tapping into the minds of teachers around the world and selling out major arenas throughout the country in minutes. The “Teachers Only Comedy Tour” has established Eddie as the official voice of teachers across the globe.
